Ravens smoke signals; are they interested in Shawne Merriman?

November 03, 2010 |

Perhaps, the most concerning tidbit to the prospective acquisition of a guy like Shawne Merriman is his capabilities, even if he’s healthy. Regardless of any mitigating impactors, the primary consideration is “what does this player offer?”

The most revealing signal to discern is why did the San Diego Chargers simply cut this guy?

If he was capable of helping their defense and supporting the team’s stretch drive, a reasonable mind must assume Smith would’ve kept him within reach. Teams consistently tolerate shenanigans for prospective stellar production.

Unless, of course, you’re a complete cancer ….

Shawne Merriman has publicly displayed his desire to play for the Ravens. Yet, a proposed return to his roots, here in Maryland, is not as simple as a mutual attraction by Ozzie Newsome and company.

Like Randy Moss, the controversial Merriman must pass thru waivers today. Will either player be claimed? Will both be claimed? We’ll find out ….

But, the question still exists ….

Is Shawne Merriman capable of even helping the Ravens? Can he make this defense better? Will his health, condition and overall abilities permit it?

Ozzie Newsome and John Harbaugh likely know. However, a SMOKE SIGNAL is all you’re getting from them.
