There was an excellent pair of pieces in today’s USA Today (links provided below) by Michael McCarthy and Jarrett Bell. McCarthy’s piece did a wonderful job putting a face on the repercussions of a lockout with regards to the small businesses and workers that exist around the league in each NFL City.
The union has put its face to their issues, should they get to litigation, with Payton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees being attached to law suits should the NFLPA decide to decertify.
When you look at the faces of the restaurant and bar owners, vendor and support people at the stadium it is no contest. The money the NFL is bantering about is huge, but by percentage, it is nothing compared to what is at stake for these business owners and independent contractors. Where is their seat at the table while the league and union decide to negotiate, litigate or legislate their differences?
Jarrett Bell’s piece did an excellent job of outlining all the layers of difficulty that decertification and the ensuing lawsuits will bring.
I hope the Principals at the league and the union read USA Today and looked at these two pieces side-by-side in the negotiation room to remind themselves of the consequences should they fail at doing their jobs and to come up with a settlement.
