4. Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura out, Sean Considine and Christian Thompson in
Yes, I know losing two backup safeties may not seem like much on the surface, but what if Ed Reed holds out/retires? Who do we turn to then? This appears to be my biggest fear going into the season. Considine has been a journeyman throughout his career and is a solid fill-in guy, but doesn’t have the ability Tom Zbikowski possesses. Christian Thompson was selected in the fourth round to add some depth to solid secondary and play special teams, but will he be ready? The main reason why I see this guys leaving as a big loss is their contributions on Special Teams. Nakamura and Zbikowski were always down the field first and always in on the ball carrier, whether it was the opening kickoff or a punt return. Will someone step up and fill the hole? We’ll see during training camp.
Other than a few new faces and departures, there are a few questions this team will have to answer in order to make it to the promised land.
Questions Heading into the 2012 Campaign:
1. Will Sergio Kindle have a role?
The man has been in our organization for two years and in the words of Jim Mora, he hasn’t done “Diddly Poo.” It’s his third year. The health and physical issues should be addressed by now. He should also have a grasp of the playbook even though he’s been watching the game from afar. Even when not in the game, players should always take mental reps to improve their own stock on the team. Will he emerge as a contributor to this team, or will he fade into the background like Dan Cody did a few years ago? Time will tell.
