The biggest win of the weekend happened on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles were coming off a devastating loss on Saturday. It was a game that they handed to the Yankees. New York scored three runs on Saturday on a bloop, a walk and an error. Quite a devastating way to lose when your starter pitches as well as Wei-Yin Chen did against the Yankees. It was the first game of September and not the way the Orioles wanted to start the month. It got worse on Sunday when Chris Tillman gave up a two-run home run to Chris Dickerson then left the game with elbow soreness. No big deal for this year’s edition of the Birds. Just bring in the newly acquired Randy Wolfe to mow down the Yankees and let Mark Reynolds handle the rest.
Reynolds got the Orioles back in the game with his fifth inning solo home run, and then hit the blast heard round the Bronx when he launched a three-run shot to left to give the Orioles a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Nick Markakis added some insurance in the eighth and the Orioles closed the American League East deficit to just two games. To me, that win proved that the Orioles belonged and that they were ready to battle the Yankees for the Division. It should be a heck of a four game series here in Baltimore starting on Thursday night.
Side note: Sorry I can’t do a blog without talking about football when we are just two days away from the start of the regular season. I am in three fantasy leagues this year and I won’t bore you with all my picks, but my first round selections were:
LeSean McCoy with the fourth pick in the media fantasy league: Drew Forrester I am gunning for you
Drew Brees with the fifth pick in my fan league
Calvin Johnson with the seventh pick in my people that used to be in the media and some that still are league
Only one note from all the leagues I picked in. My man crush on Justin Tucker has been well documented and I was planning on taking him in all my leagues.
That was until Tom Peace took him in the 12th round of my people that used to be in the media and some that still are league. I don’t care how much of a man crush you have on a kicker you just don’t take him in the 12th round.
