14. John Harkes —
Once tabbed “Captain for Life” by then coach Steve Sampson, Harkes was an industrious, hard working midfielder who played significant roles in both 1990 and 1994 World Cup teams before Sampson controversially cut him weeks before the ’98 event in France. Played in 90 career international games for the U.S. and notched six goals. Lacked the speed of true “world class” midfielders but made up for it with good decision making and the ability to change the play with one-touch passing and strong deep balls to the wings. Had a successful run with Sheffield Wednesday of the English Premier League and once scored that circuit’s “Goal of The Year”.
