BALTIMORE- The defending America East Conference men’s soccer champion UMBC Retrievers will play 11 of 18 regular season games on the plush turf of Retriever Soccer Park, as the 2013 fall schedule was announced.
“Teams want to play here, at a nice facility with great crowds,” head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. said. “The atmosphere for the games here has been spectacular and I think the word is getting out that Retriever Soccer Park is a great place to play.”
In 22 seasons under Caringi, UMBC is 75-19-22 (.743) in 115 games on the Bermuda turf of Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers open the campaign by co- hosting a pair of tournaments in the “classic” format. UMBC will host the first with Delaware as both teams will welcome Seattle University and UNLV to the east coast. UMBC hosts the Redhawks of Seattle on Friday, Aug. 30 to open the season and entertains the Runnin’ Rebels on Sun., Sat. 1.
The following weekend, UMBC and Navy will face off against a pair of Northeast Conference opponents in the Hampton Inn BWI Classic. The Retrievers host the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State on Thurs., Sept. 5 and CCSU will be followed in by St. Francis (N.Y.) as the Terriers visit on Sat., Sept. 7.
Both Navy and Delaware will face UMBC at Retriever Soccer Park. The Mids come in on Tuesday, Sept. 17, while the Blue Hens renew a rivalry with the Retrievers on Tuesday, Oct. 1. UMBC also has non-conference home dates with George Mason (Sept. 25) and George Washington (Sept. 28) in a four-day span. The Retrievers have three non-league away dates, as they take on Radford (Sept. 14), Loyola (Md.) (Sept. 21) and William & Mary (Oct. 9) in preparation for the hostile environments of America East Conference opponents.
“It will be a fun schedule in the sense that we are playing some teams this year that we haven’t played in some time,” head coach Pete Caringi said. “To start off the season with two west coast teams is something very unique in today’s college setting. That should be an exciting tournament to open the season with and we still have our local and regional games that are very good. It sets up for us to have great competition so by the time we get to the America East Conference games, we should know where we are as far as our team is concerned.”
The Retrievers open defense of their America East crown on Sat., Oct. 5 when they visit Hartford. UMBC’s first league home game will be part of Homecoming ’13 festivities as Albany visits Retriever Soccer Park on Sat., Oct. 12. The Dawgs play three of the next four on the road, including the first-ever meeting with new league member U.Mass-Lowell on Sat., Nov. 9. UMBC wraps up the regular season on Wed., Nov. 6 when they host 2011 America East champion Stony Brook.
Nine of 11 UMBC home games will kick-off at 7:00 p.m. Only the dates vs. UNLV (1:00 p.m.) and Albany (2:30 p.m.) are afternoon contests. The six-team America East Tournament will begin on Sat., Nov. 9 with two quarterfinal games at the sites of the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds. The semifinals take place on Wed., Nov. 13 at the Nos. 1 and 2-seeded squads -and the championship game is slated for Sat. or Sun., Nov. 16 or 17 at the home field of the highest-seeded remaining team
