Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 28 May 2012 by WNST Staff

Honorable Mention: Boxing-Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode (Saturday 9pm from Carson, CA live on Showtime), Gabriel Rosado vs. Joel Julio (Friday 9pm from Bethlehem, PA live on NBC Sports Network); WNBA: Minnesota Lynx @ Washington Mystics (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet); Pro Lacrosse: MLL Chesapeake Bayhawks @ Denver Outlaws (Saturday 9pm from Denver live on ESPN3.com)

10. Zac Brown Band (Thursday 5:30pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Capital Jazz Fest feat. Indie.Arie, Bill Cosby (Friday-Sunday Merriweather Post Pavilion); Radiohead (Sunday 7:30pm Verizon Center); Miranda Lambert/Jerrod Niemann (Sunday 4pm Jiffy Lube Live);  City and Colour (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live); Smile Empty Soul (Saturday 5pm Recher Theatre); Crossfade (Monday 7pm Baltimore Soundstage); Dandy Warhols (Tuesday 7pm 9:30 Club); The Used (Wednesday 7:30pm Fillmore Silver Spring); Victor Wooten (Thursday 8pm Howard Theatre); Dr. John (Friday 7:30pm Birchmere); Rhett Miller (Monday 8pm Jammin Java)

I’d watch ZBB do just about anything, but this was as good as anything I’ve seen them do…

My favorite tune from Thom Yorke and the boys?

For more traditional country folk, I sorta dig this Jerrod Niemann tune…

I wish I didn’t have to admit to digging this tune…

9. Great Grapes Wine & Food Festival (Saturday & Sunday 12pm Oregon Ridge); Guy Torry (Thursday-Saturday Baltimore Comedy Factory); Corey Holcomb (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv); “Man on a Ledge” available on Blu-Ray/DVD (Tuesday); Glenn Clark’s first ever “Hogfest” (Saturday)

That’s right. For the first time in my (still?) young life, I will be roasting a pig Saturday. It’s all thanks in part to ABC Rental Store in Rosedale. A talented young man I listen to on the radio is always talking to me about them. I think his show is called “The Reality Check.” I PRAY my results make me as happy as George W. Bush…

Also, I will be hosting a qualifier for the Olympic KanJam team Saturday (more on Twitter @OlympicKanJam). I expect the day to look much like this…

GRAMMY AWARD WINNER MAROON 5 AND WIZ KHALIFA TO HEADLINE INFIELD CONCERT ON PREAKNESS DAY

Infield Ticket Prices Reduced For Entire Weekend

BALTIMORE, 02-03-12—The Maryland Jockey Club today announced 2012 Preakness InfieldFest will include performances by Grammy Award nominees Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa. Both artists will play extended sets on the main stage in the public Infield on Saturday, May 19 at Pimlico Race Course when the Maryland Jockey Club, North America’s oldest sporting organization, hosts the 137th renewal of the Preakness® Stakes.

Maroon 5 won a GRAMMY for Best New Artist in 2005 and is currently nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group for “Moves Like Jagger”, which also features Christina Aguilera. Lead vocalist Adam Levine and Aguilera are coaches on the popular NBC talent show program “The Voice”. Maroon 5, who were named Favorite Band at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards in January, has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.

Wiz Khalifa is nominated for two GRAMMY Awards: Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Black & Yellow”, his single that peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold 3 million digital copies since release. Khalifa’s recent single “Young, Wild & Free”, which also stars Snoop Dogg, recently reached Platinum status.

“The InfieldFest brand, now in its fourth year, is all about first class music for the region’s most celebrated party at an historic and iconic sporting classic. The multi-celebration festival experience promises a variety of music and entertainment, including the return of the hugely popular MUG Club,” said Maryland Jockey Club president Tom Chuckas. “There is plenty for fans to do all day long. The Preakness Infield has become a rite of passage for generations in the mid-Atlantic region. Nowhere else can you listen to great music and soak up the party atmosphere that is InfieldFest at such low prices, capped off by the constant action of live racing that is Preakness Day.”

GRAMMY winners Bruno Mars (2011), Train (2011) and Zac Brown (2010) have performed on the main stage at InfieldFest in previous years as well as Rock and Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top (2009), Buckcherry (2009) and O.A.R. (2010). Renowned independent promotion and production company, I.M.P., of the legendary 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion, has booked and produced the InfieldFest main stage since its inception in 2009.

In addition to the main stage headliners, Preakness InfieldFest will feature live music from top acts on a second stage, presented by Jägermeister, a variety of activities and a slew of Maryland-branded food and beverage concessions. The Jägermeister stage acts will be announced at a later date.

Two 160 feet MUG Club areas will be available and easily accessible for the second consecutive year. For an additional $20 to a regular admission to the public Infield, fans receive a souvenir mug for unlimited refills of beer. As in all prior years, the Maryland Jockey will continue to work closely with its beverage partners to ensure that responsible drinking policies and protocol is in place for all Preakness fans.

Infield Tickets will be reduced to $40, with a MUG Club package $60 until 7:30 a.m. Monday, February 6 before prices are returned to $50 (Infield Ticket) and $70 (MUG Club).

Seating information and ticket reservations are available at www.preakness.com. Tickets can be bought by calling the Preakness sales office at 410-542-9400 or 877-206-8042 or at www.ticketmaster.com.

NO beverage of any kind (cans or bottles), including alcohol, soft drinks and water will be allowed to be brought into the public Infield. Coolers and backpacks, containing food, will be permitted in the Infield but coolers larger than 28″l x 15″w x 17″h will be prohibited. Beach blankets and suntan lotion, cellular phones, cameras (up to 35mm), camcorders, binoculars and lightweight plastic lawn chairs are also allowed in the Infield.

Additional information can be found on www.facebook.com/InfieldFest and https://twitter.com/PreaknessStakes.

The annual running of the Preakness is an American institution. First contested in 1873, it is one of thoroughbred horse racing’s most valued Grade 1 stakes races. Now one of the largest single-day sporting events in the United States, “The People’s Race…The People’s Party” has hosted up to 121,263 for the pivotal middle jewel of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown at famed Pimlico.

The greatest three-year old horses in the history of racing have thundered down the stretch at “Old Hilltop” in their quest for the Woodlawn Vase, the most valuable trophy in American Sports, including Man o’ War, Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Rachel Alexandra.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 13 December 2011 by WNST Staff

Honorable Mention: High School Basketball-Bel Air @ Perry Hall (Wednesday 6:30pm), St. Frances @ John Carroll (Wednesday 7pm); Mixed Martial Arts: Strikeforce-Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal (Saturday 10pm from San Diego live on Showtime)

10. Lyle Lovett and His Acoustic Group (Thursday 7pm Rams Head Live); Bret Michaels (Wednesday 7pm & 10pm Rams Head on Stage); Pietasters (Friday 8pm 9:30 Club), Virginia Coalition (Saturday 8pm 9:30 Club); Devo (Thursday 8pm State Theatre), Phil Vassar (Sunday 8pm State Theatre); Chris Isaak (Monday 7:30pm Birchmere); Anthony Hamilton “Back to Love” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday)

I am not a Lyle Lovett fan, but I am a human being. Because I am a human being, I am ABSOLUTELY a fan of this tune. One of the happiest days in my life may have been the day I walked off a hangover into the DC Farmers’ Market and saw a folk band playing the song. If it hadn’t been in DC it would have been the HAPPIEST…

Is there any chance I could go see Bret Michaels and skip everything besides this?

I saw the Pietasters most recently at Artscape this summer. They were fantastic. They always are.

Virginia Coalition is ABSOLUTELY the best band you’re not listening to. Unless you’re not listening to U2. There aren’t people that don’t listen to U2, are there?

9. Glenn Clark’s Christmas Party (Saturday 8pm undisclosed location in Monkton); “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” & “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol out in theaters (Friday); Christian Finnegan (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv)

This is how last year’s Christmas party ended…

That’s my girlfriend cleaning up vomit. The vomit happened to be on the ceiling. It is what it is.

Oh…and last year’s party also involved the following….

Ours were of course much manlier than this, but you get the point. This is not to be missed…like…say…ever.
