Versatile Guard Will Have Three Years of Eligibility Remaining Starting in 2014-15
TOWSON, Md. – Versatile guard A.J. Astroth, who played for Vanderbilt University last season, has transferred to Towson University and will play for the Tigers starting in 2014-15, it has been announced by head coach Pat Skerry.

A native of Tampa, Fla. and a graduate of Wharton High School, Astroth has three years of eligibility remaining.

“We’re extremely excited to add a player the caliber of A.J. to our program,” said Skerry. “He’s coming from a very good and well-coached program at Vanderbilt. His time playing in the SEC and for Coach Kevin Stallings will benefit him greatly. We expect that he’ll be a major contributor to our team at the guard position after his sit-out year.

“A.J. is a very versatile perimeter player that can fill up the stat sheet in a number of ways. I also think he’ll benefit greatly working with our player development staff. We know he’s excited and focused to make an impact for the Tigers.”

Astroth is a 6-6, 200-pound guard, who averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.4 steals while attending Wharton High School. Astroth, who graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer, was rated as a three-start recruit by ESPN and Rivals.com.

During his freshman year at Vanderbilt, Astroth played in nine games, averaging 0.4 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. He scored against Alabama A&M (12/15/12) and at Missouri (1/26/13) and grabbed a season-high four rebounds at Arkansas (1/12/13).

Astroth was a first-team All-Hillsborough County member during his junior and senior seasons at Wharton. He earned second-team All-State notice during his senior campaign. His Wharton High School team was a three-time district champion and a regional runner-up in his senior season. Astroth was named team captain twice and was a member of the high honor roll for four years. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.
