Cambridge, Mass.- UMBC senior goalkeeper Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn School) was named America East Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for games ending Feb. 24, 2012.

Cohen led the Retrievers in the squad’s 11-7 victory over Rutgers at UMBC Stadium on Feb. 23. Over the final three quarters, the Retriever netminder made 12 of his 13 saves and allowed only five goals over the same span of time.

The 13 stops were one shy of his career high of 14 made at Rutgers in 11-7 victory in 2012. He also received America East Conference Player of the Week honors after his performance in that contest a season ago.

UMBC (1-1) faces defending national champions and current No. 4 Loyola (2-1) at Ridley Athletic Complex on Tues., Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m.

The UMBC men’s basketball team will welcome Boston University to the RAC Arena for the final time with the Terriers as members of the America East Conference on Sat., Feb. 23. Tip-off time between the Retrievers and Terriers is 7:00 p.m.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (4-9, 6-20) suffered through its poorest contest of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday, when they fell, 83-39 at America East leader Stony Brook. SR G Ryan Cook (team-leading 14.7 ppg) was the lone Retriever in double figures with 15 points. UMBC led, 23-14 at the nine-minute mark of the first half, but managed only five field goals in the final 30 minutes of action.

TERRIER UPDATE:  Boston University is surging and bring a five-game winning streak into this evening’s game. The Terriers just knocked off Albany, 79-69, at home on Wednesday, hitting nearly 52 percent from the floor and committing only four turnovers vs. the Great Danes. JR G D.J. Irving leads the team with 14.4 points per game and JR F Dom Morris is contributing 11.8 ppg and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per contest.

WHO’S UP NEXT:  UMBC completes the regular season next week, facing Hartford in West Hartford, Conn. on Feb.  28 and play the finale vs. Binghamton at home on Sun., March 3 at 2:00 p.m.

UMBC has four regular season games left before the America East Conference Tournament. The Retrievers open play on the road this week, taking on first-place Stony Brook at Pritchard Gym. Tip-off time between the Retrievers and Seawolves is 7:00 p.m.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (4-8, 6-19) could not hold on to a ten-point halftime lead and fell to 0-3 in overtime this season in a 92-86 setback at UNH. SO G Joey Getz scored a career-high 22 points in the contest and is averaging 13.8 ppg in his last four outings. SR G Brian Neller, who has hit 27 treys in his last six games, added a season-high 19 points and took over third place on UMBC’s all-time list with 241 career treys. SR G Ryan Cook (14.7 ppg) leads UMBC in scoring, but is now at a season-low in scoring average.

SEAWOLF UPDATE: In a battle for the league’s top spot, Stony Brook (10-2, 19-6) overwhelmed Vermont, 65-48 before a rowdy home crowd on Feb. 22. G Marcus Rouse led the way with 16 points as SBU held UVM to seven second half field goals. Stony Brook is 9-1 at home this season. Freshman phenom, post Jameel Warney leads the squad with 12.0 ppg and 7.6 rpg and is shooting 62.4% from the field.

WHO’S UP NEXT: UMBC returns home on Sat., Feb. 23 to face a red-hot Boston University team in their last visit to RAC Arena as a member of the America East Conference. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team opens its 46^th season of intercollegiate lacrosse on Saturday, Feb. 16 when the Retrievers travel to Moon Township, Pa. to take on host Robert Morris University. TOP DOG: Head Coach Don Zimmerman enters his 20^th season at UMBC in 2013. The Retriever mentor stands eighth in victories (213) and 15th in winning percentage (60.7%) amongst active Division I coaches. The win over Binghamton on April 10, 2010 was the 200th in the career of UMBC head coach Don Zimmerman. He is now 213-138 in his 27th year as a collegiate mentor. Zimmerman is the 10th active coach to record 200 victories. He coached his 250th game at UMBC vs. Hartford on May 4, 2011.

BEASTS OF AMERICA EAST: UMBC is 36-11 in nine years of America East competition and 20-4 at UMBC Stadium. UMBC has never lost back-to-back regular season contests in league play.

In 2012, the Retrievers (3-2 AEC) posted a winning league record and earned a spot in the four-team America East Conference Championships for the ninth consecutive year.

WINNING THE TIGHT ONES: UMBC is now 26-16 in games decided by three goals or less since the beginning of the 2007 season. UMBC had won eight straight overtime decisions from 2007-09 until dropping a Feb. 20, 2010 triple overtime decision to Delaware. UMBC’s previous overtime loss was an 11-10 setback at Penn early in the 2006 season.

In 2012, UMBC was 2-4 in games decided by one or two goals. The Retrievers have won 17 of its last 23 one-goal decisions.

UMBC is now 16-6 in Don Zimmerman’s 19 seasons in overtime and in his career, Coach Zimmerman is 18-8 in extra time in 26 seasons.

HOME, SWEET HOME: UMBC is 37-16 (.698) at home since 2006.

DON’T LOOK BACK: UMBC is now in its 46th season of varsity men’s lacrosse with a record of 338-283 (.544). The Retrievers played their 600th intercollegiate match on March 18, 2012 at Maryland. They are 221-217 (.505) in their 32nd year at the Division I level, achieving win No. 200 vs. Ohio State on March 21, 2009. Before the win over Towson on April 1, 2008, the last time the program was last over the .500 mark at the Division I level was when at the end of its third season (1983) when the record was 19-18.

PLAYER NOTES

TEAM CAPTAINS: The UMBC men’s lacrosse team has selected seniors Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox), Neill Lewnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) , and Ethan Murphy(West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) as its captains for the 2012-13 academic year. Jones and Murphy will serve as team captains for the second consecutive year.

2012 AMERICA EAST ALL-CONFERENCE: Junior attackman Scott Jones and sophomore face-off specialist Phil Poe earned America East Conference First Team honors in a vote of the league’s six head coaches. Two Retrievers- senior defender Aaron Verardi and junior midfielder Scott Hopmann- earned Second Team honors, while freshman A/M Derek Bertolini was selected to the All-Rookie team. Junior defender Ethan Murphy was also honored by earning a selection to the league’s All -Academic squad.

Sixty-six Retrievers have been honored by the America East Conference on all-league teams since 2004.

SR G Adam Cohen was named America East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for games ending Feb. 26, 2012. Cohen scored UMBC’s final goal of the day with 1:39 remaining at Rutgers and it is believed to be the first goal scored by a Retriever goalkeeper in 32 years of NCAA Division I competition.

SR A Scott Jones had hat tricks or better in four of his last six outings of the 2012 season, scoring a total of 18 goals in that span. He had scored in 14 consecutive games (35g-10a-45pts, 3.21 ppg) until being held off the board at Vermont on April 7. Jones had multiple points in 12 of those contests and finished the 2012 season 8th in the nation with 2.77 goals per contest. He now also has 13 career games with three or more goals and is tied for 12^th- most amongst current Division I players.

HELPING HANDS: In 2012, SR A Joe Lustgarten led America East and finished 4th nationally with 2.23 assists per game. He became the 21st player in school history to post 25 assists in a season (29)-the last player to tally 25 or more was Drew Westervelt, who recorded 36 in 2007. Lustgarten has multiple assists in his last nine outings, which is the longest streak in a single season since Steve Marohl, the NCAA record-setter with 77 assists, had multiple helpers in 12 straight in the 1992 campaign.

CROW ABOUT POE: JR face-off specialist Phil Poe won 15 draws (15-6) vs. RMU in the 2012 opener and captured 15 more (15-4) on March 6 vs. No. 4 Maryland. The last Retriever to capture 15 face-offs in a game was Taylor Marino, who garnered 19 in America East Championship victory over Albany on May 3, 2008. Poe attempted all but six draws through 11 games in 2012 and his 320 attempted were 7^th in the nation. His 174 face-off victories are the second-most in school history, behind only Russ LeClair’s 210 wins in 1984.

Poe was named America East Conference Player of the Week for games ending April 21. Poe tied a school record by winning 22 face-offs in the 17-16 overtime victory over Albany. Moreover, his 15 ground balls recorded are the most since Nick Brownlee scooped a school-record 18 vs. VMI in 1997 The 22 face-off wins tied for the sixth-most in a Division I single game in 2012.

Poe’s 87 ground balls on the 2012 season is the most for a Retriever since Nick Brownlee had 108 in 1997. Poe won 14 or more draws in nine of the 13 contests in 2012. He finished 11th in the country with 6.31 ground balls per game.

A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT: Robert Morris (0-1) led the nation in scoring in 2012, averaging 14.3 goals per game. RMU led the nation in scoring for the third consecutive season, the first time that has occurred since the NCAA began tracking those statistics. The Colonials were selected to finish third in the Northeast Conference (NEC) in 2013, according to a poll of the league’s head coaches. Bryant was tabbed as the preseason favorite, earning the maximum possible five first-place votes, while Mount St. Mary’s slotted in second ahead of RMU.

Robert Morris posted an 11-4 record in 2012, but has lost five of its top seven goal scorers from a season ago. Senior Jake Hayes earned All-NEC First Team honors in 2012 after finishing among the top 10 nationally in both goals per game (2.80) and points per game (4.07). In the opener for both teams, Bellarmine hung on for a 9-8 victory to top Robert Morris at a sunny and chilly Joe Walton Stadium on Feb. 9. SR G Charles Ruppert produced one of the finer outings of his career as he posted 15 saves.

UMBC VS. RMU: The two schools met for the first time on the lacrosse field in the Retrievers’ 2012 opener at UMBC Stadium. UMBC fought from behind the entire game, tied visiting Robert Morris early in the fourth quarter, but never got the lead and fell to the Colonials, 10-8. Jones, Lustgarten and JR M Zach Linkous scored two goals each for UMBC.

UMBC starts a two-game America East road swing on Wed., Feb. 9 when they visit New Hampshire at Lundholm Gymnasium. Tip-off time between the Retrievers and Wildcats is 7:00 p.m. 

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (4-7, 6-18) could not recover from another poor start and fell to Vermont, 67-55, at the RAC Arena on Sat., Feb. 9. In the three-game homestand, UMBC trailed by 9, 15 and 9 points at the midpoint of the fi rst half. They rallied to defeat Maine, 68-67, in the opener, but lost to Albany and Vermont. SR G Brian Neller has hit 22 treys in his last five games, while SO G Joey Getz scored in double figures in two of the three games at the RAC Arena. SR G Ryan Cook (14.7 ppg) leads UMBC in scoring, but is now at a season-low in scoring average.

WILDCAT UPDATE: New Hampshire (2-8, 6-16) had the bye this weekend, after falling, 63-48 at Vermont on Feb. 6. The Wildcats are 0-5 at home in league play in 2013. SR F Ferg Myrick, who leads the Wildcats with 13.8 ppg, scored just two points at Vermont a week ago. Myrick leads UNH with 34 three-point field goals.

WHO’S UP NEXT: UMBC has the weekend off before traveling to Long Island to take on Stony Brook at Pritchard Gym on Tues., Feb. 19.

UMBC plays two of the top three teams in America East this week, as they welcome Albany and then Vermont to the RAC Arena. RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (4-5, 6-16) is riding its first two-game winning streak since 2010-11 with back-to-back nail-biting victories over Binghamton and Maine last week. SR G Brian Neller was named America East Player of the Week after scoring a season-high 18 points vs. the Bearcats and hitting the game-winning trey with 0.5 seconds remaining vs. the Black Bears. JR F Chase Plummer leads UMBC with 13.2 ppg in league play, while SR G Ryan Cook is the overall leader at 15.2 points per outing.

GREAT DANE UPDATE:  Albany (6-4, 17-7) just completed a four-game homestand and snapped a three-game slide with a 79-46 thrashing of Binghamton on Feb. 2. SR wing Jayson Guerrier led a resurgent UA attack with 18 points. Albany had averaged just 46.0 points per game in setbacks to Vermont and Stony Brook. SR G Mike Black leads Albany with 15.2 points per game. Albany is 8-2 on the road in 2012-13.

Cambridge, Mass.- UMBC senior guard Brian Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Acad.) has been named America East Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games ending Feb. 3, 2013.

Neller netted a heavily-contested 25-footer with 0.5 seconds to play to propel the Retrievers to a thrilling 68-67 victory over Maine at the RAC Arena on Sat., Feb. 2.

He shook off a difficult first half and hit 3-of-6 from behind the arc in the second half to finish with 12 points. On Wednesday, Neller scored a season-high 18 points, hitting 6-of-13 from behind the arc in the Retrievers’ 61-58 victory at Binghamton on Wed., Jan. 30.

Neller, who moved into fifth place on UMBC’s all-time 3-point field goal list (now 228) with six at Binghamton on Wednesday, has 25 treys in his last six outings. He needs four more treys to move past Skip Saunders (1990-94) and into fourth place.

He leads America East in treys per game (now 3.6) in league play and is fifth in 3-point percentage at 39.5.

UMBC makes its final trip to Boston, Mass. to take on the Terriers in an America East Conference contest on Sat., Jan. 26. Tip-off time at the Case Gymnasium is set for 1:00 p.m. with Paul Mittermeier on the call.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (2-4 AE, 4-15) rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit, but could not complete the comeback and fell, 67-60, to Stony Brook at the RAC Arena on Jan. 23. The setback was UMBC’s first at home in conference play (2-1) this season.  Four Retrievers scored in double figures, but UMBC could not overcome a 1-of-14 start to the game from the floor. SR G Ryan Cook (15.7) has scored in double figures in 17 of 19 games this season. JR G Quentin Jones has started the last four games and has 18 assists/9 turnovers in AEC action. 

TERRIER UPDATE:  The Terriers (4-3, 10-10 ) earned their fifth win in six games, an improbable 85-80 overtime win at Albany on Jan. 23. Boston U. trailed by six with 10 seconds left but a pair of threes by JR G D.J. Irving, the second off a steal with 2.5 seconds left, forced overtime. Boston U. then made all six of their shots in the extra session and poured in 22 points in five minutes for the win. FR G Maurice Watson had 21 points and seven assists for the winners. Irving leads a balanced attack with 14.6 ppg while Watston (10.7 ppg) leads the conference with 4.8 apg.

WHO’S UP NEXT:  The Retrievers complete the first half of the conference schedule with a game at Binghamton on Wed., Jan. 30.

The Retrievers hit 9-of-17 shots from behind thec, while the Hawks misfired on their first 18 attempts of the evening. SR G Brian Neller tied a season-high with 15 points and is 14-of-31 from behind the arc in his last four outings. SR G Ryan Cook is in the top ten in America East in scoring (15.8), rebounding (6.4), field goal and free throw percentage and minutes played.

SEAWOLF UPDATE:  Stony Brook (4-1, 13-5) allowed Vermont to shoot 50 percent from the floor and surrendered its most points of the season in suffering its first league loss (81-73) Friday. FR F Jameel Warney, a seven-time America East Rookie-of-the Week honoree, recorded his third career double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds).  Winners of five its last six, Stony Brook has its best 18-game record at the Division I level. SR F Tommy Brenton is just 18 rebounds shy of becoming the league’s 8th player to 1,000 rebounds.

WHO’S UP NEXT:  The Retrievers travel to Boston U. on Friday to meet the Terriers on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

JR F Chase Plummer led the visitors with 17 points.  SR G Ryan Cook (team-high 15.8 ppg) was held to four points and had his double-figures streak snapped at a career-high 11 straight. SR G Brian Neller is 9-of-21 from behind the arc in his last three outings.

HAWK UPDATE:  Hartford opened league play at 3-0 before falling, 73-59 at Stony Brook on Saturday. The Hawks fell behind, 37-18, at the half. FR G Evan Cooper led Hartford with 18 points vs. the Seawolves. SO F Mark Nwakamma leads the Hawks in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.2 rpg). Hartford has hit 141 3-point field goals on the season and only allowed 82.
