Blog & Tackle: Want baseball drama? Find it at the CWS

Posted on 14 June 2009 by Chris Pika

If you miss baseball games that mean something this time of year (and what Orioles fan doesn’t?), check out the College World Series.

College baseball is not as big in the Northeast as it is in other parts of the country, but a lot of talent that you see in the big leagues comes from the power schools, such as Texas, LSU, Cal State-Fullerton, North Carolina, Arkansas, Arizona State — all of which are in Omaha. First-timers Virginia and Southern Miss round out the field. A total of 40 players in the CWS were selected in the receent MLB Draft.

The emotion shown by the players and the atmosphere in front of 24,000-plus each game in Rosenblatt Stadium is something to see. I worked the Atlanta regional that Southern Miss advanced to the Super Regional, where they beat Florida to go to Omaha, and the Golden Eagles are as scrappy as any team in the CWS. By the way, the Orioles’ own Matt Wieters was a pretty fair college player at Georgia Tech in 2008, and we know his story over the last year.

The college game, despite what some think of the aluminum bats, is played at a very high level and well worth your time in front of the tube over the next 10 days.
