Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 03 March 2009 by Glenn Clark

Maryland 84, Wake 78

I don’t usually pick the Terps to beat better teams; but after talking to a lot of people who are indifferent to the team; something tells me they will win this one. They’re going to struggle with Wake’s size; but if it comes down to a battle of “Greivis vs. Teague”, I think Vasquez carries the Terps at home. I also just don’t see the Terps dropping back to back games at Comcast Center in the same season

Let’s see what everyone else has to say……

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Congratulations to SunTrust Athlete of the Morning Jay Greene. With no local high school games yesterday due to the snow; we decided to have a “College Athlete of the Winter” contest this morning. Drew was in charge of tabulating the voting for the contest; and we KNOW he would never fix the voting in this sort of thing. According to Drew; Greivis Vasquez was 2nd in voting, Reggie Holmes 3rd, Kristi Toliver 4th, and Carlee Cassidy 5th.

Some more score picks…
-UMBC 12, Johns Hopkins 10. I think this is a REAL opportunity for UMBC to show that they are the premiere team in Baltimore. The Retrievers have been outstanding early; and despite the Jays’ struggles, I’m not counting them out. This should be a good one on a chilly night in Catonsville.
-Loyola 10, Siena 6. I like the Greyhounds MUCH more with Shane Koppens back.
-Navy 11, Mount St. Mary’s 4. The Mids will bounce back nicely from a loss to Bucknell; with the Mountaineers not serving as much competition.

Talk to you tomorrow.

-Binghamton 79, UMBC 66. This is apparently the biggest game in Binghamton history. They won’t drop it.
-Loyola 65, Rider 60. I think the Greyhounds will get this one at home.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 25 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

Duke 94, Maryland 86

Can lightning strike the same place twice? I don’t think so. If Duke is shooting, there’s nothing Maryland (or anyone else) can do to beat them. Same goes for Carolina, but Carolina wasn’t shooting the other day. I DON’T think Maryland will be blown out again at home; but I don’t think that Duke will be as cold from outside as Carolina was.

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Congratulations to SunTrust Athlete of the Morning Donyae Jackson. He scored 16 points last night to lift Calvert Hall to a 63-38 win over Spalding in the first round of the Catholic League playoffs. Jackson had also been Defensive Player of the Year this year.

-I get the feeling that ONE of the Ravens’ free agents will sign before Thursday’s deadline. Most likely Bart Scott. They have SO much work to do; I don’t think they’re comfortable going to Friday with all 3 hitting the market. I think they’ll get Bart locked up to breathe a bit easier.

-Delaware 77, Towson 64. I just don’t get the feeling the Tigers are even capable of winning games anymore.

Talk to you tonight with a Maryland-Duke live blog from Comcast Center.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

If the Ravens want to pursue Marvin Harrison; that’s fine with me…..

…….IF (and only if) they are pursuing him as a complementary option to the number 1 receiver they are also looking to obtain.

Marvin Harrison is NOT the answer at wide receiver. But he could be part of the solution for one season if nothing else. Harrison can still play, but he will be 37 years old when the 2009 season begins. He cannot be counted on as a number 1 receiver; and the Ravens need to find a more long-term option at the position.

But if the Ravens are interested in signing Marvin Harrison and drafting Darrius Heyward-Bey (or a similar receiver); that COULD answer the wide receiver solution.

There are a lot of “ifs” involved there.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Simanski (Roland Park) scored 6 goals this weekend as the Bearcats beat Robert Morris; and was named Big East player of the week yesterday. Congratulations to both!

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 20 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

North Carolina 96, Maryland 78I get a bad feeling this one will look a lot like their first matchup. If Ellington and Lawson are shooting; this game will be over quickly, even at Comcast Center.

Morgan State 71, Towson 67

I was tempted to pick the Tigers at home; but I don’t think a team can win a big game like this after giving up just a few days earlier. The William and Mary loss told me a lot about this team.

Rider 68, UMBC 58

I would’ve liked the Retrievers at the RAC; but not on the road. Just not deep enough.

Drexel 77, Loyola 70

I’m not sure I’d pick the Greyhounds to beat much of anyone at this point.

Coppin State 64, Hampton 58

The Eagles are getting contributions from a number of players, and setting up well to be the number 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:-Congratulations to SunTrust Athlete of the Morning Cassie Cooke; who scored 21 points for Winters Mill last night in an overtime win over Westminster. With the 21, Cooke has now surpassed 1,000 points for her career.

Some more weekend picks….
-Maryland 13, Georgetown 9. The Terps’ attack is strong; and the only REAL questions I have about them are: A-How will the young guns hold up in big, pressure-packed games? And B-Can rotating Phipps and Carter in the cage REALLY work? I don’t think either question will be an issue tomorrow.
-Johns Hopkins 9, Siena 6. The Blue Jays will have issues rebuilding this season; but they won’t come at Homewood Field tonight.
-Loyola 8, Towson 6. I think the Greyhounds really benefitted from playing a week earlier than the Tigers. I think they miss Shane Koppens; but again, they’ll be okay.
-UMBC 12, Rutgers 5. This could be uglier. The Retrievers looked REALLY good in their win over Delaware; and the Scarlet Knights aren’t as good as the Blue Hens.
-North Carolina 10, Navy 9 (OT). Would you expect anything besides a classic from these two teams?

Talk to you tomorrow with a Maryland-Carolina live blog.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 19 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

There are a couple sides to the Brian Roberts situation.

One-The Orioles basically had no option but to extend Brian’s contract. He had little to no trade value; and might not have had much more at the deadline with teams knowing that he was about to become a free agent. The Orioles basically realized he was more valuable WITH them than without them; and had no choice but to make the move.

Two-This move does NOT signify that Brian Roberts buys into Andy MacPhail’s plan; nor does he buy into the idea that the Orioles are going to become a contender. Roberts DOES buy into familiarity; and he DOES buy into the fact that in a year, he will be even less likely to get a 4 year, $40 million deal on the open market. He might also hope that things are moving in the right direction for the organization; but he’s certainly not counting on winning a World Series ring in the next 5 years.

Three-The Orioles MIGHT regret signing Brian to such an extension; but they don’t really have other options. Their minor league system has some pitching prospects and decent power hitters; but they don’t have a middle infielder with speed and defensive range on the horizon. They also don’t have the right chips to trade for such a prospect. This buys them 5 more years to try to solve that problem.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Congratulations to SunTrust Athlete of the Morning Ryan Burghauser. Burghauser was a “machine” inside for the North Harford Hawks in their 56-44 win over Patterson Mill last night.

-That was a BAD loss for Towson last night. Towson’s decision to move to the CAA from the America East was a CLEAR step up in terms of talent; and the Tigers just haven’t proved to be ready to play at that level. Towson MIGHT compete with Morgan on Saturday; because Morgan’s conference is at a lower level. But if the Tigers want to succeed in the CAA, they HAVE to invest more.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 18 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

The Ravens absolutely COULD not allow Terrell Suggs to hit the open market.

Unlike Ray Lewis; who MIGHT find out that the market for an aging LB isn’t quite as deep as he would like it to be; teams would line up for DAYS for the chance to sign Suggs. If he hit the market; he’d be gone.

The Ravens should still work to sign Suggs to an extension; as they have clearly made him the cornerstone of their defense. They can’t play this game with Suggs year after year; they have to get this locked up. But part of that responsibility also falls on Gary Wichard and Suggs himself to stay true to his word in being willing to take a “hometown discount.”

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Congratulations to SunTrust Athlete of the Morning Damon Lee. Damon scored 26 for Calvert Hall last night in their 73-52 win over Towson Catholic in the MIAA “A” Conference semifinals.

-Everything that the World Baseball Classic SHOULD be is taken away by the timing of the event. If Jeremy Guthrie were throwing in late October; I’d feel much better if I were Andy MacPhail or Dave Trembley. I know Davey Johnson will be limiting Guthrie’s innings/pitches; but just like with Sherrill in last year’s All-Star Game; I don’t know that I’m comfortable with a pitcher being used by anyone other than the organization this close to Opening Day.

-Towson 66, William & Mary 62. I have no real REASON to think Towson will win tonight; but hopefully being at home will help.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 17 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

Chris McAlister will be sorely missed.

I know about C-Mac’s off field issues; and I have no idea if I would really like the guy personally (although he has never been anything but nice to be in the times we’ve chatted in person and on the phone).

But this is about Chris McAlister the football player.

Chris McAlister the football player has been one of the 3 best Cornerbacks of this decade. Chris McAlister the football player completely changed the way opposing offenses would scheme against the Ravens. Chris McAlister the football player was quite possibly MORE important than the team’s LB’s, D-Lineman, etc.

I mean that.

I’ve talked to Chris’s teammates, coaches, and opposition. I can absolutely tell you that Chris was as polarizing in the locker room as you think he was. But I can also tell you that when offenses looked at how they would go up against the Baltimore Ravens, their gameplan was more about the Cornerback than it was ANY linebacker. Teams changed what they did based around Chris McAlister.

Can the Ravens win without C-Mac? Sure. But they BETTER go out and find a CB. Drew keeps saying “they’ll find someone”; but it isn’t that easy. Nnamdi Asomugha might be available; but he will cost you. Sean Smith, Vontae Davis, C.J. Moore, etc. are also options in the Draft; but there are no guarantees there.

I understand why the Ravens made the move wholeheartedly. $8 million is a high price tag. But if a Ravens corner gets beat over the top in consecutive games next season; that $8 million might not seem so pricey.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 16 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

Pitchers and catchers reported.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say.

Seriously; am I supposed to be excited about Spring Training? I almost wish it didn’t happen. Why drag out baseball season any longer? Thank God I can enjoy College Basketball and Lacrosse until May at least; then I have to at least recognize that baseball season is going on.

But if one more person says “Pitchers and catchers reported” as if it is something exciting; I’m not going to be able to control my laughter.

-Congratulations to SunTrust Athlete of the Morning Albert Woody (McDonough); who ended Andrew Bannister (Bishop McNamara)’s hopes of winning a 4th straight independent school state title with a win Saturday at the 130 pound level. Mt. St. Joe won the team title.

-Loyola 72, Canisius 65. The Hounds will bounce back from an UGLY loss to Iona Friday night.
-Morgan State 84, Bethune-Cookman 73. The Bears are getting contributions from guys like Marquise Kately and Kevin Thompson as well as star Reggie Holmes; and are playing at the EXACT level they want to be at going into the MEAC Tournament.
-Florida A&M 66, Coppin State 59. I think the Eagles might struggle tonight after fighting for a tough win over Bethune-Cookman Saturday.

-I agree with Drew regarding Navy’s decision about Eric Kettani. Unless every Academy (and the Justice Department) decides to come up with a new policy; individual academies should now allow athletes to play sports professionally. There may be a gray area here; but it needs to be identified.

Talk to you tomorrow.
