Live From Owings Mills: Ravens Training Camp Dates & Passing Camp Notebook

Posted on 08 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

3:00-The Ravens have cut OLB William VanDeSteeg. This means they will have no one on their roster with lower case letters on the back of their jersey. I’m sorry if you already read me use that on Twitter (@WNST).

1:30-Here are some notes from practice today:

-A number of veterans were not present today for various reasons. Amongst those that were undisclosed were: LB Ray Lewis, DE Trevor Pryce, S Ed Reed, FB Le’Ron McClain, OT Oniel Cousins, C Matt Birk, LB Jarret Johnson and RB Willis McGahee

-OT Jared Gaither was also not present today. He was here yesterday and practiced according to John Harbaugh-who also said Gaither claimed his foot was better. Harbaugh believed today’s absence was not injury-related.

-CB Lardarius Webb (knee) and CB Fabian Washington (knee) again worked on the side today during practice. DT Haloti Ngata (chest) and DT Brandon McKinney (back) participated in individual drills, as did OT Ramon Harewood (knee). RB Matt Lawrence (knee) was dressed, but did not participate. Ngata said he believes he will be 100 percent for Training Camp.

-Harbaugh said the team has spent their final week of OTA’s working on regular season opponents. They worked on the New York Jets yesterday and the Cincinnati Bengals today. They will work on the Cleveland Browns tomorrow and the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday.

-John Harbaugh addressed the team’s loss of next week’s OTA’s in detail; explaining that during the team’s first week of OTA’s, 6 players were held too long in meetings and 2 players spent too much time on the field. Harbaugh said NFLPA Player Reps Todd Heap and Chris Carr approached him regarding the situation, and the team worked with the players and the league to resolve the issue. When asked about how much missing next week would hurt, he said “I don’t think it will hurt us at all…it’s a little bit embarrassing.”

-WNST.net’s Luke Jones was here with me at 1 Winning Drive today, he will have a full story-including player reaction-about the whistle blowing and OTA forfeit.

-Members of the Baltimore Mariners staff and Maryland Terrapins Offensive Coordinator James Franklin were on the field during practice today.

-Ravens TE Dennis Pitta will join Drew Forrester tomorrow morning on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST at 6:30am.

-You can hear from John Harbaugh, Derrick Mason, Shayne Graham, Domonique Foxworth, Haloti Ngata, Todd Heap and Chris Carr NOW in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault at WNST.net.

11:15-Greetings from 1 Winning Drive, where the Ravens are back at work for Passing Camp today. Before I head out to practice, I wanted to pass along the Training Camp schedule that the team released this morning. The important dates to remember for fans are:

July 27-First practice for rookies
July 30-First full team practice
Aug 2-Suite holders & Sponsors Day (not open to general public)
Aug 11-Practice not open for general public (Walk-through)
Aug 19-Final date practice is open to public
Aug 20-Camp breaks-closed to general public (Walk-through)

I’ll be back shortly with more after practice; in the meantime here’s the release:

For Immediate Release

The Baltimore Ravens kick off their 15th training camp at McDaniel College with two practices (8:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.) on Tuesday, July 27, and break camp on Friday, Aug. 20. Ravens rookies, quarterbacks and select players will report to the Best Western Hotel (451 WMC Drive) on Monday, July 26, and then take part in four practices over two days – all open to fans and media – before all veterans arrive Wednesday, July 28.

On Thursday, July 29, the Ravens will hold an administrative day that is closed to the media and public. The first full-squad practices open to the public and media are scheduled for Friday, July 30, at 8:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

The Ravens have scheduled 41 practices over their 26-day camp. Sessions are open to the media and public except on July 29 (administrative day), Aug. 11 (pre-game walk-through) and Aug. 20 (pre-game walk-through/camp breaks). Plus, on Monday, Aug. 2, the Ravens will hold their annual Suite Holders and Sponsors Day during the morning session. This practice is closed to the general public, but remains open to media members. (Note: There will not be any practices on Friday, Aug. 13, following the team’s first preseason game against Carolina.)

Baltimore opens the preseason by hosting the Panthers on Aug. 12 for a nationally-televised (ESPN) broadcast at M&T Bank Stadium. The Ravens then play at Washington on Aug. 21 and return home to face the New York Giants on Aug. 28. Baltimore rounds out the preseason at St. Louis on Sept. 2.

The Ravens’ final three preseason games will be televised by WBAL-TV and simulcast on MASN. The ESPN broadcast against Carolina will also air locally on WJZ-TV.

“We’re excited to get back to McDaniel [College] and do the things we need to do to be ready for the start of the season,” head coach John Harbaugh said. “It’s a great atmosphere there with the fans up close. That adds a dimension to what we plan to achieve at camp. Training camp is the next step for our team after what we consider a very good offseason where our players worked hard. It’s all about getting better and being the best team we can be.”

The Ravens open the 2010 regular season at the New York Jets’ new Meadowlands Stadium on Monday night, Sept. 13, with the game nationally televised by ESPN. The Ravens’ difficult slate has the team opening with back-to-back road games against 2009 playoff teams. The Jets earned a spot in last year’s AFC Championship game, while Baltimore’s second opponent, the Bengals (Sept. 19), won the AFC North after sweeping the division with a 6-0 mark.

Along with the Carolina preseason game and opener at the Jets, the Ravens will play three other primetime games. Baltimore will be at Atlanta on Thursday night, Nov. 11, in a game televised by the NFL Network. The Ravens will host the Steelers on Sunday night, Dec. 5 (NBC), and then play the following Monday (Dec. 13) at the Houston Texans (ESPN).

After finishing with a 9-7 record in 2009, the Ravens produced their sixth playoff team of the decade (2000-09), third best (tied with Pittsburgh) in the AFC behind Indianapolis (nine) and New England (seven). Baltimore opened the ’09 campaign with three straight victories and won three of the last four entering the playoffs. Behind an offense that ranked ninth in NFL scoring (24.4 ppg) and a defense that finished third in total yards and points allowed (300.5 ypg/16.3 ppg), the Ravens upended the Patriots (33-14) in the Wild Card round, becoming the first road team to win a playoff game at New England since 1978. Baltimore then fell at Indy in the Divisional game (20-3). Harbaugh and QB Joe Flacco, who set the NFL record for most wins ever (13, including playoffs) by a rookie head coach starting a rookie QB in 2008, now own the league mark for earning the playoffs in their first two seasons by such a pair.

The Ravens, who have made the playoffs three of the last four seasons, have never earned the postseason three consecutive years.

Baltimore returns five Pro Bowlers from last season: LB Ray Lewis (11 Pro Bowls), S Ed Reed (six), FB Le’Ron McClain (two), DT Haloti Ngata (one) and RB Ray Rice (one). G Ben Grubbs, who earned a first-alternate Pro Bowl distinction, also returns, as does Flacco, who in 2009 became just the fourth starting quarterback since the 1970 merger to reach the playoffs in his first two seasons.

Complementing this core of standouts are C Matt BirkNT Kelly GreggTE Todd HeapOLB Jarret JohnsonS Dawan Landry, WR Derrick MasonT Michael Oher and LB Terrell Suggs. The Ravens also added Pro Bowl WR Anquan Boldin via trade this offseason and bolstered the defense’s depth with the second-round selections of OLB Sergio Kindle and DT Terrence Cody in the NFL Draft.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 01 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Auto Racing-NASCAR Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 (Sunday 1pm from Pocono Raceway live on TNT), IndyCar Series Firestone 550k (Saturday 8pm from Fort Worth, TX live on VERSUS); MLL: Boston Cannons @ Chesapeake Bayhawks (Friday 7:30pm Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium); WNBA: Atlanta Dream @ Washington Mystics (Saturday 7pm Verizon Center); Boxing: Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Cotto (Saturday 10:15pm from New York live on HBO)

10. Hall & Oates (Sunday 6pm Pier Six Pavilion); Taylor Swift (Tuesday & Wednesday 7pm Verizon Center); WMZQfest Throwdown feat. Montgomery Gentry & Little Big Town (Sunday 2:15pm Jiffy Lube Live); Pscyhadelic Furs & She Wants Revenge (Tuesday 7pm Rams Head Live), Passion Pit (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live); Lil’ Kim (Saturday 9pm Sonar); Broken Bells (Monday 7:30pm 9:30 Club); Aisha Tyler (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv); Denis Leary (Wednesday 8pm Warner Theatre); Toby Keith (Saturday 7:30pm Aberdeen Proving Ground); Jeff Beck (Monday 7:30pm Wolf Trap); Jack Johnson “To The Sea” available in stores (Tuesday); U2-360 live from the Rose Bowl available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

I’d like to say there’s a lot of really good music on this list. Of course, I can’t actually say that-because I’m really bad at lying.

I feel like I should be more into Hall & Oates than I am…

I’m not the biggest fan of country music, but I AM a fan of Little Big Town…

I have a friend who graduated from the University of Oklahoma. When she gets uppity about how good the Sooners are at football, I bring her back to earth by reminding her that Toby Keith played football for the Sooners, and he’s a clown. Although, he DID do this song…

9. AIFA-Erie Storm @ Baltimore Mariners (Saturday 7pm 1st Mariner Arena); AFL-Jacksonville Sharks @ Chicago Rush (Friday 8pm from Chicago live on NFL Network)

I assume that folks in Erie, PA are Steelers fans, so I feel like they’re probably terrible people that I wouldn’t like. That being said, The Wonders are from Erie…

…and Tom Hanks > every other person on the planet. So I’m kinda torn…

8. Golf: PGA Tour-The Memorial presented by Morgan Stanley (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Dublin, Ohio), Champions Tour Principal Charity Classic (Friday & Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from West Des Moines, Iowa live on Golf Channel)

With Phil Mickelson on his heels, Tiger Woods returns this week. I’m getting to the point where I ALMOST feel bad for him. This guy’s life went from totally awesome to completely terrible. Of course, if it hadn’t-the only thing we’d be able to talk about is golf, and that’s freaking terrible.

You know, I could sit here and BS about a sport that I literally pay less attention to than I do to this season of Glee; or I could just post this video of Joslyn James talking about Tiger’s anatomy. Seriously, it’s golf. What am I supposed to do here? And I know you’ll be surprised by this, but this video is probably NSFW. Unless you work at a place where people talk about sex organs openly. You know, like the Hallmark store.

7. “Get Him To The Greek” opens in theaters (Friday), John Waters “Role Models” book signing (Saturday 7pm Atomic Books)

1-Forgetting Sarah Marshall was HILARIOUS. That doesn’t mean Get Him To The Greek will definitely be hilarious, but it at least gives it a shot…

2-Russell Brand is married to or going to marry Katy Perry. I should look that up, but it sounds remarkably boring. However, Katy Perry isn’t unattractive. That makes Russell Brand movies better.

3-The John Waters book signing gives me an excuse to post his freaking great interview with David Letterman from 1986. Or as I like to call it, “the greatest moment of all time EVER.”

6. Soccer: Team USA vs. Australia (Saturday 8:30am from Rustenberg, South Africa live on ESPN2); U.S. Open Cup: Real Salt Lake @ DC United (Wednesday 7:30pm RFK Stadium), MLS: Real Salt Lake @ DC United (Saturday 7:30pm from RFK Stadium live on Comcast SportsNet & MLS Direct Kick)

Chances of Glenn Clark being awake at 8:30 on Saturday to watch our boys kick some Kiwi ass? Slim. Unless of course you’re an establishment that makes beer mugs out of bacon…

5. Belmont Stakes (Saturday 5pm from Belmont Park, NY live on ABC)

Since I won’t be making the final leg of the Triple Crown, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would just be willing to come over and make me a handful of these…

And by “someone come over”, I really mean “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” needs to have Google searched “Belmont Breeze ingredients” before I finish this blog.

4. NHL Playoffs-Stanley Cup Finals: Flyers/Blackhawks (Game 3 Wednesday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 4 Friday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 5 if necessary Sunday 8pm from Chicago live on NBC)

I will be forced to admit that I haven’t watched even a second of the Stanley Cup Finals thus far. I watched lacrosse Saturday night, and WWE Raw Monday night. Apparently Game 1 got good ratings though, so Mazel Tov.

That being said, if the Blackhawks win the Cup-this is how I will celebrate…

3. NBA Playoffs-NBA Finals: Lakers/Celtics (Game 1 Thursday 9pm from Los Angeles live on ABC, Game 2 Sunday 8pm from Los Angeles live on ABC)

I’m rooting for LA in this one by default, mostly because I hate everything that has to do with Boston. In fact, I think Everlast (from House of Pain-you’ll remember he wore a Celtics jersey in the “Jump Around” video) should be arrested for what he did to Johnny Cash…

This is really difficult too, especially knowing that Maria Menounos roots for the C’s. She seems nice…

2. Tennis: French Open (Tuesday-Thursday 8am live on Tennis Channel, 12pm live on ESPN2; Friday 11am live on NBC; Saturday & Sunday 9am live on NBC. All action from Paris.)

So, Robby Ginepri’s loss to Novak Djokovic left no American men at Roland Garros. Again. My little cousins are better at playing in clay than American men are. I’ll revert back to rooting for Robin Soderling and whoever else is playing against Roger Federer. It’s pretty much how I’ve handled my love of tennis since Andre Agassi retired. And I can always root for Jelena Janokvic in the meantime???

Nope. Too weird.

1. Ravens Rookie Camp (Wednesday & Thursday, 1 Winning Drive), Ravens Rookie Show (Wednesday 7pm Casey’s in Towson-airing Thursday on AM1570 WNST), Ravens Roost Convention (Thursday-Sunday; Parade Saturday-Ocean City)

Don’t you dare be the guy that says “Is there gonna be enough food at Casey’s to feed Terrence Cody???” I expect better from you. And I’ve already giggled about it in my mind about a hundred times before now.

You know what the best thing is about the Ravens event in Ocean City this weekend? Intern Genna works in Ocean City…

Intern Genna > Santa Claus.

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 26 April 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention-Volleyball: AVP Santa Barbara Open (Sunday 5:30pm from Santa Barbara, CA live on ESPN2); High School Lacrosse: Archbishop Spalding @ Calvert Hall (Friday 4pm); Mixed Martial Arts: Bellator Fighting Championships XVI (Thursday 8pm from Kansas City live on Fox Sports Net)

10. Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall & Larry The Cable Guy (Saturday 8pm 1st Mariner Arena), My Morning Jacket (Saturday 6:30pm Merriweather Post Pavilion), Ozomatli (Tuesday 7pm Rams Head Live), Angels & Airwaves (Monday 7pm Rams Head Live), Saliva (Thursday 7pm Recher Theatre), Clipse (Sunday 8pm Sonar), Citizen Cope (Friday & Saturday 8pm 9:30 Club), University of Maryland Art Attack: Weezer & Ben Folds (Friday 6:30pm Byrd Stadium), Echo & The Bunnymen (Friday 9pm Black Cat), Little Feat (Sunday & Monday 8pm Rams Head On Stage), Towson Town Spring Festival (Saturday 11am, Sunday 1pm Downtown Towson)

I was never a big “Here’s Your Sign” fan. But I saw Bill Engvall with Frank Caliendo at the Patriot Center last year, and I’ll admit it. The dude is FUNNY…

It’s a bit random that I’ll be in Louisville Saturday while a band from Louisville is in Maryland, but go see My Morning Jacket. You won’t be disappointed…

Ozomatli isn’t particularly well known, and it probably has something to do with the fact that they use a different language. Sometimes. Enjoy!

And while they’re from Virginia and probably root for the Redskins, I dig me some Clipse anyway…

9. Auto Racing: NASCAR Crown Royal Presents the Heath Calhoun 400 (Saturday 7:30pm from Richmond International Raceway live on FOX); Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 (Saturday 1:30pm from Kansas City, Kansas live on ABC)

While I’m not a NASCAR fan, there’s something I dig about the fact that for one race a year, they allow a random nobody to have his name attached to the name of a race. I suggested they name a race after the guy Jack Beecher from the “Beecher Meat Company” that calls into “The Morning Reaction” all the time, but I guess they passed on that.

Myself, if I was in the world of naming rights…everything would be named after Camila and Mariana Davalos…

8. AIFA: Harrisburg Stampede @ Baltimore Mariners (Sunday 4pm 1st Mariner Arena); Arena Football League: Iowa Barnstormers @ Orlando Predators (Friday 8pm from Orlando live on NFL Network)

And apparently at halftime of the Mariners game, some WNST personalities are going to participate in a wiffle ball Home Run Derby. Sadly, I can’t make it-as I will be returning from Kentucky. In my place I’ve decided to send a new WNST employee. I think he’ll bring a lot to us not only as a station, but more importantly-I placed a $50 bet on him winning this thing…

7. NBA Playoffs: Miami Heat-Boston Celtics (Game 5 Tuesday 7pm from Boston live on NBA TV); Chicago Bulls-Cleveland Cavaliers (Game 5 Tuesday 8pm from Cleveland live on TNT); San Antonio Spurs-Dallas Mavericks (Game 5 Tuesday 9:30pm from Dallas live on NBA TV); Oklahoma City Thunder-Los Angeles Lakers (Game 5 Tuesday 10:30pm from Los Angeles live on TNT); Milwaukee Bucks-Atlanta Hawks (Game 5 Wednesday 8pm from Atlanta live on TNT); Utah Jazz-Denver Nuggets (Game 5 Wednesday 10:30pm from Denver live on TNT); Portland Trailblazers-Phoenix Suns (Game 6 Thursday from Portland TBD)

Well, I guess this LeBron James fella is sorta allright….

Dude, I can totally hit that shot. Well, I COULD hit that shot. Years ago. When I was playing against my father. In the driveway. And he gave me like 15 tries. And let me take a step closer every time I missed.

It still counts, jerks.

6. Golf: PGA Quail Hollow Championship (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Charlotte.), Champions Tour Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic (Friday & Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from Biloxi, MS live on Golf Channel)

So…Tiger Woods is playing all the meaningful tournaments this year, right? The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, the PGA Championship….AND THE QUAIL HOLLOW CHAMPIONSHIP???

If Tiger Woods doesn’t win, my second choice is Ichabod Crane.

5. Soccer-UEFA Champions League Semi-finals: Bayern Munich @ Lyon (Tuesday 2:45pm from Lyon, France live on Comcast SportsNet locally, Fox Sports Net nationally), Inter Milan @ Barcelona (Wednesday 2:45 from Barcelona live on Fox Soccer Channel); U.S. Open Cup: FC Dallas @ DC United (Wednesday 7:30pm RFK Stadium), MLS: New York Red Bulls @ DC United (Saturday 4pm from RFK Stadium live on Comcast SportsNet); 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Game available for XBox 360/PS3 (Tuesday)

Do you have ANY IDEA how much studying I failed to do in college do to FIFA video games???

I just hope there’s a way this could happen in real life…

4. NHL Playoffs: Montreal Canadiens @ Washington Capitals Game 7 (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

There is NOTHING better than a Game 7 in the NHL Playoffs. It’s such a big deal that even I’M excited.

So……let me hear you HOWL!!!!!

Oh…we weren’t talking about Game 7 between the Phoenix Coyotes and Detroit Red Wings Tuesday night in Glendale???

Damn. Well, you should be excited about that too!

3. Boxing: Shane Mosley vs. Floyd Mayweather (Saturday 9pm from Las Vegas live on HBO PPV)

It’s not that I’m NOT excited about Mayweather-Mosley, it’s just that I was significantly MORE excited about Mayweather-Big Show…

I had so much money on the Big Show in that one…

2. College Lacrosse: Towson @ Johns Hopkins (Wednesday 7pm from Homewood Field live on ESPNU), Loyola @ Denver (Sunday 3pm from Denver live on AM1570 WNST), Fairfield @ Maryland (Saturday 1pm Byrd Stadium), Hartford @ UMBC (Saturday 12pm from UMBC Stadium live on WMAR2 & ESPNU), Denison @ Stevenson (Saturday 1pm Caves Athletic Complex), Patriot League Tournament: Navy vs. Lafayette (Friday 5:45pm from West Point live on CBS College Sports. Championship Game Sunday 3pm from West Point live on CBS College Sports)

You realize that if Towson beats Hopkins Wednesday night, it will be the first time in 39 years that the Blue Jays will miss the NCAA Tournament?

The NCAA Tournament without Johns Hopkins? It would be like “Parks & Recreation” without Jerry! He makes the show!!!

1. Horse Racing: Kentucky Derby (Saturday 5pm from Louisville live on NBC-Derby event Saturday 12:45pm at Pimlico), Kentucky Oaks (Friday 4pm from Louisville live on Bravo)

I’m going to Louisville. I can’t wait. Mostly for this reason…

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 12 April 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday!

It’s a Happy Monday for me because Tina Fey hosted Saturday Night Live. And when they weren’t bust trying to shove Justin Beiber or Kristen Wiig down my throat (Wiig is TERRIBLE by the way), the show was actually very funny. Especially this…

…if she runs for President, they have to bring her back as a permanent cast member, right???

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Blue Jays got to Kevin Millwood late to finish off weekend sweep

So…how was YOUR weekend?

To call a weekend sweep at the hands of Cito Gaston and the Jays “frustrating” wouldn’t do justice. To call it “unthinkable” would be much more appropriate.

I don’t know how else to say this. When you don’t REALLY try to put together a winning team, you’re not going to get a winning team. They don’t just come together by accident. When you decide that instead of going out and getting a REAL third baseman to replace Melvin Mora-you’ll just go get a stop gap to fill time until Josh Bell is ready, you get a converted SS who gobbles one up every now and then.

Should Miguel Tejada have made that play in the 8th inning? Probably. But it was a very hard hit ball and left him in a tough spot. It is forgiveable if it happens in the 2nd inning-but in that spot, it turned the entire game.

Not that Chone Figgins would make the Orioles winners (or even that he would have been a good signing for this team), but would he have been able to make that play there? Probably. Would other third basemen have been able to make that play there? Probably.

But when you just sign SOMEONE and assume they can play the position, or hit at a certain spot in the lineup, or fill a certain role in the bullpen or rotation-this is what you get.

“Woefully incomplete.”

Just knowing that Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Brian Matusz are pretty good is good enough for some people. I want a team that is WINNING, or is trying damn hard to do just that.

2. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of loss

Alex Gonzalez hit 2 home runs yesterday.

Alex FREAKING Gonzalez hit 2 home runs yesterday.

On in other words, as many as this guy hit in his CAREER…

(Edit from GMC: You’re thinking to yourself, “that’s a strange Guillermo Quiroz reference”…and it is! But I literally thought to myself “what former O’s might only have 2 career home runs?”, and my 1st guess was Guillermo Quiroz. Unbelievably, I was right. Do I get some sort of medal for that?)

3. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Birds continuing to lose ‘game of inches’

You know what else is a game of inches?

hungry hippos

It means a lot to a lot of people that the Orioles have been fairly close in some of these games. As if “near misses” might somehow count as half of a win, or a third of a win. It’s as if by losing 4 or 5 close games early in the season, they actually get credit for an extra win or 2.

I mean seriously, what kind of lame; 2nd rate sport would give a team credit for LOSING, just because it was a close game and maybe tied late?

Oh. Right.

4. Fanhouse’s Andrew Johnson says Brian Roberts likely headed to DL, Justin Turner to come up from Norfolk

What’s that quote again? The rich just keep getting richer?

Julio Lugo was asked for his thoughts on the Roberts injury, and he was rumored to have said “this is the best news that has ever happened.”

(Edit from GMC: He may or may not have actually said that. But you KNOW he was thinking it.)

Look, NO ONE is crying for ol’ B-Rob; considering THIS is what he’ll be doing for the next 15 days…

You thought I was going to post a picture of his wife in some form of undress. I love to keep you on your toes.

5. The Sun’s Kevin Cowherd says Dave Trembley shouldn’t be blamed for Orioles’ problems

But he’s going to be. If 1-5 balloons to 9-23 through this brutal stretch to start the season, you better believe that Andy MacPhail will have to think about walking into Dave Trembley’s office and saying “sorry skip, we just have to do something to shake things up.”

Look, I don’t REALLY think Dave Trembley is much of a manager. I think he was the guy that would work for a cheap and be a good soldier while the team sold this “2011 plan” to fans. I don’t know how ANY player in the clubhouse can really take him seriously, considering the ORGANIZATION doesn’t take him seriously enough to commit to him and extend him moving forward.

If he tried lighting a fire under one of these guys asses, there’s no reason for that player to not start chuckling. “Really, skip? I’m Adam Jones. I’ll blow gum if I want to. Haven’t you seen my t-shirt?”

Before I move on from the Orioles, a reminder that they’re back in action tonight (mostly because they have to) at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. First pitch against the Rays is at 7:05pm, and the game can be seen on MASN2. Jeremy Guthrie faces Matt Garza, meaning we’ll get to see more of that strange growth on Garza’s chin…

And congratulations to Damon Yaffe from The Fan for winning today’s “Apologist of the Morning” award. Damon said Sunday that despite the 1-5 start, he “can’t divert (his) attention from some of the positives.” Noble. Those positives you ask?

-“Camden Yards is still a gem”

Okay, sure…

-“Orioles fans are still passionate and hungry”

-“Matt Wieters”

Now we’re talking…

-“The Young Arms”

Would like to see some more…

-“MASN really taking flight”

And NOW is where I spit out my Vitamin Water.

“MASN really taking flight?” We’re talking about a network that spends a better part of their day simulcasting ANOTHER network that I already have on my Comcast or Xfinity or whatever the hell it’s called these days.

“MASN really taking flight?” This is a network that is so dreadful, a simulcast of Scott Garceau’s radio show is considered the best programming they have to offer!

As I was saying to Drew Forrester this morning on AM1570 WNST, I was watching the “East Carolina Basketball Show” and then a lacrosse game between Denver and Quinnipiac over the weekend on MASN and thinking to myself, “you know, this network is really starting to take flight.”

6. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says California (Pennsylvania) CB Terrence Johnson visited 1 Winning Drive

The Ravens have also looked into Indiana (Pennsylvania) CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah; so if you’re a Cornerback playing at Kentucky (Pennsylvania), Kansas (Pennsylvania) or Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania), be ready for a call from Ozzie Newsome. Corners from California, Indiana, Kentucky or Kansas need not apply.

Being serious, Johnson is a 5’9″ CB who most NFL Draft analysts don’t believe will hear his name called. Just because the Ravens have hosted a player, it doesn’t mean they’re going to take him. And on the flip side, just because the Ravens haven’t shown too much interest in a player, it doesn’t mean they won’t pick him (Lardarius Webb says hello).

The biggest thing Terrence Johnson has going for him is that he was teammates with former Maryland QB Josh Portis at California PA. If anything about Portis rubbed off on him, he’ll be REALLY GOOD in every game that doesn’t count.

7. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Steelers helped Ravens by trading Santonio Holmes to Jets

The “Santoniowastradedfor _____” hastag thread on Twitter last night (follow us @WNST) was HILARIOUS. Before I saw the thread had started, I wondered why the Ravens hadn’t offered Frank Walker for Holmes.

(Edit from GMC: I KNOW Walker isn’t under contract. This is shtick. Please work with me people.)

After seeing that the thread HAD started, my suggestion was…”#santoniowastradedfor Mike Gonzalez.”

It would have been worth about as much to Pittsburgh as a 5th round pick, right?

I’m not sure why the Rooneys just decided to give up on Holmes-who is a HELL of a talent. I know he’s a bit of an ass-clown, but, um…..have they seen their quarterback or their kicker???

8. Waterbury Republican American’s Kevin Litten says those who knew Jordan Williams in Connecticut didn’t all expect his success in College Park

In a (semi) related story, I heard there were new pictures of Heidi Montag in a bikini linked in over at Busted Coverage, and I thought “you know, she’s probably not that good looking…”

Sometimes, we’re all wrong about certain things.

To be serious, this is a great read. It includes stories about racist threats Williams’ family received during his high school career in Torrington, and how the community has sort of rallied around him now that he’s had success with the Terrapins. Definitely worth the read.

9. Inside Lacrosse has Terps 4th, Loyola 9th, Hopkins 16th in Nike/IL Top 20 poll

Here’s a look at my “OldLineLax7 Poll”, since I feel as though everything I do is more important than everything everyone else does.

3-Johns Hopkins
6-Mt. St. Mary’s (I get it. They’re 6-3 and 2-0 in the MAAC. But do I REALLY think they’re better than Towson or Navy???)

This all builds up to Loyola-Geogetown, Army-Navy and Maryland-Hopkins Saturday. I’ll be wandering around Charm City with Patrick Stevens (@D1scourse) watching the games. This is fun to us, people.

10. The Sun says Baltimore Mariners improved to 5-0 with win over New Jersey Revolution

It’s not that I’m NOT interested in this. It’s just that I’d be MORE interested if it involved “J-Woww” from “Jersey Shore.”

And finally, I leave you with this…

“The Greatest Song of All Time This Week” for this week? Probably not a popular choice, but “Bumpin’ Fresh” by Virginia Coalition. It’s a WIN.

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 30 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s a Happy Tuesday for me because Shawn Michaels retired last night…and I won’t confirm nor deny whether I was a bit overly emotional…

…I’m sorry, I need a minute here.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Steelers event at North Harford High School ‘not okay’

Here’s a list of other things that are “not okay”…

4-Violent Crime

OF COURSE bringing the Pittsburgh Steelers to Harford County ISN’T OKAY! Anyone who thinks otherwise is INSANE!

(Edit from GMC: Attention Pittsburgh Steelers fans-your opinion doesn’t matter to me. We all KNOW you think it’s okay. It’s like the guy who roots for the Steelers and writes for that “b” paper that tried having an opinion on the Colts move out of Baltimore-it doesn’t MATTER what you think about it.)

As I said this morning, maybe next year the folks up at North Harford High School should consider renaming Pylesville Road to “Jeffrey Maier Boulevard” next spring.

2. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Guthrie roughed up as Orioles fell to Yankees

As I said last night on Twitter (follow us @WNST), do you think there’s any chance the Orioles could trade Jeremy Guthrie to the Diamondbacks in exchange for one of these FORMER Birds?

rodrigo krisbenson

‘Cause I’d take either Rodrigo Lopez OR Kris Benson from the D-Backs at this point!

Jeremy Guthrie has been….ummm….NOT GOOD. I don’t think he has a pedigree to think that he will just necessarily bounce bank and be a top of the rotation type of pitcher who we can count on.

But I’ll be hoping…

3. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Uehara expects to start season on DL

And that’s just too bad.

Since I don’t really have too much more to add here, I think I’m going to through up a few more pictures of Anna Benson. You can thank me later.

If only the O’s would have been any good when she was here…

4. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says Guthrie, Matusz, Bergesen, Hernandez expected to be announced as rotation behind Millwood by Trembley today

Before I move on from the Orioles; Hall of Fame 3B Mike Schmidt joined Drew Forrester this morning on “The Comcast Morning Show.” If you missed it, make sure you head over to the Audio Vault at WNST.net to check it out. He told Drew Miguel Tejada would have “no problem” moving to third base.

Drew also chatted with Harford County Executive David Craig (who told us that Harford County was “Ravens Country”), Aegis columnist Randy McRoberts, Former Maryland Jockey Club President Joe DeFrancis, Former Ole Miss DE and Ravens Draft target Greg Hardy. Head over to the Audio Vault to check it out.

5. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Syracuse WR Mike Williams, Arizona LB Vuna Tuihalamaka visited Owings Mills Monday

Voo-nah Too-ee-ha-la-mah-kah?

This makes Obafemi Ayanbadejo look like an elementary school name!

For the record, Tuihalamaka is 6’2″, 220 and had a HELL of a Pro Day in Tucson. Does that mean he’ll be a great player at the NFL level? Of course not. Does it mean that all of us in the radio business will be in trouble if he gets picked? It certainly does.

6. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Gaither officially reported to offseason program Monday

And we’re glad to have him back. Either he’ll help the team try to win a Super Bowl as the Left Tackle, or he’ll help the team try to win a Super Bowl by being dealt for a high pick in the NFL Draft.

The point is, the guy is going to help the Ravens try to win a Super Bowl. That’s all I can ask for.

7. NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora says Redskins could be interested in making deal for Jared Gaither

And if they’re willing to part with their (very high) 2nd round pick; I would certainly assume that the Ravens would be willing to make that deal. It would give them the 37th pick in the Draft, which is a coveted position.

I’m not convinced myself that the Ravens are hotly pursuing this. I think they’d make the deal, but I don’t think they’re banging down the Skins’ door to try to make it happen.

Me personally, I’m trying to make a deal for Noureen Dewulf, the girlfriend of Sabres goalie and US Olympic hero Ryan Miller…

8. Washington Post says Greivis Vasquez named to AP All-American 2nd team

Which is a tremendous honor, and certainly is worth celebrating.

That being said-while EVERYONE agrees that John Wall, Evan Turner and Wes Johnson belonged on the 1st team; are DeMarcus Cousins and Scottie Reynolds REALLY 1st team All-Americans???

I’d say the “Vivacious Venezuelan” should have been about one team higher.

9. Inside Lacrosse says Maryland 4th, Loyola 12th, Johns Hopkins 16th in new Top 20 poll

Seeing as how I don’t think the Blue Jays have much of a chance to beat North Carolina this weekend, there’s a real chance that Dave Pietramala’s squad will be completely outside of the Top 20 next week.

Should we just go ahead and wave the white flag to New York and New Jersey at this point?

10. Baltimore Blast Official Site says Blast eliminated from MISL playoffs by Monterrey La Raza in OT

Which means it is now officially OFFICIALLY baseball season in Baltimore…I guess.

Nestor went to 1st Mariner Arena three straight nights (Shogun Fights, Baltimore Mariners, Blast) and decided to document it…

The term “glutton for punishment” comes to mind.

And finally, I leave you with this.

It has bothered me for a long time that there isn’t an indoor lacrosse team here in Baltimore. I know the arena stinks, but there was a team in PHOENIX when I lived out there! This market can ABSOLUTELY get 5,000 people out to games!

I’m bothered MORE that there isn’t an indoor lacrosse team in Baltimore when I see what happened at the recent Boston Blazers/Philadelphia Wings game…

Why can’t we have that?!?!?!?

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 22 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable MentionTennis: Sony Ericsson Open (Monday 7pm from Miami live on Tennis Channel); Golf: Tavistock Cup (Tuesday 12pm from Windermere, FL live on Golf Channel), PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 2:30pm live on NBC); Bowling: PBA GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship (Finals Sunday 2pm from West Babylon, NY live on ESPN); Womens’ College Basketball-WNIT: Maryland vs. Providence/ODU (Thursday 7pm Comcast Center), Women’s NCAA Tournament (Tuesday, Saturday & Sunday-coverage live on ESPN & ESPN2); MISL Playoffs: Baltimore Blast @ Monterrey La Raza Game 1 (Friday 7:35pm from Monterrey, MX streamed live on B2liveTV.com), Game 2 (Monday 7:35pm from 1st Mariner Arena streamed live on B2liveTV.com); AIFA: Richmond Raiders @ Baltimore Mariners (Sunday 4pm 1st Mariner Arena)

10. Alicia Keys (Wednesday 7:30pm 1st Mariner Arena, Thursday 7:30pm Verizon Center), Bon Jovi/Dashboard Confessional (Monday 7:30pm Verizon Center), Ben Folds (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live, Friday 8pm 9:30 Club), Mr. Greengenes (Friday 10pm Rams Head Live), Julian Casablancas (Sunday 8pm Rams Head Live), All Mighty Senators (Friday 7pm Recher Theatre), Him (Saturday 7pm Sonar Baltimore), Dan Band (Saturday 8pm 9:30 Club)

So….your boy will be headed down to the Arena Wednesday night to see Alicia Keys. No truth (yet) to the rumor that there is already a restraining order in place. BUT….she’s DELIGHTFUL.

Going to see Bon Jovi is a good idea….if this is 1992. Is this 1992? If it was, Bon Jovi would still REALLY be good….

Between Alicia Keys and Ben Folds coming to town this week, I’m starting to think maybe I should have never given up on piano lessons. I thought it would make me a nerd. Apparently I wasn’t familiar with EVERY.OTHER.SINGLE.THING.ABOUT.MYSELF.

And if you’re a fan of The Hangover, Wedding Crashers, or naughty language in general (and really, who ISN’T a fan of naughty language in general. I’m looking at you, father); maybe the Dan Band is for you. However, the Dan Band is very much NSFW. But what is anymore, really?

9. NBA: Bobcats @ Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Wizards @ Pacers (Wednesday 7pm from Indianapolis live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Wizards @ Bobcats (Friday 7pm from Charlotte live on Comcast SportsNet), Jazz @ Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

I looked at the ‘Zards roster the other day. I’m reasonably certain I could have named more current Harlem Globetrotters than ‘Zards. Apparently Shaun Livingston AND his ACL play for them now, and he knows how to dunk the basketball….

You know who else knows how to dunk the basketball? James White….

Frankly, I’m surprised the Wizards haven’t just signed him and decided to go AND1 style at this point. I mean, what the hell else are they doing???

8.  NHL: Penguins @ Capitals (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet & NHL Network), Capitals @ Hurricanes (Thursday 7pm from Raleigh live on Comcast SportsNet), Flames @ Capitals (Sunday 3pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

I truly didn’t think there could ever…..EVER….be anything about the Caps that I’d like….but G-III is apparently out to prove me wrong…..

Also, I’m not sure if you noticed this over the weekend, but the NCAA Hockey Tournament had their own “Selection Sunday”, and are you aware of who is opening the Tournament against Michigan???

Let’s go Beavers!!!

7. Maryland Spring Football Opens (Tuesday-1pm news conference from Gossett Team House streamed live at UMTerps.com)

You know which Terps player I’m most looking forward to following during Spring ball?

Josh Portis.

(Edit from GMC: In all seriousness, Ralph Friedgen should REALLY consider naming an award for Spring performance after the former Florida transfer. I’m STILL convinced he’s going to break out at some point.)

Meanwhile, the biggest college football-related story of the spring has something to do with Lane Kiffin beating Natalie Gulbis in Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive” voting. It doesn’t matter who wins that matchup really; as there is NO CHANCE the Cricket team from Panama doesn’t win the whole thing…..

6. NFL Annual Spring Meetings (Tuesday & Wednesday from Orlando coverage at WNST.net & live on NFL Network)

Apparently the overtime rules are the hottest topic this year in the land of Walt Disney. Well, whose brackets are most busted are probably the HOTTEST topic, but the overtime thing is the hottest football-related topic. Oh, and the whole CBA thing. But who really cares about that, right?

And while we’re on the topic of Orlando, let’s just go ahead and get this out of the way. This is the final kiss from the Disney World episode of Boy Meets World. Every girl my age thought this scene was about the kiss…but every dude my age knew DAMN WELL that this scene was about Topanga’s dress.

Every sex-related lesson I received as a youngster was a direct result of something Topanga wore.

5. College Lacrosse: Maryland @ North Carolina (Saturday 2pm from Chapel Hill, NC live on ESPNU); Johns Hopkins @ Virginia (Saturday 12pm from Charlottesville, VA live on ESPN2); Towson @ Loyola (Saturday 12pm from Ridley Athletic Complex live on AM1570 WNST & WMAR2); Roanoke @ Stevenson (Saturday 1pm Caves Athletic Complex)

Unlike when the schools met in College Park for a hoops game a blizzard ago, the Terrapins and Tar Heels are actually playing a game that is MEANINGFUL for both schools. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite Maryland-UNC memories….

There are plenty…PLENTY…more, but I think you get the point.

4. “The Blind Side” available on DVD/Blu-Ray (Tuesday), “Hot Tub Time Machine” opens in theaters (Friday)

Let me get this straight. Jesse James is married to Sandra Bullock….

And slept with some chick named “Michelle Bombshell”?

But Sandra Bullock adopted Michael Oher! And bought him all those clothes! And won an Academy Award! What the hell?!?!?

Oh, and I’m all in on the “Hot Tube Time Machine” thing (Language NSFW)….

But I’ve been all in on Craig Robinson before….

And for no particular reason, here’s video of Robinson singing “Creep” by Radiohead. It’s a gift, really….

3. NCAA Tournament Sweet 16: Butler vs. Syracuse (Thursday 7:07pm from Salt Lake City live on CBS), Kansas State vs. Xavier (Thursday 9:37pm from Salt Lake City live on CBS); Washington vs. West Virginia (Thursday 7:27pm from Syracuse live on CBS); Cornell vs. Kentucky (Thursday 9:57pm from Syracuse live on CBS); Tennessee vs. Ohio State (Friday 7:07pm from St. Louis live on CBS); Northern Iowa vs. Michigan State (Friday 9:37pm from St. Louis live on CBS); St. Mary’s vs. Baylor (Friday 7:27pm from Houston live on CBS); Duke vs. Purdue (Friday 9:57pm from Houston live on CBS)

Boy…this whole thing felt a lot more exciting a couple days ago, huh?

Those of us who didn’t pick Kansas will clearly be rooting for the teams we DID pick to win now. Well, at least SECRETLY rooting anyway. (Yeah, I picked Syracause; but I don’t know if I’m REALLY rooting for The Orange; or just sorta quietly hoping they might win maybe.)

I guess most of the rest of the country will be rooting for Cornell or Northern Iowa. Which is fine, as long as they’re also rooting AGAINST Duke. That’s just about all that matters at this point.

You know, until we get to this part…

(Edit from GMC: I already have chills, even though I know I’ll have to watch highlights of freaking Korie Lucious. GOD the NCAA Tournament is great. And for the record-in my “second chance” bracket, I DO have St. Mary’s reaching the Final Four.)

2. WWE: WrestleMania XXVI (Sunday 7pm from Glendale, AZ live on Pay-Per-View)

Look, WrestleMania hasn’t been QUITE as great since they abandoned the TLC matches….

…but this is still freaking WRESTLEMANIA we’re talking about. You know, the same event where THIS happened at the Pontiac Silverdome some 23 years ago…

And before we move on, I will make sure I throw in a picture of WWE Diva Maryse. You guys freaking owe me….

1. Mixed Martial Arts: Shogun Fights II (Saturday 6pm 1st Mariner Arena), UFC 111: Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy (Saturday 10pm from Newark live on Pay-Per-View; screened on big screens at AMC Owings Mills and AMC Columbia), Strikeforce Challengers (Friday 11:45pm from Fresno, CA live on Showtime)

If I were you, I’d be watching some MMA this weekend. Since I’m me….well….I’ll be watching some MMA this weekend. For a number of reasons, too.

1-Shogun Fights is going with Heavyweights in the Main Event. LOVE THAT. No word on whether or not “The Blob” will be included.

2-Strikeforce may not have any of their stars (Gina Carano, Bobby Lashley, Dan Henderson, Fedor Emelianenko) on their Challengers cards, but they do have Lavar Johnson-who is fighting just 6 months after being SHOT at a Fourth of July BBQ. Is he a good fighter? No idea. Is 50 Cent a good rapper? No idea. But as Dave Chappelle said… “HE WAS SHOT NINE TIMES!!!”

3-As much as I’m looking forward to Georges St. Pierre and Dan Hardy Saturday night, I’m looking forward EVEN MORE to Frank Mir and Shane Carwin. Those dudes are MANIACS…

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 22 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday……….I think.

Let’s just get this out of the way. Allow Michael Stipe and R.E.M. to set the tone for our day…

So….there you go.

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. The AP’s Nicholas K. Geranios says Korie Lucious’ heroics lifted Michigan State past Maryland in NCAA Tournament 2nd round

After avoiding SportsCenter and ESPNNews as much as possible yesterday-we will remember this once more, and then burn the tape….

6.6 seconds separated Greivis Vasquez from writing one more “greatest moment” in his own Maryland career.

Well, 6.6 seconds and the fact that Tom Izzo thought twice about taking a timeout in the background.

Spare me the “Maryland should have pressed there” comments. 1-Maryland’s press WAS successful late in the game, but had previously lead to a few hundred open looks from 3 for Durrell Summers. Maryland couldn’t have that there. 2-The ONE thing you CAN’T have there is a foul. If a kid hits a shot and beats you, so be it. But you CAN’T foul and give them free throws to win.

A lot of people think they know a lot about a lot of subjects. But yesterday’s game was fairly simple. One team nearly stole away a game with a miracle, the other team used a miracle to win. Read on…

2. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Lucious’ shot will be remembered amongst glorious March moments by hoops fans, yet will anger Terps fans for eternity

As I said in the blog, now we know how Kentucky fans feel every time they have to see a replay of Christian Laettner’s three ball.

If you’re not a college hoops fan, think about how Phillies fans must feel every time they see a replay of Joe Carter’s home run. Or how Bills fans feel every time they see a replay of the “Music City Miracle” against the Titans in Nashville. Or how Patriots fans feel every time they see a replay of David Tyree’s catch in Super Bowl XLIII. It HURTS them.

Prepare to deal with the hurt for some time. This time next week, CBS will be showing replays as Michigan State prepares to play Northern Iowa in the Sweet 16. This time next March, CBS and ESPN will be showing replays as Maryland (hopefully) and Michigan State prepare for the Big Dance. This time 5 years from now, there will be retrospectives and “Where are they now?” pieces on Korie Lucious.

It will still hurt then. It might not be the sting that it is today, but it will still hurt.

3. Spokane Spokesman-Review’s Steve Bergum says Spartans played 2nd half of win over Terrapins without former Big Ten Player of the Year Kalin Lucas

And clearly, it made a difference down the stretch-which we all knew it would. If Lucas was on the floor, it is likely that the Terps would have NEVER gotten back into the game late, as he would have been a crucial part of beating the Gary Williams press.

That being said-and we talked about this on “The Comcast Morning Show” this morning on AM1570-the players on the floor have to be able to beat the press. When Duke came back from down 10 in the final 54 seconds to beat Maryland at Cole Field House, Terps fans bellyached that things would have been different had Drew Nicholas not been forced to run the point with Steve Blake disqualified by fouls. That’s absolutely true, but Nicholas NEEDED to be able to make free throws-even as a sophomore-or he shouldn’t have been on the floor.

Whoever was on the floor for Michigan State-no matter the reason-SHOULD have been able to break the press. They couldn’t. Had they lost, there would have been plenty of people that would have said “they wouldn’t have lost had Kalin Lucas not been hurt.” They would have been right, and it would have been irrelevant.

Before I move on, I’m reminded of a REALLY good song by Unwritten Law. The spelling’s different, but the name remains the same….

Of course, that song name would have worked in this classic Family Guy scene that always makes me giggle.

(Edit from GMC: On days like today, it’s good to giggle.)

4. Washington Post’s Mike Wise says ‘stake through the heart’ necessary to end Greivis Vasquez’s tenure in College Park

Allright, I guess we have to move on from the subject-as what else can be said about the end to a TREMENDOUS career for Greivis Vasquez. The sad part about it is that for as good as he’s been, he played only 6 NCAA Tournament games in his 4 year career. That isn’t a great number. Juan Dixon played six….teen.

Before I move on, some quick thoughts on how I spent my first post-Maryland season Sunday night. As you all know, baseball doesn’t do a whole hell of a lot for me, and there is no lacrosse on Sunday nights. While we’ll still get one late-afternoon basketball game next week, this is really when Sunday nights go south until the fall.

I watched some of the UFC Fights, although I thought at one point that even I was going to be elbowed by Cheick Kongo in the process. My roommate made me watch some of the healthcare coverage, which only lead to my poor girlfriend (you know her, “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet”) getting REALLY confused. I watched Family Guy, and did my damndest not to laugh at the Terri Schiavo musical scene. I really did.

I also watched a replay of another Andy Roddick failure (this time in the finals at Indian Wells) and some of the Tiger Woods interviews. It all left me wanting some more quality Sunday night television. Like, isn’t it about time this gal got a new show…

5. Inside Lacrosse’s Tommy Kehoe says hat tricks from Christian Pastirik, Matt Hughes not enough as Towson fell to Virginia at Unitas Stadium

Clearly, this lacrosse season is starting to shape up as a small group of “haves” (Virginia, Syracuse, North Carolina, Maryland, maybe Princeton, Cornell and Hofstra as well) and a big group of “have nots.”

A shakeup in my “OldLineLax7” Poll….

3-Johns Hopkins
6-Mt. St. Mary’s

If you would have told me the Mountaineers would have had more wins than either the Retrievers or the Tigers at this point, I would have said you were INSANE. Of course, they have played an easier schedule.

6. Maryland Official Site says Terps women topped East Carolina, advanced to third round of WNIT

Next up for Brenda Frese’s team is a Thursday night matchup against the Old Dominion/Providence winner at Comcast Center.

(Edit from GMC: I’d like to be excited about this. I really would. And for the record, I’m rooting for them. I’m also rooting for Syracuse, because…well….I could use the cash.)

7. MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki says Kevin Millwood solid as Birds topped Phillies in Clearwater

Which means that between the Orioles’ Top 2 pitchers in the rotation, 1 has had a good start during Spring Training.

One good start.

(Edit from GMC: I’m really not freaking about Kevin Millwood’s struggles during Grapefruit League play. I’m MUCH more concerned about Jeremy Guthrie’s struggles. He DOESN’T have the track record. I’m also MUCH more concerned about figuring out how a girl like the one pictured below could be from Philly…)

8. The Sun’s Peter Schmuck and Dan Connolly say Brian Roberts had ‘no problem’ taking swings from left or right side of plate

Please, please spare me the “switch hitter” jokes. Mostly because I’ve already thought of ALL of them.

I’m sure it goes without saying that the O’s are MUCH better off if B-Rob is in the lineup 2 weeks from tomorrow night at Tropicana Field. But….I’ll say it anyway, because that’s why I’m paid the big bucks.

That and because I was once again crowned the king of duckpin bowling Saturday night at Stoneleigh Lanes. I took 2 out of 3 games from Nestor Aparicio spawn Barry Aparicio…and he’s from Dundalk!

He wanted me to remind everyone that he actually posted the highest score of the night in the 3rd game. I reminded him that doing that is sort of like having a gal tell you that she thinks you look like Jack Black…..

I mean….it’s better than being told you like Ray Bachman….

9. Examiner Jay Trucker says Orioles sent Caleb Joseph, Blake Davis, Luis Bernardo, Miguel Abreu, Matt Angle, Michel Hernandez to minor league camp

And they’ll be missed.

It’s not REALLY all that bad going from Birds’ Spring Training in Sarasota to minor league Spring Training in Sarasota. I mean, other than the food. It’s sort of like going from Capital Grille…

to McDonald’s….

10. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Ravens will learn whether they’re playing Monday Night Football opener/Thanksgiving night game, compensatory picks fate during annual NFL meetings in Orlando

No thanks to the trip to East Rutherford on Thanksgiving night. Yes please to a Monday Night Football game at M&T Bank Stadium to open the season.

That is all.

11. Baltimore Blast Official Site says regular season ended with 19-12 loss to KiXX in Philadelphia

Now the Blast open the playoffs Friday night in Monterrey-with Game 2 against La Raza next Monday in Charm City.

12. Fayetteville Observer says Baltimore Mariners roughed up Fayetteville Guard 59-0 at 1st Mariner Arena

It’s not that I’m NOT excited about Mariners football, I’m just MORE excited to find out if the Lingerie Football League team will be playing in the same building….

And finally, I leave you with this.

I won’t be able to watch Maryland anymore during CBS’ coverage of the NCAA Tournament, but I WILL be able to jam out to this Kevin Rudolf/Lil’ Wayne jam…..

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983….

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 15 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Boxing-Wladimir Klitschko vs. Eddie Chambers (Saturday 6pm from Dusseldorf, Germany streamed live at Klitschko.com), Bowling: PBA Go RVing Match Play Championship (Sunday 1pm from Norwich, CT live on ESPN); Golf: PGA Tour Transitions Championship (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel; Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on NBC. Every stroke from Tampa Bay), MISL: Baltimore Blast @ Philadelphia KiXX (Sunday 4:05pm from Philly streamed live at B2LiveTV.com), AIFA: Fayetteville Guard @ Baltimore Mariners (Sunday 4pm 1st Mariner Arena), NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament (Saturday-Monday from various locations live on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPN360)

10. Pietasters (Wednesday 8pm Rams Head Live), Charm City Devils (Friday 8pm Rams Head Live), Mat Kearney (Saturday 7pm Rams Head Live), Daughtry/Lifehouse/Cavo (Thursday 7:30pm 1st Mariner Arena), Mike Epps & Bruce Bruce (Saturday 8pm 1st Mariner Arena), Alkaline Trio (Tuesday 7pm Recher Theatre), O’Malley’s March (Saturday 8pm Recher Theatre), The Ataris (Tuesday 7pm Ottobar)

It’s not the most overwhelming lineup of music to come through town, but it does include some strong moments. Like when the Ataris channel Don Henley…..

Or when Chris Daughtry does….well….just about anything…..

Or when Alkaline Trio uses some naughty words that are clearly NSFW (unless of course you work at The Ottobar. In which case your 6 year old might well already be singing this song)…

9. TNA “Destination X” (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View)

You can say WHATEVER YOU WANT. Understand that I fully support the idea of competition in an industry. But I’m not buying into TNA as a legitimate threat to WWE. I AM however buying into TNA Knockout Velvet Sky as a legitimate threat to my pants feeling a bit tighter…..

8. NASCAR Food City 500 (Sunday 1pm from Bristol, TN live on FOX)

I’ve been to Bristol. Did you know that Bristol, Tennessee is known as “The Birthplace of Country Music”? Apparently Queens, New York finished just outside the Top 5 in voting.

And while I’m SOMEWHAT interested in The Birthplace of Country Music, I’d be much more interested in the Current place of Country Music star Kellie Pickler….

(Edit from GMC: I bet she has good hygiene.)

7. NBA: Wizards @ Nuggets (Tuesday 9pm from Denver live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Wizards @ Trailblazers (Friday 10pm from Portland live on Comcast SportsNet), Wizards @ Lakers (Sunday 9:30pm from Los Angeles live on Comcast SportsNet)

Wait, the ‘Zards are playing against Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant this week? SOMEONE MIGHT ACTUALLY WATCH THEM!!!!

And….the reason none of you jerks let me know about there being a new version of NBA JAM coming out for Nintendo Wii was?????…….

6. NHL: Capitals @ Panthers (Tuesday 7:30pm from Sunrise, FL live on Comcast SportsNet), Capitals @ Hurricanes(Thursday 7pm from Raleigh live on Comcast SportsNet), Capitals @ Lightning (Saturday 7:30pm from Tampa Bay live on Comcast SportsNet)

After his most recent cheap shot and suspension, some Caps fans are starting to wonder if Alex Ovechkin is a “dirty” player. Hell, I care about as much about the Caps as I do the Tokyo Giants, yet even I wonder about the guy sometimes.

Of course, it’s hard to say someone like “The Great 8” is dirty, especially in comparison to others throughout sports history who were ABSOLUTELY dirty. For example, someone like Eddie Guerero…who was so dirty he untied his boot knowing Kurt Angle would go for “The Ankle Lock” at WrestleMania….

5. Tennis: ATP BNP Paribas Open (Tuesday-Saturday 3pm live on Tennis Channel, Sunday 3pm live on Comcast SportsNet locally/Fox Sports Net nationally. All tennis from Indian Wells, CA)

I don’t care WHY it happened. All I know is that for a brief moment this weekend, my life was more “awesome” than “awkward” again….

For the record- Andre Agassi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pete Sampras. Agassi OWNS.

4. College Lacrosse: Maryland @ UMBC (Saturday 12pm from UMBC Stadium live on WMAR 2 & ESPNU), Syracuse @ Johns Hopkins (Saturday 8pm from Homewood Field live on ESPNU), Navy @ Towson (Tuesday 7pm Unitas Stadium), Virginia @ Towson (Sunday 12pm from Unitas Stadium live on WMAR 2 & ESPNU), Air Force @ Loyola (Saturday 1pm from Ridley Athletic Complex live on AM1570 WNST & MASN), Holy Cross @ Navy (Saturday 12pm Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium), Stevens @ Stevenson (Wednesday 4pm Caves Athletic Complex)

I went to a handful of colleges during my career as “Guy Who Isn’t Ready to Figure Out What to do With His Life”, but Towson University wasn’t one of them. Essex Community College, UMBC, and of course the University of Maryland were all amongst them; but Towson wasn’t.

With that being said, there will be NO bigger fan of Tony Seaman and the Tigers….EVER….this weekend than your boy.

Virginia SUCKS. Virginia traffic sucks. Virginia students suck. Virginia laws suck (you can’t buy beer at liquor stores! WTF?!?)

In fact, the only thing about Virginia that doesn’t suck was that tune by Train….

And that’s only a technicality, because the “Hey Soul Sister” song by Train that everyone likes these days is freaking awful too.

3. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC Live (Sunday 9pm from Broomfield, CO live on VERSUS)

Look, I trust Dana White as much as any other MMA fan in the world, but hiring James Toney….

is ONLY a good idea if it is setting up for a future mixed fight/canoli eating competition against Roy Nelson….

….otherwise…..not a fan…..

2. St. Patrick’s Day (Wednesday)

Here’s what I see in my future….

I’m not Irish and I’m not going to pretend to be. I’m just going to pretend to be sober.

1. NCAA Basketball Tournament (Thursday-Sunday from multiple locations live on CBS); Maryland vs. Houston (Friday 9:40pm from Spokane, WA live on CBS), Morgan State vs. West Virginia (Friday 12:15pm from Buffalo live on CBS)

Is there a more beautiful sound than the sound CBS uses to show that a score update is coming on the bottom of the screen during March Madness??? I think not. Well, maybe this….

Or I guess Gus Johnson’s voice…..

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…..

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 15 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday!

It’s a Happy Monday for me because-while my trip to Greensboro was disappointing (I know Georgia Tech is a tough team-but I did NOT expect a first round loss in the ACC Tournament), my trip to North Carolina was not.

First of all, kudos to WNST.net’s own Sam Angell-who directed me towards a place called Biscuitville. Much like many things in life, you don’t have to know you’ve been searching for something in order to find it….

I would also like to send a shout-out to a place called “The Cook-Out”, which was in the neighborhood of Elon University. How many freaking colleges are in that general area? And I’ll throw in a plug for Guilford Golden Ale….

…but I will not confirm nor deny that the current scrape on my nose has anything to do with trying to open a Guilford Golden Ale in my hotel room despite not having a bottle opener.

All rumors.

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Terps get 4 seed, headed to Spokane to face Houston

The 4 is even higher than I thought they would get. I presumed there were a definite 5 after the loss to the Yellow Jackets.

That being said, there’s no doubt in my mind that they would GLADLY trade spots with a team like Notre Dame just to get out of the INSANE Midwest region.

Talk about a gauntlet…

Kansas. Ohio State. Georgetown. Maryland. Michigan State. Tennessee. Oklahoma State. UNLV. Northern Iowa. Georgia Tech.

I feel like taking a page from Seth Meyers and Jerry Seinfeld and saying “REALLY?”

For as much of a sting as it is for Maryland, it is clearly much MORE of a sting for the Jayhawks-as the best team in the NCAA Tournament deserves better. Much better in fact.

That being said, this is the NCAA Tournament. Nothing is easy. I never thought Maryland was a Final Four team myself, but I think getting back to the Sweet 16 is an important measure for this team, and that won’t be easy with the Spartans potentially looming in Round 2.

2. The Sun’s Ken Murray says Morgan State got 15 seed, headed to Buffalo to face West Virginia

Todd Bozeman’s club certainly deserved to not be doomed to a Number 16 seed. We talked to Reggie Holmes last night on our “Selection Sunday” special on AM1570 WNST; and we pointed out that there is something-mentally-to be said about going into a game like this knowing that you only have to win a game-not rewrite history.

I know there is a history of #15 seeded MEAC teams beating #2 seeds (Coppin State over South Carolina, Hampton over Iowa State); and there MIGHT be an argument that the ‘Eers are similar to South Carolina or Iowa State-as those were teams with great guards but not a whole lot of size (Iowa State had lost Marcus Fizer a season earlier).

That being said, this WVU team has HORSES. De’Sean Butler and Devin Ebanks aren’t JUST good combo forwards. They’re absolute thoroughbreds. They control the offense and they’re 6’8″ and 6’7″ respectively.

There’s nothing the Bears can do to answer that, even if Kevin Thompson has some success inside.

3. CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd says Terrapins ‘dark horse’ candidate to reach Final Four from Midwest bracket

I guess.

I’ve never thought Maryland was a Final Four team myself-although I heard a few national analysts who were at the ACC Tournament tell me they were starting to think they might be.

If the Terps are going to be that “dark horse”, they’ll have to regain the emotional edge that CLEARLY was gone Friday night against the Jackets.

If they show up flat-they’ll struggle against Houston, and they’ll have no chance against Tom Izzo’s club.

If they show up with a chip on their shoulder, they’re capable of winning a lot of games.

But it will be hard to use the crowd at the Spokane Arena to try to create an edge.

4. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Gary Williams-Tom Penders provide intriguing coaching matchup

It is rare to get a 1st round matchup of coaches with 600+ wins. What makes this particular matchup special is the fact that you have two 600+ win coaches who have a history together.

Gary Williams is 2-1 all-time against Penders (he’s also 2-1 against Izzo for the record); splitting two meetings with George Washington in the BB&T Classic, and topping Texas in the 1995 NCAA Tournament.

And before we move on from the Maryland-Houston matchup, let me point out that there are two things I DO like about Houston. One-their city is the home of this person….

AND….It is hard for me to have that much venom towards a team called the Cougars…

5. Washington Post’s Steve Yanda says Selection Sunday was more ‘relaxed’ at Comcast Center this year than last year

And of course it should have been.

That being said, as there was less tension, there was also less jubilation in College Park-as no one was overly thrilled with having to take a trip to Spokane. Eric Hayes mentioned that last night when he joined our “Selection Sunday” special on AM1570.

It’s not just because Spokane is kind of a lame city-it’s because asking family, friends and fans to try to travel from Baltimore, Washington or other points in the area to Spokane is very difficult.

I’ve never understood why the NCAA continues to deliver events to places like Spokane, Boise and Buffalo. The HSBC Arena in Buffalo got Tournament games back this year after hosting them just 3 years ago!

These cities make places like Detroit and Cleveland appear downright appealing!!!

6. The Daily Athenaeum’s Brian Gawthrop says Mountaineers ‘disappointed’ to get #2 seed, opener against Morgan

And after winning the Big East Tournament, they probably deserved a #1 seed. That being said, they’re not in a TERRIBLE bracket, as I think Kentucky is just as vulnerable as Duke amongst the top seeds. When your team is lead by freshmen (as the Wildcats are), there is a chance you might well lose early.

And no matter what happens Friday in Buffalo, there are DEFINITE areas where Charm City > West Virginia….

7. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Brian Matusz went 5 innings as Orioles beat Phillies Sunday

Which is a GREAT sign, as he became the first O’s pitcher to work through the 4th inning in Grapefruit League play.

That being said, they need to be seeing 5 innings from other pitchers now as we’re about halfway through Spring Training. But if this is a sign that Brian Matusz is ready to REALLY pitch come Opening Day, that’s a MAJOR plus for the Orioles.

8. Carroll County Times’ Rich Dubroff says Brian Roberts headed back to Baltimore to see back specialist

We KNEW this was a bigger situation than Dave Trembley and the Orioles wanted to let us know.

What do the Orioles do now? Stacey Long from Camden Chat threw out Mark Loretta during her visit with Drew Forrester this morning on “The Comcast Morning Show” on AM1570. That name makes sense, as he is a player that could be acquired without having to give anything up anything. Mark Loretta could wear Orange & Black until B-Rob was healthy again, and then make a decision about what to do with Loretta.

My suggestion was this guy…..

9. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says ‘crawling to Cleveland’ probably no longer an option for Troy Smith

Has any team ever made it more clear that they WEREN’T interested in a player than the Browns have with Troy Smith?

“Troy wants to come to Baltimore, huh? Let’s go get Seneca Wallace. AND let’s go get Jake Delhomme. Is Craig Krenzel available?”

I’m still surprised the Cardinals haven’t made a move to acquire some QB depth. Not that I think Troy Smith would necessarily be any sort of answer, but I do know that there are a bunch of Ohio State fans in the Phoenix area. It would likely be a popular move.

10. Maryland Official Site previews matinee lacrosse battle with Penn today at Ludwig Field

Dave Cottle’s squad is off to a great start this season, and certainly should continue today against the Quakers-even if the game comes during Spring Break.

Here’s this week’s “OldLineLax7” Poll….

2-Johns Hopkins
6-Mt. St. Mary’s

Hopkins is fortunate that everyone else lost….

11. Daily Racing Form’s Marcus Hersh says Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra won’t face Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta at Apple Blossom Invitational

Which means that horse racing’s one shot at relevance outside of Triple Crown season is now gone.

In the meantime, enjoy pictures of Rachel Hunter….

12. WNST.net says Baltimore Mariners topped New Jersey Revolution at 1st Mariner Arena

I heard some reports that before the game, there was plenty of fist pumping in the New Jersey locker room…..

And finally, I leave you with this.

I love Steve Francis. He had a HELL of a year for Gary Williams, even if the Terps lost to St. John’s in the Sweet 16. BUT….clearly his lack of playing time in Orlando is effecting his sideline demeanor…. (Thanks Deadspin!)

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 08 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: AIFA-New Jersey Revolution @ Baltimore Mariners (Sunday 4pm 1st Mariner Arena); MISL: Rockford Rampage @ Baltimore Blast (Friday 7:35pm from 1st Mariner Arena streamed live at B2liveTV.com), Philadelphia KiXX @ Baltimore Blast (Saturday 7:35pm from 1st Mariner Arena streamed live at B2liveTV.com); NBA: Rockets @ Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Hawks @ Wizards (Thursday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Wizards @ Pistons (Friday 8pm from Detroit live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Magic @ Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet & NBA TV), Wizards @ Jazz (Monday 9pm from Salt Lake City live on Comcast SportsNet); Tennis: ATP BNP Paribas Open (Saturday & Sunday 2pm, Monday 3pm from Indian Wells, CA live on Tennis Channel)

10. They Might Be Giants (Friday 8pm Recher Theatre), Dropkick Murphys (Tuesday 7pm 9:30 Club), JET & Carbon Leaf (Friday 7:15am 9:30 Club), Shamrockfest featuring The Roots, Train, etc. (Saturday 1pm RFK Stadium), Five For Fighting (Tuesday 8pm Lisner Auditorium), Ron White (Saturday 7pm & 10pm Warner Theatre), Harland Williams (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv)

It’s not exactly the GREATEST week of live shows in the world…but there are some interesting things here….

For example, while I won’t be able to make it to Shamrockfest Saturday, I SERIOUSLY support the concept. I also support The Roots, who have been one of the greatest things to happen to music…like…ever….

The show Friday morning at 9:30 Club is called “Kegs and Eggs”, which is also a concept I’m fully behind. Of course, drinking beer while eating eggs is something I like to just call “Breakfast” myself…

And since BOTH events include Carbon Leaf, I’m reminded that Carbon Leaf is SO FREAKING AWESOME…..

9. WWE-Shawn Michaels: My Journey available in stores on DVD (Tuesday), Jimi Hendrix “Valleys of Neptune” available in stores (Tuesday)

I don’t usually go to the store to buy music anymore-I usually choose iTunes these days. But no matter what I do, I’m totally confused about this whole Jimi Hendrix thing. You mean to tell me that Jimi Hendrix has been dead for FORTY YEARS and they’re just now discovering unreleased music????

I mean, even 2Pac stopped putting out new music a few years back, and he’s only been gone for about 15 years! What’s next, some unreleased material from Bach???

If I was headed to Best Buy (or wherever it is people go to buy new releases these days) Tuesday, I’d probably shell out the cash for the Shawn Michaels DVD set, truthfully. I’m a total mark for HBK….

8. Golf: WGC CA Championship (Thursday & Friday 2pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday 2pm Sunday 3pm live on NBC. All golf from Doral, FL), PGA Puerto Rico Open (Thursday-Saturday 6:30, Sunday 7:30pm from Rio Grande, PR live on Golf Channel)

Look, I don’t have a freaking clue why John Daly started modeling underwear a few weeks ago….

But I do know that I personally think Tiger Woods’ friend Loredana Jolie would have been a better choice….

7. College Football: Maryland Pro Timing Day (Wednesday Cole Field House & Gossett Team House)

My suggestion to Bruce Campbell (shoe-in), Terrell Skinner, Nolan Carroll, Chris Turner and all others participating Wednesday in College Park: Run faster than Rich Eisen….

And before we move off the topic of Bruce Campbell, as great as his Old Spice commercial was….

This is better….

6. NHL: Hurricanes @ Capitals (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet & NHL Network), Lightning @ Capitals (Friday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Capitals @ Blackhawks (Sunday 12:30pm from Chicago live on NBC)

Remember when the whole country had hockey fever about a week ago? So….ummm…..whatever happened to that????

For the record, I literally don’t think I can name a single player for Tampa Bay. Vincent LeCavalier or whatever the hell that french guy’s name was? Is he on the team?

I know Patrick Kane plays for the Hawks, but I don’t think I can name anyone else. Maybe Stan Mikita? Wayne & Garth?

5. College Lacrosse: Towson @ Maryland (Saturday 11am from Byrd Stadium live on WMAR2 & ESPNU), Penn @ Maryland (Monday 3pm Ludwig Field); UMBC @ Johns Hopkins (Tuesday 7pm from Homewood Field live on ESPNU); Duke @ Loyola (Saturday 3pm from Ridley Athletic Complex live on AM1570 WNST); Lycoming @ Stevenson (Saturday 1pm Caves Athletic Complex)

I’d like to congratulate everyone in the Greyhounds family (even you Chris Bonetti) on the opening of your new stadium. It’s a big deal.

Of course, it would be a bigger deal if you were opening KITCHEN Stadium….

4. Boxing: Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey (Saturday 9pm from Arlington, TX live on HBO PPV)

I wasn’t NEARLY as excited about this fight until I saw that Manny Pacquiao may or may not be dating someone named Krista Ranillo….

(Edit from GMC: Attention attractive females-if I allow another man to punch me in the face repeatedly, will you sleep with me? A simple “yes” or “no” will do here.)

3. High School Basketball State Semifinals: 1A-Allegany vs. Dunbar (Friday 3pm), Snow Hill vs. Owings Mills (Friday 5pm)-Final Saturday 1pm; 2A-North Carroll vs. Gwynn Park (Friday 7pm), Easton vs. City (Friday 9pm)-Final Saturday 6pm; 3A-Blake vs. Thomas Stone (Thursday 3pm), Stephen Decatur vs. Milford Mill (Thursday 5pm)-Final Saturday 3pm; 4A-Springbrook vs. Eleanor Roosevelt (Thursday 7pm), Old Mill vs. Urbana (Thursday 9pm)-Final Saturday 8pm. All games from Comcast Center.

As a reminder, if you’re poking around College Park this weekend….

It’s illegal, and it isn’t cool. (Edit from GMC: You know what, cast your own judgments on what is or isn’t cool. I’m sick of you always leaving it up to me. It’s DEFINITELY illegal though.)

2. Ed Block Courage Awards (Tuesday 6:15pm Martin’s West)

Look, I think Dawan Landry, Michael Vick, EJ Henderson, Shawne Merriman, Marlin Jackson, Mike Furrey, et. al. are as deserving as anyone might be to win one of these awards; but I can’t help but wonder where a certain other NFL quarterback is on this list…..

….my apologies, apparently they aren’t the Ed Block “Liquid Courage” Awards. My apologies.

1. College Basketball: ACC Tournament: Maryland vs. North Carolina/Georgia Tech winner (Friday 7pm from Greensboro live on Raycom Sports-WNUV 54 locally, ESPN2 nationally-Championship Game Sunday 2pm from Greensboro live on Raycom/ESPN); MEAC Tournament Championship Game (Saturday 2pm from Winston-Salem live on ESPN2); Big East Tournament Championship Game (Saturday 9pm from New York live on ESPN); SEC Tournament Championship Game (Sunday 12pm from Nashville live on ABC); Big Ten Tournament Championship Game (Sunday 3:30pm from Indianapolis live on CBS); Big 12 Tournament Championship Game (Saturday 6pm from Kansas City live on ESPN); Pac 10 Tournament Championship Game (Saturday 6pm from Los Angeles live on CBS); America East Tournament Championship Game (Saturday 12pm from Burlington, VT live on ESPN); Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship Game (Sunday 1pm from Atlantic City live on CBS); Conference USA Tournament Championship Game (Saturday 11:35am from Tulsa, OK live on CBS); Selection Sunday (coverage Sunday 6pm live on CBS/ESPN/AM1570 WNST)

So….the closest Bojangles to Greensboro is where???

Look, if you’re a Maryland fan traveling to the ACC Tournament this weekend, let’s meet up somewhere. You plan it. I’ll just show up and drink your beer. If that’s okay. If it isn’t, don’t invite me. If you’re a Duke fan traveling to Greensboro this weekend for the ACC Tournament, I hope you have a miserable weekend. If you’re a Duke fan traveling to Greensboro this weekend who is willing to buy me a beer, let me know.

I know this much. I’d pay any amount of money to see this again…..

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…..
