Jones, Teixeira set for UFC 172 title fight Saturday night in Baltimore

Posted on 25 April 2014 by WNST Staff

By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer

Jon Jones went from pound-for-pound the best fighter inside the octagon to just plain pounded.

Jones took a beating, the worst one of his record reign, in a bout against Alexander Gustafsson that knocked the light heavyweight champion on the canvas for the first time in his career and put his belt in jeopardy.

Looking as human and humbled as ever, Jones wouldn’t let his hard-earned championship slip away easily and gutted out another title defense — a UFC record sixth straight — that set up him up to find another challenger of the month.

Enter Glover Teixeira. Teixeira boasts a whopping 20-bout winning streak that dates nine years and is coming off a first-round TKO of Ryan Bader.

Jones (19-1) and Teixeira (22-2) fight in the main event of UFC 172 Saturday night when the promotion makes its debut in Baltimore.

Phil Davis fights Anthony Johnson in the other headline bout.

Jones, one of UFC’s biggest active pay-per-view draws, won a unanimous decision against Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September. Gustafsson cut the champion at the right eye midway through the first round. And with a minute left, he took Jones down for the first time in the champion’s UFC career.

Jones said he knew he was as close as ever to dropping the belt.

“I realized I needed to switch up my strategy and begin improvising a little bit more, and that’s what I did,” he said. “I think with Gus I was trying to fight like a technical kick boxing match and I think I was losing at that. I just had to switch my style up and start flowing a little better and start winging things, making up, creating, and finding new openings.”

He found enough of them to escape and put his name in the record book.

With the win, Jones passed UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz’s light heavyweight mark of five straight successful title defenses. After beating Shogun Rua on March 20, 2011 to win the belt, Jones went on to defeat Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen and Gustafsson..

He beat all but Evans and Gustafsson during the streak via TKO or submission, and three times earned UFC fight of the night honors. Known as “Bones,” Jones said it’s time to return to his dominant form to keep the streak going.

“I’m totally prepared to fight for five rounds, but my goal in this fight is to dominate the fight in a way that no one seen possible,” he said. Domination is in my psychology. It’s the way I train. It’s the way I eat. It’s the way I visualize. It’s the way I believe.

“If I don’t dominate the fight, I’ll still be happy with the victory. But domination is what I’m planning on.”

Teixeira, the No. 2 title contender, is 5-0 since jumping to UFC but a 5-1 underdog in the fight of his life.

“My strategy against Jon Jones is simple, go out there and be myself and knock this guy out,” he said. “I’ve been training my whole life for this.”

Jones, a former college wrestler and the brother of two NFL players, nearly suffered a broken arm in his win over Belfort and broke a toe against Sonnen. Winning while hurt, then turning around the Gustafsson bout in the final two rounds, proved to Jones he can win under any circumstances.

“After that Gustafsson fight, I’m even more confident in my will,” he said. “I know I have a lot of will. I know that I’m armed with that going into this battle on Saturday night.

Jones has two brothers in the NFL, including Arthur, a Super Bowl champion with the Ravens who now plays for the Colts. Arthur Jones will be at Baltimore Arena with some of his former teammates rooting on his brother for the feel of a hometown advantage.

“They supported our family while he was here and that’s why I wanted to fight here,” Jon Jones said. “I hope his leaving doesn’t change anything because I still love the fans and the support they have given to me and our family.”

While I recover from a vicious leg kick, you should get your UFC 172 tickets

Posted on 05 February 2014 by Glenn Clark

Well, it happened again.

If you’ll recall-UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones stopped by the WNST studios last fall to help us raise canned goods during our annual drive to benefit an area charity-this time SARC in Harford County.

When he came in, he decided that in order to raise some more canned goods-it would be appropriate to punch me in the stomach. Because I’ve never been accused of being particularly intelligent, I obliged.

Flash forward to Wednesday. JBJ returned to the studio after we had seen him last Friday in New York ahead of Super Bowl XLVIII. When we saw him, Jones requested that we raise more canned goods (and boy did WNST listeners come through in a very quick turnaround) and later asked that I participate in another stunt.

(If you missed Wednesday’s segment Jon did with Thyrl & I on “The Mobtown Sports Beat” on WNST, check it out here in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault at WNST.net.)

Jones requested that this time I take a kick to the leg.

For some inexplicable reason (or mostly because I remain touched and humbled by the kindness shown to the WNST community by the pound for pound greatest fighter in the world and “The Baddest Man on the Face of the Planet”), I acquiesced.

And now I can say I have been punched AND kicked by the champ.

If in your sick and twisted mind you’re thinking to yourself “man, I’d really like to see a more direct look at you being taken out at the thigh, Glenn”; you’re in luck!

Yeah, he didn’t miss.

So I’ll be spending Thursday morning icing down my thigh and hobbling back into Towson to prepare for the next show. I’ve got a much better idea for how you should spend your Thursday morning.

Jones was in town promoting UFC 172, which goes down April 26 at the Baltimore Arena. He’ll be defending the belt against rising fighter Glover Teixeira (and don’t we just love booing Teixeira in Baltimore?) as the main event on a stacked card for the first ever UFC event in Baltimore.

Tickets for the event go on-sale to the general public Friday morning and will almost certainly be gone QUICKLY. But you can grab yours up Thursday thanks to a partnership between WNST, the Baltimore Arena and UFC.

Head to this Ticketmaster link Thursday morning at 10am (or until 9am Friday) to purchase your tickets using the special password “UFCRADIO”. (All caps.)

If you’d like, you can even tell your friends via social media, text, etc.

This is one of the more significant sporting events to have come to our city in some time and we’re giving you the chance to guarantee you’ll be a part of it. You don’t even have to take a nasty leg kick from Jon Jones in order to take advantage of the opportunity.

Don’t be the guy who wonders what it would have been like to be a part of the event after it happens. Be the guy bragging about what an awesome time you had at one of the coolest events you’ll ever have the chance to take in here in Baltimore. Get your tickets FIRST THING Thursday morning.

And thanks again to those who brought canned goods. And to Jon Jones for his charming hospitality and continuous participation in our charitable endeavors.

But no more punches or kicks the next time. I beg you.

Hi! I’m the idiot that took two punches from the baddest man on the face of the planet

Hi! I’m the idiot that took two punches from the baddest man on the face of the planet

It was a pleasure for having UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones stop by the Zone Superstore Studios of WNST Thursday during “The Reality Check”.

Jon spent the last couple of days on a media blitz celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary. As part of his stop in Baltimore, he spoke to the Baltimore Ravens at their Owings Mills training facility. Jon’s brother is Arthur Jones-the Ravens DL who is playing very well in 2013. Here are the brothers chatting with the media, courtesy of our own Luke Jones.

After hanging out in Owings Mills, Jon was kind enough to head over to Towson to hang with Thyrl Nelson and I. We talked about a great number of topics, including his older brother’s sack dancing (and twerking?), Richie Incognito, hazing in UFC, his last fight against Alexander Gustafsson, his next fight against Glover Teixeira and so much more. If you missed any of it-take a listen in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here.

After the segment, Jon proved what a true champ he is-as he spent the next 15 minutes or so chatting with listeners that had come with donations to our annual canned good drive-helping to stock the food pantry for SARC in Harford County. Since I had told Jon I had always wanted to know what it felt like to get punched by him, he obliged me right there in the lobby in front of the guests.

As you MIGHT be able to tell from that video, Jon actually didn’t catch me flush on the first shot (although it still hurt like hell), so he wanted another punch. I negotiated with the listeners to get a promise they’d donate more canned goods, so I obliged Jon. This time he wanted to punch me in the stomach. I have absolutely no idea why, but I allowed it.

If I was single, you could bet your ass I’d walk around to every young lady I could find at every establishment in town and ask “Have you ever met a guy who’s taken two punches from the Light Heavyweight Champion of the World?”

Instead, I came home, watched Maryland trudge through a sloppy win and ate some Sun Chips with a few ice bags and a bottle of Ibuprofen.

It was a thrill. A really freaking painful thrill.

Now get us some more canned goods. PLEASE!
