Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 November 2009 by Glenn Clark

Don’t have much time to contribute today. I was surprised by John Harbaugh’s candor yesterday, but it was a refreshing change of pace. I still think he needs to cool down on being so rough around the edges. I know it seems trivial, but I truly believe uptight coaches tend to not handle adversity quite as well.

But good for Harbs for taking responsibility for the team’s struggles, emphatically stating that HE needed to improve, and admitting that he screwed up in making the comments he made about Dallas and Philadelphia.

Now he just has to figure the football part out. No problem, right?

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

McCarver is giving me a headache

Posted on 01 November 2009 by dansoderberg

I’ll get to McCarver in a moment. First off, the Orioles are selling hope based on the Arizona Fall League performances of prospects Josh Bell and Brandon Snyder. The two corner infield prospects have combined for 4 HRs and 25 RBI and their first 93 ABs in Arizona. The power showing of Snyder is encouraging (3 HRs in 51 ABs) given that he hit only 2 HRs in 262 ABs after a mid-season promotion to Norfolk. When the Orioles fail to acquire a power hitting 1st or 3rd basemen this offseason, rest assured that Bell and Snyder will be sold as the saviors.

I’d hate to be the pitching rubber at Citizens Bank Park tonight. Blanton is listed at 225 lbs. and that’s selling him short. Sabathia is listed at 250 and he looks like he should be playing left tackle for the Jets.

Every October (now November) baseball fans are forced to put up with Fox’s broadcast coupling of the smug Joe Buck and the perpetually clueless Tim McCarver. My distaste for McCarver goes back to my childhood when he was the color analyst on the Mets’ broadcasts on WWOR. Each game was filled with McCarver’s inane, pointless stories and Ralph Kiner’s obvious drunkenness. Listening to McCarver blather on for 3 innings tonight about how he didn’t think Blanton hit A-Rod intentionally made me long for Kiner to burst into the booth with a bottle of Jack. Blanton hit A-Rod for 2 reasons: 1. First base was open and it’s easier to hit him with one pitch than waste 4 to walk him; and 2. It sends a message and gets Sabathia warned before he ever takes the mound. Now if only Blanton would lob one up into the TV booth.

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-For the record, my question of John Harbaugh at the end of yesterday’s press conference (regarding Greg Mattison) was NOT asked to be an ass-or to put the coach “on the spot.” It was asked because one of the biggest storylines of the last 10 days has been Greg Mattison-with half of the city of Baltimore calling for Mattison’s head. I NEVER want to bring attention to myself during a press conference, I am just there doing a job. I needed a statement on the record from the Head Coach regarding his embattled Defensive Coordinator; and when challenged-I needed to make sure the Head Coach knew I was not going to let him belittle a relevant question. Please stop with your conspiracy “you just hate John Harbaugh” crap. I am a Ravens fan. I care about one thing, and one thing only. I want the Ravens to win. Other than that, I have a job to do as the Ravens analyst here at WNST.net.

Talk to you later today from 1 Winning Drive.

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 25 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

Ravens 28, Browns 13

I might be giving the Browns too much credit.

Maryland 30, Rutgers 27

Facing a more methodical offense will help the Terps, even if they are a BCS opponent. Their QB issues will help the Terps even more.

Navy 37, Western Kentucky 17

The Midshipmen should put together a much more complete performance against a bad Sun Belt team.

Towson 21, Morgan State 14

This should be a really good game.

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 11 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

Here are my picks for the weekend:

Ravens 24, Chiefs 7

They’re just better. But not 30+ points a game offensively.

Maryland 20, James Madison 6

Madison brings in two new quarterbacks, which makes me think they’ll struggle offensively.

Navy 34, Louisiana Tech 24

This should be fun for the Mids, at least early on

Akron 44, Morgan State 13

It might not be that close. Not that the Zips are particularly good.

Perry Hall 16, Overlea 12

The Gators can’t open 0-2, can they?

Posted on 31 August 2009 by Glenn Clark

I was really impressed by Brian Matusz yesterday (and was actually out at OPACY to see him pitch live! Take THAT Melewski!), and have said all along that I truly believe he could turn out to be a very good pitcher at some point in his career. Even here in Baltimore!

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 26 August 2009 by Glenn Clark

The “Matt Stover factor” is overrated. The Ravens are committed to having one of these guys kick against the Chiefs on September 13.

Matt Stover might well end up kicking again later this season. But it will come only if the Hauschka-Gano winner (likely Hauschka at this point) gets hurt or proves incapable of kicking.

Talk to you tomorrow.

A Purist’s Delight

Posted on 25 August 2009 by dansoderberg

If you haven’t watched any of the Little League World Series please start tomorrow.  The games are extremely entertaining, like today’s Canada vs. Germany matchup that featured Germany overcoming a 10 run deficit only to lose in extra innings.  I didn’t know Brian Burres was a German pre-teen.  There is also the story of the team from Washington that takes infield practice using oven mitts.  The kids in the LLWS are filled with unbridled joy which is infectious to the viewer.  The best part of the coverage is no mention of PEDs, unless I’m seriously underestimating the power of Sour Patch Kids.  If you haven’t watched yet, start.

Yesterday I mentioned that the Orioles would be sending Josh Bell to the Arizona Fall League.  Today it was announced that Brandon Snyder, Brandon Erbe and Frederick 3B Brandon Waring would join Bell on the Phoenix Desert Dogs.  Waring is an intriguing power prospect who was acquired from the Reds in the Ramon Hernandez deal.  Erbe will get the chance to make up some of the innings he lost due to an early season DL stint for elbow fatigue.  With the promotion of Tillman and Matusz to the O’s Erbe ranks behind only Jake Arietta in terms of minor league pitching prospects.
