Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 02 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because Stephen Curry threw a pretty ridiculous half court alley-oop to Dorell Wright last night in Oakland…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says ‘rivalry week’ atmosphere setting in for Ravens at 1 Winning Drive

In fact, I heard that instead of giving away purple towels Sunday night, the crowd at M&T Bank Stadium will be handed t-shirts that read “Duck Fuke.”

Oh, me…

This really is the most exciting game of the year, there’s simply no other way to say it. You can tell from the moment you walk into the building that there is a different excitement and electricity to the week.

It’s palpable.

There isn’t quite the “hurry up and get past it” feel to this week that there was last week leading up to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, or the week before to the Carolina Panthers game.

This week there’s a “hurry up and get there, then please don’t end” feeling.

It won’t be this exciting again until January.

At least…we hope.

2. CSNBaltimore.com’s Joe Platania says Le’Ron McClain only Ravens player not practicing Wednesday

Which is a measure of good news for the Ravens considering all of the named on their injury report.

Dawan Landry was limited, but the rest of the guys were full participants. It would lead you to believe that McClain is the only player in SERIOUS jeopardy of missing Sunday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Of course, if Michael Oher is suddenly missing from practice TODAY-whatever good news came yesterday gets IMMEDIATELY thrown out the window.

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Terrell Suggs named AFC Defensive Player of the Month

Well deserved.

What honor comes from winning Player of the Month? THIS picture of Sandra Valencia. (Thanks Brosome via Busted Coverage!)

valencia

4. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says John Harbaugh dismissed Hines Ward handshake complaints

He handled the question better than I would have. My response would have been “Are you effing serious?”

It probably wouldn’t have been “effing.”

A few things before we move on from the Ravens…

-We’ll be back out in Owings Mills today as the Ravens return to practice. Coordinators Cam Cameron, Greg Mattison and Jerry Rosburg. Make sure you’re tuned in to AM1570 WNST throughout the day, checking back here at WNST.net and following us on Twitter (@WNST).

-Did you miss NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora this morning with Drew Forrester on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault today here at WNST.net to check it out. Some other things you can hear in the Audio Vault include…

 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Thursday
 • Mike DeCourcy (Sporting News)-who talked early season college basketball with Drew Thursday
 • Our weekly Morning Reaction “Cheap Shots From the Bleachers”-as Drew took a shot at “competition” and Glenn Clark took a shot at the Cleveland Cavaliers/Miami Heat buildup
 • Ralph Friedgen (ACC Coach of the Year)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for “The Terrapins Coaches’ Report”
 • Dave Miller (National Football Post)-who went around College Football with Thyrl Wednesday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”
 • Barry Barnes (Fanhouse)-who previewed Ravens/Steelers with Rex Snider Wednesday on “The Afternoon Drive”
 • Jamey Eisenberg (CBSSports.com)-who talked Fantasy Football with Rex Wednesday
 • All sorts of audio from Owings Mills Wednesday; including Harbaugh, Suggs, Ray Lewis, Ray Rice, Joe Flacco, Jarret Johnson and Haloti Ngata

It’s all in the Audio Vault…so…ENJOY! Thank me later.

5. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Orioles make offer to 1B Paul Konerko

And you guys HAVE to feel silly, because I already printed my World Series tickets back when they signed Mitch Atkins. You’re probably going to miss out.

The immediate rumors are that Paul Konerko is probably going to pull a Paul Konerko here. The O’s will offer him a bunch of money and he’ll say “thanks but no thanks.” The word is that because he lives in Arizona, he wants to play for a team that does (at least) Spring Training there.

My suggestion? The Orioles move Spring Training to Tempe. It would at least make me happy. Isn’t that what matters?

If Konerko turns down the money, the Orioles still have to go get SOMEONE. I’m not sure if they’re aware, but Adam Dunn is available. I haven’t heard about them offering him a contract, which is surprising-because he’s pretty good.

Someone should let them know.

6. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Birds could choose not to tender contract offer to Matt Albers

No matter what happens, Matt Albers HAS to return to Charm City. His fake Twitter account is amongst the best in town.

Of course, if Albers leaves town, the Orioles will need some bullpen help.

7. The AP’s Genaro C. Armas says Jordan Williams posted double double as Maryland won at Penn State

The Nittany Lions are SO bad I actually almost felt bad for Talor Battle for a second.

Empty arena in Happy Valley. Teammates that didn’t bother to come back out for the second half.

Wow.

This takes nothing away from what Gary Williams’ Terrapins did last night, as the Terps recovered from a terrible first five minutes to dispatch PSU easily.

It was absolutely what we expected them to do, but it was important that they did it.

The Terps return to action Sunday night when they face Temple at the Verizon Center in the BB&T Classic.

8. The AP says Isaiah Philmore’s buzzer beater lifted Towson past Western Michigan at Towson Center

For the first time in my life, I left the Towson Center last night saying to myself…

“What I just saw was really special.”

(Edit from GMC: No offense to 3 Doors Down, FUEL and Oleander-who put on a hell of a show at the Towson Center when I was in 12th grade. But this was better.)

Troy Franklin and Braxton Dupree did a hell of a job in leading the Tigers back from down 15 in the 2nd half, but it was the John Carroll product who delivered the dagger…

9. ESPN.com says San Diego State will be Navy’s opponent in Poinsettia Bowl

If I was Ken Niumatalolo, I probably wouldn’t care too much who my Midshipmen were playing…mostly because I’d be in SAN FREAKING DIEGO.

Other things I don’t care too much about? Anything to do with Jessica Burciaga that ISN’T this picture. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)…

burciaga

10. The Sun’s Katherine Dunn previews weekend High School Football championship games

And tonight’s first title game is Franklin-Wilde Lake (7pm, M&T Bank Stadium live on WNUV 54.)

I’ll go 26-16 Indians.

I know this much…North Harford isn’t there. That’s all that matters.

And finally, I leave you with this.

Here are my picks to win this year’s significant Grammy Awards (the nominations came out last night).

Album of the Year….Eminem “Recovery”

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 01 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because it’s time to name two new “Greatest Song(s) of All Time This Week.”

I’ll start with the Retro Version. The retro version is in honor of tonight’s start of Hanukkah. My personal favorite (half) Jew is the great Lenny Kravitz, so here’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” If you’ve seen Lenny recently, please tell him to come back. He was freaking AMAZING.

The NEW version of TGSOATTW is a song heard prominently on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST. I hope that tonight’s Grammy Awards nomination announcement features the band Ra Ra Riot. “Shadow Casting” is quite good…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Ryan Chell says Ravens waived S Ken Hamlin, signed FB Jason McKie

As I reported yesterday, the Ravens also tried out former Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans TE/FB Joel Gamble before going with McKie. I was told they made the decision because they felt McKie was more of a natural fullback while Gamble was more of a hybrid. Gamble is a Baltimore native (and Carver grad).

As far as McKie is concerned, I can’t imagine him being asked to do much more than block-but they’ll definitely need him to block. The likelihood is that Le’Ron McClain’s ankle will probably keep him out Sunday night, and the Ravens’ current roster options just aren’t particularly good. Dennis Pitta can help and Jalen Parmele could see the field; but in a game where running the ball will be important-the Ravens will need a true blocking back.

Don’t rule out Hamlin returning to Charm City at some point this season. He was cut once (to make room for Prince Miller humorously enough) but returned in favor of Trevor Pryce. The Ravens like the veteran presence that Hamlin gives them-but he hasn’t even been active much in recent weeks.

2. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Ravens not concerned about outcry regarding towel giveaway

During our “Cheap Shots From the Bleachers” segment before last year’s Ravens-Steelers game at M&T Bank Stadium, I really used up all of the venom I have on this subject.

OF COURSE it’s shameful that the Ravens are giving away towels the night of a Ravens-Steelers game.

OF COURSE it’s embarrassing to hardcore Baltimore football fans to see their own team use a “copycat” version of a rival tradition.

OF COURSE fans should chose NOT to waive the towels but instead to use their hands to clap, bang thundersticks, or otherwise make noise.

OF COURSE the Ravens should really know better in this entire situation.

Unfortunately, they’re still going to give the stupid towel away Sunday night even though there is no one excited about it.

Hey-it makes a nice dish rag. If they were giving them away on the way out-I’d be okay with it. And even ol’ Forrester thinks it makes a nice wall flag…

df

3. The AP’s Alan Robinson says Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger wearing protective boot, expected to play Sunday vs. Ravens

OF COURSE Ben Roethlisberger is going to play Sunday.

(I’ve said “OF COURSE” a lot today. Annoying anyone?)

Of course, if Sabrina Maree lived in the Steel City (or here in Baltimore); I’m not so sure Big Ben wouldn’t be too distracted to make it to the game Sunday night. (Thanks The Beer Goggler via Busted Coverage!)

sabrinamaree

4. ESPN.com drops Ravens to 4th in power rankings

Calm down. The only three teams ahead of the Ravens are the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots and New York Jets; who are all 9-2. The Ravens are first amongst the 8-3 teams.

Before we move on from the Ravens, a few things…

-I’m all for the idea of a “No Means No” chant Sunday night. I think it has to start during TV timeouts right before the Steelers take the ball. If this happens, I will seriously OWE the city of Baltimore for being so freaking awesome.

-The Ravens return to the practice field at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills today. We’ll of course be out there to cover everything happening on and off the practice field. Make sure you remain tuned in to AM1570 WNST, checking out WNST.net and following us on Twitter (@WNST).

5. The Sun’s Dan Connolly says chances of Cesar Izturis returning to Orioles continue to improve

With no offense to Cesar Izturis, umm……..I’d rather not.

Connolly says Jason Bartlett will be dealt by the Tampa Bay Rays, but not to Baltimore. Miguel Tejada is headed to the San Francisco Giants, who lost Juan Uribe to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It could still be an option for the Minnesota Twins to deal JJ Hardy, but they’re not guaranteed to sign Tsuyoshi Nishioka or not move him to second base.

If all else fails, why not Maggi Caruthers?!?!? (Thanks Guyism!)

caruthers

6. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Ralph Friedgen named ACC Coach of the Year, QB Danny O’Brien named Rookie of the Year

Both of these were sort of “no brainer” types of decisions.

The only other real options for Coach of the Year were Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher and Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer. As the Seminoles did basically what everyone expected them to do and the Hokies only started playing well after losing to Boise State and James Madison; it would have been hard to justify either being honored ahead of Friedgen.

And I’m not sure I have many more words to scribe regarding O’Brien. Maybe it’s best the Terrapins DIDN’T make it to Charlotte to play in the ACC Championship Game. I’m not sure what else I could have said about him.

He’s like Matt Wieters. You know, expect…he’s actually done something.

7. UMTerps.com previews tonight’s tilt with Penn State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

I’ll say Terrapins 77, Nittany Lions 69.

I think it will be close for a while though, and I don’t doubt that Talor Battle will get his.

But there would be no excuse for Maryland to not roll up to State College and dominate inside with Jordan Williams. That should absolutely be the difference maker.

SHOULD be I say.

8. The AP says Justin Fry’s 16 points not enough as UMBC fell at Penn

Randy Monroe’s Retrievers MIGHT be better than last year; but it hasn’t resulted in a win yet.

And with a trip to UConn coming Friday night-I’m not sure a win is coming soon either.

Towson is in action tonight, the Tigers host Western Michigan at the Towson Center at 7pm.

9. The AP says Michael Harper scored 19 points to lead Coppin State past Lincoln (Pennsylvania) at CSPEC

Now they gear up for not only an early season MEAC showdown; but the ultimate rivalry game-as they visit Hill Field House for a date with the Morgan State Bears Saturday at 4pm.

But to celebrate the Eagles’ win, I offer a picture of Dani Thompson. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

danithompson

10. The Sun’s Hanah Cho says Maryland officials maintain they will work to protect Preakness as future of horse racing in jeopardy

Did you miss Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association President Richard Hoffberger Wednesday morning with Drew Forrester on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today to check it out! Other things you’ll find in the Audio Vault include…

 • Mike Bires (Beaver County Times)-who talked Steelers with Drew Wednesday
 • Rich Dubroff (Carroll County Times)-who talked Ravens with Drew Wednesday
 • Paul Cantabene (Mustangs Lacrosse Coach)-who joined Drew Wednesday for “The Stevenson Coaches’ Report”
 • A Birds starting pitchers game (courtesy of Sporcle.com) Drew and Glenn Clark (I know him) played Wednesday morning, as well as a call from “Steve M from Kingsville.”
 • Keith Booth (Maryland assistant coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Tuesday for “The Terrapins Coaches’ Report”
 • Scott Smith (Strikeforce Fighter)-who joined Thyrl and John Rallo Tuesday during “The MMA Report”
 • Gregg Doyel (CBSSports.com)-who went around the sports world with Thyrl Tuesday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”
 • Allen McCallum (WNST MLB Analyst)-who joined Rex Snider Tuesday for “The MLB Report”
 • Gabrielle Dow (Ravens VP of Marketing)-who joined Nestor Aparicio Tuesday on “The Afternoon Drive” to discuss the towel fiasco
 • John Czarnecki (FoxSports.com)-who went around the NFL Tuesday with Nestor

And finally, I leave you with this.

So apparently the North Carolina A&T band plays a version of the Antoine Dodson “Bed Intruder” song. Awesome. Thanks WNST intern Barry Kamen courtesy of Ryan Chell’s Facebook page…

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 November 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because I (like every Wednesday), can add two songs to the “Greatest Song of All Time This Week” category.

The new honor goes to Dave Matthews Band, who KILLED “Squirm” when I saw them in Charlottesville last Friday. As I’ve said before, there was a time when I didn’t think “Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King” was deserving of the Album of the Year nod it was given by the Grammy Awards. I was TOTALLY wrong…

And TGSOATTW “Retro” version is a nod to the “family” event that is Thanksgiving. Here’s “Dance to the Music” by Sly & The Family Stone…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Michael Oher, Le’Ron McClain, Haloti Ngata leading Pro Bowl voting at respective positions

Of this group, only McClain and Ngata have REALLY been the best players at their position in the AFC this season. Lewis has played at a Pro Bowl level but is leading in votes by reputation. Ed Reed has barely played but also has a reputation. Oher has had an up and down season, but there was a movie made about him.

Duffy points out that other Ravens are deserving of consideration for a trip to Hawaii. Joe Flacco, Anquan Boldin, Ray Rice and Billy Cundiff are certainly deserving of being in the conversation, Terrell Suggs might be as well.

The good news (for people who care about this type of thing) is that the reputation of the organization alone will get more players to the Pro Bowl.

I don’t necessarily care much about which players make the Pro Bowl, unless a deserving player comes up short (like was the case with Jarret Johnson a year ago). Only Ngata and McClain really look like “must” Pro Bowlers this season, so I don’t think I’ll be disappointed when the teams are announced.

2. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens signed former Kansas City Chiefs OL Colin Brown to practice squad

Unreal.

You mean to tell me there was an open spot on the Ravens’ practice squad (after they promoted Bryan Mattison and released Scott Kooistra) and yet they DIDN’T sign Emanuela de Paula? RIDICULOUS! (Thanks Guyism!)

depaula

3. ESPN.com has Ravens 3rd in power rankings

And at 3rd, the Ravens are ahead of every other 7-3 team and even the 8-2 New York Jets. Just keep that in mind.

Before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-We’ll be out at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills today as the Ravens return to practice. We’re expecting to hear from John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis and more around noon. Make sure you’re tuned in to AM1570 WNST, following us on Twitter @WNST and checking out WNST.net throughout the day!

-Did you miss Ravens Director of Player Personnel Eric Decosta with Drew Forrester Wednesday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault today to check it out. Some other things you can hear in the Audio Vault today include…

 • Johnny Holliday (Legendary Terps PBP Voice)-who talked Terrapins football and basketball with Drew Wednesday
 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Wednesday
 • Joe Beninati (Washington Capitals Play by Play-Comcast SportsNet)-who talked puck with Drew Wednesday
 • Our Morning Reaction “Cheap Shots from the Bleachers”, as Drew resorted to BEGGING for the Orioles to get better players, and I got soft as I reflected on the community at Thanksgiving
 • Postgame audio from Maryland’s win over Delaware State Tuesday night, including Gary Williams, Cliff Tucker, Adrian Bowie and Dino Gregory
 • Jamey Eisenberg (CBSSports.com)-who talked Fantasy Football with Rex Snider Tuesday on “The Afternoon Drive”
 • Jorge Ortiz (USA Today) and Craig Calcaterra (“HardballTalk”-NBCSports.com)-who joined Allen McCallum and Rex Tuesday on “The MLB Report”
 • Andrew Perloff (Sports Illustrated)-who went around the AFC with Rex Wednesday
 • John Rallo (Shogun Fights)-who joined Thyrl Nelson for “The MMA Report” Tuesday

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so I’d get over there…like…ASAP…to check it all out. You’ve got a long weekend ahead. ENJOY!

4. WNST.net’s Ryan Chell says Orioles add bench coach Willie Randolph to staff

There’s a natural “I’ve heard of this guy so I’m excited about him” mentality that comes with hiring a former MLB manager for a coaching position.

My gut says that Willie Randolph will be a nice addition to Buck Showalter’s staff. That being said, we don’t really have any tangible reason to expect that Willie Randolph will make any sort of significant difference in Charm City.

Unless of course he could play first base and hit 40 home runs.

Of course, the Orioles were looking at Victor Martinez to do those things, right? Ummm…..

5. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Victor Martinez passed on O’s offer, signed with Detroit Tigers

Argh.

As I said this morning, I’m not going to give Andy MacPhail a pass here. If everything we’ve been told is true (the O’s offered 48 million and Martinez accepted 50 million in Motown without giving the O’s the chance to counter), I hope MacPhail learned a lesson.

That lesson is that no player REALLY cares about the team’s late season growth under Showalter and their decent young nucleus.

REAL players want to win and want to make money.

Simply competitive offers won’t get it done. The team is going to have to OVERPAY.

The Tigers themselves had to do it to get Magglio Ordonez and Ivan Rodriguez a few years back. It didn’t seem like smart business at the time, but it eventually helped the Tigers reach the World Series.

They knew what they had to do to get players. Andy MacPhail and the Orioles will have to do the same thing this year.

6. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Birds chose not to offer arbitration to Koji Uehara, Kevin Millwood

Obviously Millwood was never coming back, but I don’t know what to make of the Koji decision.

The good news here? With one (or both) of these guys gone, maybe the team can consider F.P. Santangelo…..’s future wife Michelle McLaughlin. (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

santangelo

7. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Cliff Tucker lead way with 15 points as Maryland topped Delaware State at Comcast Center

A lot of folks were upset that last night’s tilt with the Hornets wasn’t available on TV.

Don’t be upset. You didn’t miss a DAMN thing.

This one was never pretty, and seemed downright strange in the second half. DSU actually outscored the Terps 33-32 after halftime, but that was mostly because Gary Williams decided to play with some strange lineup combos, including one stretch where he had nothing but reserves on the floor.

Berend Weijs had a nice night last night. I don’t think Berend Weijs is REALLY an ACC player however. Then again, I didn’t think Dave Neal was an ACC player either.

Maryland returns to action Friday night against Elon, Luke Jones will host a “Turtle Power” live chat during the game.

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Terrapins OL Pete DeSouza hoping to return from accident in time for spring practice

This would be a very cool story if it were to play out that way. There was a thought that DeSouza’s football future wasn’t guaranteed in ANY way when he suffered the accident.

Should he return in the spring, it could provide a MAJOR lift to the entire program.

9. The AP says Aric Brooks scored 17 points to lead Morgan State past Western Illinois in Cancun

Kudos to Todd Bozeman and the Bears. If I was in Cancun, I’m not sure how focused I would be on the task at hand. Then again, the “Palace Arena” might help to humble me…

arena

A ballroom. An effing ballroom. Unbelievable. Eh…you’re still in Cancun.

10. The AP says Michael Harper lead way with 21 points as Coppin State topped UMBC as CSPEC

A couple of games today featuring local teams. Morgan plays a second game in as many days at the Cancun Challenge, as they face North Florida. Towson hosts Navy tonight at the Towson Center-that game tips at 7. Loyola visits Mike Lonergan and Vermont, that game tips at 7 as well.

And if all of that isn’t enough, here’s a picture of Monica Leigh, too! (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

monicaleigh

And finally, I leave you with this.

The Miz won the WWE Championship?!?!? AWE.SOME.!!!!!!!!!!!

Honorable Mention-NHL: Washington Capitals @ Carolina Hurricanes (Wednesday 7pm from Raleigh live on Comcast SportsNet), Tampa Bay Lightning @ Washington Capitals (Friday 5pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Carolina Hurricanes @ Washington Capitals (Sunday 5pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet & NHL Network)

10. Ozzy Osbourne (Monday 7:30pm 1st Mariner Arena); Charm City Devils (Friday 7pm Rams Head Live), Jah Works (Saturday 8pm Rams Head Live); Crack The Sky (Saturday 8pm Recher Theatre); Citizen Cope (Tuesday & Wednesday 7:30pm Birchmere, Friday 8:30pm, Saturday 1:30pm & 8:30pm Rams Head On Stage); Carbon Leaf (Wednesday 6pm 9:30 Club), Donovan Frankenreiter (Thursday 8pm 9:30 Club), Cyndi Lauper (Saturday 6pm 9:30 Club), KT Tunstall (Saturday 10pm 9:30 Club), Brandon Flowers (Monday 7pm 9:30 Club); Shelby Lynne (Monday 7:30pm Birchmere); Lisa Lampanelli (Saturday 7pm Warner Theatre); Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday); Inception“, “Despicable Me” and “Shrek Forever After” available on DVD/Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

I have an attorney friend (I should probably have more of those) who has an extra ticket to see Ozzy Monday. She’s quizzing her friends about Ozzy to see who will get the ticket. The first question is one of those “just don’t answer this the wrong way” questions. It is: “What is your favorite Ozzy song?” Rumor has it there’s someone who actually DIDN’T answer “War Pigs.” Fine by me, I’m a step closer to having a ticket!

No SR-71 Thanksgiving show this year, but I’d be MORE than happy to see CCD instead. I’m digging “Best of the Worst”…

Citizen Cope could do just about ANYTHING and I’d be in. But if I was headed to Annapolis to see him-I’d be hoping for “Pablo Picasso”…

There are a lot of rumors that this will be one of the better disc’s in Kanye’s career. I’ll admit that “Devil In A New Dress” makes me hopeful…

9. Glenn Clark’s Thanksgiving Plans (Wednesday-Saturday)

And seriously-I think I’ve got a win.

On Wednesday, I’ll appease a roommate and we’ll watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Calling it a classic doesn’t really do it justice. (Clip VERY NSFW!)

Thursday night is easy. Pumpkin Pie, white wine and Home Alone. It is what it is…

And after everything calms down Saturday, my favorite part of Turkey Day begins. You know, the part where I slab turkey, mashed potatoes and BBQ sauce on bread and forget the words “calorie intake” mean anything.

tgiving

8. Soccer-World Cup Qualifying (Women’s): Italy @ Team USA (Saturday 2pm from Bridgeview, IL live on ESPN3.com), College Soccer-NCAA Tournament: Penn State @ Maryland (Sunday 4pm Ludwig Field)

I’m so TORN here!

We all know I love the red, white & blue. And since the greatest American women’s soccer moment involved stripping, I PARTICULARLY love American women’s soccer.

But this is Italy we’re talking about. The land of my forefathers. The land that taught me that talking with my hands is as important as talking with my lips, and that my lips are more made for kissing.

It’s also the land that gave us “The Situation”! How can we root against them?!?!?

7. Table Tennis: JOOLA North American Tennis Championships (Friday-Sunday Baltimore Convention Center)

I was going to simply say “I’m picking Forrest Gump” and leave it at that, but apparently the former Alabama KR is not playing this year. I’m just as surprised as you.

Seriously-I love playing ping-pong, but these people are freaking NUTS.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?!? WOW!

6. Tennis: Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (Tuesday-Saturday 1pm, Sunday 3pm from London live on Tennis Channel)

FINALLY! Some eye candy for the blog!!!!!!

andyroddick

Maybe not all of you are as big of Andy Roddick fans as I am, but…ummm…deal with it.

5. NBA: Philadelphia 76ers @ Washington Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ Atlanta Hawks (Thursday 8pm from Atlanta live on TNT), Orlando Magic @ Washington Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet & NBA TV), Washington Wizards @ Miami Heat (Monday 7:30pm from Miami live on Comcast SportsNet)

I haven’t been following basketball in a while, do we still hate the Heat because of LeBron James?

Sorry, I just don’t pay as much attention as I probably should.

Oh and also…do you think Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp will finally get the Seattle Supersonics past the Chicago Bulls this year? That’s a hell of a combo they’ve got there in the Emerald City…

4. College Football: North Carolina State @ Maryland (Saturday 3:30pm from Byrd Stadium live on ESPN2)

Yes, the ACC Championship Game is out of the picture. But beating the Wolfpack Saturday might very well be the difference in the Terps going to a bowl game in Nashville or Charlotte instead of ending up in a bowl game at RFK Stadium.

Let’s think about that a bit. Music City gave us Kings of Leon…

The Queen City gave us Anthony Hamilton…

And DC gave us…ummm….Rod Strickland?

3. College Basketball: Delaware State @ Maryland (Tuesday 8pm Comcast Center), Elon @ Maryland (Friday 8pm from Comcast Center live on Comcast SportsNet); UMBC @ Coppin State (Wednesday 7:30pm Coppin State Physical Education Complex); Loyola @ Morgan State (Monday 7pm Hill Field House); Navy @ Towson (Wednesday 7pm Towson Center)

I hate it when local teams play against each other. I mean, how do I pick between Randy Monroe’s Retrievers or Fang Mitchell’s Eagles? And how do I pick between Jimmy Patsos’ Greyhounds or Todd Bozeman’s Bears?

It’s like trying to pick what Thanksgiving dessert I enjoy more:
spp
pumpkinpie
pecanpie

You know what? I’m not picking. Good luck to ALL of the local teams this week, and please bring me one of each type of pie. MMM….pie….

2. High School Football-MPSSAA Playoffs: Broadneck @ Henry A. Wise (Saturday 1pm), Urbana @ Gaithersburg (Friday 7pm), Wilde Lake @ Damascus (Friday 7pm), Huntingtown @ Franklin (Friday 7pm), Eastern Tech @ Middletown (Friday 7pm), McDonough @ Queen Anne’s (Friday 7pm), Fort Hill @ Dunbar (Saturday 1pm Poly High School), Brunswick @ Havre de Grace (Friday 7pm); Turkey Bowl: Calvert Hall vs. Loyola Blakefield (Thursday 10am from M&T Bank Stadium live on ABC2)

Here’s what Thursday’s annual showdown between the Cardinals and Dons means to those of us in Baltimore with no MIAA ties.

You see, when you’re growing up-Calvert Hall/Loyola is simply the game you flip over to for a minute after Santa Claus strolls through New York in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

After you turn 21 and discover the “true” meaning of Thanksgiving Eve, Calvert Hall/Loyola becomes a game you can’t POSSIBLY wake up early enough to watch before stuffing your face with enough food to make you forget about your hangover.

As a side note, let’s go Franklin Indians again Friday night. You knock Ken Brinkman and North Harford High School out of the playoffs, you get EVERY ounce of support possible from me.

Up yours, Brinkman.

1. NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Baltimore Ravens (Sunday 4:15pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on FOX); New England Patriots @ Detroit Lions (Thursday 12:30pm from Detroit live on CBS), New Orleans Saints @ Dallas Cowboys (Thursday 4:15pm from Arlington, TX live on FOX), Cincinnati Bengals @ New York Jets (Thursday 8:20pm from East Rutherford, NJ live on NFL Network)

As we gather around televisions Thursday to enjoy the annual celebration that is watching the Lions get their asses kicked, I’d like to take some time to remember the true meaning of the day.

It is important that we give thanks for the many wonderful things that have happened this year.

For example, let’s give thanks that Frank Walker now plays for the Minnesota Vikings.

And let’s give thanks that the McRib is back. It’s not my thing anymore, but I really do get it.

And finally, let’s give thanks that Amanda Harrington forgot to grab a bra before snapping this picture. (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 November 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because A-I haven’t gone all Vincent Van Gogh yet and cut off my ear despite the intense pain.

And B-It’s time to name a few “Greatest Song(s) of All Time This Week.” First is the “new” version of the honor, which you’ll probably make fun of me for. There’s no reason for me to like the song “What’s My Name?” by Rihanna and Drake, but damnit-I really do…

As far as my “retro” version of TGSOATTW is concerned, I offer an ode to two things. One, the Black Crowes are at Rams Head Live tonight. Two, with the Baltimore Ravens headed to Atlanta to face the Falcons this week, I remind everyone that the Black Crowes are (along with Outkast) amongst the most significant musical contributions we’ve received from the A-T-L. Hard to believe their version of “Hard to Handle” is over 20 years old…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens want improved red zone offense for trip to Georgia Dome

As I’ve stressed, there is no simple solution here.

The best Red Zone scoring team in the NFL is the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions just so happen to have a 6’5″ star receiver (Calvin Johnson) who has grabbed 8 touchdowns already this season. (They’ve also made a few less trips to the red zone than the Ravens, who are 24th in the league in finding paydirt from inside their opponents’ 20.)

The Ravens just don’t have a 6’5″ star receiver they can lob the ball up towards in the red zone.

This is actually fairly scientific. When you enter the red zone, the field shrinks vertically. There isn’t as much space to find receivers, defenders have less space to cover.

Therefore, teams have to find space in other ways. The best way to do that is to find space ABOVE the ground. That’s where receivers like Calvin Johnson (and Larry Fitzgerald…and Andre Johnson…and Vincent Jackson, etc.) make such a significant difference.

Todd Heap is 6’5″, but just really doesn’t leap like he did at one point in his career. TJ Houshmandzadeh is 6’2″, but plays more like he’s 5’11″. Anquan Boldin is 6’1″ and Derrick Mason is 5’10″.

Without that jump ball threat, it won’t be so easy for the Ravens to improve their numbers in the red zone. Ed Dickson (6’4″) could be the wild card, but he has to continue to earn the trust of John Harbaugh and Cam Cameron just to be on the field.

I don’t expect the Ravens to have another one touchdown in seven trips performance as they did Sunday, but I don’t know that there is a simple solution either.

Of course-limiting penalties would certainly help.

2. WNST.net’s Chris Pika says Ravens-Falcons could be ‘Super Bowl XLV preview’

If I’m a betting man, I’d bet AGAINST this happening.

That being said, both teams are tied for the best record in their respective conferences, and have the one factor that is most necessary to win in the NFL this season…balance.

You can’t help but notice the similarities between Harbaugh and QB Joe Flacco to the Falcons’ Mike Smith and Matt Ryan. You can’t help but notice how the teams have running backs that are similar in style in Ray Rice and Michael Turner.

They’re both really good teams who I have no doubt will be playing in the postseason. But if I was a betting man, my money would say they don’t face off again in Arlington to finish the season.

3. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ray Rice admitted he made ‘bad decision’ in taking to Twitter after being pulled over

Thank God Twitter didn’t exist when I was in college. Can you even IMAGINE how many dumb things I’d say? I said enough dumb things on MySpace and Facebook over the years, so I’m just grateful I didn’t have Twitter to worry about as well.

Clearly Ray Rice should have never mentioned that he got a break from an officer and gave him an autograph no matter what the circumstances were. That being said, this is really not a big deal at all. Rice has been a model citizen during his short NFL career, and as long as he gets his window tinting taken care of, he’ll be abiding by all rules again.

This is just a quick lesson in not needing to pass EVERYTHING along via Twitter. A lesson we probably all need to learn at some point.

4. CSNBaltimore.com’s John Eisenberg says Josh Wilson could be in line to start Thursday night

At this point, Greg Mattison and the Ravens don’t have much of a choice but to start Wilson over Fabian Washington at this point.

That being said, I have to wonder if they’ve considered all options. For example, was Nicole Craner considered? (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

craner

5. ESPN.com elevates Ravens to 1st in power rankings

And before we move on from the Ravens, a few things…

-The Ravens are back at work at 1 Winning Drive today, but today’s walkthrough is CLOSED to the media before they depart at 2:30 for “Hotlanta.” We’re not departing just yet, so we’ll still have Ravens Reports throughout the day on AM1570 WNST.

-Did you miss Ravens DE Paul Kruger with Drew Forrester Wednesday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault today at WNST.net to check it out! Other things you can hear in the Audio Vault include…

 • Andrew Brandt (National Football Post/Former Green Bay Packers Executive)-who went around the NFL with Drew Wednesday
 • Steve Gorman (Black Crowes Drummer/host of “Steve Gorman Sports”)-who talked sports and rock & roll with Drew Wednesday
 • Dave Archer (Falcons Color Analyst/Former QB)-who previewed the Thursday Night Football showdown with Drew Wednesday
 • John Rallo (Shogun Fights III)-who previewed Saturday night’s event at 1st Mariner Arena with Drew Wednesday
 • Plenty of audio from Owings Mills Tuesday, including Harbaugh, Flacco, Rice, Wilson and DT Haloti Ngata
 • Urijah Faber (WEC Fighter)-who joined Rallo and Thyrl Nelson Tuesday on “The MMA Report”
 • Tim Strachan (Maryland Football Analyst)-who previewed Saturday’s showdown with the Cavaliers in Charlottesville on “The Mobtown Sports Beat” with Thyrl Tuesday
 • Chris Knoche (Maryland Basketball Color Analyst)-who talked 2K Sports Classic with Thyrl Tuesday as well
 • Ovie Mughelli (Falcons FB/former Raven)-who joined Rex Snider Tuesday on “The Afternoon Drive” to preview Thursday night’s game
 • Jamey Eisenberg (CBSSports.com)-who talked all things Fantasy Football with Rex Tuesday

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so I’ve somehow managed to plan your day AGAIN. This is getting totally out of hand…

6. MLB.com’s Evan Drellich says Orioles to reduce seating capacity at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, improve sightlines

And if Andy MacPhail and company had come to Glenn Clark and said “how do YOU think we could improve sightlines at OPACY?”, here’s how I would have responded.

“IMPROVE WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT!!!!!!!!! If I had a bad sightline for the Mona Lisa or a good sightline for a piece of cow manure, I’d pick the bad sightline all day.”

Of course, Peter Angelos and company haven’t asked me for an opinion since…well…ever.

(Edit from GMC: For the record, I think this is a good idea. I just want so many things fixed that one good idea doesn’t suddenly leave me completely thrilled.)

7. The Sun’s Dan Connolly says former O’s manager Dave Trembley accepts minor league gig with Atlanta Braves

Good for Dave Trembley, honestly.

I doubt Trembley will ever get back to the managerial level in Major League Baseball, but this should be a good role for him.

And no truth to the rumor that the Braves only hired Trembley after being turned down by New Orleans Saints cheerleader/Louisiana middle school teacher Chastity McLemore. (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

chastity

8. UMTerps.com previews tonight’s tilt with College of Charleston at Comcast Center

Here’s what we know.

While they DID blow out Seattle in their opener Monday night, the Terps were quite sloppy in the victory. Turnovers, missed free throws and failed finishes were all issues against the Redhawks.

The Cougars are going to have familiarity with Gary Williams thanks to Bobby Cremins’ background at Georgia Tech. On top of that, this is a C-of-C team that managed to knock off North Carolina a season ago.

I don’t think the Terps are at risk of losing tonight, but I certainly don’t expect this to be a walkover either.

No matter what, we’ll have the “Turtle Power” chat going tonight at 7pm (the game can be seen on ESPNU with Rob Stone and Jay Williams on the call), Luke Jones (and perhaps Glenn Clark if he can survive his ear infection) will be live from College Park to provide companion analysis.

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Terrapins CB Avery Graham and S Desmond Kearse remain out, TE Dave Stinebaugh has not been ruled out for Saturday’s trip to Virginia

Despite Stinebaugh being a proud Perry Hall High School Gators alum, I will be the first to admit that Stinebaugh is not the difference in winning and losing.

That being said, a team that has dealt with so many injuries at skill positions can certainly use a player like Stinebaugh back on the field.

And speaking on behalf of PHHS grads everywhere-we don’t really have a lot of guys worth rooting for around the world, so we need him on the field too. It just makes all of us look better.

10. Annapolis Capital’s Bill Wagner says Navy QB Ricky Dobbs missed practice Monday and Tuesday with slight concussion

Apparently Midshipmen coach Ken Niumatalolo expects Dobbs to return to practice today, so he shouldn’t really be at risk of missing Saturday’s Central Michigan game.

And while Kriss Proctor would probably do a more than admirable job of filling in for him should he miss the game, I would implore the Mids to make sure they consider all options before settling with Proctor. For example, I think Karol Jaramillo might make a good option as well. (Thanks Guyism!)

jaramillo

And finally, I leave you with this.

Apparently this play from a High School Football game in North Carolina last week lead to a penalty. It should have lead to a penalty for being an effing awesome idea…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 04 November 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because Lil’ Wayne is getting out of prison today (or at worst in the next 36 hours). If you don’t know, I LOVE me some Weezy…

…so much so that it inspired my greatest Halloween costume EVER…

weezy

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ray Lewis disappointed Shawne Merriman won’t be headed to Charm City

That being said, I never REALLY thought Shawne Merriman was coming to Baltimore. We knew John Harbaugh and company weren’t putting in a waiver claim for a guy whose career has been marked by injuries and ineffectiveness in recent years; and I always thought there would be another NFL team that would want “Lights Out” more.

But I NEVER thought it would be the Buffalo Bills.

This is the part where I’m supposed to say, “As far as the Ravens are concerned, they’ll be fine.” Unfortunately, I have no idea if they will or won’t be. They’re 24th in the NFL in sacks right now, and there’s no simple solution for how the number will improve.

But I don’t think Shawne Merriman would have made the difference in-season.

2. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Zbikowski missed practice Wednesday

And everything points to the idea that Zbikowski won’t play again Sunday when the Ravens face the Miami Dolphins at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Ravens will be okay at safety with Ed Reed healthy. The other question is punt return, where there was hope that WR Donte’ Stallworth could step in immediately as he is expected to return from a broken foot Sunday.

However, Stallworth was not on the field during the Special Teams portion of practice Wednesday. That doesn’t mean he still couldn’t be involved, but it makes you think that maybe the team is trying to limit how much he does in his first game back.

Should Stallworth not be an option, the job would presumably be Lardarius Webb’s against the Fins.

3. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Matt Birk a bigger fan of St. Paul restaurant than Randy Moss

Should this really be considered Ravens “news”? Eh…probably not.

But does this particular subject reach home with me.

I mean, this would be like me arranging catering from The Fullerton Pub & The Down Under Restaurant only to have Ryan Chell go off about not liking the food.

My initial thought wouldn’t just be “how dare you?”. My initial thought would really be something along the lines of “what kind of idiot are you? This food is delicious!”

4. CSNBaltimore.com’s John Eisenberg says Joe Flacco gets to gauge himself against fellow ’08 NFL Draft selection Chad Henne

This is actually a very unique couple of weeks. Not only does Flacco get to gauge himself against Henne, but he also gets to gauge himself against Matt Ryan in two weeks at the Georgia Dome.

And it isn’t just the quarterbacks, either.

These two weeks will be a good gauge for the entire team, as everything about the Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons is similar to what the Baltimore Ravens are these days.

They’re balanced. They have young QB’s. They have coaches who are in their 3rd year and have experienced success early in their careers.

And I’m gonna go out a limb here, but I get the feeling they’re also all three teams who enjoy this picture of Melissa Giraldo. (Thanks DJMick via Busted Coverage!)

melissag

5. USA Today’s Jim Corbett says Ozzie Newsome may have put together best O-Line, D-Line combo in NFL

And before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-We’ll be back out at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills today; and we’re expecting to hear from coordinators Cam Cameron, Greg Mattison and Jerry Rosburg. Make sure you’re tuned in to AM1570 WNST and following us on Twitter @WNST throughout the day.

-Did you miss Ravens FB Le’Ron McClain with Drew Forrester Thursday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today to check it out. Some other things you can find in the Audio Vault include…

 • Karl Alzner (Washington Capitals Defenseman)-who talked puck with Drew Thursday morning
 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Thursday
 • David Pollack (Maryland/Miami Color Analyst-ESPNU)-who previewed the showdown between the Terps and ‘Canes with Drew Thursday
 • Plenty of audio from 1 Winning Drive Wednesday-including John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis, Ray Rice and Terrell Suggs
 • Scott Miller (CBSSports.com)-who talked MLB offseason with Rex Snider Wednesday on “The Afternoon Drive”
 • John Czarnecki (FoxSports.com)-who went around the NFL with Rex Wednesday
 • Tom Brattan (Maryland O-Line Coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for “The Terrapins Coaches’ Report”
 • Steve Henson (Yahoo! Sports)-who wrapped up the World Series and talked hot stove with Thyrl Wednesday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”

It’s all there in the Audio Vault, so once again-your day is planned. I can’t believe how good I am to you…

6. The Sun’s Dan Connolly says Orioles will hire Wayne Kirby as 1B/Outfield coach

Is there any chance he could still steal 25 bases for the Birds this season?

Or could his brother (Terry Kirby) could return punts for the Ravens?

Otherwise-I don’t really know how much it means to have Wayne Kirby as 1st base coach. Maybe he’s a GREAT addition, maybe he’s just an addition. It’s hard to really make a statement like that at this point.

It IS kinda cool to have a first base coach whose baseball cards I definitely collected a ton of however.

7. MLB.com’s Bryan McTaggert says O’s could spend more money at 1B in offseason than any other position

Once again-problem pinpointed. Now-can we just find a damn solution already?

Unfortuantely, I don’t think Kassie Lyn Logsdon will be an option-even if she would have been the team’s best bet. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

logsdon

8. ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich says Miami RB Damien Berry will miss Saturday’s game against Maryland

This is starting to get frightening.

How could so many things be going against the Hurricanes going into this game?

Randy Shannon said there’s a 75% chance that Jacory Harris won’t play Saturday, and their top RB is out Saturday as well.

I would STILL remind everyone that Miami has MUCH more talent than Maryland, but this continued good news really makes me think Maryland might actually have a chance.

A chance. Let’s not get carried away.

But if Jacory Harris and Damien Berry were healthy, I’m not certain I would have given them much of a chance at all.

9. LoyolaGreyhounds.com says Jimmy Patsos’ team opens season with exhibition contest vs. Shepherd tonight at Reitz Arena

I dated a girl who went to Shepherd. I know way more about Shepherdstown, West Virginia than I’d ever want to admit. There’s a Clarion Inn there. Don’t ask me any follow up questions to that statement.

For the record, the girl I was dating was NOT Raica Oliveira. If it was, you could ask me as many follow up questions as you wanted. (Thanks Guyism!)

raica

10. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says new facility needed to save horse racing in Maryland

Build a track downtown. Nab the city’s slots license and pair them together. Make it NICE. Sorta like what David Cordish is doing at Arundel Mills…

There’s no reason why this HAS to be the death of horse racing. It just has to be the death of business as usual. That’s tough for a lot of folks to understand…

And finally, I leave you with this.

Am I a nerd if I want to go see Megamind this weekend? It actually looks kinda cool…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 21 October 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because I just bought my tickets to the 12:30pm 25th anniversary screening of “Back to the Future” Saturday in White Marsh.

AWE.SOME.

To celebrate the occasion, here’s “Johnny B. Goode” from Marty McFly & The Starlighters. Playing all your 80′s movie hits, right here on WNST.net…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens split on new NFL head-hunting policy

It’s an interesting dynamic.

Defensive players (like Terrell Suggs) noted that they supported the concept of protecting players, but that they couldn’t afford to alter the way they played the game.

Offensive players (like Willis McGahee) were clearly much more supportive of the idea. Willis joked that he wished Steelers safety Ryan Clark had been given a heavier punishment for his hit in the 2009 AFC Championship Game.

But players on both sides were together in the having only a small level of awkward, uncomfortable support for the strengthening of punishment towards guilty parties.

The real issue is that while players WANT to be protected, they don’t want it to come at a potential monetary cost.

This issue isn’t going away anytime soon. It’s going to be continuously debated until the offseason and the negotiation of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Players don’t want to give ANYTHING up. As Ray Lewis pointed out yesterday, they need to “fight it”, even if they might agree with the theory at heart.

And if you think players are divided on the issue now, wait until the first player is suspended for this type of hit. If it’s Dannell Ellerbe, or Haruki Nakamura, or any of those players-it will be an even bigger issue at 1 Winning Drive.

2. The AP’s David Ginsburg says S Ed Reed returned to practice field in Owings Mills Wednesday

And that is CLEARLY a welcome sight to Ravens fans, there’s just no question about that.

That being said, there really is no guarantee that Ed will be on the field this Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium. My gut says he will-but my gut also says that it could be a more responsible decision for John Harbaugh and company to hold him out and buy themselves two weeks for Ed’s health (and the health of LB Brendon Ayanbadejo-who also returned to practice yesterday) and to make roster decisions.

The one thing that NO ONE can argue with is the fact that the Baltimore Ravens improved yesterday with the return of Ed Reed.

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Tom Zbikowski, Todd Heap missed practice Wednesday

Harbaugh said Zbikowski “has a chance” to play Sunday-he seemed MUCH more upbeat about the likelihood of Heap getting on the field.

If Zbikowski CAN’T play, I don’t think I’d be alone in suggesting that the Ravens consider going with veteran NFL safety Adam Archuleta…..’s wife Jennifer Walcott. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

walcott

4. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Willis McGahee not upset over benching, ‘happy’ he wasn’t traded

Willis maintained that he wasn’t punished. That’s fine. My guess is that the truth is somewhere close to that, but maybe not EXACTLY that.

In the meantime, Willis also made a point that by not going through as much wear and tear behind Ray Rice as he did earlier in his career, he’s adding years to his career. That’s a great attitude to have-I hope he really believes it.

And like I said, I would have been more than willing to trade Willis McGahee. To Dallas. For Cliff Lee.

Short of that, the Ravens ABSOLUTELY did the right thing in holding on to their veteran back.

5. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Buffalo Bills DL Dwan Edwards clarified perceived negative comments about Charm City

A few things before we move on from the Ravens…

-We’ll be back out at 1 Winning Drive today, so make sure you’re following us on Twitter (@WNST), tuned into AM1570 WNST and checking WNST.net for updates. We’re expected to hear from coordinators Cam Cameron, Greg Mattison and Jerry Rosburg.

-Did you miss Ravens punter Sam Koch with Drew Forrester on “The Morning Reaction” Thursday on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault at WNST.net today to check it out. Other things you can hear in the Audio Vault include…

 • Harry Swayne (Ravens Director of Player Development)-who shared his Super Bowl XXXV memories with Drew Thursday before Sunday’s reunion
 • Ed Hottle (Mustangs Football Coach)-who joined Drew Thursday for the Stevenson Coaches’ Report
 • Steve Beuerlein (CBS Color Analyst)-who previewed Ravens/Bills with Drew Thursday
 • Our Morning Reaction “Cheap Shots from the Bleachers”-as I took a shot at the UFL and Drew took a shot at Jen Royle
 • Tons of audio from 1 Winning Drive Wednesday-including Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis, Reed, McGahee, Suggs, Ayanbadejo, Josh Wilson, Haloti Ngata and Derrick Mason
 • Patrick Johnson (Former Ravens WR)-who joined Rex Snider Wednesday on “The Afternoon Drive” to discuss SBXXXV memories
 • Kevin Lempa (Maryland Safeties Coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for “The Terrapins Coaches Report” to preview Saturday’s game against Boston College
 • Duane Starks (Former Ravens CB)-who joined Thyrl Thursday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat” to talk Super Bowl memories
 • Edwin Mulitalo (Former Ravens OL)-who also talked SB memories with Rex Thursday

It’s all in the Audio Vault. I’ve planned your day again. Just say “thank you.”

6. CSNBaltimore.com’s Pete Kerzel says Brian Matusz, Matt Wieters, Nick Markakis, Brian Roberts, Adam Jones should be Orioles’ ‘untouchables’

Eh…I guess. Matusz for sure, Wieters probably…I could understand a scenario in which Andy MacPhail parted with the others.

You know who else is “untouchable” in my mind? Szorcsik Viktoria. (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

viktoria

7. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says Birds won’t get shot at Japanese SS Hiroyuki Nakajima

So instead…GO GET REAL PLAYERS!!!

Jeff of course paints the picture that we’re all afraid of anyway…that this means the Birds will probably bring back Cesar Izturis.

They’ll still have the World Series in October next year, right?

8. The AP says Maryland picked 6th in preseason ACC basketball poll

I feel like this is probably the range where I’d have the Terrapins myself.

I don’t get the feeling they’re going to be a BAD team by any stretch of the imagination. They have plenty of returning talent-starting with Jordan Williams. The question for the guys returning is whether one of Cliff Tucker, Sean Mosley or Adrian Bowie can become a consistent scorer. We’ll have to see.

The other question surrounds trying to get contributions from the newcomers. Mike Parker looks like the guy with the most raw talent, but Ashton Pankey and Terrell Stoglin could be quicker to contribute in their roles.

They’re probably middle of the road-somewhere between 4th and 8th.

6th works.

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Gary Williams won’t allow Terrapins to use Twitter during hoops season

This is really interesting. I’m not surprised given some of the “questionable” Tweets that have been sent out by student athletes in College Park and elsewhere-but it is still interesting.

Apparently North Carolina has already done the same thing-so we’ll have to see how quickly other NCAA teams will adopt a similar policy. My guess is that it won’t take long.

Not every student athlete uses his Twitter account for another opportunity to be stupid. Unfortunately…some do. Enough that this type of policy has to be considered.

10. Washington Post’s Eric Prisbell says Ralph Friedgen believes Terps have no margin for error with penalties

Speaking of penalties, did Russian spy Anna Chapman ever receive any? After seeing her on the cover of Russia’s Maxim, I feel as though if she hasn’t yet-she shouldn’t in the future…

chapman

And finally, I leave you with this.

Boomer Sooner and I are going to get the chance to hang with Darius Rucker before his show tomorrow night at Pier Six Pavilion. My first question for him? PLEASE PLAY “HOLD MY HAND!!!!”….

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 07 October 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because I’m thinking about the Darius Rucker show at Pier Six Pavilion on October 22nd, and just happened to find this gem as I was doing so…

As I already explained to Boomer Sooner, if Rucker does Purple Rain on the 22nd-I cannot be held responsible for my actions.

By the way, I’ve been posting a ton of stuff on Facebook this week (you can add me as a friend by searching “Glenn Clark” and adding the best looking guy you find). I’ve been adding a bunch of stuff to my iPod, so I’ve been sharing some of the things I find…like this surreal combo between Soulive and Robert Randolph…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens believe Denver Broncos atop NFL in passing offense thanks in part to YAC, missed tackles

This probably isn’t the case with Demaryius Thomas; but it certainly is the case with Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney and Eddie Royal. If the Ravens are going to keep Kyle Orton and company in check Sunday, they’re going to have to make sure tackling part of the gameplan. Of course, I guess they should always make sure tackling part of the gameplan.

The fact is that there’s almost NO chance the Broncos will have success running the ball; but they might get time to throw it given the Ravens’ lack of pass rush. If Orton gets time, he’ll find his targets. The Ravens just need to make those targets don’t get out of their grasp and get downfield.

2. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says DE Paul Kruger (knee) not expected to return until after bye week

I know I already made a suggestion yesterday, but I think it’s fair for me to make another. With the Ravens needing help at DE for a little while, I think it’s fair that they consider going with Helen Flanagan. (Thanks Guyism!)

flanagan

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says Kruger, Tavares Gooden, Jared Gaither, Donte’ Stallworth all OUT Sunday

And we knew all four guys would be out, so this comes as no surprise. As far as who else will be down Sunday-my guess would be Scott Kooistra, Edgar Jones, Arthur Jones and Lamar Divens.

As far as Gaither’s concerned, he told us yesterday he “can’t wait” to get back on the field this season and maintained that he didn’t need surgery. While I by no means believe Gaither is above criticism, I ABSOLUTELY think that the conspiracy theorists who believe Gaither is simply taking part in an elaborate holdout orchestrated by Drew Rosenhaus are absolutely goofy.

Faking a back injury doesn’t earn you any money…anywhere…ever.

As far as IR is concerned, the Ravens can’t just simply place Gaither on IR to “wash their hands” of the situation as some might suggest. They know that there isn’t a single player available who is NEARLY as good as Gaither. Not in the same galaxy. Therefore, they have to be willing to be just a bit more patient with their big man.

It’s definitely frustrating.

4. CSNBaltimore.com’s John Eisenberg says Ravens amongst Super Bowl contenders after win over Pittsburgh Steelers

I couldn’t agree more. In fact, I said the same thing on Facebook and Twitter (follow us @WNST) Sunday night; then had to fight with not just folks from the Steel City, but also folks that are Ravens fans!

Winning at Heinz Field clarified that the Ravens are legitimately amongst the best teams in the AFC. I’m not sure why anyone would want to argue with that, but for some reason, certain fans are. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

The team is a Super Bowl contender. It doesn’t mean they’re going to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Arlington, it doesn’t even mean they’re going to play in the game. But it does mean they have a real opportunity, which as of right now can’t be said of other teams-like the Miami Dolphins.

5. The AP’s David Ginsburg says DT Haloti Ngata ‘humble’ star

Before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-The Ravens are back on the practice field today at 1 Winning Drive; and we will of course be in Owings Mills to cover it. We are expected to hear from Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron, Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison, Special Teams Coordinator Jerry Rosburg and LB Terrell Suggs amongst others today. Make sure you’re tuned in to AM1570 WNST, checking us on Twitter and staying right here at WNST.net!

-Did you miss Lamar Divens with Drew Forrester Thursday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today to check it out. Some other things you can find in the Audio Vault include…

 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who joined Drew Thursday morning to go around the NFL
 • John Plevyak (Stevenson University Soccer Coach)-who checked in with Drew Thursday to discuss the Mustangs’ big win Wednesday over Salisbury
 • Denison Cabral (Baltimore Blast legend)-who discussed the end of his tenure in Baltimore with Drew Thursday
 • Vic Carucci (NFL.com)-who joined Rex Snider Wednesday on “The Afternoon Drive” to discuss Joe Flacco and more
 • Barry Barnes (Fanhouse)-who went around the AFC North Wednesday with Rex
 • Charles Bankins (Terrapins ST/TE Coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for the “Terrapins Coaches Report”
 • Anthony Castrovince (MLB.com)-who predicted Roy Halladay’s no-hitter (REALLY) with Thyrl Wednesday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”
 • Joe Posnanski (Sports Illustrated)-who discussed all things MLB postseason with Thryl Wednesday
 • All sorts of Audio from 1 Winning Drive Wednesday-including John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis, Fabian Washington, Jared Gaither, Jarret Johnson, Lardarius Webb, Paul Kruger, TJ Houshmandzadeh and Tavares Gooden

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so your day is planned AGAIN. Could I do anything more for you???

6. Baltimore Business Journal’s Ryan Sharrow says Orioles ratings up 10% on MASN

Not in Glenn Clark’s house. But not because I don’t love the O’s…just because I’m too busy watching Billy The Exterminator…

7. Washington Examiner’s Thom Loverro says Nationals slugger Adam Dunn could end up in Charm City

YES.PLEASE.

Seriously, how do we get him here? I mean, does he need my help in packing? I’m available-I just moved myself last week in a Tropical Storm. I’m ready to go.

My guess is that the Birds DON’T get Adam Dunn from the Nats. Mostly because it will require money. But if they come away with Diora Baird this offseason, I’ll consider it an upgrade. (Thanks FHM via Busted Coverage!)

diorabaird

8. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says Buck Showalter to make decision on Birds’ staff by Friday

And before we move on from the Orioles, a couple of things…

-Ummm….

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland TE David Stinebaugh expected to miss 4-6 weeks with MCL injury

I feel like things are so thin at TE for Ralph Friedgen’s team at this point that I actually might be pressed into taking a handful of snaps against Clemson. I’m ready, for the record.

Also, this sorta dampens my plans to go check out my Perry Hall Gators against Woodlawn on Friday night. I mean, I’ll still go-but I just won’t be as thrilled talking PHHS football with our new greatest alum hurt.

But Go Gators anyway!

10. UMTerps.com says Maryland Madness to open Terps’ basketball season next Friday at Comcast Center

In honor of Lefty Driesell, they should leave it at midnight. Despite that, I’ll certainly be in College Park Friday night to celebrate Gary Williams’ newest team. But if somehow Hiromi Oshima were to be there next Friday, I think I’d be willing to forgive the fact that it isn’t at midnight. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

oshima

And finally, I leave you with this.

I gave you Keenan Cahill doing Ke$ha yesterday. Apparently he does Usher and Katy Perry as well…

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because I get to start the week out with the “Greatest Song(s) of All Time This Week.” The NEW version of TGSOATTW goes to Eric Church (the song is called “Guys Like Me”) because I saw the dude play Sunday night at Merriweather Post Pavilion with my girl, you know her as “Boomer Sooner”. (Yes, I went to WPOC’s “Sunday in the Country”, live with it.) He’s pretty freaking good…

And the retro version is also “Sunday in the Country”-related, as it was covered by headliner Lady Antebellum. While they’re very talented and played a very enjoyable show-including a decent cover-Lady Antebellum certainly isn’t Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers…

Before we move on-let it be said that the great Free Fallin’ cover of all time was done by John Mayer…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Ravens WR Derrick Mason has happiness in own hands

I couldn’t agree more.

This isn’t about Cam Cameron finding a way to get the ball to Derrick Mason more. It isn’t about Joe Flacco making sure the ball ends up in Mason’s hands. It certainly isn’t about whether or not Anquan Boldin is showing the proper respect to Mason as far as leadership in the locker room.

This is entirely up to Derrick Mason.

If Derrick Mason needs to be a #1 receiver for a good NFL team in order to be happy, he’s not going to be happy ever again. That time has come and gone. Frankly, he was only still the #1 receiver in Charm City by default in recent years-as there simply wasn’t anyone else in town.

Derrick has done a VERY good job over the years as the #1 receiver in Baltimore. Fans in this area will always be grateful for that. But he isn’t that guy anymore, nor will he be ever again barring some sort of terribly unfortunate injury.

If being a good receiver on a good team is enough for Derrick to be happy, he’ll be fine. If it isn’t, it could be a terribly long season.

But if Derrick thinks that by being a malcontent he’ll become the team’s top receiver again, he’s out of his mind.

I THINK he’s smarter than that.

2. The AP’s Alan Robinson says Pittsburgh Steelers will start QB Charlie Batch Sunday vs. Ravens at Heinz Field

And as I said yesterday on Twitter (follow us @WNST), if I’m the Ravens-I’m okay with that.

With no offense to Charlie Batch, but there’s nothing about him that would concern me if I was Greg Mattison. That doesn’t mean the Ravens don’t have to play good defense on Sunday, it just means he doesn’t present any sort of dynamic level that Ben Roethlisberger or Dennis Dixon could have.

Of course, Charlie Batch can still win football games-especially for a team as good as the Pittsburgh Steelers. We saw that Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s still capable even if he isn’t necessarily dynamic.

But he’s NOT the type of quarterback that should be beating the Baltimore Ravens. Doesn’t mean he won’t, just means he shouldn’t.

3. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ray Rice took to Twitter to proclaim knee ‘better’

And since this clarifies absolutely nothing, let’s plan on discussing this again tomorrow.

In the meantime, you know who else has knees that look “better”? Sherri Tiara Lansang. (Thanks F-Listed via Busted Coverage!)

lansang

(Edit from GMC: I’m kidding. Who the hell knows if Sherri Tiara Lansang has any knees?!?!?)

4. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall ‘poses repeat threat’ for Ravens

Before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-The Ravens return to the practice field today at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills. We will be out there to report on Ray Rice, Cory Redding and EVERYTHING going on today. We’re expected to hear from John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco for sure; as well as conference calls with Mike Tomlin and Rashard Mendenhall. Make sure you’re tuned in to AM1570, following us on Twitter @WNST and checking WNST.net for updates.

-The Ravens HAVE terminated the contract of Trevor Pryce and re-signed safety Ken Hamlin. Stunning news despite the lack of production from Pryce this season. We’ll have more throughout the day on this developing story.

-Did you miss Jim Nantz (CBS) this morning with Drew Forrester on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Jim and Phil Simms are calling Ravens/Steelers Sunday; and Jim told us they’ll have Ravens/Patriots in Foxborough as well. Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today if you missed it! Other things you can find in the Audio Vault include:

 • Rob Ambrose (Towson Tigers football coach)-who previewed Saturday’s showdown against UMass with Drew Wednesday morning
 • Mike Bires (Beaver County Times)-who updated Drew on all things black and yellow from the Steel City
 • Leonard Garcia (WEC Fighter)-who joined Thyrl Nelson and John Rallo on “The MMA Report” Tuesday
 • Dario Franchitti & Will Power (IndyCar Series drivers)-who previewed Saturday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami with Thryl on “The Mobtown Sports Beat” Tuesday
 • Gary Graves (USA Today) and Eric Edholm (Pro Football Weekly)-who talked Ravens and all things NFL with Rex Snider on “The Afternoon Drive” Tuesday

It’s all in the Audio Vault-so enjoy your afternoon. Don’t ever say I haven’t done anything for you…

5. The AP’s Fred Goodall says David Price masterful as Tampa Bay Rays beat Orioles at Tropicana Field to clinch playoff spot

David Price HAS to win the Cy Young Award, right?

I know some folks are going to say “Felix Hernandez leads the American League in everything”…but I guess those people think 13-12 doesn’t matter. I think Hernandez belongs in the discussion, but I’m pretty sure his record would leave him third on my ballot behind Price and Jon Lester.

As far as the O’s are concerned, they got worked over by a really good pitcher last night. That’s going to happen to a lot of teams. If they win one more game this week they’ll avoid 100 losses. I think they’ll do that. Once they do, who cares what else happens?

By the way-spare me the “maybe it was good for the young players to see the Rays celebrate in front of them” stuff, MASN. Who freaking cares? Every player-old or young-wants to be able to pour champagne on their teammates. They don’t need to see it in front of them to understand that.

6. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of loss

Brad Bergesen had been pitching really well for awhile until that last night. 5IP, 5ER, 6H, 3BB, 2K. Not good. Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters doubled; but that was about it. Tough night for Adam Jones-he went 0-4 with a pair of K’s.

You don’t want to look at the numbers. Trust me on that. Instead-look at Ancilla Tilia. We’ll still be here when you get back. (Thanks Macenstein!)

macenstein

7. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli & Bill Chastain say Andy MacPhail, Buck Showalter visited new Spring Training facility in Sarasota

Before we move on from the Birds, a couple of things…

-The Birds and Rays wrap up their 3 game series tonight in St. Petersburg. First pitch between Kevin Millwood and Jeff Niemann is at 7:10pm, the game can be seen on MASN2.

-Apparently they’re giving away 20,000 tickets at The Trop tonight. I’d settle for just having to ever see Dick Vitale again if I were a fan of the Rays.

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland QB Jamarr Robinson “limited”, Danny O’Brien likely to start against Duke

My gut feeling is that this is for the best. The longer Jamarr Robinson can’t play because he’s still recovering, the easier it is for Ralph Friedgen to move Danny O’Brien into the starting QB role long term.

Really, I don’t care WHO plays quarterback. Just don’t lose to the Blue Devils. Not again anyway…

9. The Sun says Cincinnati Associate AD Mike Waddell to be named Athletic Director at Towson today

Here’s what former Bearcats LB Brad Jackson said about the news when we passed it along on Twitter yesterday…

“Towson will definately be better with Michael Waddell as A.D.! He was huge in taking Cincy to next level!”

I hope he’s right.

10. Daily Racing Form’s Matt Hegarty says 1998 Preakness and Kentucky Derby winner dead at 15

In other horse racing news, former Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra has been retired from racing and will be bred to another great champion in Curlin. Must be a nice life there-Curlin.

In other news that’s much more significant to me-here’s a picture of Selita Ebanks. (Thanks Guyism!)

ebanks

And finally, I leave you with this.

Here’s the Katy Perry SNL “Sesame Street” spoof everyone is talking about. Now I’ve passed it along…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 23 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because I ventured over to the “Get Spicy Nuggets” website yesterday and went ahead and made a reservation to try out the new product at Chick-Fil-A Nottingham Square next Tuesday…

nuggets

The best part about the reservation? I got an email RIGHT BACK from the great Steve Pavlovsky telling me he was “excited” to have me come by that week. Love it!

I’m hoping the Spicy Nuggets will go well with the Christian Moerlein Golden Helles I picked up in Cincinnati last weekend…

moerlein

I don’t have much positive to say about the Queen City, but this was definitely a good decision.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens released S Ken Hamlin to make room for CB Cary Williams on roster

The only surprising thing about the Ken Hamlin decision is that we had heard from a few different sources that the player getting cut was more likely to be DT Lamar Divens.

But everything about cutting Ken Hamlin really does make sense. The word was that Hamlin was holding a roster spot just until (if?) Ed Reed comes back. The Ravens got value from Hamlin in the secondary and on Special Teams; but Cary Williams is expected to also give them some value in the secondary and on Special Teams.

It’s semi-surprising. It certainly isn’t stunning.

2. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester doesn’t think Derrick Mason media ban any sort of ‘big deal’

And it isn’t.

There’s an argument that Derrick is better off NOT talking to the media right now as he can likely only be frustrated with his role in the offense and the offense in general. Instead of saying something silly about Cam Cameron, Joe Flacco or Anquan Boldin; it might be better for Mason to keep his mouth shut.

Now-it is CERTAINLY hypocritical of Mason to choose not to talk to reporters but still talk on WBAL on his radio show. That’s completely lame, and he should be reminded of that.

3. National Football Post’s says Jared Gaither says notions of holdout ‘foolish’

There’s NOTHING about having a player try to NOT play in order to make more money that makes sense to me. I understand the frustration with Gaither not being on the field, but I have NEVER doubted whether or not he was hurt.

You know what else would be foolish? NOT posting this picture of Lisa Morales. (Thanks DJMICK via Busted Coverage!)

morales

4. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Donte’ Stallworth, Tavares Gooden OUT; Le’Ron McClain, Derrick Mason, Jared Gaither, Browns’ Jake Delhomme DNP in practice Wednesday

And before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-The Ravens are back on the practice field today at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills. We are expected to hear from Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron, Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison and Special Teams Coordinator Jerry Rosburg and LB Ray Lewis today as well. Make sure you’re following us on Twitter (@WNST) and tuned in throughout the day on AM1570.

-Did you miss Ravens OL Chris Chester this morning with Drew Forrester on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head on over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net to check it out. Some other things you can find in the Audio Vault include…

 • Steve Beuerlein (CBS Color Analyst)-who previewed Ravens/Browns with Drew Thursday morning
 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Thursday morning
 • Our “Morning Reaction Cheap Shots” from Thursday morning, including Drew’s shot at Rex Ryan
 • Rhea Hughes (610 WIP Philadelphia)-who discussed the Eagles’ Michael Vick/Kevin Kolb/Andy Reid situation with Rex Wednesday
 • Kevin Lempa (Terps Safeties Coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for the “Terrapins Coaches Report”
 • Les Carpenter (Yahoo! Sports)-who talked Braylon Edwards, etc. with Thyrl Wednesday
 • Mario Cristobal (Florida International Head Coach)-who previewed FIU’s visit to College Park with Thyrl Wednesday
 • PLENTY of audio from Owings Mills Wednesday, including John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Haloti Ngata, Matt Birk, TJ Houshmandzadeh and Jarret Johnson

It’s all there in the Audio Vault. Make sure you check it out today-and shower me with praise for handling your daily plans.

5. The AP says David Ortiz, John Lackey helped Boston Red Sox avoid sweep at hands of Orioles at Fenway Park

I guess Kevin Millwood serves to prove that there IS some sort of immunity to Buck Showalter in Charm City. I wouldn’t have believed it otherwise. 5IP, 6ER, 7H (and 1BB) don’t get the job done.

Earlier in the year I said this jokingly, but now I genuinely mean it. You can’t win them all. Games like last night will happen-even to Buck Showalter!

6. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of loss

You REALLY don’t want to look at these numbers, especially if your name is Matt Wieters (we’ll get back to him).

Instead of looking at the numbers, look at Brittany Dailey. It will be a much more pleasant experience…

dailey

7. CSNBaltimore.com’s Pete Kerzel says O’s Wieters has ‘room for growth and improvement’

And before we move on from the Birds, a couple of things…

-Make sure you check out Jay Trucker’s Brian Roberts blog today at WNST.net. I think it’s pretty interesting; as 2005 was the last time baseball fans in Baltimore had any level of excitement.

-The Orioles are off tonight, they head up to Canada (hopefully Adam Jones won’t have any trouble) to open a series with the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow night. Chris Tillman will face Brett Cecil in the first game; and Jeremy Guthrie will go for the Birds Saturday night. Otherwise, we don’t know much about the pitching matchups.

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland, Texas agree to football series in 2017-2018

The best number Patrick points out in his blog? Maryland is 0-3 all time against the ‘Horns; and have been outscored 102-0 in the three games.

Yikes.

A lot could change between now and the trip to Austin in 2017 or the return at FedEx Field in DC in 2018. Will Muschamp will likely be the head coach for Texas; and who knows what will happen in College Park as they try to sort out Ralph Friedgen and James Franklin.

But I don’t think everything will change. I’m no betting man, but if the early line was Maryland (+28), I don’t know if I could bet the Terps.

9. TowsonTigers.com says visit from Princeton, trips to George Washington and UMBC highlight Tigers’ hoops schedule

I remember Bob Ehrlich made an appearance in Catonsville when Princeton visited UMBC a few years back. I think he was still governor then.

I wonder….eh, I’ll leave that alone for now.

It’s always cool to have celebrities sitting courtside at big games. Maybe the visit from Princeton would even be cool enough for Erin Heatherton to sit courtside. (Thanks Guyism!)

heatherton

10. Inside Lacrosse’s Danielle Bernstein says former Navy lacrosse player Brandon Looney killed in Afghanistan

This goofy blog is much too irreverent to do justice for this terrible loss. Brandon Looney (like so many of the young men who we’ve lost in Afghanistan and Iraq) won’t get the attention that a Pat Tillman did; but he deserves a great deal of honor.

We thank Brandon Looney for giving the greatest sacrifice, and we wish the best to his family, friends and everyone in the Midshipmen family.

God bless.

And finally, I leave you with this.

30 Rock is back tonight. That pleases me.
