I can only assume Scott Weiland will dip into his Christmas collection at RHL…

I’m such a nerdy J. Roddy Walston guy…

In honor of Chiddy Bang, I think I’ll introduce myself on the show this week by saying “I’m Glenn Clark…and I’m pretty much amazing”…

Gaslight Anthem is one of the five best things to happen to music in 2012 (Lumineers, Gary Clark Jr., Alabama Shakes, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)…

I’ve been playing an ATL song on the show recently. Might not be my thing, but if you name a song “For Baltimore” you can be sure I’ll be in on it.

I saw Citizen Cope again this summer, I remembered I freaking LOVE seeing Citizen Cope…

Of Monsters And Men won’t make a ton of critics’ choice lists this year, but they should…

I watched O.A.R.’s Red Rocks show live on AXS TV back in the summer. It was tremendous. Of course it was.

Towson football to be featured on “60 Minutes” this weekend

Posted on 15 November 2012 by WNST Staff

TIGER FOOTBALL TO BE FEATURED ON “60 MINUTES”
CBS News Magazine Accompanied Tiger Football Team On Trip To LSU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Towson University football program will be featured as part of a report on college football, scheduled to air on the November 18 edition of the CBS-TV program, “60 Minutes.”

The most successful news program in television history, “60 Minutes” airs on CBS-TV on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. (EDT).

When the Towson football team travelled to Louisiana State University in late September, CBS reporter Armen Keteyian and his crew accompanied the team. They conducted numerous interviews as part of their story on college football.

Before and after the game against LSU, Keteyian interviewed Coach Rob Ambrose, Director of Athletics Mike Waddell and several players.

Facing one of the top major college football teams in the nation, Towson was a decided underdog when the teams met on Sept. 29.

However, Towson gained national notoriety with its gutty performance against LSU. Towson actually took a 9-7 lead in the second quarter before eventually dropping a 38-22 decision.

Towson’s 22 points scored are the most allowed by LSU this season. LSU currently has an 8-2 record and is ranked eighth in the nation.

According to the story preview, there is no recession when it comes to big-time college football, where hundreds of millions are spent to renovate stadiums, stealth fighters are hired to entertain fans and head coaches can make several million dollars a year.  That’s because football programs have become critical tools in a race to raise revenues, bolster images and ultimately, win bowl games and championships that will attract more students and better players next year.

The University of Michigan Wolverines play in a 112,000-seat stadium, the biggest in the country and recently renovated to the tune of $226 million. The school is a perennial power, but Michigan’s Athletic Director Dave Brandon tells Keteyian you can never sit still in what many call an arms race. “If you don’t keep pace, if you don’t stay competitive, you’re going to have a problem.”

With the revenue from the football program paying for 75 percent of all the other sports programs under him at the 40,000-student public university, Brandon has a huge responsibility. “We’re going to have excited fans, we’re going to fill stadiums, we’re going to be on TV. We’re going to accomplish all the goals that we need to accomplish to keep this department moving ahead,” says Brandon, who once hired a stealth fighter to fly over Michigan’s stadium to fire up the crowd.

Brandon’s work paid off in spades recently.   His team was picked by ESPN to play a televised, season debut game against the Alabama Crimson Tide a few months ago.  Alabama has the ideal football program and one of the country’s highest-paid coaches in Nick Saban, who makes more than $5 million per year.

Is he worth it asks Keteyian?

“Probably not,” says Saban with a laugh. “But I think the other side of that is you almost have to look at what return has there been on that investment.” Alabama has won two national championships in three years and profits have nearly tripled since he took the job in 2007.
The Alabama-Michigan game was viewed on television by millions. It stoked interest in the coming seasons of both teams, selling tickets and merchandise. It burnished images of big, successful universities potential students could be proud to attend.  It’s the kind of reality that’s only a dream for other schools, but still an essential goal for many of them, like Towson University in Maryland.

Towson is about half the size of schools like Michigan and Alabama and plays in a subdivision of Division I in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  It’s good football, but not in a league with Alabama, Michigan or another powerhouse, Louisiana State University. But when the Towson Tigers were asked to play LSU in a televised match, a certain loss, the team saw a win-win situation.

Not only did the game mean a guaranteed $500,000 from LSU – money  to seed scholarships for future players and to improve facilities, among other things to pump its program up – but a chance at national and historic exposure.

“They’ll be more people watching this game tonight than perhaps have ever watched anything to do with Towson University in our history, going back 146 years,” says its Athletic Director Mike Waddell.    Watch a clip.

The Tigers kept it close until the second half and lost 38-22 in what could be considered a very respectable showing and a single step up the ladder towards elite, big-time status someday.  Says Waddell, “You couldn’t buy this type of an advertisement nationally.”

A Towson graduate, Bill Owens, ’88, is the executive producer of “60 Minutes.”

Go see the Ravyns because Rob Fahey is the freaking greatest.

I had no idea Unwritten Law was still a thing. I’m so freaking in.

JD McPherson has a throwback sound that pleases me greatly.

I think there’s a significant chance Lauryn Hill is crazy. I don’t care. She’s so freaking ridiculously talented. I still can’t believe what a jerk her mom was to her in Sister Act 2 though.

Otherwise…here’s a guy with a horse head mask running through Hurricane Sandy on a local DC news cast…

And here’s a picture Kate Upton Tweeted recently…

Yep, we upgraded there.

I’ll start by saying there is absolutely ZERO about Blues Traveler that doesn’t kick ass…

SNL might have been your first chance to get a taste of Passion Pit. That doesn’t make you a bad person. No, no it does…

You say you haven’t heard of Ben Kweller? Yeah you have…

Holy hell Spring Heeled Jack is still a thing? My 10th grade year was so much better because of them…

9. If there’s anything worth devoting an entire week to around these parts, I’d say beer would be about #1 to #20 on the list. My fall go to?

And say whatever you want, Jay & Bob were a defining part of my adolescence. I still make conversational references to “The Amy Story” or “Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season” at least once a week…

Yes.

Setting the Stage

• Navy and Air Force will meet for the 45th time on the gridiron when they square off early Saturday morning at Falcon Stadium (46,692).  Kickoff is set for 9:30 am in Colorado Springs (11:30 am in Annapolis).
• The game is the first leg of the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, which is presented annually to the winner of the football competition among the three major Service Academies, and is named in honor of the President of the United States.
•  Air Force leads the series with the Mids, 27-17, and is 24-16 against Navy since the inception of the CIC Trophy in 1972.  The Falcons are 15-6 all-time against Navy in Colorado Springs.
• Last year, the Falcons beat Navy in Annapolis, 35-34, in overtime.  It was the second overtime game in the last three years between the two clubs.  Navy defeated Air Force in overtime, 16-13, in 2009.
• Saturday’s game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports with Spero Dedes, Steve Beuerlein and Otis Livingston calling the action.
• CBS Sports Network will air a pregame show at 11:30 AM

Scouting Air Force

•    The Falcons are off to a 2-2 start with victories over Idaho State (49-21) and Colorado State (42-21) and losses to Michigan (31-25) and UNLV (38-35).
• Air Force is the nation’s leading rushing team, averaging 396.3 yards per game.
•    The Falcons also rank 20th in total offense (500.3 yds/gm), second in net punting (44.6 yds/punt), 18th in punt returns (15.0), 17th in kickoff returns (26.8) and first in sacks alllowed (0.0).
•    Senior running back Cody Getz is the second-leading rusher in the country, averaging 170.8 yards per contest.  He rushed for 222 yards on 25 carries last week against Colorado State and has rushed for more than 100 yards in all four games this year. Getz is the first player in Air Force history to rush for more than 100 yards in the first four games of the year.  He has seven rushing touchdowns on the year.
•    Senior quarterback Connor Dietz has carried the ball 46 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 23 of his 44 passes for 416 yards with two TDs and one interception.
•    Dietz’s favorite target is senior wide receiver Ty MacArthur, who has eight catches for 192 yards and has also rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
•    Senior linebacker Austin Niklas leads the Air Force defense with 35 tackles, three forced fumbles and two tackles for a loss, while Brian Lindsay has 31 tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss.

The Last Time …
AIR FORCE 35, NAVY 34 OT    OCT. 1, 2011 | ANNAPOLIS, MD.
• Tim Jefferson scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Parker Herrington kicked the extra-point to give Air Force a 35-34 overtime victory over Navy in front of 37,506 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Oct. 1, 2011.
• Herrington’s extra-point was the game-winner thanks to a controversial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against Navy quarterback Kriss Proctor after Proctor had scored a touchdown on Navy’s first possession in overtime.Jon Teague, who was pushed back 15 yards on his extra-point try, kicked the ball low and it was blocked by Alex Means.
• It was a topsy-turvy game with the Falcons dominating the first quarter and Navy dominating the fourth.
• Air Force jumped out to a 14-0 lead with touchdowns the first two times it had the ball.
• The Mids cut the lead to 14-3 on their second drive, moving 61 yards in 10 plays, had to settle for a 25-yard field goal.
• The Navy defense, however, could not stop Air Force as the Falcons answered with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with tailback Asher Clark scoring from 23 yards out to give Air Force a 21-3 lead.
• The Mids made it 21-10 early in the third quarter when Proctor scored on a two-yard run.
• The Falcons looked to have put the final nail in Navy’s coffin with an eight-play, 89-yard drive that was finished off by Clark’s six-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Air Force a 28-10 lead.
• Navy, though, moved 62 yards on 14 plays with Proctor scoring from the seven to cut Air Force’s lead to 28-17.
• After the Navy defense held Air Force to a three-and-out, the Mids went 73 yards in 16 plays with Teague making a 37-yard field goal to make the score 28-20 with 2:04 left.
• Navy had to go for the onside kick and Teague pulled off a beauty as the ball took a perfect bounce into the hands of Navy wide receiver Brandon Turner giving Navy the ball at the Air Force 41.
• The Mids quickly moved down the field and scored with just 19 seconds left on a five-yard touchdown pass from Proctor to junior slot back Gee Gee Greene, who made a beautiful one-handed catch.  Navy had to go for two to tie the game and Proctor did a masterful job of running the double option, pitching to fullback Alexander Teich at the last second and Teich dove inside the left pylon to tie the game at 28.
• Air Force won the toss and elected to go on defense first.  Proctor took it in from the one to give Navy a six-point lead.
• After the play, Proctor was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct as he said something to AF safety Jon Davis after the play.

The Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy
• The Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy is presented annually to the winner of the football competition among the three major service academies — Army, Navy and Air Force — and is named in honor of the President of the United States.
• Navy has dominated of late, winning the trophy a Service Academy record seven-consecutive years from 2003-09 and winning a Service Academy record 15-straight games against Air Force and Army in the process.  Air Force has won the trophy each of the last two years.
• Navy has won the trophy a total of 12 times: 1973, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1981, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
• When there is no clear-cut winner,  the trophy remains with the winner of the previous year’s competition.
• The three-sided trophy stands two-and-a-half-feet tall and is engraved with the academy seals.  Reproductions of the three mascots — the Army Mule, the Navy Goat and the Air Force Falcon — are ensconced on the respective sides of this bauble.  The trophy is sponsored by the West Point Association of Graduates, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and the Air Force Association of Graduates.
• The year in which the trophy is won is engraved on AA plate gracing the respective academy’s side of the trophy.

Navy Versus The Mountain West
• Navy is 19-32 (.373) all-time against teams currently in the Mountain West Conference.  The Mids are 17-27 against Air Force, 0-3 against San Diego State, 0-2 against Hawai’i, 1-0 against Colorado State and 1-0 against New Mexico.
• The Mids beat Colorado State (Poinsettia) and New Mexico (Emerald) in bowl games.
• Navy has never played Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, UNLV or Wyoming.

Homecoming
• Navy has two players that hail from the state of Colorado.
• Senior starting left tackle Ryan Paulson and sophomore linebacker David Thurston are both from Broomfield, Colo.

Navy Nuggets
• Playing Notre Dame in Dublin and Penn State at State College was the toughest first two games in school history.
• In the last 40 years, Navy has started the year with two BCS opponents just eight times and only twice (2005 and 1982) did Navy go on to have a winning record.
• Navy lost to Maryland in Baltimore and at home against Stanford to start the 2005 season and finished 8-4 and beat Virginia and lost to Arkansas in Little Rock in 1982 and finished 6-5.
• The Navy defense has not allowed a touchdown in nine consecutive quarters.  The last touchdown the defense surrendered came with 2:23 left in the third quarter in State College when Penn State scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass.  The streak is the longest by a Navy defense since 2008 when the Mids did not allow a touchdown for 10 straight quarters (fourth quarter against Notre Dame, shut out Northern Illinois, shut out Army and did not allow a first quarter score to Wake Forest).
• The Mids have been shut out in the first quarter in eight of the last 12 games dating back to last year and have not scored a touchdown in the first quarter in 11 of the last 13 games.
• Navy has been outscored, 30-3, in the first quarter this year and 82-23 in the first quarter over the last 13 games dating back to last year.
• In Navy’s last six wins it has outscored the opposition, 118-34, in the first half, including 46-3 in the first quarter.
• The Mids have suffered a first quarter turnover in the red zone in each of the last three contests.
• Navy has already turned the ball over 12 times this year (nine lost fumbles and three interceptions) after committing just 15 turnovers in 2011 (nine lost fumbles and six interceptions).  Junior quarterback Trey Miller is responsible for 10 of Navy’s 12 turnovers (seven fumbles and three interceptions) with five of those turnovers coming inside the opponents’ 30-yard line.
• In the Mids’ last 10 losses, Navy has been outscored, 199-69, in the first half, including 86-10 in the first quarter.
• Under Niumatalolo, the Mids are 21-3 (.875) when leading after the first quarter and 12-21 (.364) when trailing or tied after the first stanza.
• Navy has been held under 300 yards rushing in nine of its last 16 games and the Mids are just 1-8 (.111) in those games (Army in 2011 is the lone win).
• The Mids are 18-5 (.783) under Niumatalolo when rushing for 300 yards or more and 15-19 (.441) when the offense is held under 300 yards rushing.
• Navy is 27-4 (.870) under Niumatalolo when scoring first and 6-20 (.231) when the opponent scores first.
• An opposing running back has rushed for over 100 yards in a game against Navy in nine of the last 16 contests.  In the previous 40 games, Navy surrendered only nine 100-yard rushing games to opposing running backs.
• The shutout by San Jose State marked the first time that the Navy offense had been shut out since Oct. 14, 2006, when Rutgers defeated Navy, 34-0.
• The San Jose State game marked the first time that Navy played in a game without a touchdown since Nov. 28, 1981, when the Army-Navy game ended in a 3-3 tie.
• Navy’s 144 yards of total offense marks the second-fewest yards by Navy during the triple option era (2002-present), second only to the Connecticut game on Nov. 16, 2002, when the Mids mustered just 82 yards of total offense in the contest.
• Navy owns a 16-7 (.696) record in games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium under Ken Niumatalolo and is 17-17 (.500) away from home.

This song kicks ass…

Also, Alabama Shakes…

And if I’m not in Columbia Saturday night (or at ALDS Game 1), I hope to be at RHL…

You may have heard me play the new Muse track a couple of times on the show. Listener Bobby described it as “hot fire”, but I thought that was reserved for Dylan Dilinjah…

Also, here’s a preview of the film…

• The Navy-Notre Dame football game is the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in the country. This will be the second meeting between these two schools in Dublin with Notre Dame beating Navy, 54-27, in 1996 at Croke Park.
• The presenting sponsor for the Emerald Isle Classic is The Gathering Ireland 2013, which will be a spectacular, year-long celebration of Ireland and all things Irish starting on Jan. 1, 2013.
• CBS Sports will broadcast the game back to the United States to 100 percent of the country.  Air time will be 9:00 am (ET), 8:00 am (CT), 7:00 am (MT), 6:00 am (PT) and 3:00 am in Hawai’i, the home state of Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo.  Verne Lundquist (play-by-play), Gary Danielson (analyst), Tracy Wolfson (sideline) and David Feherty (sideline) will call the action.
• ESPN America will take the television feed from CBS and air the game in 66 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  For a list of countries that get ESPN America, go to:  www.espnamerica.com
• American Forces Network will also carry the CBS television feed.  The AFN worldwide radio and television broadcast network serves American service men and women, Department of Defense and other U.S. government civilians and their families stationed at bases overseas, as well as U.S. Navy ships at sea.  The game will be available in 175 countries and U.S. territories thanks to AFN.

Pregame Festivities
• Pregame festivities will get underway at approximately 1:49 pm in Dublin with the march-on of the Brigade of Midshipmen.  Nearly 1,000 of the 4,400 members of the Brigade of Midshipmen have paid their own way to be at the game.
• The United States and the Irish National Anthems will be sung by the Naval Academy Glee Club at approximately 1:56 pm.
• The Notre Dame marching band will perform at halftime.

Navy-Notre Dame Series
• Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Navy, 72-12-1, which includes a 56-14 win over the Mids in South Bend a year ago.  Navy had won three of the previous four meetings against the Irish prior to last year’s loss.
• In 2007, Navy defeated Notre Dame, 46-44 in triple overtime.  The win by Navy broke Notre Dame’s 43-game winning streak over the Mids which marks the longest winning streak by one team over another in NCAA history.
• Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is one of just three Navy coaches to beat Notre Dame in back-to-back seasons (2009-10), joining Eddie Erdelatz (1956-57) and Wayne Hardin (1960-61).
• Hardin is the only Navy coach to beat Notre Dame three times over the course of a career, defeating the Irish in 1960 with Heisman Trophy winner Joe Bellino (14-7), 1961 (13-10) and in 1963 with Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach (35-14).

Why Navy And Notre Dame Play
• While World War II raged in Europe during the early 1940s, it was becoming evident that the United States isolationist policy from entering the war would be in jeopardy.
•    In need of better cash flow as a private school, Notre Dame president Rev. Hugh O’Donnell offered the school’s facilities to the armed forces as a training ground. During World War I, the Army operated a Students Army Training Corps program on the Notre Dame campus. This combined military training for students who also were majoring in their college courses.
• However, in the early 1940s, the Army did not respond to O’Donnell’s invitation — but the Navy did. In Sept. 1941, it established the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps where approximately 150 Notre Dame students per year enrolled.
•     In early 1942, Notre Dame turned over four of its resident halls to the Navy for its V-7 program, which also was known as the Midshipmen’s School.
• During that transformation, the Navy constructed a drill hall and a headquarters/classroom building on the north side of the campus — where today’s Hesburgh Memorial Library with the “Touchdown Jesus” mural is located. (It was dedicated in 1962, after the Navy drill hall had been razzed after 19 years of standing.)
• With the United States fully engaged in World War II by 1943, the Navy needed more men to serve and it again teamed with Notre Dame to form the V-12 program.
• On July 1, 1943, Notre Dame welcomed 1,851 active-duty trainees — the largest of its kind — to the campus. By comparison, Notre Dame’s civilian student enrollment was merely 700. Thus, five more resident halls were opened to the sailors.
• The V-12 men were scattered throughout Notre Dame’s five colleges, attended classes with the civilian students, were granted regular academic credit and, in contrast to the NROTC and the Midshipman’s School, were taught by the regular faculty.
• “We were out of business during World War II,” notes 1952-87 Notre Dame president Rev. Theodore Hesburgh in a 1992 interview with the South Bend Tribune. “Navy came in and kept us afloat until the war was over.”
• Hesburgh vowed that under his watch the football series between the two schools would be kept as long as Navy wanted it continued.

Navy, Notre Dame Extend Series
• Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk and Notre Dame Director of Athletics and Vice President Jack Swarbrick announced last fall that Navy’s football series with Notre Dame, which is the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in college football, has been extended to 2026, which will be the centennial year for the series.
• “Our institutional relationship with Notre Dame goes back decades,” said Gladchuk.  “Along with the vast mutual respect we share as two of the finest educational institutions in the nation, that same dimension of appreciation is evident on the football field.  Continuing this traditional and classic rivalry for years to come has always been a priority for both schools.  I am grateful to Jack and his staff for working with us to ensure the continuation of this annual highlight enjoyed by millions of fans during each college football season.”
• The Irish and Mids will meet in South Bend on odd years, while on even years the game will be Navy’s home game, customarily played at regional NFL venues.
• The two schools, which have played every year since 1926, will meet for the 86th time on Sept. 1 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

The Last Time …
Notre Dame 56, Navy 14    Oct. 29, 2011 | South Bend, Ind.
• Tommy Rees completed 16 of his 22 pass attempts for 237 yards and one touchdown, while Jonas Gray and Cierre Wood combined for five rushing touchdowns to lead Notre Dame to a 56-14 rout of Navy in front of 80,795 at Notre Dame Stadium.
•    The Irish jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by Gray and a one-yard run by Wood.
• Navy cut the lead to 14-7 after Jabaree Tuani recovered a fumble at the Notre Dame 27-yard line early in the second quarter.  The Mids moved those 27 yards in six plays with sophomore quarterback Trey Miller, making his first-career start, hitting Gee Gee Greene on a nine-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal.
• Navy’s hopes of an upset, however, were quickly dashed as Rees came back and hit Michael Floyd with a 56-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage and then, after Navy’s Marcus Thomas was unable to come up with the kickoff, the Irish would make it 28-7 when Gray scored from the two.
• The Mids got a touchdown in the fourth quarter from sophomore quarterback Jarvis Cummings, who ran it in from 12 yards out on his first-career carry.
•    Senior fullback Alexander Teich led the Mids with 15 carries for 62 yards.  Miller had 55 yards on 19 carries and completed just five of his 13 pass attempts for 33 yards and one touchdown.
•    Freshman Chris Ferguson led the defense with a career-high nine tackles and a pass break-up.  Tra’ves Bush was in on eight stops, while Matt Warrick had eight tackles and recorded his first-career interception.  Freshman corner Parrish Gaines, making his first-career start, had seven tackles.

The Gathering Ireland 2013
• The Gathering Ireland 2013 is the presenting sponsor of the 2012 Emerald Isle Classic.
•    What is the Gathering?  The Gathering Ireland 2013 will be a spectacular, year-long celebration of Ireland and all things Irish.
•    Ireland may be a small country, but the Irish have put down roots all over the world. Over 70 million people worldwide now claim Irish ancestry, quite something, considering the total Irish population of today is just 5.6 million.
•    Throughout 2013, the Irish will throw open their arms, inviting friends and family from around the world to visit for what promises to be an incredible year.  A packed calendar of local gatherings is planned with communities, towns and villages across Ireland already busy planning events and festivals.
•    Given the strong, historic connections between Ireland and America, an ideal launch pad for the Gathering Ireland 2013 is the Emerald Isle Classic football game between Notre Dame and Navy.
•    The Gathering will kick off in spectacular style with a major large scale New Year’s Eve Festival in Dublin 2012. The Festival will involve open-air concerts, markets, family and musical events, with a special showcase event on New Year’s Eve in College Green featuring an array of some of Ireland’s finest musical talent.
•    Log on to www.thegatheringireland.com to see what else is planned for 2013 and how you can be part of it.
•    For information on planning your vacation, see www.discoverireland.com and make sure your trip to Ireland next year provides memories that will last a lifetime.

Special Helmet Logo
•    This fall the Navy football helmets will feature a special decal displaying the number 1812 to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
• The United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812, because of British interference with the United States’ commerce and her rights to sail the seas without hindrance.  The small U.S. Navy of barely 20 ships faced off against the largest Navy in the world.  The war lasted until February 17, 1815, when the U.S. Senate ratified the peace treaty.  More than 2,200 Americans were killed in action, and some of the country’s greatest Navy captains emerged from the war, like Isaac Hull, Stephen Decatur, Charles Stewart, James Lawrence, Oliver Hazard Perry and David Porter.

Navy Nuggets
• Navy is 2-2 in season openers under head coach Ken Niumatalolo, defeating Towson (41-13 in 2008) and Delaware (40-7 in 2011) and losing to Ohio State (31-27 in 2009) and Maryland (17-14 in 2010).  Navy last beat an FBS opponent in the opener in 2007 when Navy won at Temple, 30-19.
• This year’s game marks the first time Navy has opened its season against Notre Dame.  The game is traditionally played in late October or early November.
• Five of Navy’s seven losses in 2011 were by a combined total of 11 points. The Mids finished 2-5 in games decided by eight points or less. The five losses by eight points or less were tied for the fifth most in the country.  Under head coachKen Niumatalolo, Navy is 14-13 (.519) in games decided by eight or fewer points.
• Navy finished 2011 ranked No. 1 in the country in fewest penalties per game (2.3) and penalty yards per game (20.0).
•    Navy owns a 17-15 (.531) record in games played away from the friendly confines of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium under Niumatalolo, including a 3-4 (.429) mark in 2011.  Meanwhile, the Mids are 15-6 (.714) in home games under Niumatalolo which included a 2-3 (.400) record in 2011.
• In Navy’s five wins last year, it outscored the opposition, 105-31, in the first half, including 43-0 in the first quarter.
• In the Mids’ seven losses last year, they were outscored, 152-66, in the first half, including 59-10 in the first quarter.
• The Mids are 8-9 (.470) under Niumatalolo with more than one week to prepare, including a 4-0 (1.000) mark against Army.
• Navy made 48 trips inside the red zone in its 12 games, scoring 37 times (.771), including 30 touchdowns (.625). The Mids were tied for 88th in the country in red zone offense.
• Navy was held below 300 yards rushing in half of its games last year, winning just one of those games (Army). The Mids were 4-2 (.667) when rushing for more than 300 yards in 2011.
• Navy produced a 5-2 (.714) record in 2011 and is 27-4 (.870) under Niumatalolo when scoring first.  The Mids were 0-5 in 2011 and are 5-17 (.227) under Niumatalolo when the opponent scores first.
• The Mids were 5-0 last season when leading after the first quarter and 0-7 when tied or trailing after the first quarter.  Under Niumatalolo, the Mids are 21-3 (.875) when leading after the first quarter and 11-18 (.379) when trailing or tied after the first stanza.
• An opposing running back rushed for over 100 yards in a game against the Mids in eight of the 12 contests last year.  In the previous three years, Navy surrendered only nine 100-yard rushing games to opposing running backs.
