Towson wraps busy weekend with blowout win over Cincinnati Christian

Junior Mike Burwell Leads Four Tigers in Double Figures with 18 Points


RICHMOND, Ky. – The Towson men’s basketball team posted its second straight wire-to-wire win with a dominate 79-40 win over Cincinnati Christian University in the final game of the 2012 Comfort Suites Invitational on Monday afternoon. The Tigers, who defeated Radford on Friday and Kennesaw State on Sunday, posted a 3-1 mark during the tournament.

With the win, Towson improves its overall record to 3-2, its best mark after five games since the start of the 2008-09 season when the Tigers also started 3-2.

The 39-point margin of victory Monday was Towson’s largest since a 122-58 win over Buffalo on March 7, 1992.

Junior Mike Burwell led four Tigers in double figures with 18 points. The guard scored in double figures for the second consecutive game, netting three three-point field goals in each contest.

Graduate student Bilal Dixon registered his second double-double of the season with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting and a game-high 11 rebounds. The forward/center added six blocked shots to his stat line in just 22 minutes of action.

Junior Marcus Damas (12) and sophomore Kris Walden (10) also scored in double digits, while junior Jerrelle Benimon posted nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in 21 minutes.

For the third straight game Towson got off to a hot start and after a Jerome Hairston jumper four minutes in, the Tigers led 7-0.

Leading 16-11 midway through the opening period, Towson tallied 13 of the next 17 points and the Tigers would lead by 20 at halftime.

Towson scored the first seven points of the second half to go up 46-19 and the Tigers would lead by as many as 42 in the second half. Towson held Cincinnati Christian to just five second half field goals in a dominating defensive effort.

The Tigers shot 56.6 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle for the fourth straight game, 46-22. Towson held the Eagles to just 16.7 percent shooting in the second half and 24.1 percent for the game.

All 13 Tigers played in the game, with 12 of them scoring

Towson will return to action on Monday, Nov. 26 at local rival Loyola. Tip time from Reitz Arena in Baltimore is set for 7:30 p.m.

Towson to play four games in four days at Comfort Suites Invitational

Tigers to Play Four Games in Four Days at Eastern Kentucky University

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men’s basketball team is set to travel to Richmond, Ky. to participate in the 2012 Comfort Suites Invitational, hosted by Eastern Kentucky University.

The Tigers (0-1) will play four games in four days starting with a matchup against Radford on Friday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.

Towson will also play Eastern Kentucky (11/17), Kennesaw State (11/18) and Cincinnati Christian (11/19).

The Tigers, which dropped their regular season opener on November 9 at the College of Charleston, are coming off a 72-64 exhibition win over Goldey-Beacom College on Monday.

Junior Mike Burwell led the four Tigers in double figures with 16 points on seven of nine shooting.

Radford enters the tournament at 1-1 after a loss at Wake Forest and an overtime victory at home against Cincinnati Christian. Sophomore guard R.J. Price leads the Highlanders with an average of 16.0 points per game.

Eastern Kentucky sits at 1-0 after beating Cincinnati Christian, 89-56, in the first game of the Comfort Suites Invitational last Friday. Newcomer Glenn Cosey had a game-high 20 points in his EKU debut.

Kennesaw State is 1-1 on the year. The Owls lost by nine points at Tennessee in their season-opener and beat South Carolina State, 67-65, on the road. Sophomore guard Delbert Love leads the team in scoring at 16 points per game. Aaron Anderson, a 6-foot-7 forward, is averaging 14.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Anderson, who posted 16 points and 12 rebounds against Tennessee, has made 12-of-17 attempts from the fi eld (70.6 percent).

Cincinnati Christian is a NAIA school that plays in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). The Eagles are winless on the season (0-2) but took Radford into overtime before falling 76-71.

Saturday: Towson at EKU, 6 p.m. — Kennesaw State vs. Radford, 8 p.m.
Sunday: Radford at EKU, 5 p.m. — Towson vs. Kennesaw State, 7 p.m.
Monday: Cincinnati Christian vs. Towson, 1 p.m.
