NORFOLK, Va. — Coppin State freshman Patrick Cole was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team as selected by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors and announced by the conference on Sunday.

Cole, who earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors three times this season, was third on the Eagles averaging 10.3 points per game. He was second on the team in assists with 67 and tied for second on the team in steals with 36.

He had an explosive start to his Coppin State career as he poured in 25 points in the season-opener against USC, and had 85 points in his first five games in a CSU uniform.

He scored a season-high 29 points in the Eagles overtime victory at Hampton on Jan. 21.

Deron Powers of Hampton was honored as the MEAC Rookie of the Year. Rashid Gaston of Norfolk State, Bruce Beckford of North Carolina A&T and Darryl Palmer of South Carolina State joined Cole and Powers on the MEAC All-Rookie Team.

Coppin State will open play in the MEAC Tournament on Tuesday (March 12) at 4 p.m. against Bethune-Cookman in the Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Bears have won 4 of its last five games, and will enter the contest coming off a 75-68 Bracketbusters win against the High Point Panthers. Justin Black led the way with 20 points and Blake Bozeman recorded his first double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Coppin State snapped a 7-game losing streak by handing the Howard Bison a 63-56 loss in Washington, D.C. Michael Murray paced the Eagles with 16 points and nine rebounds.

• Coach Todd Bozeman has directed the Bears to the most regular-season conference wins with 101.

• Morgan State defeated High Point in large part as a result of collecting16 offensive rebounds that led to 24 second chance points.

• Justin Black was just shy of posting a triple-double at Liberty. The junior guard finished with a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points and nine assists … he is currently ranks No. 5 in the MEAC by averaging 14.1 ppg.

• DeWayne Jackson is ranked among the top theft artists in school history. Jackson has collected 162 steals with the Bears and currently ranks No. 3 (No. 2 in the MEAC). The school record for career steals is held by Terrence Wright (1992-96) with 186 career steals … Jackson is 25 steals away from becoming the school’s new leader.

• Shaquille Duncan leads the Bears in blocked shots. The sophomore ranks T-No. 5 (41) in the MEAC by averaging 2.1 blocks per game.

• The combination of DeWayne Jackson, Anthony Hubbard and Justin Black have provided almost 60 percent of the scoring for the Bears so far this season.

• The Bears’ first 10 games of the 2012-13 season were on the road where they finished 3-7.

• The Bears used seven different lineups this season, but Coach Bozeman has used a lineup 12 times this season that puts DeWayne Jackson at forward with Justin Black, Blake Bozeman, Anthony Hubbard and Ian Chiles.

LAST TIME VS. COPPIN STATE
February, 9, 2013 — Junior guard Justin Black had a career-high 23 points with six assists to help lift the Bears to 80-51 win at the Physical Education Complex.  The victory snapped the Bears’ 3-game losing streak, and handed Coppin State its fifth consecutive loss. Morgan State held a 14-9 lead (14:39) before stepping on the accelerator.  The Bears took complete control of the game by outscoring the Eagles 30-7, punctuated by a three-pointer by Black at the buzzer to give the Bears a 46-18 halftime lead.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
The Eagles welcome back five veterans, including zero starters, from a squad that posted a 14-16 overall record, finished 6th in the MEAC with a 9-7 ledger. Michael Murray leads the Eagles in scoring and rebounding by averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Troy Franklin (11.8 ppg), Andre Armstrong (10.9 ppg) and Patrick Cole (10.4 ppg) are also averaging double-figures for the Eagles. Head coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell (Edison State ’84) enters his 27th season as the Eagles head coach and he currently holds a 415-394 (.513) record.

UNFAMILIAR FOES
Morgan State will face six teams this season that the program has never met in its basketball history. The first time opponents are: UTSA, Old Dominion, Holy Cross, South Carolina, Illinois State and San Diego. The Bears do not see a familiar foe until the Nov. 29 matchup at Liberty (MSU leads, 1-0), their fifth game of the season. The other five opponents MSU previously has played are University of Virginia (trails, 0-1), Loyola Marymount (leads, 2-0), and Saint Joseph’s (trails, 0-1).

RECOVERING THE SWAG
The Bears will look to rebound from last year’s dismal season in which the Bears recorded a 9-20 finish. It marked Todd Bozeman‘s worst season as a head coach, and it was Morgan State’s worst season since going 4-26 in 2005-06.

DeWayne Jackson (1,485, 519 rebs., 164 asts) needs 26 points to surpass Harry Johnson (1,500 points – 1958-62) to become the school’s No. 8 all-time leading scorer. Jackson is one of three Bears on MSU’s all-time scoring list who have been coached by Todd Bozeman. Kevin Thompson(2009-12) ranks No. 9 (1,487 points) and Reggie Holmes (2007-10) is the school’s all-time scoring leader with 2,051 points.

HOME GROWN
Morgan State has eight players from the Metropolitan-D.C. area, including one from Baltimore. Senior DeWayne Jackson (Bowie High) and sophomore Blake Bozeman (Solebury Prep) are both from Bowie. Transfer guard Daryl Traynham is from Melwood (Wise High), walk-on Daon Riley is from Severn (Old Mill High), and Cedric Blossom is from Columbia (Montrose Christian). Anthony Hubbard is a product of Woodbridge (Va.), while junior Justin Black attended DeMatha High, Willis Turnipseed played at City High, and Donte Pretlow was a standout at Dunbar High in Baltimore.

BOZEMAN WIN PERCENTAGE AT MSU
Todd Bozeman, now in his seventh season as head coach of the Bears, has an overall win percentage of .547 (120-99) after 219 games at Morgan State. That winning mean is the second highest among 15 head coaches in the history of the Morgan State men’s basketball program. Nathaniel Frazier’s winning percentage of .578 (166-121) is the highest percentage in Morgan State history.

BEWARE THE BEAR
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season title may be out of reach for Morgan State, but despite being out of the race Coach Todd Bozeman‘s team appears to be improving and gaining momentum. The Bears have won 4 of its last five games and will finish the regular season with four games against teams with a combined record of 27-76 (.262).  With top teams like Norfolk State, N.C. Central and Savannah State drawing the majority of the attention, it’s easy to see how the Bears can be lost under the radar with a record of 10-14. Morgan State will certainly be a team to watch as we draw closer to the 2013 MEAC Tournament.

HIGH CLASS ON THE GLASS
Morgan State ranks No. 1 in the MEAC averaging 14.6 offensive rebounds per game and has recorded double-digit offensive boards in 21 of 24 games. MSU averaged 12.1 offensive rebounds.

BALTIMORE – Coppin State and Morgan State will renew their cross-town rivalry on Saturday (Feb 9) at 4 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex.

Coppin State enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 5-19 and 2-7 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Junior Michael Murray is the team’s leading scorer averaging 12.1 points per game and he leads the MEAC in rebounding with 9.0 rebounds per game. Andre Armstrong is averaging 21.3 points in his last seven games and he is shooting 42.0 (29-of-69) percent from the three-point line during that stretch. Armstrong also ranks second in the conference averaging 2.2 three-point field goals made per game.

Morgan State has an overall record of 6-13 and a 3-5 in the conference. DeWayne Jackson leads the Bears in scoring averaging 14.4 points per game.

Coppin State leads the all-time series 51-22 and has won two of the last three meetings.

BALTIMORE – The Coppin State department of athletics announced today its second Hall of Fame class. The six Hall of Fame members will be honored at a ceremony from 7-8 p.m. in Baltimore at the Forum Caterers on Friday, Feb. 1. The Hall of Fame class will also be honored during halftime of the Coppin State-Norfolk State men’s basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Physical Education Complex.

The Hall of Fame class of 2013 includes men’s basketball coach Joseph Jones, men’s basketball coach Cyril Byron, men’s basketball player Colbert Carter, men’s basketball player Tony Carter, men’s basketball player Warren Hayman and men’s basketball player James Camphor.

“These men are being inducted for not only their playing and coaching careers at Coppin State, but for their enormous contributions to the community,” said director of athletics Derrick Ramsey. “We take great pride in honoring and recognizing the special talents displayed by our Hall of Fame members during, and after, their time at Coppin State.”

Joseph Jones was the head men’s basketball coach at Coppin State from 1965-70. He led the Eagles to their first-ever conference championship in 1967-68 when Coppin State captured the Potomac Intercollegiate Conference title. A Baltimore native, Jones taught at Coppin State from 1965-85 and retired as the Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and recreation in 1985. He earned his bachelor of science degree from West Virginia State in 1950, his master’s degree from New York University in 1961 and his doctorate from Maryland in 1973. Jones served in the United States Army and retired as a United States Army Reserve warrant officer. He later joined the Maryland State Guard and retired with the rank of Full Colonel. He also had a book published, Requiem for an Ugly Man.

Cyril Byron served as the head men’s basketball coach and athletic director at Coppin State. He spent 23 years at Coppin State where he served as the Chairman of the Science and Mathematics Department, Dean of Education and the President of the Faculty Senate. He later served as an administrator at the Community College of Baltimore from 1976-1985. Byron was the athletic director and the Associate Dean of the Division of Natural Sciences, Health and Physical Education. Prior to his time in the academic world, Byron proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Force 99th fighter squadron, the first, and at the time the only, black Air Force unit. The 99th fighter squadron is popularly known as the Red Tails.

Colbert Carter enjoyed an outstanding four-year career at Coppin State from 1969-72. A Baltimore city native, Colbert was recruited to Coppin State by Dr. Joseph Jones. He played two seasons for Dr. Jones and two for Charles Hardnett. He earned All-Potomac Intercollegiate Conference Honors in 1969, 1970 and 1971. He helped lead the Eagles to a Potomac Intercollegiate Conference championship in 1972. Following his career at Coppin State, Carter earned an invitation to the Baltimore Bullets summer camp. Carter earned his degree in education from Coppin State and taught in the Baltimore City Public Schools and in Charles County. He became the department chair for special education and held that position until his retirement in 2006. He also served as an assistant coach in football, track and field and basketball. He was the head basketball coach at LaPlata High School from 1982-98 where he earned several coaching honors from the county and the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference.

Tony Carter ranks as one of the greatest offensive players in Coppin State history. He played at Coppin State in the 1975-76 and 1976-77 seasons and helped lead the Eagles to the 1976 NAIA National Championship. He, along with Joe Pace, were named to the NAIA All-Tournament team. During his two seasons in a Coppin State uniform the Eagles posted a combined record of 71-5. He ranks fourth all-time in scoring at Coppin State with 1,585 career points. His career scoring average of 22.0 ranks second all-time at Coppin State and his 894 points scored during the 1975-76 season is the most scored by any player in a single season. Additionally, he was named the Potomac Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year in 1977 and owns the official school record for points in a game with 46 against Bowie State.

Warren Hayman was a three-year letterwinner for the men’s basketball team from 1961-63. He earned All-Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Conference honors following his senior season in 1963. Hayman received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Coppin State, his master’s in math education from Stanford and his doctorate in education from Harvard. A career educator, Hayman served in a variety of roles in his 42 years in education including a public school superintendent in California, dean of the School of Education at Coppin State and an Education Policy Fellow at the United States Department of Education. He is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Coppin State Vision award, Baltimore County NAACP Excellence in Education Award and the Phi Beta Sigma Education Award.

James “Winky” Camphor played four seasons of basketball at Coppin State from 1948-51. An original Eagle, Camphor holds the unofficial school record of 50 points in a game against Cheyney in 1950. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Coppin State in 1951 and his master’s degree from Coppin State in 1957. He has a distinguished career following his graduation from Coppin State. He has earned the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Distinguished Alumni Award, State of Maryland Faithful Citizen award, National Association for Sickle Cell Outstanding Member Award, State Department of Mental Health and Hygiene Service Award, City of Baltimore Citizen’s Award, National Federation of the Blind Service Award, Children’s Cancer Center Volunteer Award, Heart of Love Award, Emmanuel C.C. Church Living Legends award and the Harlow Fullwood Award.

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State freshman Patrick Cole earned his third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honor the league announced on Monday.

Cole averaged 23.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game against Hampton and North Carolina Central.

He scored a career-high 29 points, including making two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining in overtime, to lead the Eagles to a 67-65 victory at Hampton. He was 9-of-17 from the floor and made 7-of-8 free throw attempts.

Cole then scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds at North Carolina Central.

He also shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the free throw line in the two games.

Cole previously won the award on Nov. 12 and Nov. 16.
