Five Towson football players named to College Sports Journal All-America Team

Posted on 28 January 2014 by WNST Staff

Terrance West Honored As CSJ Offensive Player of the Year

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Led by junior running running back Terrance West (Northwestern H.S./Baltimore, Md.), five members of the NCAA FCS runner-up Towson University football team were named to the FCS All-America team, selected by the College Sports Journal.

A consensus first team All-American, West was named as the CSJ Offensive Player of the Year. Also named as the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year, West led the Tigers to a 13-3 record and a berth in the NCAA FCS championship game by rushing for an NCAA FCS record 2,509 yards with an FCS record 41 rushing touchdowns.

Senior tackle Eric Pike (DuVal H.S./Landover, Md.), sophomore fullback Emmanuel Holder (Calvert Hall H.S./Baltimore, Md.), senior cornerback Jordan Love (Deep Run H.S./Washington, D.C.) and junior cornerbackTye Smith (Wakefield H.S./Raleigh, N.C.) were also named to the 63-member All-America team. Senior linebacker Telvion Clark (Granby H.S./Norfolk, Va.) earned honorable mention All-America notice.

West’s 42 total touchdowns and 252 points were both NCAA FCS single season records, breaking two marks held by Omar Cuff of Delaware. When West scampered for 354 yards on 29 carries in a 49-39 NCAA FCS quarterfinal win over Eastern Illinois in a snow storm, it shattered the standard for FCS single-game playoff rushing yards previously held by Adrian Peterson of Georgia Southern (333 rushing yards, set in 1999 against Massachusetts).

A 6-5, 298-pount tackle, Pike earned first team All-CAA honors as a junior and senior. He was a third team All-CAA selection in 2011 when he was a sophomore. A two-year co-captain, Pike set a school record by playing in 50 career games. He also started every game of his college career.

A first team All-CAA selection, Holder caught 16 passes for 172 yards and scored three touchdowns this season. An outstanding blocker, he is a two-year starter at fullback who was a Freshman All-American selection last year.

A starter in 13 of 14 games, Love earned first team All-CAA honors this season. He ranked seventh on the team with 64 tackles. He also ranked second on the team by breaking up 10 passes.

A second team All-CAA selection, Smith is a three-year starter. He made 103 tackles this season, third on the team. Smith also led the Tigers by breaking up 12 passes. He also intercepted two passes and forced two fumbles.

A two-time selection as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week, Clark earned first team All-CAA notice. He led the Tigers with 145 tackles and made 10.5 tackles for lost yardage. He led the CAA with five forced fumbles and he had three fumble recoveries. Clark also had 4.5 sacks.

National champion North Dakota State led all teams with six players on the CSJ All-America team and one additional athlete on the honorable mention team for a total of seven honorees. NCAA FCS runner-up Towson was second with five players on the 63-man squad and one more honorable mention pick for a total of six honorees.

Two Towson football players pick up freshman All-America honors

Posted on 18 January 2014 by WNST Staff

Tiger Freshmen Led Towson To National Championship Game

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Running back Darius Victor (Northwestern H.S./Hyattsville, Md.) and wide receiver Andre Dessenberg (Green Lakes H.S./Virginia Beach, Va.) of the Towson University football team have been named to The College Sports Journal’s Freshman All-America team.

Victor and Dessenberg helped the Tigers post the best season in program history. The Tigers, who compiled a 13-3 record, reached the NCAA FCS championship game where they lost to North Dakota State. Towson was ranked second in the nation in the final polls.

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp of Eastern Washington University was named as the winner of the third annual College Sports Journal FCS All-Freshman team player of the year. He joins running back Terrance West of Towson (2011) and the duo of Villanova quarterback John Robertson (2012) and Appalachian State wide receiver Sean Price (2012) as winners of CSJ’s top freshman award.

Victor earned first team Freshman All-America notice while Dessenberg was a second team selection.

Named as the winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Freshman of the Year award, Victor helped the Tigers was the team’s second-leading rusher. He ran for 629 yards on 98 carries and led the CAA by averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He also caught five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.

In the Tigers’ post-season run to the NCAA FCS championship game, Victor rushed for 219 yards on 33 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 52 yards and scored a touchdown.

Dessenberg appeared in 15 games and started four times. He caught 18 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 16.9 yards per catch, second on the team.

He was even more effective in the post-season. With injuries depleting the Tigers’ ranks, he stepped up and led the Tigers’ receivers with 13 receptions for 218 yards and a touchdown. He caught a 46-yard touchdown pass in Towson’s win over Fordham in the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs.

Overall, the Southern Conference led all leagues with 11 selections.
