Fantasy Flavor Week 2 Start Rankings: QB, RB & D/ST

Posted on 17 September 2010 by Thyrl Nelson

Week two is here and with it, hopefully a little more clarity as to what to expect defensively from week to week from the opponents of your fantasy players. Here are the first half of the Fantasy Flavor Week 2 Formulary Start Rankings, with wide receivers, tight ends and kickers to follow tomorrow.

Here’s the explanation of the “formula” and how to use the rankings. First, I rank the players at every position, at least 75 RBs, at least 100 WRs, at least 60 TEs, and every projected starter at the other positions based on their performance so far, expectations going forward, workload, health etc. Then I number them by 2′s (2,4,6,8). After that I rank the defenses, mostly using ESPN’s points against rankings, with minor adjustments for injuries, anomalies and my gut.  Those rankins are numbered 1-32. By adding the two numbers together, you come up with the “formulary” #, lowest possible is 3. It’s 2 part player expectations, 1 part defensive expectations against that player’s position, all against my best effort to gauge their projections against what could best be described as the equivalent of the baseball RP.

Now the disclaimer, since the body of work is small at this point, a lot of the expectations, especially defensively are based on last year’s performance, again, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies, changes in workload and my old gut.

In shorter terms, it’s not gospel. It is though, and interesting guideline, fairly accurate historically, and one more resource to use when contemplating tough decisions, looking for sleepers or searching for bye week help.

As always, keep an eye on the injury reports and make adjustments as you see fit, and most of all have fun. If you aren’t having fun playing fantasy football, you’re doing it wrong.

Blog & Tackle: Week 1 NFL scoring struggles

Posted on 14 September 2010 by Chris Pika

If you thought the amount of scoring in the NFL’s Week 1 games was less than usual, you were right in a big way. A total of 21 teams scored less than 20 points in the 16 games — that number was the highest total of Week 1 sub-20-point team scoring since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, according to research through Pro-Football-Reference.com.

The 2010 teams under 20 points? Minnesota 9, New Orleans 14, Cleveland 14, Tampa Bay 17, Miami 15, Buffalo 16, Denver 17, Atlanta 9, Pittsburgh 15, Oakland 13, Carolina 18, Detroit 14, Chicago 19, Arizona 17, St. Louis 13, San Francisco 6, Dallas 7, Washington 13, Baltimore 10, New York Jets 9 and San Diego 14. The league, as a whole, averaged just 18.3 points per team in Week 1.

Here are the year-by-year teams scoring 19 points or less in Week 1 from 1970-2009 (via Pro-Football-Reference.com.

The 21 teams was a far cry from last season’s Week 1 total of only 14 teams. In the decade of the 2000s, 153 teams scored under the 20-point mark in Week 1, an average of 15.3 per season. Since the NFL expanded to 32 teams and eight divisions in 2002 for 16 opening weekend games, the average was 15.25 per season from 2002-09.

There are a lot of factors at play in why this was the case in this particular opening weekend. Better defenses, weather issues and injuries to key players certainly played a part. But one other factor might also be in play.

The last time most clubs play their starters for an appreciable time in the preseason is Week 3. Most clubs hold out starters or play them very little (one or two series) in the final week in order to look at players fighting for the final spots during the remainder of the game.

It’s almost a bye week for the starters on both sides of the ball, since they will not face live competition for two weeks until the regular season starts. So, when the starters get back on the field in Week 1 of the regular season, the timing is off when it needs to be at its sharpest.

Here are the year-by-year totals of Week 1 teams at or under 19 points in the decade of the 2000s.

Fantasy Football Week 16 Start Rankings

Fantasy Football Week 16 Start Rankings

Posted on 23 December 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

It’s week 16 already, and the palpable excitement created by the approaching playoffs is quelled only by the thought of the season being nearly over. And indeed for most fantasy leagues, week 16 marks the end of the road. The end of the road that is for those fortunate enough to have their hopes still intact at this late stage in the game.

Since most leagues are wrapping up this week, there won’t be any rankings next week, but for those with leagues playing through week 17, feel free to email any questions to thyrl@wnst.net or to my Twitter account.

With 2 weeks remaining in the season, there are still 2 more opportunities to save your fantasy season, or to add the icing to your fantasy cake in WNST’s fantasy football contest. The money is being paid out to the 3 highest single week scores, so you still have 2 very realistic opportunities to walk away with either $1250, $750 or $500. It’s free to play, so go there now and take your last 2 shots at the money.

Congrats to Karensteam, for coming in with the highest score for week 15. Unfortunately, her 169 points weren’t enough to breach the top 3, where Ravenators still reigns with 209 points, followed by Hardballers with 207 points, and Cheesesteak Dave’s Vagabonds with 201. Those are tough scores, but all beatable, so go take your shot.

And here are the final rankings of the season, along with your final reminder that the rankings aren’t an inducement to do anything crazy in your drafted leagues, but rather a helpful tool to lean on when looking for help on the waiver wire, or bargains in a salary cap league, like ours here at WNST.

As always, keep an eye on the injury report, trust your gut, good luck, and have fun. If fantasy football isn’t fun, you’re doing it wrong, regardless of the stakes.

Fantasy Football Week 15 Start Rankings

Posted on 16 December 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Week 15 is here, and for those lucky enough to still have something to play for, we’re down to the nitty-gritty. For those who haven’t seen their fantasy seasons pan out as well as they had hoped, there’s still a couple of chances to salvage your football season in general here at wnst.net.

You still have weeks 15, 16 and 17 to put in a winning lineup and claim your share of $2500 in cash in our fantasy football game, and now we’ve added a college football pick ‘em contest too.

The college bowls begin on Saturday, so make sure to get your picks in by then. And the NFL has both Thursday and Saturday games this week too, so make your lineup adjustments accordingly and on time.

For those who needed just one more reason to take a shot at our fantasy football game, look no further than last week’s results. Hard Ballers came up with 207 points in week 14, landing him in second place with just 3 weeks remaining, and Cheesesteak Dave’s Vagabonds came in with 201 points and a spot in 3rd place. And Ravenators, with 209 points, still holds the top spot with just 3 weeks left.

So here are the week 15 rankings, with the usual reminder that it’s not an inducement to do anything crazy, to keep and eye on the injury reports, trust your gut and have fun. If it’s not fun, you’re doing it wrong, regardless of the stakes.

Fantasy Football Week 14 Start Rankings

Posted on 09 December 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Week 14 is almost here, and for some that means the start of the playoffs, for others it means that last push to get into the playoffs, and for the rest, there are still just four chances left to salvage your season, and walk away with some money in WNST’s salary cap Fantasy Football game.

Congrats to Mikey’s Canes, for coming up with the top score for this week. Unfortunately for him, his 166 points weren’t enough to unseat any of the top 3 spots; currently held by Ravenators with 209 points, and PlayLikeARaven and goobirds who remain tied at 195 points. Since the money is going out to the highest single week scores, there’s still time to unseat the leaders and claim your share of the money. While you’re there, take a shot at WNST’s new College Bowl Pick ‘Em contest too.

Remember also, that the Steelers are traveling to the Browns for Thursday night football, in what could be an ugly offensive game; make your lineup adjustments accordingly. And of course, as always, watch the injury report, good luck, and have fun. If Fantasy Football isn’t fun, you’re doing it wrong.

Lastly, and especially important now that the season is winding down and the stakes are going up, remember that the rankings aren’t an inducement to do anything crazy, like sitting Peyton Mannning. They’re a formulary rating, based on the player’s performance so far this season, and the match up before that player this week, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies and changes in role. The formulary numbers are in parentheses after each player, with the lowest numbers being best.

Fantasy Football Week 13 Start Rankings

Posted on 02 December 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Week 13 is upon us already, and with it comes the stretch run to the playoffs; and this looks like a good week for offense in general. Don’t forget that the Jets are playing the Bills in Toronto on Thursday night, in a game that you probably don’t want a quarterback in, but where there could be a couple of interesting possibilities at running back.

If you’re on the outside looking in when it comes to your own league playoffs, there’s good news for you still. That’s because WNST has a free salary cap league, with $2500 in cash being split 3 ways for the highest single week scores. That means that even if you haven’t entered yet, you still have 5 chances to submit a winning lineup here and possibly win some serious cash.

Congrats to Buddy Lee 97, for putting up 163 points this week, and the highest score for week 12. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to get into the money, where Ravenators still sits in first place with 209 points, followed by PlayLikeARaven and Goobirds, who remain tied for second at 195 points. With 5 more chances at the money, there’s still a chance to save your fantasy season. And did I mention that this should be a good week for offense?

So here are this week’s formulary rankings. Remember that they’re 2 parts player performance, and one-part defensive expectations against them, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies and changes in role. Also remember that they’re not an inducement to do anything crazy, just an aid for tough lineup decisions or when looking for help on the wire.

As always, keep an eye on the injury report, have fun and good luck.

Fantasy Football Week 12 Start Rankings

Posted on 25 November 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Week 12 is here, and with it comes the unfortunate realization that the fantasy football season is mostly in the books already. For some unfortunately, the look ahead to next season has begun already. If that’s the case for you, allow me to remind you that there are still 6 weeks remaining in the WNST salary cap fantasy football game. That means that there are 6 fresh chances to make this fantasy season a positive one. Since the money is going to the 3 highest single week scores, you’re no further out of the money today than anyone outside of the current top 3. Those 3 by the way are still Ravenators in 1st with 209 points, and goobirds and PlayLikeARaven tied for second with 195 points. Eclipsing either of those scores would position you squarely in the money. So what are you waiting for?

Congrats as well to dens team, who came in with the highest score for week 11, although it wasn’t enough to get them into the money, they too have 6 more shots at winning.

Also, a reminder that there’s an extra heavy dose of Thursday football this week; with the Cowboys and Lions hosting their usual Thanksgiving Day games, against the Raiders and Packers this year, respectively. And in the Thursday nightcap, the Giants will travel to Denver to face the Broncos, in a game that someone is bound to win. Don’t forget to make your lineup adjustments early. And as always, watch the injury report, trust your gut, and have fun. If it’s not fun, you’re doing it wrong.

Here are this week’s rankings, with a reminder that they’re formulary; two parts player performance, one part defensive expectations, with minor adjustments for injuries, anomalies and changes in role. The formulary numbers are listed in parentheses behind each player, with the lower numbers being best. The lowest possible number is 3.

Fantasy Football Week 11 Start Rankings

Posted on 18 November 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Here are the Fantasy Football start rankings for week 11, along with the usual reminders.

Reminder #1: Don’t forget that Thursday night football is back for the rest of the fantasy season. The Dolphins are playing the Panthers on Thursday night, so make sure to have the appropriate lineup adjustments in by then.

Reminder #2: The rankings are mathematical, based on 2-parts individual player performance and 1-part defensive expectations against them, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies and role-changes.

Reminder #3: There are still plenty of opportunities for you to submit the highest scoring single week lineup in WNST’s salary cap fantasy football game, and walk away with some pretty serious cash. Congrats to the G-Men who came in with the highest single week score for week 10. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to unseat Ravenators, Goobirds or PlayLikeARaven, who still hold down the top 3 spots.

Reminder #4: The playoffs are coming, so every lineup decision is becoming more and more crucial. Remember that the rankings aren’t an inducement to do anything crazy. They’re more like a guide to help with tough lineup decisions, or to help find value on the waiver wire where necessary.

Reminder #5: Keep an eye on the injury reports, and have fun. If fantasy football isn’t fun, you’re doing it wrong. Good Luck.
