Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 08 June 2009 by Glenn Clark

The Orioles were terrible this weekend; but that will happen. Some teams are deep enough that when their best hitters aren’t hitting, they can come through-or pitching can carry them through. On the flip side, some teams are the Orioles.

I feel like Drew when I say this, but “I don’t know what else you want me to tell you.”

They’re really bad.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say……

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-It is a shame to see the LPGA Championship leaving Havre De Grace (or is that Aberdeen up there?) after this weekend. I don’t really care much about the event itself; and I certainly don’t plan on attending, but I support the idea of having major events in the area. Hopefully Terry Hasseltine is working to bring other major events to the area to replace the LPGA Championship, Tiger Woods’ event, and the Dew Action Sports Tour; which have all left or are leaving since his office was created. A single soccer match is nice-very nice even-but does not replace all of those events.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 02 June 2009 by Glenn Clark

It’s June now, and I just noticed something. No one is really asking about which Orioles players should be on the trading block.

I mean, Drew has tossed around the idea of trading Aubrey Huff or Jeremy Guthrie if things went the right way; but we’re not hearing the annual “is there anyone on this team you consider off limits?” discussion we’re used to.

It’s actually quite pleasant.

Belmont Loses Buzz with Rachel Alexandra Out

Posted on 29 May 2009 by Glenn Clark

It is always a shame to me to watch the scene at a Belmont Stakes where there is no Triple Crown on the line. It feels as though all of the energy is out of the race; which is supposed to be amongst the most prestigious in the entire sport.

I vividly remember 2006; when an injury to Barbaro in the Preakness left the Belmont with ABSOLUTELY no juice; and left ESPN scrambling to figure out how to cover the event. It became shameful to watch the broadcast; as the race became 2nd fiddle to Jeremy Schaap’s live reports from Barbaro’s stall at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA. Does anyone remember who won the race? (The answer is Jazil).

But there was something about the excitement heading into this year’s Belmont Stakes that made it almost as exciting as a legitimate Triple Crown threat to me. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird vs. Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra-the ultimate Battle of the Sexes in the longest race of the Triple Crown. Horse of the Year likely on the line for either should they win. Calvin Borel going for the personal sweep of the Triple Crown-against the horse he rode to the most improbable of the 3.

So it’s an absolute shame to hear that Jess Jackson won’t be running the filly in the June 6 race.

It isn’t as if I don’t understand the circumstances. After blowing away the field in the Kentucky Oaks and holding off Mine That Bird down the stretch at Pimlico; there really isn’t anything left to prove with Rachel Alexandra. She can’t win the Triple Crown; and she’s going to be just as valuable to her connections without the Belmont win as she would with it.

But horse racing could certainly have used another week-ten days of the buzz that her involvement would have provided.

Borel will still get the chance to sweep the Triple Crown; as he returns to his completely improbable Derby winner. But he’ll be going against a field that lacks star power-with no offense to Chocolate Candy, Dunkirk, or Mr. Hot Stuff. A Borel win would still be a remarkable story; one that I truly believe deserves consideration for SI’s Sportsman of the Year.

Even with that, there will certainly be some amongst the New York Racing Association (NYRA) who spend their week thinking “What if?”

I know I certainly will.

The excitement tonight is for all of us. But don’t get carried away.

Matt Wieters alone does NOT make the Orioles a playoff team……certainly not yet anyway.

But this IS a major piece in what we can only hope will be a major change in the organization.

Enjoy this tonight. TRY to keep it in perspective though.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 28 May 2009 by Glenn Clark

It will be all too easy for MASN to make yesterday’s game a future “Defining Moment.”

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Orioles are not playoff contenders.

But yesterday was about as much fun as I’ve had watching an Orioles game as I can remember. I was at Padonia Station yesterday afternoon to watch the UEFA Champions League final; and a ton of fans stuck around after the soccer game to watch the Orioles’ rally.

It was surreal. Down 8-3, then down 10-8, then the Reimold homer.

Watching the game with a crowd of people; it was a special feel.

But it wasn’t a franchise turner. This organization is still well away from that. Let’s not get carried away.

And let’s see what everyone else has to say…..
