The UMBC men’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 schedule as they host Eastern (Pa.) University on Monday, Nov. 11 at the RAC Arena. It is the second consecutive year that good friends Aki Thomas and former Retriever assistant Nate Stewart will be on opposite sidelines to open UMBC’s home schedule. UMBC defeated the Eagles, 70-52, on Nov. 12, 2012, as senior post Brett Roseboro and sophomore wing Malik Garner each contributed 10 points .The game is the nightcap of a hoops doubleheader versus Eastern and will tip at 7:30 p.m.
In the season opener on Nov. 8, the Retrievers battled Pac-12 Arizona State competitively for 30 minutes, but could not overcome late game shooting woes and fell, 96-61, at Wells Fargo Arena. Freshman guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) got the start for an injured Quentin Jones at the point guard slot and co-led a balanced UMBC offense with 12 points. Sophomore Malik Garner also scored a career-high 12. Roseboro led UMBC with nine rebounds.
This will be the first contest of the season for Eastern. The Eagles were 6-19 a season ago (not counting the loss to UMBC). Guard Anthony Parenti averaged a team-best 10.5 points per game for Eastern a year ago. Eastern averaged 61.5 points per game and permitted 69.8 a season ago.
UMBC meets American in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Nov. 14 and returns home to welcome Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday, Nov. 17.
