Fantasy Football Week 12 Start Rankings

Posted on 25 November 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Week 12 is here, and with it comes the unfortunate realization that the fantasy football season is mostly in the books already. For some unfortunately, the look ahead to next season has begun already. If that’s the case for you, allow me to remind you that there are still 6 weeks remaining in the WNST salary cap fantasy football game. That means that there are 6 fresh chances to make this fantasy season a positive one. Since the money is going to the 3 highest single week scores, you’re no further out of the money today than anyone outside of the current top 3. Those 3 by the way are still Ravenators in 1st with 209 points, and goobirds and PlayLikeARaven tied for second with 195 points. Eclipsing either of those scores would position you squarely in the money. So what are you waiting for?

Congrats as well to dens team, who came in with the highest score for week 11, although it wasn’t enough to get them into the money, they too have 6 more shots at winning.

Also, a reminder that there’s an extra heavy dose of Thursday football this week; with the Cowboys and Lions hosting their usual Thanksgiving Day games, against the Raiders and Packers this year, respectively. And in the Thursday nightcap, the Giants will travel to Denver to face the Broncos, in a game that someone is bound to win. Don’t forget to make your lineup adjustments early. And as always, watch the injury report, trust your gut, and have fun. If it’s not fun, you’re doing it wrong.

Here are this week’s rankings, with a reminder that they’re formulary; two parts player performance, one part defensive expectations, with minor adjustments for injuries, anomalies and changes in role. The formulary numbers are listed in parentheses behind each player, with the lower numbers being best. The lowest possible number is 3.

Fantasy Football Week 11 Start Rankings

Posted on 18 November 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Here are the Fantasy Football start rankings for week 11, along with the usual reminders.

Reminder #1: Don’t forget that Thursday night football is back for the rest of the fantasy season. The Dolphins are playing the Panthers on Thursday night, so make sure to have the appropriate lineup adjustments in by then.

Reminder #2: The rankings are mathematical, based on 2-parts individual player performance and 1-part defensive expectations against them, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies and role-changes.

Reminder #3: There are still plenty of opportunities for you to submit the highest scoring single week lineup in WNST’s salary cap fantasy football game, and walk away with some pretty serious cash. Congrats to the G-Men who came in with the highest single week score for week 10. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to unseat Ravenators, Goobirds or PlayLikeARaven, who still hold down the top 3 spots.

Reminder #4: The playoffs are coming, so every lineup decision is becoming more and more crucial. Remember that the rankings aren’t an inducement to do anything crazy. They’re more like a guide to help with tough lineup decisions, or to help find value on the waiver wire where necessary.

Reminder #5: Keep an eye on the injury reports, and have fun. If fantasy football isn’t fun, you’re doing it wrong. Good Luck.

Andy Behrens is next up to give some fantasy advice. He tells us to avoid Kyle Orton. Orton always sticks with short passes rather than taking chances down the field. He also explains that Mike Bell should sit this week after getting so few carries last game.

Suzy Kolber, the sideline reporter for ESPN Monday Night Football is next up. She states that if the Ravens are unable to defeat the Browns on Monday night the season is essentially over for them. Kolber next talks about the rapid decline of the Browns. She mentions the high expectations for the team last year and how the team has never been close to reaching them. She also discusses the protest planned for the game. She believes that it would be a good thing for the organization if the fans are truly able to make a statement. She moves on to the goals for the rest of her career. She has always dreamed of covering the Olympics.

9:15-

Brian Billick now joins us. He will be at the Philadelphia-San Diego game this weekend. The Chargers appear to have turned their season around. Both teams are 5-3 and second in their divisions. Each will be looking to make a statement win. Brian next talks about how the Ravens coaching staff must focus the team for a game against a lesser opponent. It is important to keep every aspect of preparation the same as any other week. We seem to be having some problems keeping Brian on the line so his segment will be cut short this week.

8:47-

Randy Monroe, the head coach of the UMBC basketball team is the next guest. He begins by talking about how his team will face a tough opponent in their first game, playing Morgan State on Sunday. He explains that although many teams start off by facing cupcakes, it gives his team a valuable test early on. He next describes how his team will replace Jay Greene. Greene averaged over 12 points and 6 assists last season. The team will bring in two transfers. Chris De La Rosa from Sienna and Robbie Jackson from Marshall will both be counted on to make and impact this year. On his chances of making a run at the American East championship, Monroe explains that the league is always “topsy-turvy” and every team has a chance at the title.

8:38-

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com is on to talk some football with Drew. He talks about the various coaches that will be available this season. He points out that some positions are much more attractive than others. For example, the Cleveland Browns possible opening is one that an established coach would more than likely not look into. He also discusses the probability that the next NFL season will be uncapped.

7:44-

Virginia Tech football analyst, Mike Burnop is on to talk about the team’s upcoming game against the University of Maryland. He starts off by discussing Tech’s up-and-down season. The season has been disappointing because of the high expectations placed on the team in the preseason. Tech is just a few plays away from being in a much better position, possibly with only one loss. Because of some of these disappointments, Burnop believes the Hokies will come out ready to play against the Terps. Burnop moves on to the disparity between the two divisions of the ACC this season. The Coastal division has been clearly strong this year.

Fantasy Football Week 10 Start Rankings

Posted on 11 November 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

This is the last week for NFL byes, and with just 2 in store for this week the depth has been mostly restored to fantasy talent pools. So now comes the next challenge for fantasy owners to embrace, Thursday Night Football. Don’t forget that the Bears are playing in San Francisco on Thursday, so make sure to have any necessary roster changes in by then.

While not particularly glamorous from a fantasy perspective, or an entertainment perspective either for that matter, Bears vs. Niners actually appears to have some pretty good potential starts. Be cautious with those expectations though, good defense usually has an easy time with good offense in the extra short week that’s necessary for a Thursday game, and road teams in particular seem to have sync issues on Thursdays. Still, I’m not sure that either of these teams is capable of playing very good defense, and the match up could bring out the best in both teams. Styles do make fights.

Speaking of styles making fights, WNST’s salary cap version of fantasy football allows you to not only change your entire team every week, you can change your whole offensive philosophy weekly if you’d like. You can use a traditional offense, a run and shoot, wide receiver heavy offense, or a power I, running back heavy attack if you’d like. And you can change your approach and your entire roster from week-to-week if you’d like. There’s $2500 in cash prizes being split between the top 3 single week scores, so even if you haven’t entered yet, there’s still a good chance at winning, and with less than 500 people currently playing, you have to like your odds. Did I mention that it’s free to play too?

Congrats to CanYouHearMeNow?, who came in with 184 points, and the highest single week score for week 9. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to crack the top 3, where Ravenators still sits in first place with 209 points, followed by PlayLikeARaven and goobirds, who remain tied for second with 195 points.

So here are the rankings, and a reminder that they’re not an inducement to do anything crazy. They’re formulary, based mostly on player performance, with defensive expectations factored in, and minor adjustments for injuries, anomalies and changes in role. As always, keep an eye on the injury report, have fun and of course, Good Luck.

Fantasy Football Week 9 Start Rankings

Posted on 04 November 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Here are the formulary start rankings for week 9. We are almost through the bye weeks, with six on tap for this week, and only two remaining thereafter. The rankings are mathematical with 2-parts based on individual player performance, and 1-part based on defensive expectations against that player. Remember that these aren’t an inducement to do anything crazy (like starting Alex Smith over Drew Brees as the rankings might suggest), instead, they’re a handy guide to help with some tough lineup decisions, or to find someone on the waiver wire if necessary to fill a need.

Remember too, that if your regular team has you disappointed so far this season, there’s a perfect opportunity to get competitive again in fantasy football, by entering WNST’s salary cap game. It’s free to play, and there’s big money being given out to the 3 highest single week scores. So you still have a very realistic shot at the money, even if you still haven’t signed up yet.

Congrats to Natty and Spoon 1231, who each had 157 points in week 8, tying them for the top spot this week. Unfortunately for them, neither was able to break into the top 3 weekly scores for the year, where Ravenators still sits in 1st place with 209 points, followed by goobirds and PlayLikeARaven who are still tied in 2nd with 195 points.

There are still 9 more chances for you to submit the winning lineup, so why not go there right now? In addition to changing your whole team each week if you’d like, you can also change your entire offensive philosophy if you’d like. There’s the traditional 2 running back, 3 wide receiver and 1 tight end set. Or you can go run and shoot, with no running backs, 1 tight end and 5 wide receivers; or you can go with my favorite, the power I formation, with no wide receivers, 4 running backs and 2 tight ends. However you choose to attack it, there’s cash to be had, so go there now.

And as always, good luck, keep an eye on the injury report, and most importantly have fun. If you’re not having fun playing fantasy football, regardless of the stakes, then you’re not doing it right; rethink your approach.

Comcast Morning Show Live Blog (10/30/09)

Posted on 30 October 2009 by Jack McManus

9:49-

Andy Behrens is on to give his weekly fantasy advice. Make sure you check out Andy’s blog to get his in-depth fantasy analysis and positional rankings.

9:32-

Yet another caller is on and guarantees a Ravens’ win as well. He will sing with Drew on Monday if the team loses. He also signs “Score, Ravens, Score” for us.

9:26-

Another caller states that the Broncos game is a “must win.” This is because of the “can’t win” games on the schedule. He explains that there is no way the Ravens will defeat the Colts this season.

9:23-

A fan calls in to talk about the Orioles’ decision to decline the option on Melvin Mora. He believes the team made the correct decision in this case. He also expresses his concern regarding the Ravens game this weekend. He does not see how the secondary can contain the Broncos’ passing game.

9:10-

Drew guarantees a Ravens win on Sunday. If they lose he will sing the Broncos’ fight song on Monday morning.

8:53-

Broncos sideline reporter Alan Roach is next up to talk about the Ravens-Broncos game. He explains that the Broncos are winning using a simple style of football. Kyle Orton has thrown only one interception this season and it occurred on a Hail Mary pass. The Broncos also have used all of their offseason acquisition, including Mike Nolan to improved the defense. He next talks about how Josh McDaniels has had the perfect start for a rookie head coach. It began with the last second win over the Bengals in Week 1.  Roach next brings up Brandon Marshall who is a big, strong, and physical wide receiver and could present a huge matchup problem for the Ravens secondary.

8:38-

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com is on with Drew. He begins by discussing the rumors about the sale of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It appears that these are just that, rumors. He next talks about the Vikings-Packers game. He states that Brett Favre must keep his emotions in check if the Vikings want to win the game. Florio moves on to how the AFC has many teams with middle-of-the-road records this season. He explains that this is normally the case in the NFC, but not this year. He states that the Ravens have the best chance to break out from this group of teams. Florio next describes Vince Young’s situation. Young has gone down a very odd path. His career was derailed one afternoon and he is finally being given the chance.

favre

8:12-

It’s time for Cheap Shots from the Bleachers. Glenn starts off by bring up how Hereford High School was cost the Boys’ Cross Country County Championship because of the stitching on one of the runner’s undergarments. The runner finished in fourth place and his disqualification dropped the Bulls into second behind Towson (my school by the way). Glenn states that the officials should tell the runners that they have uniform violations before the race begins. He goes on to say that regardless of the rule, a student should not have to run the race and then be disqualified. Drew also had planned to take a cheap shot about the same event. He adds on that some schools were told that runners had uniform violations. He explains that common sense would make sure that a team is not penalized if it was not checked prior to the race while other teams were.

7:33-

A caller brings up the idea of Peter Angelos moving the Orioles to another city. He agrees with Drew that if the city was promised a new team in a few years (like the Browns) it would be fine. The caller puts some blame on the politicians of the city for not putting pressure on Angelos to field a quality team.

Fantasy Football Week 8 Start Rankings

Posted on 28 October 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Here are the formulary Fantasy Football start rankings for week 8. We are almost through the byes, and there are a number of interesting plays this week to say the least, that could help you through the few remaining bye weeks.

As always the rankings are based on 2 parts players performance, and one-part defensive expectations against that player. The lower numbers are better, with a best possible formulary number of 3. Those numbers are listed in parentheses behind each pick.

Congrats to PlayLikeARaven, who racked up 195 points and the top weekly score in the WNST fantasy football game. PlayLikeARaven also positioned himself into a second place tie with goobirds in the money rankings, while Ravenators remains in first with a 209-point week. Remember that the money is going to the highest single week scorer, so there is still plenty of time left for you to get entered, and still have a realistic shot at the money.

As always, good luck, have fun, and keep an eye on the injury report.

9:49-

Andy Behrens is on to offer his weekly fantasy advice. He tells me that Lance Moore is an obvious start this week and to stay away from Terrell Owens. He also tells me to start Brent Celek over Vernon Davis and that only one tight end is needed. He advises Glenn to start Steve Breaston and Leon Washington.

9:07-

Y.A. Tittle, author of the new book Nothing Comes Easy is the next guest. He talks about how he broke into football by starting off in Baltimore. He explains that constant questions from fans prompted Tittle to decided to write the book. He says that today he follows both the Giants and the 49ers. He next talks about the difference between the game today versus when he played. He believes the main difference is the physical attributes of the players. Players today begin training much earlier in life. This is an all-time-great interview segment by the way, so please check it out in the audio vault.

Here is Drew’s idea for the new Chicago Bears logo.

8:32-

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com is next up to talk some football. He starts off by talking about rumor that Joe Gibbs may be returning to Washington. He moves on to how certain teams always seem to make good coaching hires and others cannot seem to do so. Florio believes that Steve Spagnuolo will eventually be a good coach, if he is given the opportunity. He also speaks on the Tom Cable situation. The fact that Randy Hanson will most likely sue will make sure the news does not go away.

8:17-

Randy Cross is on with Drew. He will be in the booth for the Navy-Wake Forest match-up tomorrow. Cross was at the Texans game last weekend. He explains how right now the team is very inconsistent. If the defense can continue to play at a high level they could be a problem for a lot of good teams this season. On the other side of the game, Cross states that he does not yet believe in the Cincinnati Bengals. He is also unsure of the NFC West teams (Cardinals and 49ers). In regards to the Ravens, Cross thinks the Ravens still have a chance to win the division.

This morning we are discussing “lightning in a bottle.” Some of the best suggestions so far have been George Mason and Derek Anderson.

Fantasy Football Week 7 Start Rankings

Posted on 21 October 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Week 6 was a big one for offense, despite a number of noteworthy byes. Hopefully some of that scoring mojo will continue into week 7, as there are 6 byes on tap for this week’s action. The number of gigantic week 6 performances served to boost a lot of teams, while on the other side of that coin, a number of owners likely saw huge efforts wasted in losing causes too.

There was a big shakeup in the WNST Fantasy football rankings last week too, as week 6 opened the door for the top 5 scoring performances of the season so far. Congrats to Ravenators, who currently sit in first place with 209 points, followed by Goobirds in 2nd with 195 points, and RavenCanes moved into 3rd place with 190 points.

Remember that the money goes to the highest single week scorers, so that means that you still have 11 chances left to submit a winning lineup. And by now, I’m guessing that a lot of you are feeling let down by the teams that you drafted. This is a nice way to get back the excitement of competitive fantasy football, as each week provides you with a fresh opportunity to win real money.

So without further ado, here are the week 7 Fantasy Flavor Formulary Rankings. The results are generated mathematically using 2 parts player performance, and one-part defensive expectations, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies and changes in playing time. The formulary numbers are listed in parentheses behind each player, with the lower numbers being better and a lowest possible number of 3.

As always, keep an eye on the injury reports, good luck, and remember to have fun. If you aren’t having fun playing fantasy football, you’re simply doing it wrong.

Fantasy Football Week 6 Start Rankings

Posted on 14 October 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

Here are the position-by-position start rankings for week 6. The formula is based on 2-parts player expectations, and 1-part based on the expectations of the defense that’s going against the player this week. The formulary numbers are in parentheses behind each pick, the lower the better, with a lowest possible rating of 3.

As always, keep an eye on the injury report, trust your gut, and have fun, that’s the whole point.

There are also still 12 chances remaining to submit your own winning entry, in the WNST salary cap game. The prizes are going out to the highest single week scores, so even if you aren’t entered yet, there’s still a very realistic shot at winning. The prizes are $1250 for 1st, $750 for 2nd and $500 for 3rd. It’ll take you 5 minutes to sign up and cost you nothing. So, what are you waiting for?

Congrats to Washingtim, who led all scorers last week with 169 points. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to unseat Talleshortz or WinningComesEasy89, who are still tied for first with 189 points, or Hobos, in third with 179 points.
