Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 13 September 2011 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Auto Racing-NASCAR Geico 400 (Sunday 2pm from Joliet, IL live on ESPN), IndyCar Series Indy Japan 300 (Saturday 11:30pm from Motegi, Tochigi live on VERSUS); High School Football: Towson @ Perry Hall (Friday 7pm), Glen Burnie @ Northeast (Friday 6:30pm), Hereford @ Franklin (Friday 7pm); Tennis: Davis Cup-France @ Spain (Friday 6am Saturday 9am Sunday 6am from Cordoba, Spain live on Tennis Channel); NHL: Washington Capitals Rookie Camp (Tuesday & Wednesday 10:30am Kettler Capitals IcePlex)

10. Chris Brown/Kelly Rowland/T-Pain (Saturday 7pm Verizon Center); KEM (Saturday 6:30pm Pier Six Pavilion); Lupe Fiasco/Wale (Friday 5:30pm Merriweather Post Pavilion), HFStival feat. Avett Brothers, Flogging Molly, Gin Blossoms (Saturday 10am Merriweather Post Pavilion); Mr. Greengenes (Friday 6pm Power Plant Live); 10 Years (Friday 7:30pm Rams Head Live), Legwarmers (Saturday 7pm Rams Head Live); Mobb Deep (Sunday 8pm Baltimore Soundstage); Virginia Coalition (Friday 8pm 8×10 Club); Rhett Miller (Saturday 1pm Rams Head On Stage); Mary J. Blige (Thursday 7pm Fillmore Silver Spring), Bruce In The USA Bruce Springsteen Tribute (Friday 7pm Fillmore Silver Spring), John Legend (Saturday 7pm Fillmore Silver Spring), BlackStar (Sunday 7pm Fillmore Silver Spring)

I like Lupe Fiasco. I LOVE Wale. I love him even more for rapping about Terrapins QB Danny O’Brien…

The thing they’re doing at Merriweather CERTAINLY isn’t an HFStival (even the HFS people know that), but it would have been a semi-decent event if they had charged 15 bucks for tickets. The Avett Brothers are quite good…

And don’t you DARE say a negative word about the Gin Blossoms, who mean more to me than some family members…

I hate singing the praises of a DC rapper (Wale) and then following it up by praising an act from Northern Virginia (Virginia Coalition), but VACO is freaking awesome…

9. Maryland Wine Festival (Saturday & Sunday Carroll County Wine Museum); Monster-Mania Con (Friday-Sunday Hunt Valley Marriott); Second City: Charmed & Dangerous (Thursday-Sunday Center Stage); Maryland Renaissance Festival (Saturday & Sunday RennFest Fairgrounds Crownsville); “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 7 premieres (Thursday 10pm FX)

To be honest, the first couple of these things aren’t for me. The only wine I know I enjoy is Boordy Jazzberry, but I’m not sure they’d even have that out at the Wine Festival.

I’ve enjoyed a scary movie or two in my day, but the Monster thing…no thanks.

You already know I enjoy RennFest. If you don’t, you simply haven’t been paying attention to me swigging beer from goblets or throwing axes. I’m all in.

I saw Second City the last time they invaded Charm City. They were outstanding. I recommend going to see them.

But of all of these things, I’m ABSOLUTELY most excited about the new season of Always Sunny. WILD CARD!!!!

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Not everyone likes country music. But I like country music. At least country music when Little Big Town is playing it…

Mike Ness is one of the toughest dudes on the face of the planet. I feel like not only could he play a gig with Social D in Charm City this weekend, but he could possibly play safety for the Ravens as well if Dawan Landry were to get hurt…

Some people think it isn’t very manly to be a fan of The Script. To those people I say, “why in the hell would you have thought I was manly otherwise?”

Drew Forrester and I are going to see Ra Ra Riot Friday night in DC. I’m planning on telling everyone that my grandfather actually does have fairly decent taste in music.

9. World Championship Punkin Chunkin (Friday-Sunday Nassau, Delaware)

This is certainly outside the radius of what I would usually consider “local”, but it’s also awesome enough that I’m going to be forced to let it slide.

Seriously, how in the hell can you argue with an event like THIS?

8. Lingerie Football League: Orlando Fantasy @ Baltimore Charm (Friday 9pm 1st Mariner Arena)

I don’t consider myself an expert on the LFL by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like it has to be somewhat disappointing that the Charm have been outscored 93-6 in their first two games of the year.

That being said, I still like it would be unfair to label the team as 0-2 for the season. Mostly because that would mean we’re labeling anyone involved with the LFL as losers…

lfl

7. Pro Wrestling: TNA “Turning Point” (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View)

Mr. Anderson is facing Jeff Hardy at Turning Point for the strap. But that’s not what I’m most interested in. Instead, I’m much more interested in the match between the Motor City Machine Guns and Team 3D. Why? Because Team 3D is FREAKING AWESOME…

6. High School Football: Perry Hall @ Hereford (Friday 7pm), Glen Burnie @ Chesapeake-Anne Arundel County (Friday 6:30pm)

As always, my PHHS Gators are coming off a blowout win (56-15 over Milford Mill) and Forrester’s Gophers are coming off a blowout loss (44-6 to North County).

But Hereford is always a tricky trip for my Gators. Which bothers me, because there is no team I want to beat more than the Bulls every season.

Why’s that?

Picture a 14 year old Glenn Clark sitting in front of window at 6am…staring out at a thin layer of snow/ice and listening to Dave Durian on WBAL…

“Baltimore County Schools…two hours late…”

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DIDN’T DO ANY OF MY HOMEWORK LAST NIGHT AND I COULD REALLY USE ANOTHER 45 MINUTES OF SLEEP!!!!!!!

“…Hereford Zone only.”

WHAT?!?!?!?!? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So to my Gators…I don’t ask for much. But PLEASE. Win this for all of us who ever had to have our hearts broken by hearing the words “Hereford Zone only.”

Love, G.

5. NBA: Philadelphia 76ers @ Washington Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ New York Knicks (Friday 7:30pm from New York live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Cleveland Cavaliers @ Washington Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

Since the ‘Zards appear to stink again this year, thank God Ted Leonsis and company have a favorable schedule. I mean, not even two weeks into the season and they’re already getting a visit from LeBron James and the Cavs!

Oh. No? Well at least they have other good things going on in DC. For example…

grossman

Oh Thank God for Rex Grossman. He couldn’t happen to a better group of A-holes.

4. College Basketball: 2K Sports Classic-Seattle @ Maryland (Monday 8pm from Comcast Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Shepherd @ Loyola (Thursday 7pm Reitz Arena); Women’s College Basketball: Gallaudet @ Maryland (Tuesday 7pm Comcast Center), District of Columbia @ Maryland (Sunday 2pm Comcast Center)

Oh College Basketball how I love thee and how much I have missed thee.

Seriously-there are few things in life that I love HALF as much as I love College Basketball.

Off the top of my head, I’d say I love O.A.R., Chris Farley movies and Belgian Wheat beers as much as I love College Basketball. Nothing else.

Well….maybe this…

jello

3. College Football: Maryland @ Miami (Saturday 12pm from Miami live on ESPNU), Navy @ East Carolina (Saturday 3:30pm from Greenville, NC live on MASN)

Okay, I REALLY don’t think the Terrapins are that good.

I know they’re 6-2. I know they’re now 3-1 in the ACC. I know they just hung 62 points on Wake Forest. I know there’s a chance Jacory Harris might not play for the Hurricanes Saturday, and the ‘Canes just lost a game to effing Virginia ANYWAY.

I’m just still not convinced Ralph Friedgen’s Terps are THAT good. But I’ve been wrong before.

For example, I was told recently that there were some new pictures of a gal named Jarah Mariano that deserved a gander. My response was “I bet they’re not that great.”

I was wrong. (Thanks Guyism!)

jarah

2. Horse Racing: Breeders’ Cup (Friday 4pm live on ESPN2, Saturday 1:30pm live on ABC, Saturday 3:30pm live on ESPN. All racing from Louisville, KY)

I can’t believe I’m missing this.

There is NOTHING better than a big racing weekend at Churchill Downs.

Of course, I’m not so sure it’ll be quite the same without the Prince of Kentucky…

glennclark

1. NFL: Miami Dolphins @ Baltimore Ravens (Sunday 1pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on CBS)

It’s not that I’m NOT excited about the Ravens and Fins Sunday afternoon. Trust me, I’m PLENTY excited about it. It’s just that it’s hard to think about ANYTHING going on at “The Bank” right now as being even in the neighborhood of the importance of what will be going on there come June 22, 2011…

FREAKING.YES.

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Fantasy NASCAR Week 3 – $2500 Still Up For Grabs

Posted on 28 February 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

This is the second season for wnst.net and toyotaliveweb.com fantasy NASCAR, and likewise it’s my second season of following the sport and playing the game. If you haven’t signed up yet, I challenge you to do it, the link is right there on the right side of the front page. I challenge you to go there and sign up, take 5 minutes of your life and pick 10 racers. After that, watch the race on Sunday; it will be a nice distraction from all of the Ray Lewis debate. At least watch the last 50 laps, tune in sometime around 7:30 or so, if you won’t commit to the whole race. I guarantee, that once you have a reason to root for someone, you’ll enjoy the race. You may not enjoy it as much as football, baseball or basketball, or any other number of sports for that matter, but it is enjoyable.

As for the game, there are $2500 worth of cash prizes on the line, I know you’ll be interested in that. The winner will walk away with $1250, second place will get $750, and the third place winner will receive $500 in cash courtesy of toyotaliveweb.com and wnst.net.

Even better still, the winners will be the 3 highest single week scores, so you don’t have to be married to your team. Heck, you don’t even really have to know what you’re doing. And if you missed out on the first two races of the season, you’re still no further out of the money than our 2 current leaders.

Speaking of the leaders, congratulations to Broham’s for racking up 1175 pts. in last week’s race and positioning himself in line for the money. There’s a lot of racing left, but 1175 pts. will be tough to beat. So go get signed up and have at it. You could even go today and pick a lineup and leave it alone for the rest of the season if you’d like. You may be pleasantly surprised at the end of the season to find out you’ve won cash, substantial cash.

As for my strategy, I’m still working on one. Last season, I let my wife pick my lineup every week. She was really scientific about it too, printing the results from the last 5 years at each track, along with the points standings and starting positions. And she did pretty well, but this year she told me to get my own team.

So the first week, I went about picking a lineup as quickly as I could, hoping to get lucky and beat the lineup that she was working so hard to put together. When the race was over, I had 100 pts. She didn’t do much better, but she did do better.

The following week, I was half tempted to leave my lineup the same, the other half of me wanted to change it up though. So I did both. As an employee of the station, I’m sure I can’t win anyway, so disqualifying myself by submitting multiple entries wasn’t a big deal.

I decided to leave my week 1 lineup, “Thyrl’s Thugs”, the same for the remainder of the season. They’re now the static lineup, or control group. If I had known I’d be keeping this lineup intact for the whole season on the day that I picked it, I probably would have taken more care, but it only takes one week to win the big prize.

I created a second lineup too, “Thyrl’s Other Thugs”, which I’ll change every week. I decided that I’d make this one simple to manage too. Using the drivers’ stats pages on NASCAR.com, I simply pick the drivers based on their average finishes at that particular track. Obviously, this strategy will never allow me to pick rookies, but no system is perfect, we’ll work it as we go along, and make changes as necessary.

Last week, both lineups came in with 600 pts. Hopefully we’ll be better this week. Here are my lineups for Sunday’s race.

Thyrl’s Thugs

static lineup

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr.

2. Kyle Busch

3. Jimmie Johnson

4. Mark Martin

5. Tony Stewart

6. Kasey Kahne

7. Jeff Gordon

8. Greg Biffle

9. Joey Logano

10. Carl Edwards

Thyrl’s Other Thugs

dynamic lineup (avg. finish at Las Vegas in parentheses)

1. Denny Hamlin – (7.3)

2. Matt Kenseth – (9.0)

3. Jimmie Johnson – (9.3)

4. Jeff Burton – (10.5)

5. Mark Martin – (11.1)

6. Carl Edwards – (11.8)

7. Kyle Busch – (13.2)

8. Kevin Harvick – (14.2)

9. Tony Stewart – (14.4)

10. Greg Biffle – (14.6)

Now go get signed up and put in your lineup too. If you need more incentive than cash, the guy in second place right now named his team “da stillers”. You can’t let a Steelers fan walk away with the loot. Haven’t they won enough already?

Peace,

T

Fantasy’s Back – Free Money Up for Grabs

Posted on 13 February 2009 by Thyrl Nelson

WNST and Toyotaliveweb.com are once again in the fantasy sports business. For those who have been suffering from fantasy sports withdrawal, WNST’s fantasy offerings are back, and soon to be in full swing. The NASCAR season begins on Sunday, and $2500 in cash prizes are on the line in our Fantasy NASCAR Sweepstakes.

If you haven’t signed up already, what are you waiting for? What do you have to lose? Nothing, with no entry fee to play, it will only cost you 2 minutes of your time to get signed up. It will also give you the jump on registration for baseball and golf, both coming in April, and of course for fantasy football too.

There’ll be a relatively small number of players to compete against, and it’s easy to play. You simply pick the top 10 finishers in each week’s race, and get 100 points for each driver that you successfully predict in the top 10. You also get bonus points for any driver whose exact finish you predict correctly.

It’s easy to manage too. If you set a lineup today, and never go back to the game again, your lineup will carry over through the season. The 3 highest single week scores will walk away with the money, so you can get in at any time, but the earlier you do it, the more chances you’ll have to submit that winning lineup.

You may even find that it gives you a reason to watch a sport that you wouldn’t otherwise watch, and a rooting interest too. That’s what happened to me last season.

I’ve always considered myself a baseball, football and basketball guy with interests in boxing and MMA. I also have always been a guy who’d be interested in just about anything that gives you an excuse to make a wager. When it comes down to it, no sport may be more conducive to gambling than NASCAR racing.

Odds are, even if you don’t watch racing, you know who the good drivers are, just go and pick 10. Or you could take the lottery style approach and simply pick your favorite numbers. Draw them out of a hat if you’d like, just pick 10 drivers.

After you’ve selected your 10, print them out so you’ll remember, and watch the race on Sunday. What else is there to do this Sunday? At least make time to watch the last 100 laps. After that, if you can’t get into it, you just can’t. Baseball will be here soon enough.

Unlike other sports, NASCAR puts their biggest event at the beginning of the season. (I never quite bought the Superbowl analogy, but in a sport where the championship could potentially be sewn up before the last event, things are a bit different.) In any regard, it’s sure to be an entertaining race, and will be even more so, if it sets you on the way to walking away with your share of the $2500 in cash.

Sign Up And Have Fun!!!!!!!!!!

I challenge you to pick a lineup and watch the race and not enjoy it. Even if you don’t enjoy it, you’ll still have a lineup set, and won’t have to do anything else with it for the remainder of the season if you don’t want to. You could still wind up being pleasantly surprised once the season winds down.

Peace,

T

The Fantasy Flavor Positional Power Rankings – Week 14 WRs

Posted on 03 December 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

Despite a rough patch for the Cardinals, their vaunted receivers remain ranked #1 and #2 in the power rankings, as well as this week’s start rankings. The veterans have started to reclaim the receiver rankings over the last few weeks, as many of the rookies appear to be hitting that proverbial wall. We’ll be back tomorrow with your tight end, kicker and defense rankings, so check back then too.

Keep in mind that the power rankings, listed here, are based on year to date performance and not a reflection of your best options for week 14. Just below the power rankings are match up previews advising who should be better or worse than usual this week, based on their opponents. At the bottom, are the week 14 start rankings, that’s where you should look for help with your week 14 lineup decisions.

The Fantasy Flavor Positional Power Rankings – Week 14 RBs

Posted on 03 December 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

If this week’s running back rankings prove anything, it’s that everyone had pretty much an equal shot on draft day at putting together a winner. In fact, it’s probably those who drafted in the top 5 in most leagues who are the ones disappointed. Regardless, the running back rankings are littered with guys who would have been available in the 5th round and beyond, even in the deepest of leagues. Furthermore, the top 20 has been changing up dramatically from week to week, so every week is a chance to catch lightning in a bottle.

The Fantasy Flavor Positional Power Rankings – Week 14 QBs

Posted on 03 December 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

Again, there wasn’t much shake up in the quarterback rankings this week. On the bright side, close to half of the top 20 weren’t very highly regarded at draft time, so there could still be a few good options on the waiver wire. The playoffs are here for a lot of us, so make sure to take a look at all of the rankings, as every decision is magnified at this time of the season.
