Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 23 August 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Soccer-MLS: DC United @ Chivas USA (Sunday 10pm from Carson, California live on ESPN2); Auto Racing: IndyCar Series Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 300 (Saturday 7pm from Joliet, Illinois live on VERSUS), NASCAR Nationwide Series Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Sunday 2pm from Montreal live on ESPN2)

10. Rock The Bells feat. Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill (Sunday 12pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Jackson Browne (Tuesday 7:30pm Pier Six Pavilion), Trey Songz & Monica (Friday 8pm Pier Six Pavilion), Blondie & Cheap Trick (Sunday 7pm Pier Six Pavilion); Tears For Fears (Tuesday 8pm Rams Head Live), Nonpoint (Thursday 8pm Rams Head Live); Saving Abel (Tuesday 7pm Bourbon Street); Matisyahu (Wednesday 7pm 9:30 Club), NAS & Damien Marley (Monday 7pm 9:30 Club); Tony Bennett (Friday 8pm Wolf Trap); Patrice O’Neal (Friday-Sunday DC Improv)

I like a lot of this! I’ve said before on Facebook that I’ve lost many hours of my life wondering where Lauryn Hill ran off to. Never again…

I once saw Cheap Trick open for Aerosmith. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why Steven Tyler and company even bothered coming to the stage…

I may not love Tears For Fears but I sure as hell love this song…

Matisyahu played the last HFStival I was involved with when I was employed there. He carried his own equipment. And he kicked ass…

9. Glenn Clark’s Fantasy Football Draft (Friday 8pm Mountain Branch)

And with the sixth pick in the “Full House Fantasy Draft”, Team Jesse and the Rippers Select…

christurner

No way we can lose now…

8. Baltimore Comic-Con (Saturday & Sunday Baltimore Convention Center)

So if I go, do I wear THIS costume…

spiderman

or THIS one…

hogan

I feel like they’re both equally good options…but I’m probably only fat enough for the first one.

7. High School Football: Gilman @ Archbishop Spalding (Friday 7pm), St. John’s (DC) @ Calvert Hall (Saturday 1pm)

I love High School Football. I might not be quite as excited this week because my beloved Perry Hall Gators aren’t in action yet; but I still love the concept of high school football-and just the idea behind “Friday Night Lights” altogether. I posted Kenny Chesney’s “The Boys of Fall” as “The Greatest Song of All Time This Week” earlier this week, but not because of the song. Instead, I posted it entirely thanks to the EPIC speech from New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton at the beginning…

6. Team USA Basketball: Team USA vs. Greece (Wednesday 12pm from Athens, Greece live on ESPN)

I’ll always be grateful to our Greek friends for giving us things like baklava and Maria Menounos…

mariam

…but this is basketball we’re talking about. Kevin Durant and the boys in the red, white and blue have a simple responsibility. KICK SOME GREEK ASS.

But again, thanks for Maria Menounos. And baklava.

5. Golf: PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs-The Barclays (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday 1pm live on Golf Channel 3pm live on CBS, Sunday 12pm live on Golf Channel 2pm live on CBS. All golf from Paramus, New Jersey); Champions Tour Boeing Classic (Friday & Saturday 6:30, Sunday 7pm from Snoqualmie, Washington live on Golf Channel); LPGA Tour CN Canadian Women’s Open (Thursday & Friday 11:59pm on Golf Channel, Saturday 3pm Sunday 2pm live on Golf Channel. All golf from Winnipeg, Canada)

Apparently it’s a big deal that Tiger Woods is playing this week in New Jersey. With no offense to a guy who has lost more than the Orioles and Pirates combined this season, but I’d be much more interested if it were J-Woww playing this weekend in anywhere…

jwoww

(Edit from GMC: Seriously…I love the Jersey Shore. I don’t care what you think about that.)

4. Tennis: ATP Tour U.S. Open Series Pilot Pen Tennis (Thursday 1pm Friday 12pm & 7pm live on ESPN2, Saturday 1pm live on CBS, 7pm live on ESPN2. All tennis from New Haven, Connecticut); U.S. Open Opening Round (Monday 11am live on Tennis Channel, 1pm live on ESPN2. All U.S. Open tennis from New York)

I know better than to be interested in American tennis players. We all stink right now. My love affair with Andy Roddick is completely pointless, as at some point he’s inevitably going to lose to a player whose future is more suited for the kitchen at PF Chang’s than it is the Wimbledon Champions Ball.

So I’ll go ahead and blame my own stupidity for getting excited when I watched Mardy Fish take the first set from Roger Federer in the final out in Cincinnati. I should have known better. Mardy Fish is Mardy Fish. Roger Federer is Roger Federer.

It’s similar to getting excited about Taka Michinoku when he gets some early offense in a matchup with Triple H. Oh you don’t remember the reference? I’ll remind you the WWF title was on the line…

3. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC 118-Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn (Saturday 10pm from Boston live on Pay-Per-View); Bellator Fighting Championships 26 (Thursday 8pm from Kansas City live on Fox Sports Net)

So this is supposed to be the ultimate showdown between boxing and MMA, right? A boxer who has held titles at four different weight classes in James Toney against a mixed martial artist whose career has landed him in the UFC Hall of Fame in Randy Couture.

Whether or not the fight settles ANYTHING, I really hope that Dana White considers replacing Joe Rogan with Jim Gray for the post-fight interview (Some NSFW language in here…unless of course you work with my grandmom. I hear she’s gotten feisty late in life…)

2. Maryland State Fair (Friday-Monday Timonium Fairgrounds)

I can’t explain this enough. Not only will I get beer from the Shriners and collect free swag from crappy radio stations I will never listen to; but I will ABSOLUTELY dine like a king…

turkey

and I will absolutely hang with some of my closest friends…

horse

1. New York Giants @ Baltimore Ravens (Saturday 7:30pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on WBAL11)

Giants-Ravens, huh? Okay then….

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 29 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: WNBA-Indiana Fever @ Washington Mystics (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on ESPN2); Arena Football League: Chicago Rush @ Tampa Bay Storm (Friday 6:30pm from St. Petersburg, FL live on NFL Network)

10. Chicago & The Doobie Brothers (Wednesday 7:30pm Jiffy Lube Live), Victor Wooten (Saturday 8pm Recher Theatre), Pat Benatar & REO Speedwagon (Tuesday 7:30pm Wolf Trap), Pat McGee Band (Thursday 8pm Wolf Trap), Chuck Brown (Saturday 8pm & 11pm Rams Head On Stage), (hed) p.e. (Thursday 7:30pm Jaxx) “A Capitol 4th” featuring Darius Rucker & Gladys Knight (Sunday 8pm from U.S. Capitol live on PBS), “Uncle Sam Jam” featuring Soul Asylum & Virginia Coalition (Sunday 3pm Southwest DC Waterfront), “Frederick’s 4th” featuring Kelly Bell Band & Jerrod Niemann (Sunday 12pm Baker Park in Frederick); “Hot Tub Time Machine” available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

It’s not all local, but a lot of it is very good. I don’t care what they said in “The 40 Year Old Virgin”, Michael McDonald doing “What a Fool Believes” is a high point in musical history, even if he isn’t with the band anymore…

Seeing Pat McGee Band? Awesome. Seeing Pat McGee Band cover “Southern Cross”? Somehow awesomer…

Virginia Coalition may be the most underrated band in the world….

And as I said recently via Facebook (just search for “Glenn Clark”), if you don’t love Darius Rucker doing David Allan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name”, you just might as well hate everything else about America too…

9. Cycling: Tour De France (Saturday 11:30am, Sunday & Monday 8:30am from France live on VERSUS)

Look, I would love to pretend that I gave a crap about bike riding, but I don’t. I’ll be pulling for Lance Armstrong (is he still riding?) mostly because I love America; but also because he’s a big fan of ESPN8 “The Ocho”….

8. Auto Racing: NASCAR Coke Zero 400 (Saturday 7:30pm from Daytona, FL live on TNT), IndyCar Series Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen (Sunday 3:30pm from Watkins Glen, NY live on ABC)

So, why didn’t anyone tell me Danica Patrick was returning to the NASCAR Nationwide Series last weekend before I posted my Top 10???

danica

Trust me, I wouldn’t have watched-but it would have at least been fun to post more pictures of here like the one above!

7. Golf: PGA Tour AT&T National (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All Tiger Woods-hosted golf from Newton Square, PA), Champions Tour Montreal Championship (Friday-Sunday 6pm from Montreal live on Golf Channel)

Since we know what Tiger Woods is up to, let’s check in on what Rachel Uchitel is up to…

uchitel

You know, I think she’s doing alright.

6. Baltimore 4th of July Fireworks (Sunday 9pm Inner Harbor), Kingsville 4th of July Parade (Saturday 10am Kingsville)

With no offense to the folks in Dundalk, Towson, Bel Air or anywhere else where there’s going to be a parade this weekend; I just so happen to prefer the Kingsville one. Not just because I was born in Kingsville, but more because while I’m there it gives me a chance to take chicks back to the Jericho Covered Bridge and….ummm….talk….

bridge

5. High School Lacrosse: Under Armour All-America Lacrosse (Saturday Girls Game 5:30pm, Boys Game 8pm Unitas Stadium); MLL: Chesapeake Bayhawks @ Denver Outlaws (Sunday 9pm from Denver live on ESPN3)

And if you’re planning on heading out to Towson this weekend to check out some lacrosse, make sure you remember…

jailbait

…this ISN’T Venezuela….

4. Soccer: World Cup-Paraguay vs. Japan (Tuesday 10am from Pretoria, South Africa live on ESPN), Spain vs. Portugal (Tuesday 2:30pm from Cape Town, South Africa live on ESPN), Netherlands vs. Brazil (Friday 10am from Port Elizabeth, South Africa live on ESPN), Uruguay vs. Ghana (Friday 2:30pm from Johannesburg, South Africa live on ESPN), Argentina vs. Germany (Saturday 10am from Cape Town live on ABC), Paraguay/Japan winner vs. Spain/Portugal winner (Saturday 2:30pm from Johannesburg live on ABC); U.S. Open Cup: Richmond Kickers vs. DC United (Wednesday 7:30pm George Mason Stadium); MLS: DC United @ San Jose Earthquakes (Saturday 10:30pm from San Jose live on Comcast SportsNet &http://wnst.net/wordpress/glennclark/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=8779 MLS Direct Kick)

Attention Paraguay: PLEASE KEEP LARISSA RIQUELME IN THE WORLD CUP!!!!!!

larissa

If that means you have to stay in the Cup as well, so be it.

3. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC 116: Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin (Saturday 10pm from Las Vegas live on Pay-Per-View)

The UFC won’t let MMA fans watch fights on YouTube, BUT….they WILL let MMA fans watch videos of ACTION FIGURES fighting on YouTube…

…and honestly, that’s pretty awesome too.

2. Competitive Eating: Nathan’s Famous 4th of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest (Sunday 12pm from Coney Island live on ESPN); Phillips Harborplace Crab Cake Eating Contest (Saturday 1pm Harborplace Ampitheater)

This is the greatest American hero alive…

chestnut

Important question. When and where will the first ever Baltimore Peach Cake eating competition be? I will OWN…

peachcake

1. Tennis: Wimbledon (Tuesday-Thursday 7am live on ESPN2, 10am live on NBC; Friday 7am live on ESPN2, 12pm live on NBC; Saturday 9am-Ladies’ Final-live on NBC; Sunday 9am-Gentlemen’s Final-live on NBC. All tennis from London.)

Of COURSE Andy Roddick would lose to some dude that no one on the face of the FREAKING PLANET HAS EVER HEARD OF. Why wouldn’t he?

At least we had the Isner match. Now, we’ll most certainly get Federer-Nadal again. With no offense to Federer or Nadal; I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that one before.

Of course, England has a chance to have a homegrown champion this year. No, not Andy Murray. I was thinking more along the lines of Peter Colt. Don’t judge me for liking this movie…

10 Things I’d Like To See This Summer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

10 Things I’d Like To See This Summer

Posted on 23 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

With “The Morning Reaction” wrapping early this morning so Drew Forrester and I can go root for Team USA to top Algeria at Looney’s in Canton; I won’t have enough time to post a full Crabs & Beer update.

Instead, I figured I’d go “simple column” this morning. We’re on Day 3 of summer today, although it’s been hot enough to feel like each day lasts for 3 days this summer. Between now and September 22 when summer officially ends, there are some things I’d like to see…

10. 1 more game from Team USA in the World Cup

soccer

This is Number 10 because it’s the event closest to now. An appearance in the Round of 16 won’t really be all that historic for the Americans, as they’ve reached at least the round of 16 in 2 of their last 4 trips to the World Cup. BUT-here in town, having the Americans play significant games has been really nice in this area. We had a packed house in Bel Air last Friday for the Slovenia match, and Patriot Plaza in Towson was packed for the England match before that.

During matches, Facebook and Twitter have been wild with Team USA discussion. This area has really been galvanized by having a team that we root for play significant games. I don’t need to even begin to explain that it doesn’t happen in baseball anymore.

Selfishly, I’d like to see the Americans play two or even THREE more games before the World Cup ended. As close as we could get to the start of Training Camp would be really nice. That being said, I’ll be realistic. Just one more game would be particularly nice to keep folks in this area excited about…well…anything.

9. Robert Randolph in Baltimore

If you didn’t go to Artscape last year, you might not understand. The most electric night of the year in Charm City last summer was the night Robert Randolph rocked Artscape (see above). I guess you could argue that Bruce Springsteen playing 1st Mariner Arena in the fall was more electric because it was in front of a bigger crowd, but there was just something so unbelievably special about that night at Artscape.

It was the type of night that was unbelievably Baltimore. The crowd was as diverse a group of people as you could imagine seeing on a street corner. The show was as good as you would expect from Robert Randolph (and the Family Band), but it was BETTER because it was free, it was in Baltimore, and it was at an event that is attended by folks from all walks of life in town.

I have no doubt that Wale will play a great set at Artscape this year, as acts like Citizen Cope and The Roots have done in the past. There’s a chance that I might go see Robert Randolph in Philadelphia or Dewey Beach this summer as well. But it won’t quite be the same. What happened last summer was SPECIAL. I’d love to see a way that it could happen again in Baltimore this summer.

8. A tall receiver makes the Ravens roster

harper

Honestly, I’m not entirely sure that Demetrius Williams, Justin Harper or Eron Riley (or even Rodelin Anthony for that matter) are any good. Williams and Harper have had their chances on the active roster, and have little to show for it. Harper has played in just two games (both last season), and Williams caught just 4 TD’s in his 4 year career.

That being said, in past years-the team has had no option but to let them on the roster. That’s not the case this season. The Ravens HAVE receivers. Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason and Donte’ Stallworth are ALL going to make the team. Mark Clayton, Marcus Smith, David Reed and the receivers listed above are all in the mix to make the team as well. If one of the tall receivers makes the team, it’s NOT going to happen just because the team has no other choice. All of these guys are going to have to go to Westminster and make an impact at Training Camp.

The Ravens offense appears to be primed for their best season in team history. Joe Flacco, Michael Oher, Ray Rice and Anquan Boldin are enough pieces to have some pundits (like Bill Matt Williamson at ESPN.com) say that the team has the best offense in the AFC North. The only thing missing is a legitimate threat from a tall receiver. Hopefully one of these guys will separate themseves at McDaniel College and prove that they can be counted on.

7. Brock Lesnar beats Shane Carwin

brock

I consider myself a UFC fan. Heck, I consider myself a fan of all Mixed Martial Arts in general. That being said, on a scale of 1-10, I’m probably a 6 when it comes to my MMA fandom. I attend John Rallo’s “Shogun Fights” events, I went to the UFC Pay-Per-View in Philly last summer, I watch “The Ultimate Fighter” on SpikeTV, and I even occassionally wander over to Hooters or somewhere that shows the fights for free.

That being said, the only time in MY LIFE when I have plunked down 50 bucks of my own money to watch a fight was last July when Brock Lesnar faught Frank Mir. I wasn’t the only one. In fact, the fight did 1.6 million PPV buys, making it the most purchased PPV event of the year. It was the biggest event in UFC history, and gave the sport some absolute juice.

What made the event better was the fact that despite it being headlined by a former WWE champion, it had real legitimacy to it. The fight was an honest-to-God fight for the UFC Heavyweight title between two deserving fighters. It wasn’t Kimbo Slice. It wasn’t Herschel Walker. The best thing for the UFC is to have more events like that in the future.

For that to happen, Brock Lesnar needs to beat Shane Carwin. I hope he does.

6. Eric Hayes and Landon Milbourne get real chances to make NBA rosters

tersp

Greivis Vasquez is going to hear his name called Thursday night during the NBA Draft, and there’s no question in my mind that he will be on a NBA roster when the season tips off. (When does the season tip off, by the way?)

But the other two Maryland seniors aren’t nearly that type of sure thing. Eric Hayes and Landon Milbourne have each spent the last month or so traveling the country and trying to prove themselves capable of playing in the NBA. Teams like the Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers have given them looks, but it’s unlikely that either of them will hear their name called Thursday night.

That being said, I firmly believe both guys will end up in Las Vegas this summer playing in the NBA Summer League. I hope that after that, they each end up on a Training Camp roster with a REAL shot at making a team. Something tells me they’ll both end up in Europe eventually (I happen to think that Milbourne’s game is particularly well-suited for Europe), but I hope they both get a real chance to make it in the NBA first. Eric Hayes is NOT Steve Blake, but there’s a chance he could be Tim Legler.

These are both guys who were great competitors in College Park and made Terrapins alumni proud. They’re easy to root for, and I will absolutely be hoping for the best for both of them.

5. Maryland-Navy sold out on Labor Day, Inter Milan-Manchester City sold out in July

marylandnavy

Despite the fact that some folks think I should change my middle name to Testudo, I’m not excited about Terps football this season. I have a bad feeling that there isn’t enough talent to win the close games that Ralph Friedgen’s team lost a season ago.

That being said, having attended the last “Crab Bowl Classic” at M&T Bank Stadium, there are few football games in the world that I would be as excited to attend this season as I am about the Terrapins and Midshipmen on a day that just so happens to also be my birthday. The atmosphere when these teams met in 2005 was unbelievably electric. It was quite possibly the best atmosphere for any college football game I’ve ever attended, with MAYBE the exception of the Boise State-Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Inter Milan-Man City this summer clearly doesn’t have the juice of last summer’s AC Milan-Chelsea matchup, despite Inter winning the UEFA Champions League this season. But the event is still a world class soccer match, and it will provide a gauge for how Baltimore is viewed as a viable location for future major soccer events in town.

I like having big, exciting sporting events in town. With only 8 regular season NFL games (the two exhibition games aren’t really big or exciting) and Opening Day for the Orioles providing real juice, it helps to have one-off events that generate a spark in the area. To continue getting those events, the events that do come here must be well attended. I don’t really think both of these events will sell out (heck, I’m not sure either of them will), but it would go a long way for getting more events like these in the area.

4. Someone…making SOME sort of progress on the arena situation in Baltimore

arena

A lot of great things have happened in this state since Terry Hasseltine has been hired to get big events. Hasseltine has helped to bring the IndyCar Series to town, make strides in college football and soccer events, and make sure to keep the Preakness here in town.

That being said, there’s one area where NOTHING has happened that is unbelievably frustrating for sports fans in town.

24 months ago, the Baltimore Development Corporation reported that a new arena would be built downtown where the current 1st Mariner Arena sits. Since that time…ummm….well…have you heard anything new?

I’m not stupid. I don’t expect ground to be broken on an arena this summer. But it would be really nice to hear SOMETHING from Stephanie Rawlings-Blake or the leadership of the city about progress being made in the area. That’s not too much to ask, is it?

3. Andy Roddick playing on the 4th of July

roddick

This of course has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that I’m an obsessed A-Rod fan myself, but it is more than that as well. Tennis had a real chance for a resurgence in this country last summer when Andy Roddick took Roger Federer to the 5th set in the longest (game-wise) final in Wimbledon history. Roddick eventually fell short as Federer surpassed Pete Sampras to become the greatest grand slam champion in the history of the sport, but a Roddick win could have done wonders for the sport of tennis in America.

Andy Roddick has always played his best tennis in London. Despite having won his only grand slam at Flushing Meadows, he’s reached the finals three times at Wimbledon-having lost all three to Federer. The way he lost last year has to make you feel that if he REACHES the final again, he’d have a real chance to get over the hump.

He’s not a better player than Federer or Rafael Nadal. But if he can win at Wimbledon, it would lead to a much better American atmosphere surrounding the U.S. Open.

2. An acceptance that “The Plan” was a joke to begin with

macphail

I’m not going as far as to say the Birds should consider parting ways with Andy MacPhail. I just don’t want to hear any more about “The Plan.” “The Plan” has gone 19-51 this season, and there is just no reason to believe that the O’s will be any better next season despite the “young core” assembled.

I want to know what the team is going to do to WIN. And I want to know what they’re going to do to win in 2011. That was the promise all along, right?

I just don’t want to hear about “The Plan” ever again. Unless “The Plan” is no more than a plan to WIN.

1. A Ravens win Sept. 13 in East Rutherford

jets

As I’ve told to anyone who would listen, I really believe the Baltimore Ravens are Super Bowl contenders. That being said, I also think the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers are Super Bowl contenders.

For the positive vibes to keep flowing, a win at the Meadowlands would go a long way.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 21 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Boxing-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. John Duddy (Saturday 9pm from San Antonio live on Pay-Per-View); MLL Lacrosse: Toronto Nationals @ Chesapeake Bayhawks (Thursday 7:30pm Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium); WNBA: Los Angeles Sparks @ Washington Mystics (Thursday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Phoenix Mercury @ Washington Mystics (Sunday 4pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet); “Grown Ups” and “Knight and Day” out in theaters (Friday)

10. Carole King & James Taylor (Wednesday 8pm Verizon Center), Peter Frampton & Yes (Thursday 7pm Pier Six Pavilion), Phish (Saturday & Sunday 6pm Merriweather Post Pavilion), Carbon Leaf (Friday 8pm Rams Head Live), Bruce in the USA (Saturday 8pm Rams Head Live), Adam Lambert & Orianthi (Sunday 7pm Rams Head Live), Thrice (Saturday 7pm Recher Theatre), Hole (Sunday 7pm 9:30 Club), Sister Hazel (Friday 8pm Rams Head On Stage), Silversun Pickups (Wednesday 7:30pm D.A.R. Constitution Hall); Eminem “Recovery“, Robert Randolph & The Family Band “We Walk This Road” and The Roots “How I Got Over” available in stores and iTunes (Tuesday), Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band “London Calling: Live in Hyde Park” and “Stones in Exile” available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

Well then, where to start? Columbia might look like one big Michael Phelps house party this weekend. The thing is…Trey Anastasio and company are sometimes really REALLY good, and not JUST when they’re hanging out with Jay-Z…

If you’ve never seen Carbon Leaf, I can’t recommend it enough. And not JUST because I’ve sobbed uncontrollably into a Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day while “The Boxer” was playing in the background. Don’t judge me…

Believe it or not, Sister Hazel actually had more than one good song. “All For You” is one of the greatest songs EVER…but “Happy” wasn’t too bad either. If you’re in the Annapolis area, they might just play it for you. Tell them I asked them to. It won’t help, but I’ll think it’s cool…

I got a hold of the new RR&TFB disc today. Don’t bother me for a while. I wish I could find a video for a song on the record that wasn’t a commercial for a TNT show (Memphis Beat) that looks like it will go down as a worse decision than “Alvin & The Chipmunks” for Jason Lee, but you can only work with what you have…

9. Volleyball: AVP Belmar Open (Sunday 2pm live on ESPN2, 4pm live on Universal Sports. All beach action from Belmar, NJ)

I was thinking to myself last week “Why is it that a sport whose action looks like this…

boxing

always makes the Top 10, while a sport whose action looks like THIS…
volleyball

Has a way of finding itself in “Honorable Mention”?

As you can see, I’ve corrected my mistakes. Also, a plug for the Barefoot Wine “AVP Next” events that go on at the “Baltimore Beach” near Rash Field in the Inner Harbor. And by “plug” I really mean “a suggestion.” My suggestion be that the competitors consider attire more similar to the picture of Misty May and Kerri Walsh above. This is Charm City, ladies. Visitors to town deserve to be charmed! That is all.

8. Indoor Football-AIFA: Reading Express @ Baltimore Mariners (Saturday 7pm 1st Mariner Arena), AFL: Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings @ Tampa Bay Storm (Friday 8pm from Tampa Bay live on NFL Network)

Sadly, I will be in Ocean City this weekend-so I will again miss out on the Mariners, who I really want to see. Especially considering they beat New Jersey last week by something like 654 points. 654? I think it was 654. It might have been more. When it comes to beating New Jersey, that’s really God’s work.

Of course, that means that while you’re checking out QB EJ Nemeth’s beard…

nemeth

…which is awesome, don’t get me wrong….I’ll be in the same town as WNST’s own Intern Genna…

…a girl who recently changed her Facebook name to “IronLiver.” Yes. “IronLiver.” If you’re a company who ISN’T interested in hiring this girl, I would NEVER want to work for you.

7. Auto Racing: NASCAR Lenox Industrial Tools 301 (Sunday 1pm from Loudon, New Hampshire live on TNT)

Let’s cut the crap here. I could pretend I know anything about what’s going on this year on the Sprint Cup series, or we could watch Ricky Bobby’s prayer scene from “Talladega Nights”.

I figured we would agree…

6. Golf: PGA Tour Travelers Championship (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Cromwell, Connecticut.); LPGA Championship (Thursday & Friday 12:30pm, Saturday & Sunday 4pm from Pittsford, New York live on Golf Channel); Champions Tour Dick’s Sporting Goods Open (Friday 6:30pm, Saturday & Sunday 1pm from Endicott, New York live on Golf Channel)

Coming off the excitement of Graeme McDowell winning the U.S. Open, I bet at least 3 people in the Old Line State (not named Drew Forrester) will watch Golf this weekend.

The LPGA Championship is the event that used to be held at Bulle Rock until McDonald’s dropped the sponsorship. I know that there aren’t a whole lot of you that would have wandered up to Harford County to watch the ladies play golf this weekend, but it certainly isn’t a good thing to have the event gone. Partly because it brought money to the area.

More because it means Melissa Reid won’t be coming to town…

5. NHL Entry Draft (Friday 7pm live on VERSUS, Saturday 1pm live on NHL Network from Los Angeles), NHL Awards Show (Wednesday 7:30pm from Las Vegas live on VERSUS)

“And the award for the biggest chokejob in the NHL Playoffs goes to…..”

Heehee.

4. MMA-Strikeforce: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum (Saturday 10pm from San Jose live on Showtime), Bellator Fighting Championships XXIII (Thursday 8pm from Louisville live on Fox Sports Net)

Of course, the whole Mixed Martial Arts world is buzzing about the chance that former WWE wrestler Dave Batista may be headed to Strikeforce himself. I’m as much of a fan of “The Animal” as anyone else, but I will admit that I’m not so sure how excited I am to see a 40-some year old former wrestler suddenly try his hand at combat fighting.

That being said-if he DOES make the move, won’t EVERY opponent he ever has remind him about the whole “Deacon Batista” bit he had with “Reverend D-Von?”…

3. Tennis: Wimbledon (Tuesday-Friday 7am & 12pm live on ESPN2, 9:30am & 2pm live on ESPNU; Saturday 7am live on ESPN2, 12pm live on NBC; Monday 6:30am & 1pm live on ESPN2, 10am live on NBC. All tennis from London.)

Do you have any idea how close we were to seeing Roger Federer eliminated while Andy Roddick rolled on Day 1 of the fortnight? I would have given ANYTHING for that.

Also, props to my buddy BJ for this. With both major events going on at the same time-it’s worth wondering. Have we ever seen John Harkes and Mary Carillo in the same room at the same time? Let’s start with Harkes, he’s the 2nd voice you hear in these highlights after JP Dellacamera…

And now here’s Mary Carillo…

I’m just sayin’….

2. NBA Draft (Thursday 7pm from New York live on ESPN)

Here’s what we know about the NBA Draft:

1-The Wizards will take Kentucky’s John Wall with the #1 pick.

2-Whenever he’s picked, former Terrapins guard Greivis Vasquez will cry.

3-No one will look dumber than Joakim Noah did in 2007…

noah

1. Soccer-World Cup: Mexico vs. Uruguay (Tuesday 10am from Rustenberg, South Africa live on ESPN), France vs. South Africa (Tuesday 10am from Bloemfontein, South Africa live on ESPN2), Nigeria vs. South Korea (Tuesday 2:30pm from Durban, South Africa live on ESPN2), Greece vs. Argentina (Tuesday 2:30pm from Polokwane, South Africa live on ESPN), Slovenia vs. England (Wednesday 10am from Port Elizabeth, South Africa live on ESPN2), United States vs. Algeria (Wednesday 10am from Pretoria, South Africa live on ESPN), Ghana vs. Germany (Wednesday 2:30pm from Johannesburg, South Africa live on ESPN), Australia vs. Serbia (Wednesday 2:30pm from Nelspruit, South Africa live on ESPN2), Slovakia vs. Italy (Thursday 10am from Johannesburg live on ESPN), Paraguay vs. New Zealand (Thursday 10am from Polokwane live on ESPN2), Denmark vs. Japan (Thursday 2:30pm from Rustenberg live on ESPN), Cameroon vs. Netherlands (Thursday 2:30pm from Cape Town, South Africa live on ESPN2), North Korea vs. Ivory Coast (Friday 10am from Nelspruit live on ESPN2), Portugal vs. Brazil (Friday 10am from Durban live on ESPN), Switzerland vs. Honduras (Friday 2:30pm from Bloemfontein live on ESPN2), Chile vs. Spain (Friday 2:30pm from Pretoria live on ESPN), Knockout Round Games (Saturday & Sunday 10am live on ESPN, 2:30pm live on ABC; Monday 10am & 2:30pm live on ESPN); NASL: NSC Minnesota Stars @ Crystal Palace Baltimore (Saturday 7pm UMBC Stadium); MLS: DC United @ Columbus Crew (Saturday 7:30pm Columbus live on MLS Direct Kick & Comcast SportsNet)

I know I’ve posted this before. Probably multiple times. But when it comes time for a crucial moment in American history, nothing prepares me for the moment quite as much as the gang from “Team America: World Police.” Video is NSFW. Unless you work at a place that loves America so much it makes you use the F-word.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 01 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Auto Racing-NASCAR Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 (Sunday 1pm from Pocono Raceway live on TNT), IndyCar Series Firestone 550k (Saturday 8pm from Fort Worth, TX live on VERSUS); MLL: Boston Cannons @ Chesapeake Bayhawks (Friday 7:30pm Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium); WNBA: Atlanta Dream @ Washington Mystics (Saturday 7pm Verizon Center); Boxing: Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Cotto (Saturday 10:15pm from New York live on HBO)

10. Hall & Oates (Sunday 6pm Pier Six Pavilion); Taylor Swift (Tuesday & Wednesday 7pm Verizon Center); WMZQfest Throwdown feat. Montgomery Gentry & Little Big Town (Sunday 2:15pm Jiffy Lube Live); Pscyhadelic Furs & She Wants Revenge (Tuesday 7pm Rams Head Live), Passion Pit (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live); Lil’ Kim (Saturday 9pm Sonar); Broken Bells (Monday 7:30pm 9:30 Club); Aisha Tyler (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv); Denis Leary (Wednesday 8pm Warner Theatre); Toby Keith (Saturday 7:30pm Aberdeen Proving Ground); Jeff Beck (Monday 7:30pm Wolf Trap); Jack Johnson “To The Sea” available in stores (Tuesday); U2-360 live from the Rose Bowl available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

I’d like to say there’s a lot of really good music on this list. Of course, I can’t actually say that-because I’m really bad at lying.

I feel like I should be more into Hall & Oates than I am…

I’m not the biggest fan of country music, but I AM a fan of Little Big Town…

I have a friend who graduated from the University of Oklahoma. When she gets uppity about how good the Sooners are at football, I bring her back to earth by reminding her that Toby Keith played football for the Sooners, and he’s a clown. Although, he DID do this song…

9. AIFA-Erie Storm @ Baltimore Mariners (Saturday 7pm 1st Mariner Arena); AFL-Jacksonville Sharks @ Chicago Rush (Friday 8pm from Chicago live on NFL Network)

I assume that folks in Erie, PA are Steelers fans, so I feel like they’re probably terrible people that I wouldn’t like. That being said, The Wonders are from Erie…

…and Tom Hanks > every other person on the planet. So I’m kinda torn…

8. Golf: PGA Tour-The Memorial presented by Morgan Stanley (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Dublin, Ohio), Champions Tour Principal Charity Classic (Friday & Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from West Des Moines, Iowa live on Golf Channel)

With Phil Mickelson on his heels, Tiger Woods returns this week. I’m getting to the point where I ALMOST feel bad for him. This guy’s life went from totally awesome to completely terrible. Of course, if it hadn’t-the only thing we’d be able to talk about is golf, and that’s freaking terrible.

You know, I could sit here and BS about a sport that I literally pay less attention to than I do to this season of Glee; or I could just post this video of Joslyn James talking about Tiger’s anatomy. Seriously, it’s golf. What am I supposed to do here? And I know you’ll be surprised by this, but this video is probably NSFW. Unless you work at a place where people talk about sex organs openly. You know, like the Hallmark store.

[metacafe]http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4407489/joslyn_james_talks_tiger_woods_s_penis_on_playboy_radio/[/metacafe

7. "Get Him To The Greek" opens in theaters (Friday), John Waters "Role Models" book signing (Saturday 7pm Atomic Books)

1-Forgetting Sarah Marshall was HILARIOUS. That doesn't mean Get Him To The Greek will definitely be hilarious, but it at least gives it a shot...

2-Russell Brand is married to or going to marry Katy Perry. I should look that up, but it sounds remarkably boring. However, Katy Perry isn’t unattractive. That makes Russell Brand movies better.
katyperry

3-The John Waters book signing gives me an excuse to post his freaking great interview with David Letterman from 1986. Or as I like to call it, “the greatest moment of all time EVER.”

6. Soccer: Team USA vs. Australia (Saturday 8:30am from Rustenberg, South Africa live on ESPN2); U.S. Open Cup: Real Salt Lake @ DC United (Wednesday 7:30pm RFK Stadium), MLS: Real Salt Lake @ DC United (Saturday 7:30pm from RFK Stadium live on Comcast SportsNet & MLS Direct Kick)

Chances of Glenn Clark being awake at 8:30 on Saturday to watch our boys kick some Kiwi ass? Slim. Unless of course you’re an establishment that makes beer mugs out of bacon…

bacon

5. Belmont Stakes (Saturday 5pm from Belmont Park, NY live on ABC)

Since I won’t be making the final leg of the Triple Crown, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would just be willing to come over and make me a handful of these…

breeze

And by “someone come over”, I really mean “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” needs to have Google searched “Belmont Breeze ingredients” before I finish this blog.

4. NHL Playoffs-Stanley Cup Finals: Flyers/Blackhawks (Game 3 Wednesday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 4 Friday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 5 if necessary Sunday 8pm from Chicago live on NBC)

I will be forced to admit that I haven’t watched even a second of the Stanley Cup Finals thus far. I watched lacrosse Saturday night, and WWE Raw Monday night. Apparently Game 1 got good ratings though, so Mazel Tov.

That being said, if the Blackhawks win the Cup-this is how I will celebrate…

3. NBA Playoffs-NBA Finals: Lakers/Celtics (Game 1 Thursday 9pm from Los Angeles live on ABC, Game 2 Sunday 8pm from Los Angeles live on ABC)

I’m rooting for LA in this one by default, mostly because I hate everything that has to do with Boston. In fact, I think Everlast (from House of Pain-you’ll remember he wore a Celtics jersey in the “Jump Around” video) should be arrested for what he did to Johnny Cash…

This is really difficult too, especially knowing that Maria Menounos roots for the C’s. She seems nice…

maria

2. Tennis: French Open (Tuesday-Thursday 8am live on Tennis Channel, 12pm live on ESPN2; Friday 11am live on NBC; Saturday & Sunday 9am live on NBC. All action from Paris.)

So, Robby Ginepri’s loss to Novak Djokovic left no American men at Roland Garros. Again. My little cousins are better at playing in clay than American men are. I’ll revert back to rooting for Robin Soderling and whoever else is playing against Roger Federer. It’s pretty much how I’ve handled my love of tennis since Andre Agassi retired. And I can always root for Jelena Janokvic in the meantime???

jankovic

Nope. Too weird.

1. Ravens Rookie Camp (Wednesday & Thursday, 1 Winning Drive), Ravens Rookie Show (Wednesday 7pm Casey’s in Towson-airing Thursday on AM1570 WNST), Ravens Roost Convention (Thursday-Sunday; Parade Saturday-Ocean City)

Don’t you dare be the guy that says “Is there gonna be enough food at Casey’s to feed Terrence Cody???” I expect better from you. And I’ve already giggled about it in my mind about a hundred times before now.

You know what the best thing is about the Ravens event in Ocean City this weekend? Intern Genna works in Ocean City…

genna

Intern Genna > Santa Claus.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 17 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention-MMA: UWC 8 (Saturday 7pm Patriot Center), Strikeforce Challengers: Matt Lindland vs. Kevin Casey (Friday 11pm from Portland, OR live on Showtime); Boxing: Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez (Saturday 10pm live from Los Angeles live on Showtime); WNBA: New York Liberty @ Washington Mystics (Friday 7pm Verizon Center); Golf: PGA Tour HP Byron Nelson Championship (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Irving, TX) LPGA Sybase Match Play Championship (Thursday & Friday 1pm, Saturday & Sunday 2pm from Gladstone, NJ live on Golf Channel); IIHF World Ice Hockey Championships (Semi-finals Saturday, Finals Sunday from Cologne, Germany live on Universal Sports); “MacGruber” and “Shrek Forever After” open in theaters (Friday), “Invictus” available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

10. Bamboozle Road Show feat. Good Charlotte and All Time Low (Saturday 3pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Insane Clown Posse, Kottonmouth Kings & Coolio (Thursday 5:30pm Pier Six Pavilion); Brad Paisley & Darius Rucker (Saturday 7:30pm Jiffy Lube Live); B-52′s (Saturday 8pm Rams Head Live); Nicki Minaj (Saturday 9pm Sonar); Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds (Thursday 7:30pm D.A.R. Constitution Hall), Neil Young (Monday 8pm D.A.R. Constitution Hall); Jimmy Fallon (Saturday 8pm Warner Theatre); DC101 Chili Cookoff feat. Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains and Cage The Elephant (Saturday 12:30pm RFK Stadium); Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival feat. Buddy Guy and Chuck Berry (Saturday & Sunday all day Sandy Point State Park); Anthony Bourdain & Eric Ripert (Saturday 8pm France-Merrick Performing Arts Theatre)

Or what I want to call the strangest clusterf*ck of live shows to ever hit Charm City and the surrounding areas.

Seriously, Coolio is playing a show in Baltimore this week. Did any of you know Coolio was still performing? Alive??? I’m not hating either. Coolio kicked ass…

A lot of people don’t like Good Charlotte. Don’t count me among them. Benji and Joel Madden are amongst the biggest Orioles fans on the face of the planet. We need as many of them as we can get.

When Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds have hung out together in the past, good things have been known to happen…

If I were a better son, I’d take my dad to see Chuck Berry in Annapolis. He’ll have to settle for the Beach Boys later this summer…

And Anthony Bourdain is doing a stage show. I’ll admit to not knowing much about Anthony Bourdain other than the fact that he once ate lake trout and hung with “Snoop” from The Wire on his show “No Reservations”…

9. World Series of Flip Cup (Saturday 3:30pm Recher Theatre)

Not all college athletes are competing for NCAA Championships. Some are competing for far more noble causes. Like the cause of turning over plastic red cups. And maybe in the process…if you’re an attractive female competitor…making out with your fellow competitors.

Just remember this much as you choose your team for Saturday’s showdown in Towson…

flipcup

8. Auto Racing: NASCAR All-Star Race (Saturday 9pm from Charlotte live on SPEED), NASCAR Showdown (Saturday 7:30pm from Charlotte live on SPEED); IndyCar Series Indianapolis 500 Qualifying (Saturday 11am, Sunday 12pm from Indianapolis live on VERSUS)

The thing about the All-Star Race is that NASCAR changes things to be more TV friendly.

Amongst the changes this year? It will be a football game instead of a car race.

In all seriousness, if you enjoy left turns and/or know where to find SPEED on your XFinity lineup; this is probably* worth watching on Saturday night.

*In that, if you’re at home on a Saturday night and have nothing better to watch than an exhibition car race on a channel no one has ever heard of, it might be time to start thinking about where you are in your life.

7. Tennis: French Open (Roland Garros) opening round (Sunday 12pm live on ESPN2, Monday 5am live on Tennis Channel. Action from Paris.)

You’re thinking to yourself, “this is just an excuse for Glenn to post some shirtless picture of his true love Andy Roddick.”

But you’re wrong. You see, until A-Rod wins another Grand Slam event, I’m not giving him any more of the “drooling” type of attention.

Instead, I’m excited for all of the tennis action. With Rafael Nadal healthy, he’ll be looking to re-claim his title from defending champ Roger Federer. Robin Soderling reached the final last year, Andy Murray is coming off a Grand Slam final at the Australian Open in January, and Juan Martin Del Potro is still riding high from his U.S. Open victory last September.

You know, I tried. I really tried.

Let’s go Andy!

andy

6. Pro Wrestling: WWE Over The Limit (Sunday 8pm from Detroit live on Pay-Per-View)

Why am I excited for Over The Limit? I get the feeling we might see more of The Bella Twins…

bellatwins

5. Ravens Passing Camp (Tuesday-Thursday; availability Tuesday from 1 Winning Drive)

What Joe Flacco is doing > what you’re doing.

Of course, with the new rules the Ravens passed down, I’m not sure I’m allowed to report anything Joe Flacco does in Owings Mills this week. I’ll touch on that at another time.

Before heading back to Owings Mills, Mark Clayton made a pit stop at his old stomping grounds in Norman, Oklahoma to finish off his degree. I know a gal who is a proud Oklahoma alum and huge Sooners fan, so I took to Facebook over the weekend to let her know the good news.

When she asked me what he majored in, I could only make the assumption I would make about any Oklahoma football player in the Bob Stoops era.

“I’m pretty sure it was BCS Bowl Game Losing.”

4. NHL Playoffs: Eastern Conference Finals-Flyers/Canadiens (Game 2 Tuesday 7pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 3 Thursday 7pm from Montreal live on VERSUS, Game 4 Saturday 3pm from Montreal live on NBC); Western Conference Finals-Sharks/Blackhawks (Game 2 Tuesday 10pm from San Jose live on VERSUS, Game 3 Friday 8pm from Chicago live on VERSUS, Game 4 Sunday 3pm from Chicago live on NBC)

So let me get this straight: the Habs have already made sports fans in Washington and Pittsburgh miserable; and now they have to chance to make fans in Philadelphia miserable as well? Do you think there’s a chance we could schedule them for a series against the Indianapolis Ice next, and then some random hockey team at Duke after that???

I’ve posted pictures of Youppi the last two weeks and I’ve seen the Canadiens win. I’m not going to risk doing anything else this week…

youppi

3. NBA Playoffs: Eastern Conference Finals-Celtics/Magic (Game 2 Tuesday 8:30pm from Orlando, Game 3 Saturday 8:30pm from Boston, Game 4 Monday 8:30pm from Boston. All games live on ESPN); Western Conference Finals-Suns/Lakers (Game 2 Wednesday 9pm from Los Angeles, Game 3 Sunday 8:30pm from Phoenix. All games live on TNT); NBA Draft Lottery (Tuesday 8pm from Secaucus, NJ live on ESPN)

As I said Sunday via Twitter, it’s nice to see JJ Redick continue his long-standing tradition of missing big shots in the final minutes of big games. I am by no means rooting for any team from Boston, but I know this much. No team is winning a big game with this guy on the floor late…

jj

Thanks Rich in Westminster.

As you know, I’m a Phoenix Suns fan-despite what Steve Nash did to the Terrapins back when he was with Santa Clara. It’s just hard to stay mad at the guy…

2. College Lacrosse-Men’s NCAA Tournament: Notre Dame vs. Maryland (Saturday 12pm from Princeton, NJ live on ESPNU); Men’s Division III NCAA Tournament: Roanoke @ Stevenson (Wednesday 4pm Caves Athletic Complex-semifinals Sunday; winner faces Salisbury/Haverford winner) Women’s NCAA Tournament: Penn @ Maryland (Saturday 12pm Ludwig Field); MIAA High School Lacrosse: (A Conference Semis Tuesday 6pm & 8:30pm, Conference Finals Saturday 3pm, 5:30pm & 8pm. All action from Unitas Stadium); MLL: Chesapeake Bayhawks @ Toronto Nationals (Saturday 2pm from Toronto live on ESPN2)

How convenient! I already don’t like the Fighting Irish! I won’t have to learn how to hate a new team!!!

As I like to on days where games of this magnitude are played; I will be wearing this…

ndsucks

1. Soccer: UEFA Champions League Final-Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan (Saturday 2:30pm from Madrid live on FOX), NASL: Portland Timbers @ Crystal Palace Baltimore (Saturday 7pm UMBC Stadium), MLS: DC United @ Houston Dynamo (Saturday 8pm from Houston live on Galavision), Team USA Women vs. Germany (Saturday 6pm from Cleveland live on ESPN2)

For those of you that aren’t aware, the Champions League Final is like the Super Bowl of European sports. Being an Italian myself, I will be pulling for Inter Milan (or Internazionale if you will), and will ABSOLUTELY be rooting for them again when they invade Baltimore this summer for a match against Manchester City at M&T Bank Stadium. Although I will admit I don’t exactly follow their every match.

Think about it though. You could root for Bayern Munich, and support a country whose greatest accomplishment is a weird pair of tight shorts with suspenders…

lederhosen

Or you could root for Inter Milan, and support a country whose greatest accomplishment looks more like this…

pizza

Is it really a question?

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 January 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Friday!

It’s a Happy Friday for me because Reggie Bush’s girlfriend (@KimKardashian) likes to update her Twitter account….

kimk

She seems nice.

Let’s see what everyone has to say today…..

1. Ravens Official Site’s Ryan Mink says Jermaine Gresham, Dez Bryant, Brandon LaFell, Syd’Quan Thompson, Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, Brandon Spikes, Damian Williams all mocked to Ravens

Oh thank God. MORE NFL DRAFT PORN!!!!!

gresham
tate
spikes
syd'quan

It would be easy to dismiss a player like Brandon Spikes (besides his off-field troubles) by saying “the Ravens NEED a WR. They’re taking a WR.” But that just isn’t necessarily true. The Ravens WILL again take the best player available (like they did a season ago when they took Michael Oher despite needing a receiver), I just think it would be best served for everyone involved if the best player available at the time WAS a receiver.

2. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says John Harbaugh thinks Jarret Johnson Pro Bowl snub each of last 2 seasons

No one is going to disagree, are they?

But as was the case with Haloti Ngata this season, players are often rewarded the season AFTER their breakout year. They tend to have to build a reputation at positions where stats can’t tell the story. What Jarret Johnson (and possibly Michael Oher & Ben Grubbs as well) did this season should help him earn a trip to the Pro Bowl next season.

3. ESPN.com’s James Walker says Jamal Lewis, Todd Heap, Jonathan Ogden, Matt Stover, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Chris McAlister and Ed Reed “all-decade” players in AFC North

I guess I was a bit surprised that Terrell Suggs made this list-but there are no arguments from me here at all. I was a bit surprised Walker left Haloti Ngata off his “others considered” list at D-Line, but there have been a LOT of really good D-Linemen in the AFC North this decade.

Insert your own “Where’s Kyle Boller?” joke here.

4. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says late Millikan’s tenure began pavement on road to Terps’ eventual NCAA Championship

Clearly the influence Coach Millikan had on Gary Williams could be seen throughout Williams’ tenure in College Park-and Luke is right to point out that it was evident in how Gary brought together a group of kids headlined by Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter to cut down the nets in April 2002.

It has certainly been a tough year for the entire athletic department, as they have lost former athletic director James Kehoe, as well as major boosters Jack Heise, Thomas Fields, and Bob Novak.

5. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland has reached NCAA Tournament last 12 times they started ACC play 4-1

And since the NCAA Tournament was expanded, it makes nothing but a lot of sense that a team that starts 4-1 should still be alive come March Madness. In the ACC, you would have to go 4-7 or worse the rest of the way to miss dancing.

But they do HAVE to get those wins. Their quest to do that continues Sunday night at Clemson-the game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet locally, Fox Sports Net nationally.

6. Maryland Official Site says Lori Bjork scored 22 points to lead Terrapins women past Virginia Tech in Blacksburg

This was a much needed victory for Brenda Frese’s crew last night after 3 straight losses. If Lori Bjork is developing into a go-to player for them, they will be in a much better place moving forward. Now they make an odd trip to Longwood Sunday before returning to ACC play next Friday against Georgia Tech.

7. The AP says Greyhounds couldn’t hang on late, fell to Fairfield at Reitz Arena

REALLY tough way to lose a winnable game at home against a pretty good MAAC foe. The Hounds hung tight for 35 minutes, but couldn’t finish the Stags off at the end. Jimmy Patsos’ crew will have to bounce back on Sunday afternoon, as Niagara pays a visit to Reitz Arena.

8. The Sun’s Peter Schmuck believes Birds will DFA Armando Gabino to make room for Mark Hendrickson

I had guessed Cla Meredith. I guess I could see why the O’s would have more interest in keeping Meredith than they would in Gabino. The real question will really be what will happen with Alberto Castillo now that the Birds have another left handed reliever in Hendrickson.

9. Seattle Post Intelligencer’s Todd Dybas says Erik Bedard likely 3-5 months away from being down with rehab

There were also rumors yesterday that the Royals were interested in Bedard. Which might mean that for once in recent MLB history-there is a player who might actually be HOPING for an offer from Baltimore.

I’d be fine with the Orioles taking a flyer on Bedard-as long as that flyer doesn’t cost more than maybe $4 million. If he can return in May, he might be able to offer some help to this staff.

That being said, Andy MacPhail clearly painted the picture that the team would not be bringing in any more outside FA’s. Of course, if Bedard remains on the market, that could always change.

10. Toronto Sun’s Steve Green says former Orioles 2B Roberto Alomar to be inducted into Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

Which doesn’t make up….AT ALL….for the travesty that was Alomar missing out on Cooperstown a couple weeks ago.

Humorously, I think Pete Rose is in the Canadian Hall of Fame as well.

11. The Sun’s Candus Thomson says despite missing Olympics, Kimmie Meissner hopes to compete again

In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying Kiira Korpi from Finland during the Vancouver….

korpi

12. The Sun’s Katherine Dunn says MIAA in talks to merge with Washington Catholic Athletic Conference in football

Can someone with actual experience here tell me how they feel about this? Having gone to Perry Hall, this doesn’t mean a whole lot to me-but I don’t think I would like it…

And finally, I leave you with this.

Andy Murray will face Roger Federer for the Australian Open title tomorrow night (which I believe is actually sometime in 2020 in Melbourne). If he hits a shot like this one he hit against Maran Cilic, he can’t be beat.

Talk to you this weekend.

Once again, stuff all over the place this week.

First of all, if you didn’t like Wale before…

…you’re gonna have to start liking him soon, as Ravens RB Ray Rice makes a cameo in his upcoming video for “Pretty Girlz”

wale

I probably won’t go see Martina McBride & Trace Adkins (nay, definitely); but I will admit that there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with a “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”….

I don’t care for Owl City myself. But if you’d like to hear this song for the 1,000,001st time, I’d imagine they’ll be playing it…..

If your girlfriend thinks this song is a great description of her, maybe just make sure everything is cool at home BEFORE you say “Yeah, she kicks ass!”…

I thought this guy was pretty funny on MadTV…..

I really kinda dug this Jay-Z/Rihanna/Bono/The Edge collaboration on Friday night……

When I went to see “This Is It”, I really enjoyed the part of the show where MJ crooned some old Jackson 5 tunes. It made me sad knowing this could never happen again…..

If I looked more like Martin O’Malley, I’d probably be more likely to participate in the Plunge…..

plunge

But, I may actually come out to Sandy Point, just because I’m still a fan of Kelly Bell Band…..

And if you think less of me because I like John Mayer, you’re just too lame to admit that you’re a fan….

9-Ballroom Boxing (Friday 8pm Michael’s 8th Avenue)

I am going to be attending this event with Bob Haynie and Ray Bachman; looking forward to seeing Darnell “The Dingaling Man” Wilson. If you’re looking for us, we’ll be this gang….

ratpack

8-Golf: PGA Tour Farmers Insurance Open (Thursday & Friday 3pm Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm CBS. All Golf from San Diego)

Finally, there are boobs back in golf besides the ones Tiger Woods has been chasing…..

mickelson

Of course, I prefer Cori Rist’s (just not necessarily the rest of her)…..

rist

7-NBA: Lakers @ Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Wizards @ Nets (Friday 8pm from East Rutherford, NJ live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Knicks @ Wizards (Saturday 8pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Celtics @ Wizards (Monday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

The most exciting week the ‘Zards could EVER ask for. They play the two defending champions in the C’s and Lakers-AND-there might be a pair of wins on the schedule with the Nets and Knicks.

I mean, if you lose to a team that previously lost by 50 points….to anyone…..shouldn’t you just be relegated out of the league???

And also, thanks to Yahoo! Sports’ “Balls Don’t Lie” for digging up THIS picture from the SI Vault, which is even better than the Manute Bol/Muggsy Bogues picture I found last week…..

manute

6-NFL Pro Bowl (Sunday 7:30pm from Miami live on ESPN)

What a disaster of an idea it was to play the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl. Instead of some combination of Peyton Manning/Tom Brady/Ben Roethlisberger/Phillip Rivers; the AFC is stuck with Matt Schaub, Vince Young and David freaking Gerrard at QB. I heard they were pretty close to adding this player to the roster…..

Quinn

(You thought I had a Kyle Boller joke prepared there! Oh you of little faith…..)

Also, since Drew Forrester, Nestor Aparicio, Ray Bachman and I will be in South Florida at the time, I’m on call if the team needs another QB. Unfortunately, I probably throw the ball WAAAAY too much like Uncle Rico to be of help….

5-WWE Royal Rumble (Sunday 8pm from Atlanta live on Pay-Per-View)

I’ve always been a fan of the Royal Rumble. 30 dudes, 1 ring, 1 shot at going to Wrestlemania. It always works for me……

I’m also big fans of any event that involves Michelle McCool……

mccool

4-Strikeforce Miami (Saturday 10pm from Sunrise, FL live on Showtime)

Is there ANY reason for me to want to watch a 47 year old football player fight???

herschel

Of course not. Will I do it anyway? Yes, yes of course I will. Also on the card? A gal who could kick my ass with her fingertips….

And a pro wrestling/MMA badass that is near the level of Samuel L. Jackson…….

3-College Basketball: Miami @ Maryland (Tuesday 7pm from Comcast Center live on ESPNU), Maryland @ Clemson (Sunday 5:30pm from Clemson, SC live on Comcast SportsNet locally/Fox Sports Net nationally); Towson @ UNC Wilmington (Saturday 6pm live on MASN); Binghamton @ UMBC (Wednesday 7pm RAC Arena); Fairfield @ Loyola (Thursday 7pm Reitz Arena), Niagara @ Loyola (Sunday 3pm Reitz Arena)

For the record, I will be rooting like CRAZY for the Terps to kick some Tigers ass on Sunday night. BUT…..I want to be the first to point out that I am not fully against everything Clemson University-related……

clemson

2-College Football: Under Armour Senior Bowl (Game Saturday 3pm; Practice Tuesday-Thursday 9:30am & 1:45pm, Friday 9:30 & 10:30am. All football from Mobile, AL live on NFL Network)

Ready for some NFL Draft porn????

tebowducassemaysmccluster

1-Tennis: Australian Open (Tuesday 3:30am & 9pm live on ESPN2, 7pm live on Tennis Channel; Wednesday 3:30am & 9:30pm live on ESPN2, 7pm live on Tennis Channel; Thursday 3:30am live on ESPN2, 11pm live on Tennis Channel-Women’s Doubles Final; Friday 3:30am live on ESPN2; Saturday 3:30am live on ESPN2-Women’s Final, 5:30am live on Tennis Channel-Men’s Doubles Final; Sunday 12am live on Tennis Channel-Mixed Doubles Final, 3:30am live on ESPN2-Men’s Final. All of this from Melbourne, AUS)

Who do you think has been more of a tease to me in my life? My high school girlfriend Kristen, or Andy Roddick. I’ll give you a hint. The one who looks better with their shirt off…….

arod

I know Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko are still in the Draw, but this is as good a chance as A-Rod has had in a while.

Please don’t ruin this for me.

Todd Bozeman 2009 Local Sports Person of the Year

Todd Bozeman 2009 Local Sports Person of the Year

Posted on 18 December 2009 by Glenn Clark

As you know, I have made it VERY clear that Tim Tebow should have won SI’s annual Sportsman of the Year award over Derek Jeter. I’ve even added that I didn’t think Derek Jeter would have even been in my Top 5 choices for the award-as Roger Federer, Tyler Hansbrough, Calvin Borel and Kobe Bryant would have all been better choices-at least in my own opinion.

The good news is that in selecting my own personal LOCAL 2009 Sports Person of the Year-I don’t have to let anyone else even offer an opinion. (Although I will note that Comcast Morning Show host Drew Forrester has chimed in to let everyone know that he agrees with my choice.)

I started this process by putting together a list of 5 nominees for this honor. Putting together the list actually wasn’t all that difficult….

Ray Rice

rice

Nick Markakis

markakis

Todd Bozeman

todd

Calvin Borel

borel

Michael Oher

oher

It’s a pretty impressive list.

Ray Rice will be the Ravens’ MVP this season-and the entire city of Baltimore has ABSOLUTELY fallen in love with him. Don’t believe me? Ask your local sports department store if they’re sold out of Ray Rice jerseys right now. He might not make the Pro Bowl in a conference with Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew and Cedric Benson-but he deserves to be there. On top of that, he’s been very involved in the community-hosting a number of charity events around town.

Nick Markakis was productive again at the plate for the Orioles-hitting nearly .300 and driving in 100 runs. He was also stellar in the field once more, tallying 13 assists in what many thought should have been a Gold Glove campaign. More importantly, he uprooted his family to move to the area, commiting himself to being a part of this community after receiving a contract extension from the O’s. He started the “Right Side Foundation” and has done a number of events with kids around town.

Calvin Borel galvanized the entire sport of horse racing by turning a 50-1 “no shot” in Mine That Bird into a Kentucky Derby champion. Just 14 days later, he came to Charm City aboard filly Rachel Alexandra and set himself up for a shot at a personal Triple Crown-which he probably would have gotten had Jess Jackson ran Rachel Alexandra in the Belmont.

Michael Oher was so unfamiliar to Ravens fans before the NFL Draft that there is no doubt the first reaction most everyone had to his selection was “Who is this O-her guy?” 8 months later, EVERYONE knows about Michael Oher. The movie “The Blind Side” was so popular it actually beat out “New Moon” for #1 at the box office in the 3rd week both were out. On top of all that, Oher has been TREMENDOUS for the Ravens-moving from right tackle to left tackle and performing at a level that might well earn him a trip to Miami.

But there’s really no doubt about which of these guys deserves to be the 2009 Local Sports Person of the Year.

It’s Bozeman in a landslide.

In calendar year 2009, the Morgan State Bears basketball team did the following:
-Traveled to College Park and beat Maryland
-Traveled to Fayetteville and beat Arkansas (just two days after putting a massive scare into Louisville at Freedom Hall)
-Claimed a 2nd straight MEAC regular season title
-Won the MEAC Tournament
-Advanced to their first ever NCAA Tournament in school history.
-Bozeman named Mid-Major and MEAC Coach of the Year

He’s revitalized not just the hoops program on Hillen Road, but the entire athletic department. And in doing so, he’s answered every doubter who said “Why would Morgan State get involved with a scumbag like Todd Bozeman?”

2009 was the year where Todd Bozeman’s story of redemption came full circle. It was one thing for him to get back into coaching, but it was quite another for him to make a statement as emphatic as he did over the last 12 months. So emphatic in fact that discussion of Bozeman no longer centers around his transgressions at Cal, but instead what he may do in the future at Morgan State or elsewhere.

Unfortunately, Bozeman’s story of redemption has been buried nationally amongst stories about Kobe Bryant returning to the top of his sport following rape charges and Michael Vick getting back to the NFL after his stint in jail. Locally, while Bozeman’s story has been covered, I’m not sure we’ve really given the story the recognition it deserves considering Morgan State tends to fall behind Maryland, Towson, UMBC, Loyola, etc. etc. in the pecking order of even local college sports.

But Todd Bozeman’s rise-and the rise of Morgan hoops as well-has been historic. In 2005-06 (the final year of Butch Beard’s tenure), the Bears won 5 games. Last season, they won 23. They’ve gon from being a college basketball also-ran within their own conference to a team that schools are afraid to schedule, and were so respected they managed to avoid a 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament despite being in a conference that is annually RPI ranked in the bottom 3. They remain a regular part of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 voting process-either ranked in the poll or receiving votes.

Bozeman’s community activity includes running basketball camps through Morgan State throughout the summer. His BIGGEST contribution off the court remains his involvement with the Bea Gaddy Family Center, an involvement that includes taking his team to the Center to serve food on Thanksgiving to help brighten the spirits of those who come.

It’s been a tremendous year for Todd Bozeman here in Baltimore, one deserving of even more recognition that I can give him-but this is my part. As far as Sports People of the Year in 2009 are concerned here in Baltimore, Bozeman was tops.

Top 10 Games of 2009

Posted on 17 December 2009 by Glenn Clark

I used to love how ESPN would put together their list of the “Top 10 Games of the Year” and air it as a SportsCenter special on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, etc. A year ago, I put together my own list for the first time a year ago, and thought it would be fun to go right back to that well. I purposely left out the “Honorable Mention” section; so it is very possible I missed an absolute classic.

10-NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship: Boston University vs. Miami Ohio (April 12 Verizon Center Washington, DC)

Bemidji State might have been the story of the Frozen Four; but the Championship game was pretty amazing. Trailing 3-1, the Terriers pulled their goalie late in the 4th quarter, and managed to close the gap to 3-2 with under a minute left in the game. Unbelievably, they managed to tally a tying goal with 19 seconds to play to send the game into overtime; and eventually won the title in OT.

9-UFC “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 Finale: Diego Sanchez vs. Clay Guida (June 20 The Palms Las Vegas, NV)

Are you kidding me???

diego

These maniacs beat the TAR out of each other for 3 rounds in an absolutely BRUTAL MMA war. There is really no doubt that this was the Fight of the Year in Mixed Martial Arts OR Boxing, even if it didn’t have the impact of a Lesnar-Mir or a Pacquiao-Cotto.

8-NHL Stanley Cup Finals Game 7: Penguins @ Red Wings (June 12 Joe Louis Arena Detroit)

penguins

No matter how a game plays out, Game 7 is always exciting. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals is monumental. But a Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 with the drama of Wings-Pens is absolutely epic. The build-up (rematch of the Cup finals from the season before, quest for Sidney Crosby’s first Cup, Wings dynasty, etc.) was intense; the 4th quarter flurry that was stopped by Marc-Andre Fleury was heart-stopping.

7-The Open Championship (July 16-19 Turnberry Resort Ayrshire, Scotland)

cinkwatson

Admit it. There was golf on, Tiger Woods was irrelevant-and you watched anyway. The British Open tends not to register with me because it’s ugly to look at, involves brutal golf and is played too early in the day for my liking. BUT-I watched. I watched every hole on Sunday in fact. Part of me watched because I couldn’t wait to text Drew Forrester and say “If a 59 year old wins one of your most significant events-what you are doing probably isn’t really a sport.” But as I watched, I was captivated. The drama was amazing, and Stewart Cink proved to be a deserving champion.

6-ACC Lacrosse: Maryland @ Virginia (March 28 Klockner Stadium Charlottesville, VA)

Making this game even more significant was the fact that it was seen nationally on ESPN2. There might not have been games as long as this one was….say….EVER, but there were arguably games that were played at just as high a level during the season (including the National Championship game and Towson/Hopkins for sure). However, those games may not have had the impact of this one-as it was played on a Saturday afternoon on national TV, a time that is traditional for sports viewing across the country. Maryland fans will say they got “screwed” by a bad whistle, and they might be right.

5-FINA World Championships Men’s 100 Meter Butterfly (Aug 1 Rome, ITA)

[dailymotion]http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xa19tw_phelps-100-butterfly-4982-wr-rome-0_sport[/dailymotion]

The entire week of the World Championships leading up to this race in Rome were kinda weird. Swimmers continued to wear the soon-to-be-banned scientifically advanced swimsuits, which made Michael Phelps (wearing his older Speedo suit) appear to be mortal. It also allowed Milorad Cavic to start flapping his gums about the world’s greatest swimmer, and set up for a classic. Phelps was up to the task, beating Cavic in world record time in what was the moment of the year in the world of swimming.

4-NBA Finals Game 4: Lakers @ Magic (June 11 Amway Arena Orlando, FL)

When the ball ended up in Derek Fisher’s hands at the end of this game, was ANYONE surprised these teams went to overtime? He’s starting to move into Robert Horry territory. The NBA Finals may have lacked the atmosphere and intensity that a LeBron James-Kobe Bryant matchup would have provided, but Game 4 was thrilling nonetheless and turned into a series changer.

3-Big East Tournament Quarterfinal: UConn vs. Syracuse (March 12-13 Madison Square Garden New York, NY)

If this had been a more significant game, there would have been NO DOUBT this would have been #1 on this list. The game itself was thrilling from start to finish, with Jonny Flynn and Andy Rautins playing hero for the Orange. Watching this game on a Thursday night, it was particularly disturbing because I just couldn’t bring myself to go to bed before it ended at 1:22am, knowing I had to be up just a couple hours later for my Comcast Morning Show duties.

2-Wimbledon Gentleman’s Final (July 5 All England Lawn & Tennis Club Wimbledon, ENG)

wimbledon

NO ONE thought Roddick-Federer would provide the drama of Federer-Nadal a year earlier. Maybe it didn’t, but it certainly didn’t fail to captivate. A 16-14 5th set would make a Taylor Dent-Vince Spadea match interesting; but it made Federer’s pursuit of Pete Sampras’ career slam record that much more surreal. This was undoubtedly the greatest single match performance of Andy Roddick’s career-which will ultimately be defined by not being quite at the level of Federer and Nadal.

1-Super Bowl XLIII (February 1 Raymond James Stadium Tampa, FL)

43

You saw the game. I don’t need to explain why this is number 1. Mostly because if I have to say one more nice thing about Pittsburgh I might vomit.
