Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 14 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Tennis-Davis Cup: Team USA vs. Columbia (Friday 11am Saturday 12pm Sunday 11am from Bogota, Columbia live on Tennis Channel); NHL-Philadelphia Flyers rookies @ Washington Capitals rookies (Thursday 3pm Kettler Capitals IcePlex)

10. HFStival feat. Third Eye Blind, Billy Idol, Everclear, Ed Kowalczyk from Live and more (Saturday 12pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Crosby, Stills & Nash (Wednesday 7:30pm Pier Six Pavilion), Several Species (Saturday 7pm Pier Six Pavilion), Widespread Panic (Sunday 6:30pm Pier Six Pavilion); Rush (Saturday 7:30pm Jiffy Lube Live); Mr. Greengenes (Friday 8pm Power Plant Live); Chiddy Bang (Thursday 7:30pm University of Maryland Grand Ballroom); Good Charlotte (Tuesday 7:30pm Bourbon Street), Trainwreck featuring Kyle Gass from Tenacious D (Monday 8pm Bourbon Street)

What’s happening at Merriweather Saturday is by NO MEANS the “HFStival”, but it actually does look like something I would attend…for free. Especially after I think back on the memories of the HFStival at M&T Bank Stadium and Billy Idol kicking ASS in the rain. Does anyone have video of “Mony Mony” from that show? His Storytellers performance will have to do for now…

Oh right, Everclear will be there too. I enjoy Everclear…

You probably haven’t heard of Chiddy Bang, but I feel like you should have…

And hate on them all you want, but I DIG Good Charlotte. Not just because of Benji Madden’s Orioles tattoos-but also because “Festival Song” is a life anthem for me…

9. Halo: Reach available on XBox 360 (Tuesday), Linkin Park “A Thousand Suns” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday)

I would tell you something about Halo: Reach here, but I know absolutely NOTHING about Halo: Reach, Halo: Crest, Halo: Fallen, or anything else like that.

Instead, I figured I’d post a picture of a sexy video game nerd girl and just move on from there. When I Google Image Searched “sexy nerd”, Sarah Shahi came up for some reason…

shahi

I don’t know why she’s listed as a sexy nerd, but if this is ANY type of nerd…I’ll start playing EVERY VIDEO GAME IN THE WORLD tomorrow.

8. High School Football: Perry Hall @ Tuscarora (Thursday 7pm), Annapolis @ Glen Burnie (Thursday 6:30pm)

As I am officially “old” at 27 (yeah, it makes me OLD. Just the way it is. I’ve accepted it.), I no longer know what’s “cool” amongst high school kids. I thought it might be POGS, but apparently that was what was cool with MIDDLE school kids…when I was in middle school.

I thought maybe it was prune juice, but apparently that’s what’s popular with folks whose GRANDKIDS are in high school.

I finally decided to consult the internet. The internet knows everything. You know what they said was big amongst high school kids this year? You might remember it being popular during your own high school years…

Smoking.

Ridiculous. Smoking is gross. You could get lung cancer. You could die. Or WORSE-you could end up looking like Amy Winehouse!!!

winehouse

7. Soccer: NASL-Carolina RailHawks @ Crystal Palace Baltimore (Saturday 5pm Paul Angelo Russo Stadium Calvert Hall), MLS-DC United @ LA Galaxy (Saturday 10pm from Los Angeles live on Fox Soccer Channel); College Soccer-Maryland @ Loyola (Tuesday 7pm Ridley Athletic Complex), Loyola @ Towson (Sunday 1pm Towson Center Field), La Salle @ UMBC (Wednesday 7pm UMBC Stadium)

I love Greyhounds coach Mark Mettrick. I would love him more if his name was “Terrapins coach Mark Mettrick.” Unfortunately the guy who has that job is pretty freaking good.

Anyway, DC United plays LA Galaxy this week. Sadly, I could not find the clip of Joe Lo Truglio screaming for the Galaxy from “I Love You Man.” Instead, you’ll have to settle for the clip of Joe Lo Truglio working as a weightlifting spotter…

6. Boxing: Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora (Saturday 9pm from Los Angeles live on HBO PPV)

With no offense to Shane Mosley…or boxing in general…I’m just not that interested in this. Or just about anything else the sport could offer anymore.

But the real question is how could Shane Mosley stand a CHANCE against a real boxer when he BARELY beat Shaquille O’Neal???

5. Auto Racing: NASCAR Sylvania 300 (Sunday 1pm from Loudon, NH live on ESPN), IndyCar Series Indy Japan 300 (Saturday 11pm from Motegi, Tochigi live on VERSUS)

Japan was the only place Danica Patrick has managed to pick up an IndyCar victory in her career. Oh hey look-here’s a picture of Danica Patrick in a bikini from the SI photo shoot she did who knows how long ago…

danica

4. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC Fight Night-Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares (Wednesday 8pm from Austin, TX live on SpikeTV)

I don’t know how many times I can explain that events like this are why MMA continues to grow at historic levels. These are QUALITY fighters on a free, over-the-air, well-promoted card.

However, what the hell else are they showing on SpikeTV these days? What is 1000 Ways to Die? I don’t understand it AT ALL…

3. Pro Wrestling: WWE Night of Champions (Sunday 8pm from Chicago live on Pay-Per-View)

There are rumors floating around that there is a contract dispute between Chris Jericho and WWE, and this could be Y2J’s final appearance. I cannot stress…AT ALL…what an incredible mistake that would be on the part of Vince McMahon and company.

Why? This is why.

2. College Football: Maryland @ West Virginia (Saturday 12pm from Morgantown, WV live on ESPNU), Navy @ Louisiana Tech (Saturday 7pm from Ruston, Louisiana live on ESPN3.com), Towson @ Villanova (Saturday 3:30pm from Philadelphia live on Comcast SportsNet)

Dear Lord. Please…oh PLEASE do not allow a grown man who dresses up like Davy Crockett to be happy on Saturday…

wvu

People make fun of the fact that we havea turtle as a mascot in College Park. The Mountaineers have Davy FREAKING Crockett.

1. NFL: Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday 1pm from Cincinnati live on CBS-WJZ 13 locally)

Look, I DON’T like Chad Ochocinco. Trust me on that. I hope Ray Lewis pops him in the mouth twice as hard as he did at M&T Bank Stadium last year. But when the guy’s funny, the guy’s funny…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because the World Cup starts tomorrow, which gives us one more thing to pay attention to besides baseball. Some folks don’t think Spain should be favored to win the Cup. Apparently those people haven’t wandered over to Deadspin to see the UNBELIEVABLE way they moved the ball for a goal against Poland…

They’re…ummm…good.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Sabathia’s arm, Cano’s glove, Luke Scott’s glove helped Yankees top Orioles again

Another inspired performance last night at OPACY, and by “inspired” I mean ZZZZZZZ….

As if beating CC Sabathia wasn’t tough enough, Chris Tillman and Cesar Izturis (as well as Luke Scott) thought defense blunders might help the cause. Of course, Tillman threw pretty well and Izturis had two hits (if he gets 3 tonight, I owe Drew Forrester a dollar!), but sadly-you have to do more than one thing well in baseball to win.

Last night was really one of those “unwatchable” types of games we’ve grown so accustomed to. The weather sucked, the stadium was empty, there was no excitement, there was no interest, there was no passion, there was no way to enjoy watching the game.

16-43 now. Why shouldn’t the team be under .300? All of the hitters in the lineup are…

2. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of another loss

16,451 tickets sold to a game against New York???

This is BAD.

I certainly didn’t go to the game last night, so I can’t even begin to estimate how many folks might have actually been in the building-but if they can’t sell tickets when the Yanks are in town, they’re in real trouble.

And by “real trouble”, I mean that if future games against the Bronx Bombers and Boston Red Sox are attended at an equally poorly level; this franchise could be in trouble.

They have to make money. The MASN TV deal will help them a great deal over the next few years, but it can’t save the future of the franchise. Only winning can do that.

For the record, Garrett Atkins had a hit and a RBI last night. Take that, haters.

3. The Sun’s Dan Connolly says Rick Dempsey ‘wants to’ manage, hasn’t talked to Andy MacPhail or Peter Angelos

And apparently he’s only ever had one formal discussion with Andy MacPhail during Andy’s tenure in Charm City. Hard to believe.

I’m not as much in the Rick Dempsey camp as some others in town are. I think his relationship with Peter Angelos is one of the reasons why he’s NOT an ideal candidate. This team doesn’t need a manager that will work as a “yes man” for a DREADFUL owner. I don’t know that Rick Dempsey IS that guy, but I know he’s came off that way in interviews.

Speaking of potential managerial candidates, if you missed former Milwaukee Brewers/Detroit Tigers/Houston Astros manager Phil Garner this morning on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST, make sure you head on over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault to check it out. Other guests this morning included our own O’s reporter Luke Jones; as well as our World Cup analysis with Loyola coach Mark Mettrick and Maryland soccer coach Sasho Cirovski.

4. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Arrieta to make first start of MLB career tonight for O’s vs. Yanks

Well…no pressure.

Not exactly the way you’d want to make your major league debut, but I guess you have to make your debut against someone. When you’re debuting for the worst team in baseball, no matter who you go up against-they’re going to be better than you.

Of course, according to the man selected by “The Great Arbitrator” as “Apologist of the Morning” today-James Baker from Oriole Post-it isn’t fair. Baker says….

“Strasburg gets the Pirates; Arrieta gets the Yankees. If that doesn’t illustrate the gaping difference between the AL East and the NL East then I don’t know what will.”

Well James, I know this much. The NL East doesn’t have a single team in the division that has just 16 wins.

5. MLB.com’s Noah Rosenstein says John “T-Bone” Shelby’s son Jeremy Shelby amongst those selected by Birds on Day 3 of MLB Entry Draft

A lot of great players have been found on the final day of the Draft. Mike Piazza is of course the name that jumps out at everyone.

I’d break down more about the team’s picks in the 40th or 47th Rounds, but none of you would care. So instead I’ll pass along the picture of Alessia Ventura that was posted at Busted Coverage…

alessia

6. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Armanda Gabino, Rhyne Hughes had big night on farm

And before we move on from the Orioles, a reminder that the Birds ARE back in action tonight-Jake Arrieta faces AJ Burnett with first pitch at 7:05pm from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. You can see the game on MASN, where Eddie Murray has actually really added something to a series that would otherwise be dreadful to watch.

I’d say I think the Orioles could win tonight…if I thought the Orioles could win tonight. I really just hope Arrieta can go 6 innings. I’m just not necessarily expecting it.

7. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says veteran DB’s Ken Lucas, Walt Harris, Ken Hamlin trying out with Ravens during Passing Camp

What we know about these three:

-Lucas is a 6 foot, 31 year old veteran who has split his career between the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers-having returned to the Emerald City last season. He compiled 6 interception seasons in both 2004 and 2005, but tallied just 1 a season ago.

-Harris is a 5’11″, 35 year old veteran who has played for the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers. He made the Pro Bowl in 2006, but missed all of last season with a torn ACL.

-Hamlin is a 6’2″, 29 year old veteran safety who has split his career between the Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a Pro Bowler in 2007, but played in just 12 games in 2009.

None of the players in this bunch is “the answer” in the secondary, but they could offer some help.

8. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says team will wear black alternate uniforms October 10 vs. Denver Broncos, November 28 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, December 19 vs. New Orleans Saints at M&T Bank Stadium

A lot of people really care what color jerseys the team wears at home. While I think the black really IS a sharp look, I’m not the type of person that feels like it really matters that much.

You know who really DOES look good in black? Winnie Cooper herself, Danica McKellar. Thanks Maxim!

winnie

9. The Sun’s Ken Murray says Le’Ron McClain signed one year tender

The Ravens are back in action today at 1 Winning Drive, Luke Jones and I will be over in Owings Mills to cover everything going on-and if the team signs one of these veteran DB’s, we’ll get it to you via our WNST Text Service. Also make sure you’re following on Twitter, you can follow us @WNST.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Jared Gaither has returned to practice. My guess is no, but we’ll find out.

10. UMTerps.com says Xavier assistant Bino Ranson officially hired to join Gary Williams’ staff

We missed him this morning because he actually has a JOB to do, but we’ll have Bino with us tomorrow morning at 8:05 on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST.

In the meantime, a congratulations both to him and to the University, as this appears to be a tremendous hire. Bino’s connections to Juan Dixon clearly played a major role in getting the St. Frances Academy alum to College Park, and he’ll be expected to help keep Baltimore talent in-state.

I can already tell you he won’t get it all. No one could have swerved Josh Selby to Maryland instead of Kansas. But if he gets more than they HAVE been getting in College Park, it will make a lot of us happy.

11. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland to open with Seattle, College of Charleston at Comcast Center in Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

Both of these are tricky teams, as the Redhawks got wins over Utah and Oregon State last season, while the Cougars managed to pick up wins over Davidson and North Carolina.

Should either of these games be trip-ups for a young Maryland team? No. Should I be tripped up by sexy pictures of Rachael Cordingley ahead of Team USA’s showdown with England Saturday? Well, maybe…

cordingley

12. The Diamondback/Terrapin Trail’s Jeremy Schneider says Debbie Yow still doesn’t see Maryland leaving ACC for Big Ten

Don’t even get me started. I don’t like anything about the conference re-alignment situation, and I’m not convinced that Maryland would be helped by moving into the Big Ten in EITHER sport. Yes, it means they get Big Ten Network money, and games against Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State every few years at Byrd Stadium. But they lose hoops games against Carolina and Duke.

It might be good for money. It might be good for competition in basketball.

I’m just not sure I like anything about it.

13. The Sun’s Jeff Barker says Morgan State lost 2 basketball scholarships, 3 football scholarships due to academic progress

Rumor has it that by “academic progress”, they actually meant “disturbing fans”…

drew

This is SOMEWHAT serious, but a difficult situation for Todd Bozeman and Donald Hill-Eley. To get talent in the MEAC, you have to take a shot on some kids that have less than desirable academic standards. It’s a tough spot.

And finally, I leave you with this.

Here’s the video of Jeremy Roenick crying after the Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup last night. I know he’s a tough guy and all, but isn’t there no crying in NHL Hockey???

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 08 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: WNBA-New York Liberty @ Washington Mystics (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet); Boxing-Friday Night Fights: David Lemiuex vs. Elvin Ayala (Friday 8:30pm from Montreal live on ESPN2); AHL Calder Cup Finals: Hershey Bears/Texas Stars (Game 4 Wednesday 8:30pm from Austin, TX live on Comcast SportsNet, Game 5 Friday 8:30pm from Austin, TX live on Comcast SportsNet); Golf: PGA Tour St. Jude Classic (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Memphis), LPGA State Farm Classic (Thursday-Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from Springfield, IL live on Golf Channel)

10. Foreigner & Styx (Saturday 7pm Jiffy Lube Live), Carole King & James Taylor (Tuesday 8pm Verizon Center), They Might Be Giants (Saturday 1pm Rams Head Live), Chubby Checker (Wednesday 8pm Rams Head On Stage), Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek (Wednesday 9pm Sonar), Rob Schneider (Friday-Sunday DC Improv), Drake (Sunday 9pm 9:30 Club), Conan O’Brien (Tuesday 8pm D.A.R. Constitution Hall), Jimmy Cliff/Sly & Robbie (Thursday 8pm Wolf Trap)

There are somethings to like here. For example, I could probably repeat every word of the Styx episode of Vh1 Behind The Music. Even I was pissed when Tommy Shaw made fun of “Lady” during Damn Yankees concerts. Oh, and “Renegade” is a FREAKING.GREAT.SONG.

I sorta hated Chubby Checker growing up because every time I heard “Limbo Rock” I was reminded that I was a fat kid with no flexibility. Think I had issues? My best friend Matt Besche and I also walked around the halls of Chapel Hill Elementary School grabbing each other’s cheeks and saying “Chubby Checker” for no reason. It was our own secret handshake. Don’t judge, a-holes.

Saying I own the Talib Kweli/Mos Def disc gives me street cred, right? No. Damn. Do I just pretend like I don’t like him then?

9. Honfest (Friday-Sunday “The Avenue” in Hampden), Great Grapes! (Saturday & Sunday 12pm Oregon Ridge Park)

In Southern California-girls in bikinis are celebrated.

In Las Vegas, girls in negligee are celebrated.

In Alabama, girls in sexy sundresses are celebrated.

In New York, girls in tight shirts and short skirts are celebrated.

In Hampden….big glasses and bigger hair???

honfest

And to think, some folks wonder why people never leave Charm City…

8. “The A-Team” out in theaters (Friday)

You can say whatever you want. I’m excited. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson might not be “Mr. T”, but I still get excited whenever I just hear the music…

7. Auto Racing: NASCAR Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 (Sunday 1pm from Brooklyn, MI live on TNT)

I have no idea what is going on in the world of NASCAR. I really don’t. I know Kurt Busch won the races in Charlotte, but I don’t know who won the races at Pocono. TNT showed “Talladega Nights” throughout the day Sunday after they showed the race, and it reminded me that when I saw the trailer for Will Ferrell’s new movie “The Other Guys” before I saw “Get Him to the Greek” Saturday night, I was fairly impressed…

He’s fooled me before, but I have a good feeling about this one. At least a better feeling than I had about “Kicking and Screaming.” Ugh.

6. Ravens Passing Camp (Monday-Thursday; availability Tuesday 1 Winning Drive)

PLEASE SOMEONE LET ME KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON WITH DIGGER BUJNOCH!!!

Another radio person in town…who is not REALLY a sports person but does sports now…was out in Owings Mills for Rookie Camp last week. When I asked him why he was there, he said “I love football. I’d watch anyone play football.” He then proceeded to tell me he couldn’t see enough of the field. There were about 25 players on the field. If we’re lucky, a third of them will ever play a snap for the Baltimore Ravens.

Sadly, it remains at LEAST as relevant as anything the Baltimore Orioles are doing right now, including dismissing their manager.

5. Pro Wrestling: TNA Slammiversary (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View)

There are a couple of reasons to watch TNA’s biggest PPV event of the year, even if your name isn’t Kris Cumberland.

A-I love everything about Rob Van Dam. Seriously, the guy is about as good as it gets.

B-The more I found out about Lacey Von Erich (thus far only via image), the more I think I like her…
lve

4. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC 115: Chuck Liddell vs. Rich Franklin (Saturday 10pm from Vancouver live on Pay-Per-View); Bellator Fighting Championships XXI (Thursday 8pm from Orlando live on Fox Sports Net)

The reason none of you told me Eric “ButterBean” Esch was fighting in MMA was???

butterbean

Word is he’ll be on “The MMA Report” with John Rallo Tuesday afternoon on AM1570 WNST. In the meantime, the UFC 115 main event was only exciting because Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell like legitimately hate each other. Rich Franklin and Chuck Liddell are just legitimately old.

3. NBA Playoffs-NBA Finals: Lakers/Celtics (Game 3 Tuesday 9pm from Boston live on ABC, Game 4 Thursday 9pm from Boston live on ABC, Game 5 Sunday 8pm from Boston live on ABC)

You mean to tell me that the Nate Robinson that is contributing for the C’s these days is the same Nate Robinson that once shot on the wrong basket in New York and pissed off Mike D’Antoni???

How am I supposed to feel good for the guy? At least he did something cool with David Letterman once…

2. NHL Playoffs-Stanley Cup Finals: Flyers/Blackhawks (Game 6 Wednesday 8pm from Philadelphia live on NBC, Game 7 if necessary Friday 8pm from Chicago live on NBC)

I’m sort of ASSUMING that the Blackhawks will clinch the Cup in Philly Wednesday night, but it wouldn’t stun me if the series made it back to the Windy City. If it does, I have half a feeling Michael Jordan will hit the game winning shot to finish things off. It’s just what happens at United Center.

No matter what happens, Patrick Kane better have cooler ideas for what to do with the Cup than Mario Lemieux did…

mario

1. Soccer: Baltimore County World Soccer Festival (Saturday 7:30am, throughout day-Patriot Plaza in Towson); World Cup-South Africa vs. Mexico (Friday 10am from Johannesburg, South Africa live on ESPN), Uruguay vs. France (Friday 2:30pm from Cape Town, South Africa live on ESPN), South Korea vs. Greece (Saturday 7:30am from Port Elizabeth, South Africa live on ESPN), Argentina vs. Nigeria (Saturday 10am from Johannesburg live on ESPN), England vs. United States (Saturday 2:30pm from Rustenburg, South Africa live on ABC), Algeria vs. Slovenia (Sunday 7:30am from Polokwane, South Africa live on ESPN), Serbia vs. Ghana (Sunday 10am from Pretoria, South Africa live on ESPN), Germany vs. Australia (Sunday 2:30pm from Durban, South Africa live on ABC), Netherlands vs. Denmark (Monday 7:30am from Johannesburg live on ESPN), Japan vs. Cameroon (Monday 10am from Bloemfontein, South Africa live on ESPN), Italy vs. Paraguay (Monday 2:30pm from Cape Town live on ESPN); MLS-DC United @ Seattle Sounders (Thursday 10pm from Seattle live on ESPN2)

flag

That is all.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 01 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Auto Racing-NASCAR Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 (Sunday 1pm from Pocono Raceway live on TNT), IndyCar Series Firestone 550k (Saturday 8pm from Fort Worth, TX live on VERSUS); MLL: Boston Cannons @ Chesapeake Bayhawks (Friday 7:30pm Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium); WNBA: Atlanta Dream @ Washington Mystics (Saturday 7pm Verizon Center); Boxing: Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Cotto (Saturday 10:15pm from New York live on HBO)

10. Hall & Oates (Sunday 6pm Pier Six Pavilion); Taylor Swift (Tuesday & Wednesday 7pm Verizon Center); WMZQfest Throwdown feat. Montgomery Gentry & Little Big Town (Sunday 2:15pm Jiffy Lube Live); Pscyhadelic Furs & She Wants Revenge (Tuesday 7pm Rams Head Live), Passion Pit (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live); Lil’ Kim (Saturday 9pm Sonar); Broken Bells (Monday 7:30pm 9:30 Club); Aisha Tyler (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv); Denis Leary (Wednesday 8pm Warner Theatre); Toby Keith (Saturday 7:30pm Aberdeen Proving Ground); Jeff Beck (Monday 7:30pm Wolf Trap); Jack Johnson “To The Sea” available in stores (Tuesday); U2-360 live from the Rose Bowl available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

I’d like to say there’s a lot of really good music on this list. Of course, I can’t actually say that-because I’m really bad at lying.

I feel like I should be more into Hall & Oates than I am…

I’m not the biggest fan of country music, but I AM a fan of Little Big Town…

I have a friend who graduated from the University of Oklahoma. When she gets uppity about how good the Sooners are at football, I bring her back to earth by reminding her that Toby Keith played football for the Sooners, and he’s a clown. Although, he DID do this song…

9. AIFA-Erie Storm @ Baltimore Mariners (Saturday 7pm 1st Mariner Arena); AFL-Jacksonville Sharks @ Chicago Rush (Friday 8pm from Chicago live on NFL Network)

I assume that folks in Erie, PA are Steelers fans, so I feel like they’re probably terrible people that I wouldn’t like. That being said, The Wonders are from Erie…

…and Tom Hanks > every other person on the planet. So I’m kinda torn…

8. Golf: PGA Tour-The Memorial presented by Morgan Stanley (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Dublin, Ohio), Champions Tour Principal Charity Classic (Friday & Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from West Des Moines, Iowa live on Golf Channel)

With Phil Mickelson on his heels, Tiger Woods returns this week. I’m getting to the point where I ALMOST feel bad for him. This guy’s life went from totally awesome to completely terrible. Of course, if it hadn’t-the only thing we’d be able to talk about is golf, and that’s freaking terrible.

You know, I could sit here and BS about a sport that I literally pay less attention to than I do to this season of Glee; or I could just post this video of Joslyn James talking about Tiger’s anatomy. Seriously, it’s golf. What am I supposed to do here? And I know you’ll be surprised by this, but this video is probably NSFW. Unless you work at a place where people talk about sex organs openly. You know, like the Hallmark store.

[metacafe]http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4407489/joslyn_james_talks_tiger_woods_s_penis_on_playboy_radio/[/metacafe

7. "Get Him To The Greek" opens in theaters (Friday), John Waters "Role Models" book signing (Saturday 7pm Atomic Books)

1-Forgetting Sarah Marshall was HILARIOUS. That doesn't mean Get Him To The Greek will definitely be hilarious, but it at least gives it a shot...

2-Russell Brand is married to or going to marry Katy Perry. I should look that up, but it sounds remarkably boring. However, Katy Perry isn’t unattractive. That makes Russell Brand movies better.

3-The John Waters book signing gives me an excuse to post his freaking great interview with David Letterman from 1986. Or as I like to call it, “the greatest moment of all time EVER.”

6. Soccer: Team USA vs. Australia (Saturday 8:30am from Rustenberg, South Africa live on ESPN2); U.S. Open Cup: Real Salt Lake @ DC United (Wednesday 7:30pm RFK Stadium), MLS: Real Salt Lake @ DC United (Saturday 7:30pm from RFK Stadium live on Comcast SportsNet & MLS Direct Kick)

Chances of Glenn Clark being awake at 8:30 on Saturday to watch our boys kick some Kiwi ass? Slim. Unless of course you’re an establishment that makes beer mugs out of bacon…

bacon

5. Belmont Stakes (Saturday 5pm from Belmont Park, NY live on ABC)

Since I won’t be making the final leg of the Triple Crown, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would just be willing to come over and make me a handful of these…

breeze

And by “someone come over”, I really mean “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” needs to have Google searched “Belmont Breeze ingredients” before I finish this blog.

4. NHL Playoffs-Stanley Cup Finals: Flyers/Blackhawks (Game 3 Wednesday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 4 Friday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 5 if necessary Sunday 8pm from Chicago live on NBC)

I will be forced to admit that I haven’t watched even a second of the Stanley Cup Finals thus far. I watched lacrosse Saturday night, and WWE Raw Monday night. Apparently Game 1 got good ratings though, so Mazel Tov.

That being said, if the Blackhawks win the Cup-this is how I will celebrate…

3. NBA Playoffs-NBA Finals: Lakers/Celtics (Game 1 Thursday 9pm from Los Angeles live on ABC, Game 2 Sunday 8pm from Los Angeles live on ABC)

I’m rooting for LA in this one by default, mostly because I hate everything that has to do with Boston. In fact, I think Everlast (from House of Pain-you’ll remember he wore a Celtics jersey in the “Jump Around” video) should be arrested for what he did to Johnny Cash…

This is really difficult too, especially knowing that Maria Menounos roots for the C’s. She seems nice…

maria

2. Tennis: French Open (Tuesday-Thursday 8am live on Tennis Channel, 12pm live on ESPN2; Friday 11am live on NBC; Saturday & Sunday 9am live on NBC. All action from Paris.)

So, Robby Ginepri’s loss to Novak Djokovic left no American men at Roland Garros. Again. My little cousins are better at playing in clay than American men are. I’ll revert back to rooting for Robin Soderling and whoever else is playing against Roger Federer. It’s pretty much how I’ve handled my love of tennis since Andre Agassi retired. And I can always root for Jelena Janokvic in the meantime???

jankovic

Nope. Too weird.

1. Ravens Rookie Camp (Wednesday & Thursday, 1 Winning Drive), Ravens Rookie Show (Wednesday 7pm Casey’s in Towson-airing Thursday on AM1570 WNST), Ravens Roost Convention (Thursday-Sunday; Parade Saturday-Ocean City)

Don’t you dare be the guy that says “Is there gonna be enough food at Casey’s to feed Terrence Cody???” I expect better from you. And I’ve already giggled about it in my mind about a hundred times before now.

You know what the best thing is about the Ravens event in Ocean City this weekend? Intern Genna works in Ocean City…

genna

Intern Genna > Santa Claus.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 25 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s a Happy Tuesday for me because while everyone else in the world is down on the lineup announcement for the comeback of the HFStival…I actually think the event was made just for me, as I’m pretty sure I’ve seen ALL of these bands at Merriweather Post Pavilion before…

Third Eye Blind? Check.

Everclear? Check.

Fuel? You know it.

Look, there’s NO chance this is a festival worth paying $25-$40 and service charges to go see-and it’s a little embarrassing that they’re trying to pass it off as if it is, but if they decide they want to do it for free like Virgin Fest did last year, I’m all in! I LOVED the 90′s!

Hell, I might even call my 10th grade girlfriend to see if she wants to go with me again. Or at least to see if her husband is out of jail yet and if she knows where her kids are.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. Carroll County Times’ Josh Land says Dave Trembley survived off day, continues as O’s manager

And as of 8:30 Tuesday morning, he was STILL the manager.

Are we going to do this all season? Every time the Orioles come home, or every time they have an off day we speculate about the future of Dave Trembley?

I understand the team is 14-31. I wouldn’t be the LEAST bit upset if they decided to dismiss Dave Trembley and let Juan Samuel handle things the rest of the way. But I wouldn’t sign off on bringing in Tom Kelly right now and keeping the team from doing a FULL managerial search in the offseason.

Word is that Andy MacPhail and Peter Angelos met yesterday to discuss the team, and according to The Sun’s Dan Connolly, they’ve been meeting a bit more often recently. So, at least we have that going for us. Who knows, maybe one day all of the meetings will result in some sort of progress?!

But at least they’re meeting, which means…..Peter Angelos is still aware he owns the ballclub? I checked in with UnPeterAngelos on Twitter for his update…

“Heated meeting today. McPhail keeps fighting me on my idea to outsource Dave Trembley’s position to India. They can do anything over there.

Meeting.Of.The.Minds.

2. The AP/STATS’ Mike Lipka previews Orioles-Athletics series starting tonight

Yeah, THIS is the guy who’s starting for the A’s tonight…

dallasbraden

Apparently Dallas Braden is very proud of his background in Stockton, California. He, his tattoo AND his thumb will all be on display tonight at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, when he faces Jeremy Guthrie and the Birds. First pitch on MASN is at 7:05pm.

I’m guessing announced attendance at OPACY will be about 15,000. The weather is nice. So nice that Drew Forrester and Nestor Aparicio are trying to convince me to go to the game with them tomorrow night. They might even get me to go.

3. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Chris Tillman, Steve Bumbry had big night on farm for Birds

And apparently the Nofolk Tides did NOT use Frank Mata in a save situation last night, leading many people to believe that he may be on his way to Charm City to replace Alfredo Simon, who is likely DL bound. Koji Uehara is also likely DL bound, and it looks more and more likely that David Hernandez will head to the bullpen, and either Tillman or Jake Arrieta will be coming up to replace him in the rotation.

Hernandez is scheduled to face Gio Gonzalez Thursday, and obviously Chris Tillman wouldn’t be ready to make that start. Given yesterday’s off day-the Birds could move up Brad Bergesen to Thursday, and slide in Tillman this weekend.

Doesn’t this all just sound so exciting?!?!?!

And before we move on from the Orioles, congratulations to Peter Schmuck, whose “you win some and you lose some” blog about Koji Uehara yesterday made him a RUNAWAY winner for Apologist of the Morning. “The Great Arbitrator” didn’t have much of a selection this morning, as Peter’s offering was a RUNAWAY winner.

4. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens CB Lardarius Webb ‘on schedule’ after visit to Dr. James Andrews

Which means we remain at status quo. “On schedule” doesn’t mean he can take the field at McDaniel College in late July necessarily, but it MIGHT mean he can take the field September 13th in East Rutherford.

Of course, if he misses the August 12th exhibition opener against the Carolina Panthers at M&T Bank Stadium, he might not be alone. O.A.R. and Citizen Cope are playing Merriweather that night, so I’ve been thinking about tagging out to Luke Jones.

Don’t judge.

5. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Fabian Washington also visited Birmingham, says he’ll be ready for Training Camp

Which is a shame for him, because if he was at home-he’d have more time to check out the pictures of Candice Swanepoel over at Guyism…

swanepoel

Of course, having Fabian Washington back will be good news for the Ravens, as they will have him, Domonique Foxworth and Chris Carr for sure-as well as POSSIBLY Lardarius Webb; and some mix of Cary Williams and/or Travis Fisher, and maybe even Marcus Paschal and/or Prince Miller-and you’d THINK there’s a COMPETENT group of corners in there.

I say competent because it obviously still looks like the team’s biggest area of weakness. Not that I’m trying to be a buzzkill or anything.

6. USA Today’s Sean Leahy says Ravens won’t support Super Bowl in New York

And neither does Mike Florio from ProFootballTalk.com and NBC Sports, which he told Drew this morning on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST. If you missed it, make sure you check it out in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault.

Other guests this morning included Terry Hasseltine (The Executive Director of Sports Marketing in Maryland), Delmarva Shorebirds pitcher (and former Orioles 1st round pick) Matt Hobgood, Deadspin founder Will Leitch, and WNST’s own Luke Jones. Check all of it out in the Audio Vault as well.

For the record, I’m NOT in favor of a New York (New Jersey) Super Bowl either, for much of the same reason as Steve Bisciotti. If a storm hits The Garden State that weekend the way a storm hit Baltimore on Super Bowl weekend this year, we’d be looking at playing the most significant sporting event in the world in “state of emergency” conditions.

It’s a cool idea, but I’m siding with Steve Bisciotti on this one. And not just because he has better hair than me.

7. NFL.com’s Pat Kirwan says Ravens in 2nd tier of NFL teams

I’d probably be in agreement with him, but he also has the Dallas Cowboys in Tier 1. I understand they look good on paper, but I’m not ready to include them in that group yet.

Before we move on from the Ravens, a reminder that I’ll be out at 1 Winning Drive today for Ravens Passing Camp. Make sure you’re following us on Twitter (@WNST) for news from Owings Mills, including whether or not Jared Gaither is back on the field. I’ll also be on this afternoon with Rex Snider and Ray Bachman, so stay tuned to AM1570.

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Division 1 coaching experience ‘is not going to be a requirement’ for new Maryland lacrosse coach

I personally don’t think Paul Cantabene is the coach Debbie Yow and Michael Lipitz are looking for, but I think it would be smart for them to give Stevenson’s head man a phone call.

Kevin Corrigan (Notre Dame), Jeff Tambroni (Cornell), Mike Pressler (Bryant, former Duke), Scott Marr (Albany) and Don Zimmerman (UMBC) seem like they have to be the TOP guys on the list-but I’m telling you that without having had the chance to chat with any of the decision makers with the department since Dave Cottle resigned. I could be WAY off on what it is that the school is looking for.

I just don’t get the feeling that after letting a coach go for not making the Final Four in the last four years, hiring a coach who doesn’t know a thing or two about the NCAA Tournament would probably be a mistake.

9. Inside Lacrosse’s Terry Foy says Tom and Matt Palasek granted release from Johns Hopkins, will transfer

The weird thing about this story is that growing up in New York, apparently the Palaseks were OBSESSED with becoming Blue Jays. There isn’t much known about why the Palaseks are departing the program, but there’s a thought that it might have something to do with Dave Pietramala’s coaching style.

Since I don’t know that for sure, I won’t pounce on the kids. But if it is, it’s absolutely amazing that two kids would leave a program because they didn’t like the style of a coach who has won two NCAA Championships.

We’ll see.

10. ESPN.com Scouts Inc’s Paul Biancardi gives Gary Williams ‘A-’ for basketball recruiting class

You know who else is an A- at worst? Dutzen Kroes… (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

dutzen

And finally, I leave you with this.

As someone who celebrates Championships in every variety, a Tip of the Cap to the Philadelphia Flyers for winning the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals. This one’s for Drew!

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 24 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: WNBA-Connecticut Sun @ Washington Mystics (Sunday 4pm Verizon Center); Boxing-Friday Night Fights: Eric Lucas vs. Libido Andrade (Friday 9pm from Quebec live on ESPN2); Arena Football: Tampa Bay Storm @ Orlando Predators (Friday 8pm from Orlando live on NFL Network)

10. Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Wailers (Saturday 6pm Pier Six Pavilion), Erykah Badu & N.E.R.D. (Sunday 6pm Pier Six Pavilion); Mr. Greengenes (Thursday 8pm Power Plant Live), Parachute (Saturday 8pm Power Plant Live); Toad The Wet Sprocket (Saturday 6:30 & 9:30pm Rams Head On Stage); Flyleaf (Tuesday 7pm 9:30 Club), Richard Cheese & Lounge Against The Machine (Sunday 6:30pm 9:30 Club); Brew At The Zoo feat. Charm City Devils & Kelly Bell Band (Saturday & Sunday Maryland Zoo); Stone Temple Pilots “Stone Temple Pilots” available in stores (Tuesday)

Dude, Michael Franti is so good I’ll openly advertise for another radio station in Baltimore…

There is no excuse for any human being to admit they like a band like Parachute. So of course, I kinda like Parachute…

If you’re not familiar with Richard Cheese, he does lounge versions of popular songs. Or in other words-that nerd you knew from high school found a REALLY strange way to get laid after becoming an adult…

And not only is Kelly Bell a former MCW Champion, he’s also a fine musician…

9. Golf: PGA Tour Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Fort Worth, TX); Champions Tour Senior PGA Championship (Thursday & Friday 6pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on NBC. All golf from Denver)

So apparently some 16 year old did really well in last weekend’s “Golf Tournament Open” Championship. I say “apparently” because there was no chance in hell I spent my weekend watching golf.

Of course, it certainly beats what I was doing when I was 16…

notgettinglaid

8. Ravens Passing Camp (Monday-Thursday, 1 Winning Drive-availability Tuesday); NFL Owners Meetings (Tuesday & Wednesday Dallas)

Amongst the things that will be voted on at the Meetings include whether or not the new OT rules for the playoffs will be expanded into the regular season; and whether to hold the 2014 Super Bowl in New York or Florida.

Of course, if they do choose New York, we’ll probably be subjected to “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys about a trillion more times. Which is good, because a long time ago I used to think that was a really good song.

I personally think they should send the Super Bowl back to Arizona, but I have selfish reasons…

undierun

Of course by “selfish” I meant “reasons any other warm-blooded man could certainly understand.”

7. NHL Playoffs-Stanley Cup Finals: Blackhawks/Flyers (Game 1 Saturday 8pm from Chicago live on NBC, Game 2 Monday 8pm from Chicago live on NBC)

I don’t give a crap about either of these teams, but just to piss off Drew Forrester and the rest of the effing Washington Capitals fans in Charm City, I’ll hope Philly wins.

Besides-does Patrick Kane look like a man you’d want to root for???

patrickkane

6. NBA Playoffs-Western Conference Finals: Suns/Lakers (Game 4 Tuesday 9pm from Phoenix, Game 5 Thursday 9pm from Los Angeles, Game 6 if necessary Saturday 8:30pm from Phoenix, Game 7 if necessary Monday 9pm from Los Angeles. All games live on TNT); Eastern Conference Finals: Magic/Celtics (Game 5 Wednesday 8:30pm from Orlando, Game 6 if necessary Friday 8:30pm from Boston, Game 7 if necessary Sunday 8:30pm from Orlando. All games live on ESPN.)

Steve Nash > you.

nash

Of course, I heard a rumor he was just trying to be like the great Glenn Clark…

glennclark

5. Tennis: French Open/Roland Garros (Tuesday-Friday 5am live on Tennis Channel, 12pm live on ESPN2; Saturday & Sunday 5am live on Tennis Channel, 12pm live on NBC; Monday 5am live on Tennis Channel, 12pm live on ESPN2)

Is there anything funnier than the fact that Gaston Gaudio-the tennis player from Argentina who never made it to the 2nd week of an Australian Open, Wimbledon or U.S. Open was once a French Open Champion???

Okay, this might be funnier…

The word “penis” is always hilarious. More hilarious when I yelled in it 9th grade science class when Old Mr. Alban was too old to know what was going on, but hilarious in this reference as well.

4. Soccer: Team USA vs. Czech Republic (Tuesday 8pm from Hartford live on ESPN/Galavision), Team USA vs. Turkey (Saturday 2pm from Philadelphia live on ESPN2/Galavision); NASL: Austin Aztex @ Crystal Palace Baltimore (Saturday 7pm UMBC Stadium); AC Milan @ DC United (Wednesday 8pm RFK Stadium), Chivas USA @ DC United (Saturday 7:30pm from RFK Stadium live on Comcast SportsNet & MLS Direct Kick)

The thing is, I enjoy Turkey as a concept, but certainly not as a country; and even less as an opponent for the Americans.

Then again, I’m more of a patriot than most. For example, when my neighbor’s kid asked me if I had any Justin Beiber in my iTunes, I instead put on some John Mellencamp and told him it was for his own good. And then I forced him to watch Darius Rucker cover “Family Tradition” by Hank Williams Jr….

Is there anything more American in the entire world?

3. MMA-UFC 114: Rashad Evans vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (Saturday 10pm from Las Vegas live on Pay-Per-View); Bellator Fighting Championships XX (Thursday 8pm from San Antonio live on Fox Sports Net); UFC Undisputed 2010 available in stores (Tuesday)

I think Chuck Liddell sees the main event of Saturday night’s PPV in his nightmares sometimes.

Also, I’m glad that the new UFC game is coming out. It will give me something else to play after I’ve wasted the last few days celebrating a certain anniversary Google made us all aware of…

pacman

2. Auto Racing: IndyCar Series Indianapolis 500 (Sunday 12pm from Indianapolis live on ABC), NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 (Sunday 5:45pm from Charlotte live on FOX)

There is someone named “Ana Beatriz” in Sunday’s Indy 500. It is apparently NOT this Ana Beatriz…

beatriz

But it apparently IS this Ana Beatriz…

beatriz

…so all is not lost.

You see what I did there? I went a whole IRL post without mentioning Danica Patrick. Impressive work, I know.

1. College Lacrosse-Men’s NCAA Tournament Final Four: Virginia vs. Duke (Saturday 4pm or 6:30pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on ESPN2), Cornell vs. Notre Dame (Saturday 4pm or 6:30pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on ESPN2), Championship (Monday 3:30pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on ESPN2); Men’s Division II National Championship: C.W. Post vs. LeMoyne (Sunday 3pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on CBS College Sports); Men’s Division III National Championship Game: Salisbury vs. Tufts (Sunday 12pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on CBS College Sports); Women’s NCAA Tournament Final Four: Maryland vs. Syracuse (Friday 5:30pm Unitas Stadium), North Carolina vs. Northwestern (Friday 8pm Unitas Stadium), Championship (Sunday 5:30pm from Unitas Stadium live on CBS College Sports)

At least the Terrapins women have kept up their end of the bargain, so I’ll be in Towson Friday night for sure.

As far as watching Duke or Virginia win a national championship on Memorial Day? I swear to God I’d rather spend my day watching this…

Of course, I’d rather get a root canal than watch THAT. But then again, I could probably use a root canal. Do I have Barack Obama dental care yet? Is anyone a dentist?

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 17 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention-MMA: UWC 8 (Saturday 7pm Patriot Center), Strikeforce Challengers: Matt Lindland vs. Kevin Casey (Friday 11pm from Portland, OR live on Showtime); Boxing: Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez (Saturday 10pm live from Los Angeles live on Showtime); WNBA: New York Liberty @ Washington Mystics (Friday 7pm Verizon Center); Golf: PGA Tour HP Byron Nelson Championship (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All golf from Irving, TX) LPGA Sybase Match Play Championship (Thursday & Friday 1pm, Saturday & Sunday 2pm from Gladstone, NJ live on Golf Channel); IIHF World Ice Hockey Championships (Semi-finals Saturday, Finals Sunday from Cologne, Germany live on Universal Sports); “MacGruber” and “Shrek Forever After” open in theaters (Friday), “Invictus” available on DVD & Blu-Ray (Tuesday)

10. Bamboozle Road Show feat. Good Charlotte and All Time Low (Saturday 3pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Insane Clown Posse, Kottonmouth Kings & Coolio (Thursday 5:30pm Pier Six Pavilion); Brad Paisley & Darius Rucker (Saturday 7:30pm Jiffy Lube Live); B-52′s (Saturday 8pm Rams Head Live); Nicki Minaj (Saturday 9pm Sonar); Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds (Thursday 7:30pm D.A.R. Constitution Hall), Neil Young (Monday 8pm D.A.R. Constitution Hall); Jimmy Fallon (Saturday 8pm Warner Theatre); DC101 Chili Cookoff feat. Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains and Cage The Elephant (Saturday 12:30pm RFK Stadium); Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival feat. Buddy Guy and Chuck Berry (Saturday & Sunday all day Sandy Point State Park); Anthony Bourdain & Eric Ripert (Saturday 8pm France-Merrick Performing Arts Theatre)

Or what I want to call the strangest clusterf*ck of live shows to ever hit Charm City and the surrounding areas.

Seriously, Coolio is playing a show in Baltimore this week. Did any of you know Coolio was still performing? Alive??? I’m not hating either. Coolio kicked ass…

A lot of people don’t like Good Charlotte. Don’t count me among them. Benji and Joel Madden are amongst the biggest Orioles fans on the face of the planet. We need as many of them as we can get.

When Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds have hung out together in the past, good things have been known to happen…

If I were a better son, I’d take my dad to see Chuck Berry in Annapolis. He’ll have to settle for the Beach Boys later this summer…

And Anthony Bourdain is doing a stage show. I’ll admit to not knowing much about Anthony Bourdain other than the fact that he once ate lake trout and hung with “Snoop” from The Wire on his show “No Reservations”…

9. World Series of Flip Cup (Saturday 3:30pm Recher Theatre)

Not all college athletes are competing for NCAA Championships. Some are competing for far more noble causes. Like the cause of turning over plastic red cups. And maybe in the process…if you’re an attractive female competitor…making out with your fellow competitors.

Just remember this much as you choose your team for Saturday’s showdown in Towson…

flipcup

8. Auto Racing: NASCAR All-Star Race (Saturday 9pm from Charlotte live on SPEED), NASCAR Showdown (Saturday 7:30pm from Charlotte live on SPEED); IndyCar Series Indianapolis 500 Qualifying (Saturday 11am, Sunday 12pm from Indianapolis live on VERSUS)

The thing about the All-Star Race is that NASCAR changes things to be more TV friendly.

Amongst the changes this year? It will be a football game instead of a car race.

In all seriousness, if you enjoy left turns and/or know where to find SPEED on your XFinity lineup; this is probably* worth watching on Saturday night.

*In that, if you’re at home on a Saturday night and have nothing better to watch than an exhibition car race on a channel no one has ever heard of, it might be time to start thinking about where you are in your life.

7. Tennis: French Open (Roland Garros) opening round (Sunday 12pm live on ESPN2, Monday 5am live on Tennis Channel. Action from Paris.)

You’re thinking to yourself, “this is just an excuse for Glenn to post some shirtless picture of his true love Andy Roddick.”

But you’re wrong. You see, until A-Rod wins another Grand Slam event, I’m not giving him any more of the “drooling” type of attention.

Instead, I’m excited for all of the tennis action. With Rafael Nadal healthy, he’ll be looking to re-claim his title from defending champ Roger Federer. Robin Soderling reached the final last year, Andy Murray is coming off a Grand Slam final at the Australian Open in January, and Juan Martin Del Potro is still riding high from his U.S. Open victory last September.

You know, I tried. I really tried.

Let’s go Andy!

andy

6. Pro Wrestling: WWE Over The Limit (Sunday 8pm from Detroit live on Pay-Per-View)

Why am I excited for Over The Limit? I get the feeling we might see more of The Bella Twins…

bellatwins

5. Ravens Passing Camp (Tuesday-Thursday; availability Tuesday from 1 Winning Drive)

What Joe Flacco is doing > what you’re doing.

Of course, with the new rules the Ravens passed down, I’m not sure I’m allowed to report anything Joe Flacco does in Owings Mills this week. I’ll touch on that at another time.

Before heading back to Owings Mills, Mark Clayton made a pit stop at his old stomping grounds in Norman, Oklahoma to finish off his degree. I know a gal who is a proud Oklahoma alum and huge Sooners fan, so I took to Facebook over the weekend to let her know the good news.

When she asked me what he majored in, I could only make the assumption I would make about any Oklahoma football player in the Bob Stoops era.

“I’m pretty sure it was BCS Bowl Game Losing.”

4. NHL Playoffs: Eastern Conference Finals-Flyers/Canadiens (Game 2 Tuesday 7pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 3 Thursday 7pm from Montreal live on VERSUS, Game 4 Saturday 3pm from Montreal live on NBC); Western Conference Finals-Sharks/Blackhawks (Game 2 Tuesday 10pm from San Jose live on VERSUS, Game 3 Friday 8pm from Chicago live on VERSUS, Game 4 Sunday 3pm from Chicago live on NBC)

So let me get this straight: the Habs have already made sports fans in Washington and Pittsburgh miserable; and now they have to chance to make fans in Philadelphia miserable as well? Do you think there’s a chance we could schedule them for a series against the Indianapolis Ice next, and then some random hockey team at Duke after that???

I’ve posted pictures of Youppi the last two weeks and I’ve seen the Canadiens win. I’m not going to risk doing anything else this week…

youppi

3. NBA Playoffs: Eastern Conference Finals-Celtics/Magic (Game 2 Tuesday 8:30pm from Orlando, Game 3 Saturday 8:30pm from Boston, Game 4 Monday 8:30pm from Boston. All games live on ESPN); Western Conference Finals-Suns/Lakers (Game 2 Wednesday 9pm from Los Angeles, Game 3 Sunday 8:30pm from Phoenix. All games live on TNT); NBA Draft Lottery (Tuesday 8pm from Secaucus, NJ live on ESPN)

As I said Sunday via Twitter, it’s nice to see JJ Redick continue his long-standing tradition of missing big shots in the final minutes of big games. I am by no means rooting for any team from Boston, but I know this much. No team is winning a big game with this guy on the floor late…

jj

Thanks Rich in Westminster.

As you know, I’m a Phoenix Suns fan-despite what Steve Nash did to the Terrapins back when he was with Santa Clara. It’s just hard to stay mad at the guy…

2. College Lacrosse-Men’s NCAA Tournament: Notre Dame vs. Maryland (Saturday 12pm from Princeton, NJ live on ESPNU); Men’s Division III NCAA Tournament: Roanoke @ Stevenson (Wednesday 4pm Caves Athletic Complex-semifinals Sunday; winner faces Salisbury/Haverford winner) Women’s NCAA Tournament: Penn @ Maryland (Saturday 12pm Ludwig Field); MIAA High School Lacrosse: (A Conference Semis Tuesday 6pm & 8:30pm, Conference Finals Saturday 3pm, 5:30pm & 8pm. All action from Unitas Stadium); MLL: Chesapeake Bayhawks @ Toronto Nationals (Saturday 2pm from Toronto live on ESPN2)

How convenient! I already don’t like the Fighting Irish! I won’t have to learn how to hate a new team!!!

As I like to on days where games of this magnitude are played; I will be wearing this…

1. Soccer: UEFA Champions League Final-Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan (Saturday 2:30pm from Madrid live on FOX), NASL: Portland Timbers @ Crystal Palace Baltimore (Saturday 7pm UMBC Stadium), MLS: DC United @ Houston Dynamo (Saturday 8pm from Houston live on Galavision), Team USA Women vs. Germany (Saturday 6pm from Cleveland live on ESPN2)

For those of you that aren’t aware, the Champions League Final is like the Super Bowl of European sports. Being an Italian myself, I will be pulling for Inter Milan (or Internazionale if you will), and will ABSOLUTELY be rooting for them again when they invade Baltimore this summer for a match against Manchester City at M&T Bank Stadium. Although I will admit I don’t exactly follow their every match.

Think about it though. You could root for Bayern Munich, and support a country whose greatest accomplishment is a weird pair of tight shorts with suspenders…

lederhosen

Or you could root for Inter Milan, and support a country whose greatest accomplishment looks more like this…

pizza

Is it really a question?

St. Joseph @ St. Paul’s (Wednesday 4pm); Robin Hood out in theaters (Friday)

10. Swimming: Charlotte UltraSwim (Friday-Sunday 6pm from Charlotte live on Universal Sports)

Do I have a “Michael Phelps is headed back to the pool so I should make a pot joke” joke prepared? I do not.

Instead, I pass this along. I don’t know who Chloe Sutton is (you know, other than the fact that she’s a swimmer participating in this Charlotte event), but I think I like her…

sutton

…you know, she seems nice.

9. Pro Wrestling: TNA Sacrifice (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View)

Reasons to watch a TNA Pay-Per-View:

A. Rob Van Dam is AWESOME.

B. Jeff Hardy is also AWESOME.

C. The chicks are hot.

D. WOOOO!!!!!

flair

8. Auto Racing: NASCAR Autism Speaks 400 (Sunday 1pm from Dover live on FOX)

If you’re piling on the Rex Snider bus and headed up to The Monster Mile this weekend, please say hello to this guy for me while you’re there…

Oh, and then ask Dad to try to remember to wear pants on Mother’s Day next year…geez.

7. NHL Playoffs: Blackhawks/Canucks (Game 6 Tuesday 9:30pm from Vancouver live on VERSUS, Game 7 if necessary Thursday 8pm from Chicago live on VERSUS); Canadiens/Penguins (Game 7 Wednesday 7pm from Pittsburgh live on VERSUS); Bruins/Flyers (Game 6 Wednesday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 7 if necessary Friday 7pm from Boston live on VERSUS)

You mean to tell me the Habs have a chance to make BOTH the fans in the Steel City AND the fans in Washington completely miserable in the same postseason?!?!?

I have never supported anything from Canada they way I now support the Canadiens. Like my pal Sam Angell said via Facebook, do it for Youppi!!!

youppi

6. NBA Playoffs: Cavaliers/Celtics (Game 5 Tuesday 8pm from Cleveland live on TNT, Game 6 Thursday 8pm from Boston live on ESPN, Game 7 if necessary Sunday 3:30pm from Cleveland live on ABC)

Boy, the 2nd round of the NBA Playoffs have sure been…uhh…dreadful???

I was gonna root for the Atlanta Hawks because Joe Smith is down there-but…apparently no one informed them that they beat the Bucks and actually ADVANCED to the next round. You would have thought a courtesy call would have at least been nice.

You don’t need to wonder about who I AM rooting for, as it is rather obvious. VIVA.LOS.SUNS!!!!

5. MMA-Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery (Saturday 10pm from St. Louis live on Showtime), Bellator Fighting Championships XVIII (Thursday 8pm from Monroe, LA live on Fox Sports Net); Boxing-Amir Khan vs. Paulie Malignaggi (Saturday 9:45pm from New York live on HBO)

BRETT ROGERS BRETT ROGERS BRETT ROGERS BRETT ROGERS BRETT ROGERS BRETT ROGERS!!!!!!!!!

Look, I’m well aware that he lost to Fedor, but let’s be honest here…he DIDN’T lose my heart. I LOVE “The Grim.”

4. NCAA Lacrosse Tournament: Hofstra @ Maryland (Saturday 12pm from Byrd Stadium live on ESPNU), Johns Hopkins @ Duke (Saturday 12pm from Durham live on ESPN), Loyola @ Cornell (Saturday 2:30pm from Ithica, NY live on ESPNU), Mt. St. Mary’s @ Virginia (Saturday 7:30pm from Charlottesville live on ESPNU); D3 Tournament: Cabrini/Denison winner @ Stevenson (Saturday 1pm Caves Athletic Complex)

I don’t mind that the Terps got Hofstra in Round 1 at all. Folks on Long Island are fairly easy to dislike, so I’ve got that under control. But…Hopkins playing Duke? Is there any way BOTH teams can lose???

(Edit from GMC: Of COURSE I’d prefer the Blue Devils lost, I just have to keep up appearances as a Blue Jays-hating fan of the Terrapins. It’s how things work.)

So with that in mind…you’re going down, Duke!!!

3. Preakness Week Events: Pee Wee Preakness (Tuesday 11am Federal Hill), Preakness Frog Hop (Wednesday 12pm Patterson Park), Preakness Alibi Breakfast (Thursday 9:30am Pimlico), Preakness Crab Derby (Thursday 12pm Lexington Market), Hot Air Balloon Festival (Thursday & Friday 3pm Turf Valley), Preakness Parade (Friday 8:30pm Inner Harbor)

This is what I know…I’ll be enjoying about 3-4,765 of THESE this week…

bes

And while we don’t have a WHOLE lot of things going on better than the Kentucky Derby; I do know this much…

Black-Eyed Susans >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mint Juleps

2. Infieldfest feat. O.A.R., Zac Brown Band, Collective Soul & Mr. Greengenes (Saturday all day Pimlico), Sugarland (Sunday 6:30pm Merriweather Post Pavilion), Corinne Bailey Rae (Friday 7pm Rams Head Live), Puddle of Mudd & Adelita’s Way (Thursday 8pm Power Plant Live), Pearl Jam (Thursday 7pm Jiffy Lube Live), Sister Hazel (Saturday 8pm 9:30 Club)

EVERYTHING to like on this list…

First of all, the Maryland Jockey Club couldn’t have done better than O.A.R. EVER for Saturday…

Plus, Zac Brown Band is pretty good too…

And Mr. Greengenes can even DO O.A.R……

And as far as Sister Hazel is concerned…I mean…come on…

1. Preakness (Saturday 6pm from Pimlico live on NBC), Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (Friday 5pm from Pimlico live on HRTV), Preakness Post Position Draw (Wednesday 5pm Turfside Terrace live on HRTV)

I’ll save you my “I’m picking Sarah Jessica Parker this year” comments. I mean, I AM…but it’s completely irrelevant.

The only real question left for me is whether or not to wear the same attire to Pimlico Saturday that I wore to Churchill Downs. Your call…

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 03 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention-Boxing: Paul Williams vs. Kermit Cintron (Saturday 9:45pm from Carson, CA live on HBO); WNBA: New York Liberty @ Washington Mystics (Wednesday 11:30am Verizon Center); MLS: Kansas City Wizards @ DC United (Wednesday 7pm from RFK Stadium live on ESPN2), DC United @ FC Dallas (Saturday 9pm from Dallas live on MLS Direct Kick); Auto Racing: NASCAR Showtime Southern 500 (Saturday 7:30pm from Darlington, SC live on FOX); Preakness 5k (Saturday 10am Pimlico Race Course)

10. Carolina Liar (Sunday 7pm Recher Theatre), Ratt (Thursday 7:30pm Rams Head Live), Taylor Hawkins (Tuesday 7pm Sonar), Drake (Wednesday 7pm Pier Six Pavilion), Angels & Airwaves (Thursday 7pm 9:30 Club), Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (Friday 8pm Rams Head On Stage), Soullive (Friday 8pm 8×10 Club)

Not an overwhelming week of live music in town, but good shows on the list. Carolina Liar is pretty good, and the show is only 12 bucks. A certain doughy morning radio sidekick you know will be there…

Seeing Drake at Pier Six might be pretty cool, but it would be even cooler to get tickets to the upcoming Counting Crows show at Pier Six. I’ll be working on that. Wasn’t Drake on Degrassi???

You might have seen Sharon Jones with Michael Buble on SNL, or you might have seen her at Virgin Music Festival. Either way, it’s TOTALLY worth seeing her again…

And I had NO IDEA Soullive was coming to town. Chances of me NOT being in Federal Hill Saturday night? Almost zero.

9. Friday Night Lights Season 4 Premieres (Friday 8pm NBC), Betty White hosts Saturday Night Live (Saturday 11:30pm NBC)

Betty White just owns. I’m a little concerned that her hosting turn has been overhyped by Facebook, NBC and THE REST OF AMERICA, but I still have a good feeling about this. I feel like if something is crap; she might be capable of making something out of it. And if she screws up-I mean-she’s BETTY FREAKING WHITE. Plus, Jay-Z will be there. There was to be something magical between them, right??? This chick just owns…

8. High School Lacrosse: St. Paul’s @ Boys’ Latin (Friday 3:45pm), Loyola Blakefield @ Archbishop Spalding (Friday 7pm)

Is this an excuse just to post another one of my infamous Jailbait pictures? NO……..Yes…….

jailbait

Geez that’s frightening. Am I a criminal???

7. Golf: THE PLAYERS Championship (Thursday & Friday 1pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 2pm live on NBC. All golf from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.)

So the word is that if Phil Mickelson wins at TPC Sawgrass and Tiger Woods finishes outside of the Top 5…Lefty will become the World’s New #1 Player.

Number 1 GOLF player of course. I’m pretty sure Eldrick has that other honor locked up…

rist

6. NHL Playoffs: Penguins/Canadiens (Game 3 Tuesday 7pm from Montreal live on VERSUS, Game 4 Thursday 7pm from Montreal live on VERSUS, Game 5 Saturday 7pm from Pittsburgh live on VERSUS, Game 6 if necessary Monday 7pm from Montreal live on VERSUS); Bruins/Flyers (Game 3 Wednesday 7pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 4 Friday 7pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 5 if necessary Monday 7pm from Boston live on VERSUS); Sharks/Red Wings (Game 3 Tuesday 7:30pm from Detroit live on VERSUS, Game 4 Thursday 7:30pm from Detroit live on VERSUS, Game 5 if necessary Saturday 10pm from San Jose live on VERSUS, Game 6 if necessary Monday 7:30pm from Detroit live on VERSUS); Canucks/Blackhawks (Game 3 Wednesday 9:30pm from Vancouver live on VERSUS, Game 4 Friday 9:30pm from Vancouver live on VERSUS, Game 5 if necessary Sunday 8pm from Chicago live on VERSUS)

With the Coyotes out, I have absolutely no reason to care about the NHL Playoffs anymore. My guess is that Pittsburgh plays Vancouver for the Stanley Cup. If they do, I’ll either have to root for Canada (HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!) or I’ll have to pretend like I don’t know the Stanley Cup Finals are going on.

That’s very possible.  But unlike the folks up in North Harford, I’m NOT rooting for anyone from the Steel City. Just forget it.

Well…unless Mena Suvari (of American Pie fame) were from the Steel City. I could probably get behind that…

suvari

5. NBA Playoffs: Cavaliers-Celtics (Game 3 Friday 7pm from Boston live on ESPN, Game 4 Sunday 3:30pm from Boston live on ABC); Hawks-Magic (Game 1 Tuesday 8pm from Orlando live on TNT, Game 2 Thursday from Orlando live on ESPN, Game 3 Saturday 5pm from Atlanta live on ESPN, Game 4 Monday 8pm from Atlanta live on TNT); Lakers-Jazz (Game 2 Tuesday 10:30pm from Los Angeles live on TNT, Game 3 Saturday 8pm from Salt Lake City live on ABC, Game 4 Monday 10:30pm from Salt Lake City live on TNT); Suns-Spurs (Game 2 Wednesday 9pm from Phoenix live on TNT, Game 3 Friday 9:30pm from San Antonio live on ESPN, Game 4 Sunday 8pm from San Antonio live on TNT)

Unlike the NHL, I actually have rooting interests in the NBA Playoffs still-despite the fact that I’ve watched about as much NBA basketball this year as I have D-League basketball. (I passed out on my couch and there was a Rio Grande Valley game on in the background. Don’t judge.)

First of all, I’m rooting for Joe Smith. Sure, he averaged less than 5 points per game in the Hawks’ first round playoff series against the Bucks; but he and Len Bias were the likely the greatest college basketball players in Maryland history.

Also, I have MY team. That’s right, Fear The Gorilla!!!

gorilla

LET ME HEAR YOU….GROWL?!?!?

4. Mixed Martial Arts-UFC 113: Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua 2 (Saturday 10pm from Montreal live on Pay-Per-View); Bellator Fighting Championships XVII (Thursday 8pm from Boston live on Fox Sports Net)

HOLY CRAP CANCEL MY PLANS. He’s back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Kimbo Slice single-handedly carrying MMA in the mainstream right now? No-Brock Lesnar helps too. In fact, if Slice could win a fight or two; a possible Slice-Lesnar showdown might well be the single most-purchased PPV event in the history of sports.

It’s fun to dream. Especially when those dreams involve UFC Octagon Girl Rachel Leah vacuuming in her underwear. Oh hey!

leah

3. Ravens Mini-Camp (Friday-Sunday, 1 Winning Drive)

Oh my God I have to know everything there is to know about Boston College UFA FB/LB Mike McLaughlin IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Is Mini-Camp sexy? By absolutely no means. But will it be nice to see some FREAKING NFL FOOTBALL of some level this weekend? Yes. Maybe not quite the feeling that I assume is aided by outside influences before Passion Pit records music and makes videos, but good nonetheless…

2. Iron Man 2 opens in theaters (Friday), Maryland Film Festival (Thursday-Sunday, Charles Theatre/MICA/University of Baltimore)

If you’re not excited for Iron Man, just go ahead and move to the Soviet Union and practice the anthem with Nikolai Volkoff. This is the most significant moment of 2010…

1. College Lacrosse: Johns Hopkins @ Loyola (Saturday 12pm from Ridley Athletic Complex live on AM1570 WNST/WMAR 2/ESPNU); America East Tournament-Albany @ UMBC (Wednesday 7:30pm UMBC Stadium, Championship Game Saturday-teams, time, location TBA); CAA Tournament: UMass @ Towson (Wednesday 7:30pm Unitas Stadium, Championship Saturday night-Towson will host with win); Selection Sunday (Sunday 8:30pm ESPNU)

Given the nature of the Virginia lacrosse tragedy that has rocked the sport’s community, it would be expected that I would have something poignant to say here. I don’t. Freaking situation is so UNBELIEVABLY sad I can’t put it into words.

I love lacrosse. I mean, I LOVE lacrosse. I will be watching the rest of the way. I hope you will as well. If not, I understand.

It’s the most honest I can be.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 03 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because this blog I am posting today is exactly the 1,000th blog I have posted here at WNST.net. What did you get me? The easy choice would have been to just give me $1,000 to celebrate 1,000 blogs; but I can understand if you failed to do so. It’s not like you’ve never let me down before.

Of course, you could have gotten me tickets to see the Beach Boys at Pier Six. I don’t care how old they are, I don’t care who’s in the band anymore (is John Stamos in the band?), THIS is still one of the greatest things to ever happen in the history of music….

Okay, I’m kidding. But I’m not kidding about the fact that Pet Sounds changed my life….

So….it would be a nice gift…..just saying….

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. Maryland Official Site previews tonight’s showdown with Duke on Senior Night at Comcast Center

Not a whole lot more I can say about this game tonight that hasn’t already been said. Everyone knows it’s the game of the year in the ACC. Everyone knows it’s the biggest game the Terrapins have played in about 5 years.

We’re just hoping it goes much more like this…

Than this…..

2. The Diamondback’s Eric Detweiler says tonight final chance for College Park faithful to celebrate Greivis Vasquez

As I mentioned yesterday, his jersey won’t go up in the rafters tonight-but it will eventually. Much like the game itself, there’s not too much more that can be said about Vasquez’s tenure in College Park. He has ABSOLUTELY been the best player in the history of the Comcast Center, and the relationship between himself, Gary Williams, Maryland fans and the building itself has been pretty special.

As he was coming off the floor the night of the Clemson game, you could tell it was getting emotional for him. He loves that place. He loves the fans. He loves the atmosphere. As our buddy Patrick Stevens (@D1scourse on Twitter) mentioned yesterday, he loves college basketball- “Tomorrow is going to be such a good day just to play basketball. Let’s play some ball.”

Also, the game tonight is apparently going to be shown live in Venezuela. Like I said, big deal.

3. Winston-Salem Journal’s Bill Cole says Blue Devils can clinch ACC title outright tonight-they haven’t won regular season title since ’05-’06

I guess that’s the one thing we’re conveniently forgetting about tonight’s game. It isn’t just a big deal for the Terps, it’s a big deal for Coach K’s Blue Devils as well. They’ve been having to play 2nd fiddle to North Carolina in the ACC over the last couple of years, and these players (Jon Scheyer especially) don’t know what it’s like to win a regular season title. That’s in their mind.

Coach K isn’t the type of person to do too much forward thinking, so it’s a bit surprising that he’s actually taken time this year to talk about the significance of winning a regular season title.

For both teams, it’s another banner. Even if Maryland only ends up splitting the regular season title, that’s another banner that will hang in the Comcast Center rafters that these players will be able to back and see any time they come to a game.

4. Carroll County Times’ Josh Land says tonight also night to honor Landon Milbourne and Eric Hayes

Not to be forgotten tonight-these two players have made MAJOR contributions to this program over the last few years-and will be SORELY missed next season. The evolution that Eric Hayes has gone through as an ACC basketball player is absolutely incredible. Remember, it was just two years ago when there was a real thought that Hayes would have to transfer out because he couldn’t handle this level of play.

I also expect Jerome Burney to be honored tonight. He’s going to graduate in May and move on after a foot injury ended his career early. He’s been valuable to the team as a player-assistant, and even took time to hand out stats to members of the media last week, which was appreciated.

5. Navy Official Site says Midshipmen bounced back to pick up lacrosse win at Lehigh last night

Beating a team like Lehigh should be expected from the Mids, but after two tough losses, there was always a chance they might struggle to snap their funk. It doesn’t get much easier for the Mids, as they now have to face a Bucknell team that beat Towson and nearly beat Duke earlier this season on Saturday afternoon at 3 over in Annapolis at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Speaking of lacrosse, I’m organizing a “Tweet-Up” (follow us on Twitter @WNST) this afternoon at Caves Athletic Complex in Owings Mills-where Stevenson is holding their true home opener against RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology). If you’re a local lax fan, I’d love to have you come hang out. Keep following us, as I’ll give you details on where we’ll meet before the game. I’m hoping to hit Steve’s Deli after the game for sure. And please re-tweet to your lacrosse friends.

6. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec and Peter Schmuck say Will Ohman, Matt Albers expected to pitch behind Jeremy Guthrie in Spring Training opener today vs. Rays

Every outing is important for both pitchers-but especially Ohman, who is on the outside looking in right now when it comes to the Birds’ bullpen.

Unfortunately, today’s game is not on TV; as I guess MASN is going to show an outdoors show-or a radio show (that I don’t think would even be on today since they’re airing the game on the radio), or an old Big East Tournament game replay, or something like that.

If you need something to look at without the game being on, may I suggest the new pictures of Audrina Patridge in the British version of FHM….

patridge

You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

7. USA Today’s Mel Antonen says O’s not thrilled about playing 16 of 32 Grapefruit League games against AL East opponents

They also were wondering if they could change their AL East schedule to not have to play so many games against AL East opponents.

LOL.

Now, this is an actual problem. The Orioles would much rather play the Cardinals in the preseason, for the same reasons the Ravens would never play the Browns, Bengals or Steelers in the preseason. They don’t want to allow their most common opponents to get to know too much about their team.

However, they knew this would be part of the equation when they got out of Ft. Lauderdale and got to Sarasota, so they can’t REALLY complain about it. They just might want to schedule some more of their longshot pitchers on days where they face the Rays, Red Sox, Yankees and Blue Jays.

8. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester mocks Boise State CB Kyle Wilson to Ravens

The only concern with Kyle Wilson is that he’s a little undersized (5’10″), and he didn’t have to face premiere wide receivers in the WAC. Where as Oklahoma CB Dominique Franks and Oklahoma State CB Perrish Cox have had to face the likes of Michael Crabtree, Dez Bryant, Dezmon Briscoe and Danario Alexander in the Big 12, Wilson didn’t face the same types of receivers when he was with the Broncos.

Wilson’s game is comparable to Lardarius Webb-but he doesn’t quite have the pedigree. He’s got TONS of speed and can make an impact in the return game. He’s a nice player. I just get the feeling the Ravens might be looking for more of a big, physical cornerback.

9. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says T.O., Kevin Walter, Antonio Bryant and Mushin Muhammad are all UFA options at WR for Ravens

Which means…..it’s time for free agent porn!!!

terrell
walter
bryant
muhammad

Look, none of these guys are ideal. But Larry Fitzgerald isn’t available. SOMEONE has to play WR next season. I just hope it isn’t Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton and Donte’ Stallworth.

10. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Brandon Marshall, Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd and Miles Austin are all RFA options at WR for Ravens

I’ll save the “RFA WR Porn” for another day, but I will mention that I don’t think Miles Austin or Brandon Marshall are REAL options, and Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd won’t come easy.

Again….somebody has to play receiver.

11. Yahoo! Sports’ Doug Farrar mocks Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas to Ravens

There’s a polite and an impolite word for this.

The polite word is “stretch.” The impolite word is “insane.”

Either one works.

(Edit from GMC: He was a borderline guy BEFORE he got hurt again. How would that make him IMPROVE his status?)

12. The Sun says Crystal Palace Baltimore, Loyola to raise money to benefit Haiti at next Wednesday’s exhibition match

I think this is awesome. And since there’s not much else for me to say about it, I’ll post a picture of Ice T’s wife CoCo that What Would Tyler Durden Do posted yesterday. It’s like “ReTweeting”, just without the Twitter….

Coco

And finally, I leave you with this.

I was never an Allen Iverson fan. He went to Georgetown. He played for the 76ers. The only team I root for in Philadelphia is the Flyers. BUT….if this is it for him, he was a hell of a player. Plus, we’ll always have this….
