Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 28 May 2012 by WNST Staff

Honorable Mention: Boxing-Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode (Saturday 9pm from Carson, CA live on Showtime), Gabriel Rosado vs. Joel Julio (Friday 9pm from Bethlehem, PA live on NBC Sports Network); WNBA: Minnesota Lynx @ Washington Mystics (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet); Pro Lacrosse: MLL Chesapeake Bayhawks @ Denver Outlaws (Saturday 9pm from Denver live on ESPN3.com)

10. Zac Brown Band (Thursday 5:30pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Capital Jazz Fest feat. Indie.Arie, Bill Cosby (Friday-Sunday Merriweather Post Pavilion); Radiohead (Sunday 7:30pm Verizon Center); Miranda Lambert/Jerrod Niemann (Sunday 4pm Jiffy Lube Live);  City and Colour (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live); Smile Empty Soul (Saturday 5pm Recher Theatre); Crossfade (Monday 7pm Baltimore Soundstage); Dandy Warhols (Tuesday 7pm 9:30 Club); The Used (Wednesday 7:30pm Fillmore Silver Spring); Victor Wooten (Thursday 8pm Howard Theatre); Dr. John (Friday 7:30pm Birchmere); Rhett Miller (Monday 8pm Jammin Java)

I’d watch ZBB do just about anything, but this was as good as anything I’ve seen them do…

My favorite tune from Thom Yorke and the boys?

For more traditional country folk, I sorta dig this Jerrod Niemann tune…

I wish I didn’t have to admit to digging this tune…

9. Great Grapes Wine & Food Festival (Saturday & Sunday 12pm Oregon Ridge); Guy Torry (Thursday-Saturday Baltimore Comedy Factory); Corey Holcomb (Thursday-Sunday DC Improv); “Man on a Ledge” available on Blu-Ray/DVD (Tuesday); Glenn Clark’s first ever “Hogfest” (Saturday)

That’s right. For the first time in my (still?) young life, I will be roasting a pig Saturday. It’s all thanks in part to ABC Rental Store in Rosedale. A talented young man I listen to on the radio is always talking to me about them. I think his show is called “The Reality Check.” I PRAY my results make me as happy as George W. Bush…

Also, I will be hosting a qualifier for the Olympic KanJam team Saturday (more on Twitter @OlympicKanJam). I expect the day to look much like this…

Nets Select Maryland’s Jordan Williams in Round 2

Posted on 23 June 2011 by WNST Staff

Williams Picked by Nets in Second Round

Maryland center led ACC in rebounding in 2010-11

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jordan Williams, who earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference recognition after leading the league in rebounding as a sophomore, was chosen by the New Jersey Nets in the second round of the NBA Draft Thursday night.

Williams, a 6-foot-10 center, was the 36th selection overall in the draft and was the Nets’ second selection of the night.

I’m excited for Jordan that he realized a longtime dream of his to have his name called in the NBA Draft,” said new Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. “It’s a testament of his hard work and the great opportunity he had to play college basketball at Maryland.  We wish Jordan the best as he begins his professional career, and we will follow him closely as he adds his name to the long list of Maryland alumni to play in the NBA.”

Williams averaged 16.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game for the Terrapins, who went 19-14 in the 2010-11 season. He set a school record with 13 straight double-doubles this season and ended the year with 25, which was second in the nation.

With 388 rebounds, he finished second on the single-season rebounding list at Maryland and was only the seventh sophomore in the history of the ACC to grab at least 600 career rebounds (672). He finished third nationally in rebounding and was the first Maryland player to lead the ACC on the glass since Joe Smith (1993-94).

He was a third team All-America pick by Yahoo! Sports and FoxSports.com, and earned honorable mention All-America consideration by the Associated Press.

Williams’ selection gives the Terrapin men’s basketball program picks in back-to-back seasons for the second time since 2007. Greivis Vasquez, the ACC Player of the Year in 2010, was selected on the first round by the Memphis Grizzlies and was the 28th pick overall in last year’s NBA Draft.

D.J. Strawberry (2007) and James Gist (2008) were the most recent back-to-back picks, while Maryland had players taken in 2001 (Terence Morris), 2002 (Chris Wilcox, Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter) and 2003 (Steve Blake).

Wild Day in Annapolis: Navy’s Lange, Meade Resign

Posted on 09 May 2011 by WNST Staff

Navy basketball coach Billy Lange and lacrosse coach Richie Meade both announced their resignations Monday. Lange will join Jay Wright’s staff at Villanova as an associate head coach, per FoxSports.com.

Here are the official releases from the Navy Sports Information Department…

Meade Resigns As Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach At The Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md.— Richie Meade has resigned as the head men’s lacrosse coach and will be assigned to other duties, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced today. Meade will continue as a full tenured professor.

“After coaching 26 years at a Service Academy as both an assistant at West Point and head coach at the Naval Academy, there are many coaches, student-athletes and staff whose philosophy on life has been influenced by Coach Meade,” said Gladchuk.  “He is a man of strong character and is professionally dedicated to that which is represented through the moral, mental and physical dimensions of our mission.  Coach Meade has been offered the opportunity to reach an even greater representation of the Brigade as a tenured professor for the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, where he can share his extensive experience with our midshipmen at large.  Although today he is leaving the playing field, educating in an even broader context for the Brigade of Midshipmen can be personally rewarding and to the great benefit of the Academy.  Our gratitude will continue to be with Richie.”

“As a coach I was very demanding of my players and held them to very high standards, so it’s appropriate that the Naval Academy should expect the same from me,” said Meade. “Lacrosse was a vehicle to teach the players about leadership.  Through that I hope I made them better officers.  Aside from my family, my most treasured relationships have been with the players I’ve been honored to coach.  I’ve gotten a lot more from each one of them than they could have ever received from me.  I look forward to continuing my association with the Naval Academy and leave my coaching duties without any regrets or apologies.”

Meade compiled a 169-120 (.585) record in 21 years as a head coach at the University of Baltimore and the Naval Academy, including a 142-97 (.589) record in 17 seasons at Navy. Over that period, he led Navy to five Patriot League regular- season and tournament titles and seven NCAA Tournaments, including an appearance in the NCAA National Championship game in 2004.

Navy will begin a national search for a head coach immediately.

Lange Resigns As Head Men’s Basketball Coach At The Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced today that Billy Lange has resigned as the head men’s basketball coach.

“We all express our gratitude for the contributions Coach Lange has made to the Academy and the men’s basketball program,” said Gladchuk.  “The Midshipmen who played for him have been outstanding representatives of the Brigade of Midshipmen and role models in the community. Navy Basketball reflects dedication, determination, passion, responsibility and class in large part due to the leadership Billy brought to Annapolis.”

“Being the head coach of Navy basketball has truly been and will always be one of the highest honors of my life,” said Lange.  “To be associated with such a prestigious institution and be a part of the tradition, legacy and family of Navy basketball was a privilege. Seven years ago, we were tasked with a daunting misson; to re-establish a winning, passionate, committed culture. I can proudly say that Navy basketball is well respected within our conference, our region, and nationally. The program is poised for a great future.  I will always cherish the special relationships I had and will continue to have with the young men I have coached, led and mentored and the talented staff I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.  The experience has been incredible and I thank Chet Gladchuk for the wonderful opportunity.  Above all, in light of what our great country accomplished eight days ago, it has been awe inspiring to be a part of developing our nation’s future leaders through the passion and oneness of Navy basketball.”

Lange was the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year and led Navy to upper-division finishes in each of the last four years.

Navy will begin a national search for a head coach immediately.

Early Reports Wrong as Sean Miller Now Staying at Arizona

Posted on 07 May 2011 by WNST Staff

After a wild Saturday of reports (including an initial report from ESPN 980-WTEM-in Washington, DC) saying University of Arizona head coach Sean Miller was set to replace Gary Williams as basketball coach at the University of Maryland, things got even wilder after midnight.

A late night Twitter update from U of A Athletic Director Greg Byrne said the following…

“Breaking news: Internet speculation wrong. Sean Miller is staying at Arizona as our hoops coach.”

An ensuing press release from Byrne confirmed the Tweet.

“Sean and I have had many positive conversations and have been working on a revised contract for some time” said Byrne in the release. “I’m pleased to confirm that we have agreed to an amendment to Sean’s contract that we hope will keep him in Tucson for many years to come.”

This appears to mean that a western trip from Terrapins Athletic Director and Baltimore Ravens owner/Terps booster Steve Bisciotti is for naught, and the school will be forced to consider other candidates.

Multiple reports have suggested Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon has already removed his name from consideration. Other rumored candidates include Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey, Villanova’s Jay Wright, VCU’s Shaka Smart and Butler’s Brad Stevens.

The Chicago Tribune reported Saturday that Brey is closer to agreeing on a contract extension with the Fighting Irish. CSN Philadelphia reported Saturday that Wright will not be leaving Villanova.

Anderson and Bisciotti reportedly traveled to Las Vegas Saturday to meet with Miller at a Nike Coaches Clinic. Anderson’s visit was originally reported by FoxSports.com’s Jeff Goodman, Bisciotti’s inclusion was originally reported by Comcast SportsNet’s Chick Hernandez.

Bisciotti’s involvement in the school’s coaching search came just 24 hours after he told WNST.net’s Glenn Clark decisively “no” when asked if he would be involved in the process. Clark interviewed Bisciotti at Williams’ retirement press conference in College Park Friday.

Miller appeared to be the frontrunner for the job, as the Ellwood City, Pennsylvania native was reported to be interested in returning to the East Coast. It is not immediately known why he made the decision to stay with the Wildcats.

Follow @WNST on Twitter for more details as they emerge.
