Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 11 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s a Happy Tuesday for me because I finally got around to seeing the video of Will Ferrell pitching for the AAA team in Round Rock, Texas. I completely forgot to post it earlier. MY BAD! I’m sure someone else in the world hasn’t seen it, so here goes…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP/STATS preview Orioles’ series opener tonight against Mariners

Here we go.

Cliff Lee faces David Hernandez (who is still looking for victory #1 this season) tonight, first pitch at Oriole Park at Camden Yards is at 7:05pm and the game can be seen on MASN2. I hope you’ll follow us on Twitter (@WNST) during the game for humorous comment; with our own Luke Jones live at OPACY.

Cliff Lee is worth going out to see pitch, and the Orioles are the home team. Plus, they’re giving away Brian Matusz t-shirts tonight.

And seriously, what the hell else are you going to do tonight? Watch Glee???

Okay…I might.

2. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Free The Birds about trying to get Birds to ‘fix’ problems

Which is really the crux of the issue here.

Would I have organized an event for this Monday night when the Orioles play the Kansas City Royals? I doubt it. Do I really want to pay money to go watch two miserable teams meet up downtown in a game that is more likely to be dubbed “unwatchable” than “ESPN Instant Classic”? Of course not.

But when it comes down to “right or wrong”, and whether or not I support a showing of fans who all stand under the umbrella of “there is still something wrong, and we NEED to fix it”-the answer is YES.

Something is STILL wrong. The fact that the minor leagues have improved under Andy MacPhail is NOT enough for me to say “okay, everything’s fine.” The team is still TERRIBLE. I do not have confidence that the leadership will do what is necessary to compete in the AL East in the immediate future. There is still a MAJOR disconnect between the organization and the fanbase, and the stadium still sits mostly empty almost every night.

There are problems. I want them fixed. I’m standing up to say something about them.

This isn’t an “anti-Peter Angelos” or “anti-Andy MacPhail” or “anti-Dave Trembley” statement for me.

This is nothing more than a “fix the problems” message from me.

When it comes to RIGHT or WRONG, I’m going to do what I feel is right. And what I feel is right is to not sit idly by and dismiss the problems of the organization; although plenty of others will.

I hope you’ll join us.

3. Fanhouse’s Steve Phillips says Orioles ‘need to give fans hope’, which can be done through managerial change

Firing the manager wouldn’t give Orioles fans hope. Matt Wieters gave Orioles fans hope. Hiring a REAL manager would give fans hope.

With all due respect to Steve Phillips, firing the manager in New York probably did give the fanbase in New York hope when he was GM of the Mets-as it represented a chance to give someone new a shot to win.

Firing Dave Trembley wouldn’t give Brad Komminsk (or whoever the Orioles brought in) a chance to win. He’s still inherit the same terrible team that has been just good enough to win 9 games thus far this season.

However, firing the manager MIGHT at least make a statement that “losing isn’t okay.”

It would be nice to see that statement made. But I certainly don’t expect it to be.

4. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Corey Patterson, Miguel Abreu had big nights for O’s on farm

Ugh…there’s an argument that even Corey Patterson represents hope when it comes to this bunch here in Charm City. Of course, Lou Montanez remains on the roster.

A couple of quick things before we move on from the Orioles:

A-Congratulations to our “Apologist of the Morning”-as Peter Schmuck was selected by “The Great Arbitrator” this morning on AM1570 WNST. Peter started to make excuses about why the Orioles might struggle against Seattle this week-pointing out that the M’s were sending both Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez to the hill.

BUT-he stopped himself-saying “I’m not making excuses for them in advance. They need to make some hay against the Mariners, Indians and Royals over the next eight days.

Of course, he couldn’t help himself…

“It’s fair to point out that they’ve probably opened the season against the toughest collection of pitching that any team has faced this year.”

It’s fair, and it’s still apologetic. That’s why we love you Pete. (Edit from GMC: We REALLY do.)

B-Hearing that Jim Johnson is going to see Dr. James Andrews is NEVER good news. I’d rather hear that he’s going to see The Undertaker. (Edit from GMC: I mean The Undertaker that has never lost at WrestleMania, not the other Undertaker. That’s never good.)

(Oh, And speaking of the WWE, I LOVE The Miz, but I’d probably fly THROUGH THE ROOF if they let Bret Hart beat him next week somehow. I know they won’t, but I would seriously FREAK OUT.)

5. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Troy Smith ‘loves it’ in Baltimore, thinks Ravens can do ‘special things’

Well, wouldn’t you know…one of those “special things” happened this morning. I added Troy to the list in our “A Month of Jerks” segment on the show. You can hear my explanation in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault right here at WNST.net.

As far as Troy the quarterback goes-this was going to happen all along. He had a 5th round tender. If another NFL team wanted him, they had their shot at him.

They didn’t.

He’s going to have to suck it up this season-knowing there’s at least a chance that Joe Flacco could get hurt and he might have to play.

(Edit from GMC: I’ve knocked on everything in this room that has wood. PLEASE dont’ let Joe Flacco get hurt!)

6. BaltimoreRavens.com says Michael Oher to appear on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”

When I heard Oher was going on ABC, I was REALLY hoping it was “Dancing With The Stars.” Not because I think the Big Man would move any better than, say, Jonathan Ogden in those GEICO commercials; but more because it would give me an excuse to see some more of Nicole Scherzinger…

nicoles

7. Thoroughred Times’ Jeff Lowe says Lookin At Lucky will run in Preakness, Martin Garcia will ride

As we talked about on the show this morning; I really feel that if the weather is nice Saturday, Lookin’ At Lucky is the horse to beat. If it’s raining and sloppy, I’ll go with Calvin Borel and Super Saver again.

If you missed Bob Baffert (or Dale Romans-trainer of Paddy O’Prado and First Dude) this morning with Drew Forrester, check out the Audio Vault. Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas is scheduled to join Drew tomorrow morning at 8:05.

8. BloodHorse says Mission Impazible will skip Preakness

And yes, this was announced via Mission Impazible’s Facebook page. The horse said…

“NEW UPDATE! My connections have decided to pass on the Preakness and target the GI-Haskell or GII-Jim Dandy this summer. I will be moving up to Belmont to train for a prep race to be determined at a later date that will set me up for the August 1st weekend. Have no worries! The name MISSION IMPAZIBLE will make headlines this summer!

Facebook is a funny place. I mean, who knew horses had Facebook pages? The only thing I used Facebook for before now was to find more pictures of Intern Genna doing questionable things…

genna

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Loyola trying for first 10 win season since 2001

As I said yesterday, the trip to Cornell will be a VERY difficult task for the Greyhounds; especially given how they played in their games against Denver and Johns Hopkins to close the season.

More difficult task? Getting me to stop looking at bikini pics of Audrina Patridge over at Guyism…

audrina

10. Inside Lacrosse’s Terry Foy says no timeline for Tony Seaman decision at Towson

Hear, I’ll make this easy for Mike Hermann.

Bring him back.

There, that wasn’t so hard-now was it?

There’s a chance that another coach (Paul Cantabene comes to mind) could have success with the Tigers, but I am by no means convinced of it. The CAA is a tough league, and having to recruit against the likes of Hopkins, Maryland, Loyola and UMBC in state ALONE makes the gig even tougher.

Seaman took Towson to a Final Four.

I’d stick with him.

11. Frederick News-Post’s Greg Swatek says Robert Burke introduced as new hoops coach at Mt. St. Mary’s

History says being the man (Milan Brown) to replace THE MAN (Jim Phelan) is EXTREMELY difficult. Of course, Brown actually had some success replacing Jim Phelan in Emmittsburg, which should help Burke make the transition as Mountaineers head coach. His background includes stops as an assistant at American and Georgetown.

You know what’s more difficult than replacing “The Man”?

Convincing me that I should be doing ANYTHING besides looking at pictures of Jason Kidd WAG Hope Dworaczyk that I guess are from Playboy and were posted by Busted Coverage…

hope

And finally, I leave you with this.

The Cincinnati Cyclones and Reading Royals got into a fight. I approve.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 28 April 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because DESPITE the fact that the Phoenix Coyotes were eliminated last night, it was still a REMARKABLE season for me as a hockey fan. Not having a team here to root for, I created a slew of memories following a bad team in Phoenix, only to have it pay off with this incredible run.

And as I always say, there’s plenty still going on for sports fans in Arizona…

asugirls

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says O’s hung on to beat Yanks for first win all season at OPACY

YES!!!!

For everyone who has said something like “they weren’t going to lose EVERY game they played at Camden Yards this season”, the only response I could think of was “Are you sure?”

There was an announced paid crowd of 20,000 at The Yard last night, and maybe the number of fans was somewhere in that neighborhood. It was good to see most of them go home unhappy.

I’ve heard a lot of praise for Kevin Millwood’s effort last night, but I’ll go ahead and be the one to say it. 5 and a third from your number 1 pitcher is not good enough, by any stretch of the imagination. They need more than that.

But I guess when you’re 4-16, getting 2 wins is enough for now.

2. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of win

Another disturbing number from last night’s game was the combined 1-16 effort the Orioles got from the first four hitters in their lineup (Adam Jones had a double and Matt Wieters had two walks; Nick Markakis and Miguel Tejada completely failed to reach base).

With the team having found some offensive success recently, I understand that Dave Trembley is looking for a little bit of continuity. With that in mind, I’m not suggesting any sort of offensive shakeup. But I AM suggesting that the players at the top of the lineup GET ON BASE.

This is a very simple game. Just ask Crash Davis.

3. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Alfredo Simon recalled in time to pick up first career save for Birds

Dear God can we PLEASE STOP MAKING THESE SO DIFFICULT IN THE 9TH INNING?!?!?!

I guess the team has discovered the solution though-make sure you’re ahead by at least 3 runs before you get to the 9th inning!

Cesar Izturis apparently wanted to make sure he found a way to make everyone forget about his 2-3, 3 RBI performance. Not running to first base on a ground ball in Seattle and not moving runners on 1st and 2nd over at Fenway Park would have been NOTHING compared to the beating he would have taken for that last night had Alex Rodriguez came through for the Bombers.

Alfredo Simon is (I guess), the guy for a little while. Apparently there was an epic moment before the game when Trembley asked Simon “Are you scared?”. Christ. Why didn’t he just go all the way and channel Gerard Butler???

4. Frederick News-Post’s Stan Goldberg says Dave Trembley can’t be blamed for Orioles’ slow start

But even this effort couldn’t wrap up “Apologist of the Morning” honors for Stan, as “The Great Arbitrator” Drew Forrester instead selected Steve Heiser from the York Dispatch; who offered “pity” for the Birds because they have to compete with the Red Sox and Yankees in the AL East.

Ugh.

Moving back to what Stan wrote-I don’t COMPLETELY disagree with him. This ISN’T Dave Trembley’s fault alone. The problem is, Goldberg doesn’t suggest accountability for others in the organization who feigned interest in “wins and losses” this season despite not having any interest in putting together a legitimate major league roster.

It’s one thing to say “this isn’t Dave Trembley’s fault”, as it isn’t Dave Trembley’s fault ALONE. However, Trembley CAN be blamed for mismanaging a bullpen, questionable decisions about baserunning, insane lineup shuffling, and for a noticeable lack of fire in the collective belly of the team.

If you want to spare Trembley that blame, you have to be willing to place fault on Andy MacPhail and the leadership of the franchise. This isn’t just “unfortunate circumstances” or “bad luck.” This is a dreadful baseball team-so dreadful that winning 2 straight games was celebrated last night in the way some cities might celebrate the World Series.

5. Newark Star-Ledger’s Marc Carig says Yankees bullpen ineffective in loss

Apparently Boone Logan was confused by the sign hanging in the bullpen that said “Play Like an Oriole.”

If you missed Ken Singleton (YES Network) with Drew Forrester this morning on AM1570, make sure you check out the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault at WNST.net.

And to the rest of the Yankees fans staying here in Charm City, I offer you some Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz. Don’t say I never did anything for you…

6. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Brandon Erbe struggled, Koji Uehara appeared on farm

And to channel Ray Bachman….KO-JI!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before we move on from the Orioles, a reminder that CC Sabathia faces Jeremy Guthrie tonight at Yankee Stadium south; first pitch is at 7:05, and the game can be seen on MASN. If someone paid their bill, the game might be seen on MASN-HD tonight as well!

(Edit from GMC: Thanks for that last night.)

7. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says Shayne Graham, Matt Stover, Shaun Suisham only free agent kickers available on market

And Shayne Graham has clearly been considered a shoe-in around the organization to be brought in and compete with Billy Cundiff for the gig.

Of course, it isn’t exactly a sexy list. It’s like having to pick a concert to go to from Nickelback, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. I GUESS I’m going to Nickelback, but I’m not exactly excited about it.

I expect Graham to be signed before mini-camp next weekend. They’ll want to give him an equal chance to make the team even before Training Camp. And if he wants to make the team, I’d suggest one thing…

MAKE YOUR KICKS!!!

8. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Willis McGahee to be grand marshal for Preakness parade

With no offense to Willis, if I was picking someone to be the grand marshal of the race-I probably would have gone with Candice Boucher (Thanks Brosome.com!). I guess we just all have different ideas of what to look for in a grand marshal.

candice

9. UMTerps.com says ‘national search’ for Chuck Driesell’s replacement to begin immediately

Add Duane Simpkins to the list of coaches who will say publicly (at least to me-and I believe he’ll be saying it on the air tomorrow with Bob Haynie on AM1570 tomorrow) that he wants the job. He’s currently coaching at St. Alban’s in Washington-and a lot of people hope he’ll help tap the DC recruiting pipeline more than Gary Williams’ staff has recently.

And don’t eliminate Xavier assistant Bino Ranson from the discussion. Despite once having Nestor Aparicio as a youth ball coach, the Baltimore product has quickly moved up the coaching pipeline; and had success this season under Chris Mack with the Musketeers. The Terps already have a Baltimore-based assistant in Keith Booth, but I’m not sure they’re completely thrilled with the endroads they’ve made here.

Still, it would very difficult for me to accept that someone coaching for the Terrapins was once coached by the Nasty One. He’s overcome greater obstacles than Michael Oher!

10. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens previews tonight’s Hopkins-Towson game at Homewood Field

Should be a great atmosphere tonight, as Dave Pietramala’s Blue Jays are playing for their NCAA Tournament lives.

Tony Seaman’s Tigers can basically guarantee themselves at least an at-large spot with a win.

Look, it’s not like you’re going to be going to the Orioles game. Go watch some lacrosse!

11. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester has no problem with “Get Your Preak On”

And neither do I. Especially if I’m getting “my Preak on” with Ellen Petri (Thanks Guyism!)…

petri

Oh, it’s another thing.

12. Daily Racing Form’s Jay Privman says Bob Baffert looking for 4th Kentucky Derby win with Lookin At Lucky

It would be about time something good happened for that guy.

And finally, I leave you with this…

I’m not REALLY sure what happened during the end of the NLB Final between Cibona and Partizan. Go to Deadspin and read up if you want. All I know is that it was amazing.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 26 January 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s a happy Tuesday for me (DESPITE staying up until 3am just to see Andy Roddick collapse again in the 5th set) because we had a great night at Hill Field House last night watching Morgan State paste UMES. The Morgan State band is always one of the highlights of a trip to see the Bears, and last night was no different. I didn’t get any new video of the band, but their highlight last night was a version of “Lollipop” by Lil’ Wayne. Thanks to the guy who filmed them doing it during football season….

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. Pro Football Talk/NBC Sports’ Mike Florio reports former Patriots DC Dean Pees to become new Ravens LB Coach

Pees has a track record as a capable coach, even if his stint as Pats DC wasn’t as successful as fans in New England had hoped for. I think Pees would be a very nice addition to this Ravens staff, whether or not he is just taking the job in hopes of getting the old “Ray Lewis rub” that a number of coaches have gotten.

Pees’ link to John Harbaugh is via Miami (Ohio) University, where Harbaugh played CB under Pees as defensive coordinator. So far, I have found no link between either coach and Wally Szczerbiak, but I wish there was….

wally

2. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Vic Fangio could still have future with Ravens even if Pees hired to coach LB’s

I saw a lot of comments yesterday like “It’s a shame Vic Fangio had to learn he was getting fired this way”, but I just don’t know that we can assume that. Fangio came to this team in an undefined defensive assistant role, and I think it is safe to think that he might stay on in a defensive assistant role, with a focus on quality control.

For a team that struggled with small situations last year (need we relive the timeout disasters, review mistakes and the loss of 5 yards on a ball spot blunder), maybe having a single coach focused directly on quality control would be a good idea.

Remember, this is just me speculating. But Fangio is a Harbaugh guy, and I just don’t see him being given his walking papers to make way for Dean Pees. Something tells me this was worked out beforehand.

3. Chicago Tribune’s Vaughn McClure says Hue Jackson won’t interview with Bears

According to information obtained by WNST this morning, we expect Jackson to accept the Offensive Coordinator job with the Raiders.

And why not?

The Raiders have JaMarcus Russell, Chaz Schilens and Al Davis!

Best of luck to Hue Jackson. I’m just not certain this is a great move for him.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Drew’s speculation surrounding Al Saunders moving into Jackson’s role ended up being accurate, either.

4. Ravens Official Site’s Mike Duffy says team would be best to keep Derrick Mason

I understand Duff’s thought process here. With a likely uncapped year, the “Final 8″ rules will really hurt Ozzie Newsome’s pursuit of a legitimate playmaker at WR. With that in mind, Mason is a known commodity who has constantly put up numbers and been a reliable target right here in Charm City.

It makes sense.

Problem is, Derrick has to be willing to accept that he’s not getting the typical “big money” deal that many #1 wideouts would get. He also has to be willing to accept that the team wants to upgrade at WR, bringing in a new #1 threat that will likely take away from the number of times Joe Flacco goes to Mason.

I don’t necessarily think bringing back Derrick Mason would be a bad idea. In fact, I think the Ravens could be well served to have him for another season as they try to push towards a Super Bowl. But I don’t think it will be as easy as saying “we want you back.”

5. ESPN.com’s James Walker says losing Bart Scott, Jason Brown, Jim Leonhard and Marques Douglas could land Ravens multiple compensatory NFL Draft picks

Which makes the preparation the Ravens did last week in Orlando and this week at the Senior Bowl all the more important. This team is going to have to find some NFL-ready players in April’s Draft, as they will be hard pressed to keep all of the guys facing free agency, and they are a bit handcuffed by the Final 8 rules.

I couldn’t help but notice that Kyle Boller wasn’t on that list. He’s not an impact player per se, but isn’t he worth something?!?!?

6. Morgan State Official Site says Reggie Holmes, Troy Smith combined for 40 as Bears pasted UMES at Hill Field House

Just an overwhelming performance from Todd Bozeman’s crew last night. Troy Smith has really come on for them, responding after an incident in December that Todd Bozeman would only describe as a “transgression” postgame.

I guess you have to consider the fact that UMES was the opponent, but Frankie Allen has made improvements in Princess Anne, and the Hawks were coming off a win at Coppin State on Saturday. They had absolutely NOTHING to offer against Morgan last night.

The Bears return to action Saturday evening at Norfolk State, as they continue their quest for a perfect season in MEAC play. If you missed Todd Bozeman with Drew Forrester on “The Comcast Morning Show” this morning, check out the Audio Vault at WNST.net.

7. The AP says Quinston Reggins scored 14, but Coppin State fell to Delaware State at CSPEC

This was one of the Eagles’ best chances to make sure they got a win in conference play this season. They will be fighting to get a victory the rest of the way. They return to action Saturday afternoon at North Carolina A&T.

8. Maryland Official Site previews tonight’s ACC tilt with Miami at Comcast Center

It’s WAAAY too easy to say that the Terps shouldn’t lose to the ‘Canes tonight. We all know the Terps shouldn’t lose to the ‘Canes tonight. But there is certainly a danger to how well the Terrapins have been playing recently, as they need to remain focused. Frank Haith has had good success against Gary Williams, but usually with a more veteran team.

If I had to guess, I’d say 81-70 Maryland.

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Jordan Williams excelling because he takes pride in playing with ‘back to basket’

I’m running out of adjectives to use to describe Jordan Williams-and his career is 18 games old.

As he progresses, this team can continue to go far this season. If he continues to improve during ACC play-the Sweet 16 aspirations this team had before the season could be very legitimate. If he levels off, this team will likely end up back on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

10. Frederick News-Post’s Stan Goldberg remembers former Maryland AD Jim Kehoe

I wish I had gotten to know Jim Kehoe before he passed away. He certainly did a tremendous job as Athletic Director at Maryland, and he was honored with a moment of silence before Saturday night’s win over NC State.

I’d like to add more here, I am just forced to admit that I don’t know a whole lot more about Jim than what you can read in Stan’s story.

11. The Sun’s Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec say Jeremy Guthrie doesn’t think anything changes for him with Kevin Millwood joining staff

And other than not starting on Opening Day, he’s right. He will still have high expectations this season, and he will have to perform better than he did a season ago to remain a mainstay in an Orioles rotation with a lot of young pitchers coming up.

Here’s a more important question. When the Birds decided NOT to persue FA pitcher Brad Penny this offseason, were they aware he was dating Karina Smirnoff???

smirnoff

12. ESPN.com’s Eric Karabell says O’s lineup full of fantasy “sleepers”

He’s exactly right. This team is full of “sleepers.” If they all turn out to be rock stars, this team will be in good shape. If they turn out to be sleep-ing, they’ll be in trouble. But a lineup with Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Miguel Tejada, Garrett Atkins, Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold, Luke Scott and Cesar Izturis looks on paper like it might be credible.

At least if someone in that group turns out to be a power hitter.

And finally, I leave you with this.

I have NO IDEA how I missed this, but thank God it was directed back to me. Back when Bruce Springsteen was honored by the Kennedy Center, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder did a version of the Boss’ outstanding tune “My City of Ruins”….

WOW.

Apparently you can buy the song on iTunes to help some sort of charity. Maybe Haiti. Maybe cancer. I should’ve done more research here. Go buy the tune.

Talk to you tonight from College Park.

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…..

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 04 December 2009 by Glenn Clark

Villanova 80, Maryland 73

The Terps aren’t a bad team, but Villanova is a GREAT team. This DOES have the feeling of the years when Maryland would stun teams like Stanford and Kansas at Verizon Center; but I just can’t make the pick.

Morgan State 69, Coppin State 57

If the Bears hadn’t lost 2 straight coming in, I’d probably pick the Eagles to win their opener in their new building. I just don’t think I could see Todd Bozeman’s club losing 3 straight.

Hofstra 84, Towson 72

Charles Jenkins will have 31 points for the Pride, who are just a bit better than the Tigers.

Toledo 72, UMBC 68

I think this one will be remarkably similar to some other losses the Retrievers have suffered this season.

Loyola 77, Canisius 71

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 November 2009 by Glenn Clark

Here are some picks for tonight:

Maryland 80, Cincinnati 69

The Lance Stephenson storyline makes this game more interesting, but Maryland is just better. Cincinnati will compete, but Maryland should win.

UMBC 64, Coppin State 58

In a matchup of two teams struggling to replace their go-to guys (UMBC’s Darryl Proctor and Jay Greene; Coppin’s Tywain McKee); I’ll give the edge to the Retrievers at RAC Arena.

Navy 71, Towson 70

Just because the game is at Alumni Hall.

Morgan State 83, Arkansas 81

Not kidding. I know Drew picked this as well. I really believe Todd Bozeman’s crew wins on the road against their SEC foe.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 November 2009 by Glenn Clark

Don’t have much time to contribute today. I was surprised by John Harbaugh’s candor yesterday, but it was a refreshing change of pace. I still think he needs to cool down on being so rough around the edges. I know it seems trivial, but I truly believe uptight coaches tend to not handle adversity quite as well.

But good for Harbs for taking responsibility for the team’s struggles, emphatically stating that HE needed to improve, and admitting that he screwed up in making the comments he made about Dallas and Philadelphia.

Now he just has to figure the football part out. No problem, right?

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 15 October 2009 by Glenn Clark

SI’s John Lopez throws out an intriguing trade possibility for the Ravens.

DT Brandon McKinney and a draft pick for Texans’ CB Dunta Robinson.

For the record, John Lopez is from Houston, and has covered the Texans. That doesn’t necessarily mean he has any inside sources in the organization; but it is possible.

It couldn’t POSSIBLY make more sense for the Ravens. Trade from strength (D-Line) to try to address a need (Secondary). Does it make sense for the Texans? Maybe.

It’s interesting if nothing else.
