Former Terp Hill to be honored by Maryland Assembly

Posted on 27 January 2014 by WNST Staff

On January 28, 2014 at a joint session of the Maryland Senate and the Maryland House of Delegates Darryl Hill will receive a special state commendation for his work with young athletes. Through a joint resolution the Maryland Assembly, led by Senate President, Mike Miller, will cite Darryl Hill both for his efforts to remove racial barriers from college sports 50 years ago and for his efforts to remove economic barriers in youth sports today.

Darryl Hill was the first African American scholarship athlete to play varsity sports at the University of Maryland and at any major university in the South, as well. When Darryl played football for the Terps in 1963 he opened the doors for all young athletes to play sports at the college of their choice throughout the South. Both Darryl Hill and the University of Maryland will be honored for their important role in the integration of college athletics. University of Maryland President, Wallach Loh, and Athletic Director, Kevin Anderson, will be in attendance.

Currently, Darryl Hill is again an advocate of open opportunity for all young people to play sports. The current commercialization and high costs of youth sports have prohibited many children from participating in and enjoying the benefits of organized sports. In 2013 Darryl founded Kids Play USA Foundation whose mission is to make youth sports affordable and available to all kids. Darryl Hill is dedicated to removing the economic barriers to youth sports and is working to return sports to all kids in Maryland.
