Thursday Crabcakes: What Will Kelley Washington Bring to Ravens?

Posted on 14 May 2009 by Glenn Clark

……other than the dancing of course….

kwash

Multiple outlets are now reporting that the Ravens have indeed signed WR Kelley Washington, who they had brought in for a free agent tryout at their minicamp this weekend. If nothing else, Washington is 6’3″, and the Ravens DESPERATELY need a red zone receiving target. I have no idea if Washington will be the “sizeable option” he once showed promise of being at the University of Tennessee or with the Bengals; but I do know that he will be sizeable, which has to count for something amongst this receiving corps. The Ravens can tell us they like Demetrius Williams and Marcus Smith all they want……my mom used to tell me I was a handsome young man, too.

must

The Stevenson University Mustangs are on to the national semifinals in the Division III NCAA Lacrosse Tournament thanks to an 11-9 victory over Salisbury yesterday in Owings Mills. The Stangs turned a 5-5 game into a 10-5 lead to take the rubber match between the two teams this season. Salisbury will fall short of the national semifinals for the first time since 2002, which is quite remarkable. Jim Berkman’s Gulls probably relied too much on their young scorers this season, but will be back in the picture again next season. The Stangs are now one win away from a trip to Foxborough and a shot at a national championship. With no MAJOR DI openings yet this offseason (sorry to Denver and Dartmouth); I don’t know that Paul Cantabene is necessarily coaching for a better job. But I do think he has to be on the radar of teams like Towson and Maryland, who may have coaches on the hot seat next season.

reimold

Following an 8-6 loss to the Rays in which Adam Jones was forced to leave with a mild hamstring strain; the Orioles have decided to start the Nolan Reimold era. Reimold was called up (and Bob McCrory uncerimoniously sent down) due to the recent injuries to Adam Jones, Luke Scott, and Felix Pie (who homered last night) to provide outfield depth. The Orioles will probably have to figure out a way to let Reimold play significantly, or else his time will be wasted at the big league level. I get the feeling Lou Montanez may not be long for Baltimore…..

painter

Former Florida commit DeShawn Painter has selected NC State instead of Maryland. The 6’10″ power forward prospect would have provided much needed beef to the Terps’ frontcourt; but apparently wanted to play for the great Sidney Lowe (chuckle, chuckle). This is unfortunate for Maryland; but Gary was clearly working hard on this. Jordan Williams and James Padgett will have lofty expectations in a frontcourt where Dino Gregory and Jerome Burney have proven very little; and Landon Milbourne is obviously playing out of position.

preak

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird drew the 2nd position for Saturday’s Preakness; while Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra drew the 13th position and was established as the 8-5 favorite. I no longer make much of anything out of the post position draw; as all of the trainers say they are happy with the spot they received. I also think that at this point, horses have won from just about every spot on the track (including Big Brown winning from the 20th spot at the Derby last year).

Coming up today: Michael Phelps holds a press conference regarding his return to swimming (I’d rather he talk about online poker and strippers-but we’ll take what we can get); and the Orioles visit the Royals (Jeremy Guthrie vs. Gil Meche) in a game that is inexplicably being broadcast by the MLB Network (HUH????).

Sorry for no Crabs and Beer today, I’ll get back to it I promise. Blame Rick from Reisterstown…..

Talk to you tomorrow.

Maryland, Hopkins, Stevenson, Salisbury Keep Title Hopes Alive

Posted on 10 May 2009 by Glenn Clark

A great weekend of College Lacrosse action; with 4 teams from the state of Maryland in action at the D-1 level, and 2 state teams at the D-3 level all in Tournament action.

At the D1 level Saturday, UMBC fell to North Carolina 15-13 behind Billy Bitter’s 8 goals. Carolina will go on to face Duke in the quarterfinals, as the Blue Devils blew out Navy 14-5 after getting out to a 10-0 lead.

Better luck for Johns Hopkins, as the Blue Jays used an OT goal from “Big Shot” Brian Christopher to beat Brown 12-11 at Homewood Field. Dave Pietramala now remains undefeated in home games during the NCAA Tournament at his alma mater.

On Sunday, the Maryland Terrapins won their biggest game of the year; beating previously undefeated Notre Dame 7-3 in South Bend thanks to 9 saves from Brian Phipps (Severn HS); who is a BIG Ravens fan and attended WNST’s AFC Championship Game party in Pittsburgh. LOVE Brian Phipps at NST.

The Jays will get a chance to face Virginia on a VERY neutral field; as they will play the nation’s #1 team Sunday in Annapolis for the right to go to the Final Four. The Terps will face the nation’s #2 team Syracuse Saturday at Hofstra. I imagine there will be a less impartial crowd there (although there are MANY Maryland alums in New Jersey); but the winner of that game will also advance to Foxborough. Face-off times are not yet set; but both games will be aired on ESPNU.

At the D3 level, Saturday was historic for the Stevenson University Mustangs, who survived an 8-7 nailbiter over Cabrini. The win was the first ever NCAA Tournament victory for the Stangs. Meanwhile, Salisbury was also a winner Saturday; crushing Haverford 16-10.

This sets up a 3rd showdown between the Mustangs and the Sea Gulls; who split their two regular season matchups. Stevenson was a 12-8 winner at Salisbury on April 4; while the Gulls bounced back to beat the Stangs 13-5 just 15 days later in Owings Mills for the CAC Championship. The two teams will meet Wednesday at Caves Athletics Complex. Face-off is set for 4pm. The winner plays the Denison/Gettysburg winner Sunday for the trip to the National Championship Game at Gillette Stadium.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 07 May 2009 by Glenn Clark

They SHOULDN’T have played last night’s game. That being said, Ron Gardenhire can’t really complain that they did. Major League Baseball rules dictate that a game is official after 5; and his team was losing at that point.

But clearly they shouldn’t have been trying to play baseball last night. Officials probably didn’t think they could get 2 games in today given the questionable weather, but that’s probably why series aren’t usually scheduled for 2 days.

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 04 May 2009 by Glenn Clark

I filled out my “homer bracket” for the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament this morning; and I have Hopkins, UMBC, Navy, and Maryland all winning in Round 1. I then have Hopkins and UMBC going to the Final Four (which actually departs from my Maryland homerism, but stick with me here); and I have Hopkins falling to Syracuse for the NCAA Championship.

As a Maryland alum, I despise Johns Hopkins. But there’s no argument about Dave Pietramala’s abilities late in the season. He just doesn’t lose. He’s like a machine.

Of course, a Virginia-Cornell-Duke-Syracuse semifinals seems more likely, which means I will spend the final weekend AWAY from Foxborough.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say……

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Why WOULDN’T they run Mine That Bird at Preakness? I’m not saying he’ll win, but he certainly should run (as jockey Calvin Borel told Drew he would).

-There is no fix to the Orioles. When you put together a bad baseball team, you get bad results. The Orioles’ only other trick this season will be bringing Wieters up, which will get them some excitement for like…..a day.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 28 April 2009 by Glenn Clark

Do the Ravens have a plan for the wide receiver position?

I don’t know.

I’m baffled by the Ravens’ decisions at their biggest position of need; and I’m the biggest Derrick Mason fan on the face of the planet. In fact, I thought he was the MVP of the team last season.

If the Ravens go into the season with the same group of Wide Receivers, I just cannot consider them a Super Bowl contender.

But there’s plenty of time.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 21 April 2009 by Glenn Clark

I have no doubt that the Ravens value Brandon Pettigrew-they’re not the only team that values Brandon Pettigrew.

But I DON’T think they will trade up for Pettigrew.

I think a season ago they decided to trade up for Joe Flacco because they NEEDED a QB, desperately.

And while the Ravens could use TE depth, they’re not desperate for a TE. If he slips to 26, they’ll pick him. But they don’t have extra 7th round picks (or even one 7th round pick) to give up to move up to 24.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer (and Boldin)

Posted on 17 April 2009 by Glenn Clark

Having covered Anquan Boldin for 2 seasons with the Cardinals during my exile to Phoenix; I have made my feelings for “Q” very evident during my time with WNST. I think Anquan is not only an outstanding Wide Receiver, I also think he is a tremendous human being.

Acquiring Anquan Boldin would-in my mind-make the Ravens a legitimate Super Bowl contender again, on par with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and Indianapolis Colts in the AFC. A first and third round pick does not seem to be an excessive price to pay for him, either.

But if gets much beyond a first and third, I could certainly understand the Ravens choosing to hold on to their picks and trust their ‘process.’

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

-Navy 11, Hopkins 8. The streak ends Saturday, thanks to a strong performance by Tommy Phelan.
-Maryland 13, Penn 6. If the Terps were to somehow lose in Philadelphia, they’d go right to the NCAA Tournament bubble.
-Loyola 12, Fairfield 6. This SHOULD be a mismatch.
-UMBC 9, Hartford 5. The Retrievers are trying to prove more and more that they are a legitimate Final Four contender. That won’t change this weekend.
-Delaware 8, Towson 6. If Tony Seaman can get his team to turn things around before the end of the season, if will go down as one of his best coaching jobs.
-Salisbury 15, Stevenson 13. No one is beating the Gulls twice in one season.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 02 April 2009 by Glenn Clark

The only interesting thing to come from yesterday’s Ravens Draft Luncheon (The “Liars Luncheon” if you will) was the conversation about the Ravens’ willingness to trade down from the 1st Round. The comments made by the Ravens’ front office staff yesterday really gave the opinion that the team feels good about their current personnel; and doesn’t think they desperately need an additional impact player immediately. (Although I think they know they need a receiver.)

The question for me will be how the Ravens have the first round receivers ranked. For example; let’s say their board has Michael Crabtree 1st, Jeremy Maclin 2nd, Darrius Heyward-Bey 3rd, Kenny Britt 4th, Hakeem Nicks 5th, and Percy Harvin 6th. The question will be how many of those guys the Ravens TRULY value in that spot. If only Nicks and Harvin remain on the board; will they consider trying to trade back to the 34th spot to get Harvin and acquire an extra mid-to-late round pick? I wouldn’t be stunned.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

I think the Cordish family would be able to build the projects the right way; understanding that the areas surrounding the tracks need to help be part of the attraction itself. Pimlico can thrive in the area where it is; but the area needs an upgrade. That being said; I wonder how much Cordish is interested in competing against themselves. If they want slots at Arundel Mills; will they work as hard to attract people to Laurel instead? They’ve done things the right way for a long time, so this could be very good.

Talk to you tomorrow.
