Top 10 Ralph Friedgen Era Victories

Posted on 29 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Yep…it’s another list. Hey, it’s the end of the year.

As Ralph Friedgen’s tenure as University of Maryland football coach comes to a close with this afternoon’s Military Bowl contest against East Carolina at RFK Stadium (Luke Jones hosts our “Turtle Power” live chat here at WNST.net at 2:30), I figured I’d look back on the era of “The Fridge” by remembering his best victories as Maryland football coach.

(Edit from GMC: It was brought to my attention at 9:55am that my friend Patrick Stevens of D1scourse.com posted a similar list at 9:43am. S.O.B. I encourage you to check his list out as well.)

Honorable Mention: Maryland 24, Purdue 7 (December 29, 2006 Champs Sports Bowl Florida Citrus Bowl Orlando, FL); Maryland 35, California 27 (September 13, 2008 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD); Maryland 23, Navy 20 (September 3, 2005 M&T Bank Stadium Baltimore, MD); Maryland 17, Navy 14 (September 6, 2010 M&T Bank Stadium Baltimore, MD); Maryland 26, Wake Forest 0 (October 18, 2008 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD); Maryland 20, Clemson 17 (September 27, 2008 Memorial Stadium Clemson, SC); Maryland 14, Miami 13 (November 11, 2006); Maryland 27, Florida State 24 (October 28, 2006 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD); Maryland 28, Virginia 26 (October 14, 2006 Scott Stadium Charlottesville, VA)

10. Maryland 38, NC State 31 (November 27, 2010 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD)

The last regular season win of Friedgen’s career certainly stands out to some extent.

It looked (at the time) like this was the “statement” win the Terrapins needed with Danny O’Brien under center to prove they were headed in the direction of an ACC title.

They might still be, it just won’t be with Friedgen at the helm.

Wherever Torrey Smith ranks amongst the great players in Friedgen’s tenure, this was clearly his best game. He was absolutely DOMINANT against the Wolfpack…who I have a funny feeling will show up again on this list.

9. Maryland 37, Clemson 20 (November 10, 2001 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD)

This game was already going to be meaningful, as it was the first time Byrd Stadium was sold out in the Friedgen era.

After North Carolina State beat Florida State earlier in the day, the game became very significant-as it put the Terps on the track towards the BCS.

The game itself wasn’t of the epic nature; but the Terps had lost eight straight to the Tigers before finally breaking through.

This was also the first “rush the field” moment in Friedgen’s ten seasons.

It wasn’t quite as big as the team’s next win, but we’ll get to that.

8. Maryland 26, NC State 24 (November 22, 2003 Carter-Finley Stadium Raleigh, NC)

This game was significant for multiple reasons.

First, it finished off a perfect 4-0 record for Friedgen against NCSU while Phillip Rivers was quarterback.

Second, the game did have a bit of an epic nature after Nick Novak missed what would have been a game-tying extra point. Leroy Ambush forced a turnover, and Novak was able to get redemption by kicking the game-winning field goal.

And third, it kept Maryland on track for what would eventually be a Gator Bowl berth on New Year’s Day.

7. Maryland 20, Georgia Tech 17 OT (October 11, 2001 Bobby Dodd Stadium Atlanta, GA)

This might not be high enough on the list. Hell, I know it isn’t high enough on the list. But I already made the list. I’m not changing it now.

This was the very first significant win in the Friedgen era at Maryland, and it was absolutely miraculous.

Yellow Jackets RB Joe Burns inexplicably ran out of bounds late in regulation with his team ahead 17-14; setting up a career long 46 yard field goal by Novak (who had been AWFUL up to that point in his Maryland career) to send the game to overtime. In OT, another Burns fumble would seal the first win over a ranked team for Friedgen at his alma mater.

With the win, Friedgen’s Terps improved to 6-0; forcing fans throughout the Mid-Atlantic to take notice of what was happening in College Park.

6. Maryland 34, Rutgers 24 (September 29, 2007 Rutgers Stadium Piscataway, NJ)

Of all of the wins on this list, this is certainly the most improbable.

When Jordan Steffy went down against the Scarlet Knights, a large number of Maryland fans had to think to themselves “who the hell is Chris Turner?”

They’d find out in a big way.

Perhaps the game was more significant because of the sheer number of then-current or former Garden State residents who went to the University of Maryland.

There were definitely a number of households torn up and down the I-95 corridor because of the matchup.

For Friedgen, it would be the first of two wins over Top 10 opponents that season.

5. Maryland 41, West Virginia 7 (January 1, 2004 Gator Bowl Alltel Stadium Jacksonville, FL)

The ONLY thing about this game that gets it on the list was the fact that it was a New Year’s Day game played on NBC-making it arguably the highest profile win in the Friedgen era.

The game wasn’t exactly exciting, save for some impressive Scott McBrien to Steve Suter theatrics. The matchup was disappointing, as the Terps had already posted a blowout victory over WVU earlier in the year.

It was the third straight high-profile bowl game Maryland reached to start Friedgen’s career. Unfortunately, it was also the last.

It was also the last time Friedgen would collect a victory over the Mountaineers.

Had those last two statements been different, the Friedgen era might not be coming to a close in DC today.

4. Maryland 42, Boston College 35 (November 11, 2007 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD)

When he’s 70 years old, Chris Turner will still be able to tell everyone he talks to that he once beat Matt Ryan.

Ryan entered the Saturday night national TV showdown (ABC) near the front of the Heisman Trophy race. He didn’t necessarily disappoint (421 yards passing and 3TD’s) in front of the College Park crowd, but he was outdone by a guy who was better known for looking like Napoleon Dynamite.

Turner threw for 337 yards and 3TD’s himself, while Lance Ball added 122 yards on the ground and a rushing TD. Maryland was ahead 42-21 in the second half before eventually holding off the Eagles late.

It was an impressive victory for a frustrating team. Friedgen’s Terps beat two Top 10 teams that season, but finished just 6-6 and lost to Oregon State in the Emerald Bowl.

3. Maryland 20, Florida State 17 (October 30, 2004 Byrd Stadium College Park, MD)

Maryland was 0-14 all time against FSU until this game.

Friedgen was ofer in his first three contests against the Seminoles himself until this game.

History will forever note that Joel Statham was the first ever Maryland QB to beat Florida State.

Six years later, I still really can’t believe it happened.

2. Maryland 30, Tennessee 3 (December 31, 2002 Peach Bowl Georgia Dome Atlanta, GA)

You can count Ralph Friedgen’s wins over SEC programs on one finger.

Not only was Maryland’s Peach Bowl romp over the Volunteers the first significantly high-profile (New Year’s Eve on ESPN) non-conference win under Friedgen, it was also the statement game for E.J. Henderson; who will probably go down as the best player of the Friedgen era.

It was the type of win that allowed Maryland fans to measure the progress the Terps had made through two seasons.

It was also the type of win that made fans think more postseason wins over SEC teams would be coming in the future.

Obviously they didn’t.

1. Maryland 23, NC State 19 (November 17, 2001 Carter-Finley Stadium Raleigh, NC)

Shaun Hill and Guilian Gary will forever be remembered as the combination that sent Maryland to their first ACC Championship in 16 years and their first Orange Bowl berth since 1956.

The only unfortunate thing about #1 is that most coaches probably don’t want to be remembered as collecting their most significant victory in their first season.

Friedgen never returned to this moment, but it doesn’t take anything away from the victory itself.

It was an awesome moment in University of Maryland athletics history.

The “Controversial Sports Personalities” of 2010 …..

Posted on 16 December 2010 by Rex Snider

As we make our way into mid-December and the final weeks of the year, excitement starts to build with many people, young and old. From the anticipation (or stresses) of the holidays, to the culmination of another NFL season, many of us look forward to this part of our annual calendar.

In my own way, I look forward to this time of year, because I’m a “list” kinda guy …..

Be it BEST OF, WORST OF, MOST INTRIGUING, MOST OVERRATED, MOST POPULAR, MOST HATED and just about any related combination, I like compiling lists of my personal rankings regarding people and events of any given year.

Of course, my lists revolve around sports, in one context or another. From the famous to the infamous, and the champions to the chokers, I’ll give you the spin on how 2010 shakes out in my conflicted mind.

Today, we’ll begin with the “TEN MOST CONTROVERSIAL SPORTS PERSONALITIES OF THE YEAR” …..
.

10) Lane Kiffin – The ultimate coaching mercenary, huh? Many of us were snookered into believing Kiffin was the sympathetic figure depicted in his dysfunctional ride with Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders. Little did we know his loyalties would tend to run as deep, or shallow, as his former boss …..

Oct 16, 2010; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Southern California Trojans coach Lane Kiffin gestures during the game against the California Golden Bears at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. USC defeated California 48-14. Photo via Newscom

Earlier this year, Lane Kiffin deserted the University of Tennessee – the institution that gave him a second chance – on a whim to return to his coaching roots, at the University of Southern California. Kiffin garnered a lot of rightful criticism for switching jobs, midstream, while so many people, in Tennessee, depended on him.
.

9) Cam Newton – Well, we all know this name, huh? Yet, a year ago at this time, only the hardcore college football fans really knew anything about Newton. Only in America …. can a sports personality rise from anonymity to celebrity, in the span of a few months.

NEW YORK - DECEMBER 11: 2010 Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Newton of the Auburn University Tigers speaks at a press conference at The New York Marriott Marquis on December 11, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images)

I suppose we should really be recognizing Cam’s father, Cecil, for being the “straw that stirred this combustible cocktail.” He obviously lobbied for money in exchange for his son’s services, and regardless of what the NCAA might be saying, most of us don’t really believe young Cam is blameless.

Hmmm …. how long will it take for him to surrender that trophy?

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 13 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Women’s College Basketball: Maryland @ Delaware State (Sunday 4pm from Dover); High School Basketball: Perry Hall @ Parkville (Wednesday 6:30pm), Meade @ Glen Burnie (Friday 7pm); Soccer: MISL-Omaha Vipers @ Baltimore Blast (Saturday 7:35pm 1st Mariner Arena)

10. Usher (Friday 8pm Verizon Center); Sean Kingston (Tuesday 6pm Rams Head Live), Alter Bridge (Thursday 7pm Rams Head Live), KIX (Saturday 8pm Rams Head Live); Wu-Tang Clan (Sunday 8pm Sonar); Aaron Neville (Thursday 8pm Rams Head On Stage); Joe Satriani (Wednesday 8pm Strathmore), O.A.R. (Saturday 8pm Strathmore), Kenny Rogers (Sunday 5pm Strathmore); John Waters Christmas (Thursday 7:30pm Birchmere); Michael Jackson “MICHAEL” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday)

There’s a ZERO percent chance I won’t be in Bethesda Saturday night. OF A REVOLUTION…

I would never go see Sean Kingston live, but I’ll admit that I kinda dig a few of his tunes…

I prefer my Creed to be not so Scott Stapp-y. That’s why I don’t mind Alter Bridge so much…

And while I might dig listening to the ol’ graybeard croon “The Gambler”…

I feel like I might actually prefer another Kenny Rogers show…

9. Glenn Clark’s annual Christmas party (Friday, time and location withheld)

It’s not that I won’t tell you where the party is because I don’t want you to be there. It’s that I can’t tell you for legal reasons. It’s somewhere on the Eastern Side of Baltimore County…sometime this week. Here are some pictures from past parties. You might understand more…

xmas
xmas
xmas

These are simply the ones I’m allowed to show you. It’s going to be epic…and it WILL involve me reading everyone “The Polar Express” at 2am like we were in 4th grade. That’s the way it is.

8. College Football: New Mexico Bowl-BYU vs. UTEP (Saturday 2pm from Albuquerque live on ESPN), uDrove Humanitarian Bowl-Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State (Saturday 5:30pm from Boise live on ESPN), R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: Ohio University vs. Troy (Saturday 9pm from New Orleans live on ESPN)

You know it’s a bad week when THESE games somehow make the list.

I’m not really sure how I can make any of these sound appealing, so I won’t bother.

The FCS semifinals are also next weekend, and I know who I’m rooting for. Georgia Southern is at Delaware Friday night. Since Joe Flacco played for the Blue Hens, I’m with them. Villanova visits Eastern Washington Friday night, and there’s no doubt I’ll be pulling for the Wildcats. What do I have against EWU? Well, it’s the alma mater of a certain clown on ESPN Radio…

cowherd

There’s simply no chance I’m pulling for the school that gave us Colin Cowherd.

7. College Basketball: UMBC @ Morgan State (Saturday 7pm Hill Field House); American @ UMBC (Tuesday 7:30pm RAC Arena); Loyola @ Georgetown (Saturday 12pm from Verizon Center live on MASN)

I’m not legally allowed to type the word Georgetown without immediately following it up with this…

I prefer “elated” Gary Williams to “angry” Gary Williams myself.

6. Boxing: Bernard Hopkins vs. Jean Pascal (Saturday 10pm from Quebec City, Canada live on Showtime), “The Fighter” opens in theaters (Friday)

I found my way onto a screening list for “The Fighter” Tuesday night in White Marsh, and I’m sorta excited. It looks like a really good flick…

Of course, if we’re talking boxing movies, I guess I need to make sure I give a nod to the Hall of Famer…

5. NBA: Los Angeles Lakers @ Washington Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ New Jersey Nets (Thursday 7pm from East Rutherford, NJ live on Comcast SportsNet), Miami Heat @ Washington Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Charlotte Bobcats @ Washington Wizards (Monday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

The circus comes to DC Saturday night, as LeBron James and the preseason NBA champion Heat pay a visit. I wonder what my buddy Mike Polk thinks about it…

4. NHL: Anaheim Ducks @ Washington Capitals (Wednesday 7pm from Washington live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ Boston Bruins (Saturday 7pm from Boston live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Washington Capitals @ Ottawa Senators (Sunday 7:30pm from Ottawa live on Comcast SportsNet)

The DUCKS play the Caps this week? The DUCKS? I know where my support will be…

Gordon Bombay is a hero.

3. Mixed Martial Arts: WEC-Benson Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis (Thursday 9pm from Phoenix live on VERSUS)

There are a group of MMA fighters who are probably going to be a BIT distracted before their big event this week. I mean, they’re headed to Arizona of all places. There’s a little bit going on in the Valley of the Sun…

uofa

(Edit from GMC: I’m well aware that Arizona is in Tucson, not Phoenix. I’m also well aware that Arizona State girls are hotter. But I always post pictures of ASU girls. It was time for me to give a nod to gals from the U of A.)

2. Pro Wrestling: WWE Tribute to the Troops (Saturday 9pm from Fort Hood, Texas on NBC), WWE TLC (Sunday 8pm from Houston live on Pay-Per-View)

A couple of things here. One-the WWE may not be headed to Iraq of Afghanistan like usual, but the military special is ALWAYS the coolest thing they do every year. Just an awesome concept and event. I really dig it.

Speaking of cool concepts-it’s ALWAYS a good thing when the company hosts an event that incorporates Tables, Ladders and Chairs…

1. NFL: New Orleans Saints @ Baltimore Ravens (Sunday 1pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on FOX)

I was really hoping this wasn’t going to be a showdown of 2nd place teams when I looked at the schedule before the season.

In honor of Reggie Bush coming to Charm City, I think there’s only one photo that can finish up this list this week. NO-it’s not a picture of the Heisman Trophy, but I appreciate your humor. I think losing this HAD to be more painful than losing the Heisman for the former USC star…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 09 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because I left “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” playing on a loop on my DVD player the other night, which means I’ve seen THIS scene play out about twenty times now since Thanksgiving. It hasn’t gotten old.

(Edit from GMC: You know damn well there’s an “F word” in this clip. Act accordingly.)

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says John Harbaugh didn’t intend to direct Tuesday night comments to all Baltimore fans

But there’s no doubt how folks in Charm City TOOK the comments, and that’s what Harbaugh is going to have to keep in mind moving forward.

I’m a little spent on Harbaugh comments following my column yesterday comparing him and former Ohio State coach John Cooper (you should go here and read it). I’ve talked to a number of football fans in town over the last 24 hours and there’s no question the comments stuck with fans.

I understand where John Harbaugh’s emotion came from Tuesday night. I understand that he’s as frustrated (if not more) than anyone in town right now.

But he HAS to be more respectful to fans-even when they’re insane. (Edit from GMC: Says the guy who loses his mind on football fans on a regular basis.)

It’s part of the job, whether he wants it to be or not.

2. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens LB Jameel McClain will appeal $40k fine

There’s no doubt McClain’s fine was a bit excessive for a first time offender who had no intent to hit Pittsburgh TE Heath Miller in the head. But something tells me the NFL has decided they need to make a statement in this case because the game was seen by a HUGE audience on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

Make no mistake. This will absolutely be a significant issue as the NFLPA enters labor discussions this offseason and we head towards a potential lockout in 2011. If the league wants any concessions from players regarding revenue, they are almost certainly going to have to concede this outrageous fines even if they are simply trying to protect their players.

It’s not going to be an easy fight.

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Ed Reed believes Steelers WR Hines Ward deserved fine as well

Speaking of fine, here’s a picture of Danielle Dwyer. (Thanks Brosome via Busted Coverage!)

danielled

4. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens lost CB Prince Miller to Detroit Lions, signed CB Danny Gorrer to practice squad

And before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-The Ravens return to the practice field at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills today. Harbaugh, QB Joe Flacco, RB Ray Rice, LB Ray Lewis and others are scheduled to address the media. We’ll have full coverage, so make sure you stay tuned to AM1570 WNST, follow us on Twitter (@WNST) and keep checking back at WNST.net.

-Did you miss Ravens TE Ed Dickson with Drew Forrester Thursday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today to check it out. Some other things you can hear in the Audio Vault include…

 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Thursday
 • Michael Bradley (Philadelphia Magazine)-who talked about his decision to not give his Heisman Trophy vote to Cam Newton with Drew Thursday
 • Our Morning Reaction “Cheap Shots From The Bleachers”, as Drew took a shot at Cam Newton winning the Heisman, and Glenn Clark took a shot at fans who don’t “get” the Army/Navy Game
 • Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News)-who went around the NFL with Rex Snider Wednesday on “The Afternoon Drive”
 • Barry Barnes (Fanhouse)-who went around the AFC North with Rex Wednesday
 • Jean Fugett Jr. (Former Washington Redskins & Dallas Cowboys TE)-who discussed the loss of Todd Heap with Rex Wednesday
 • Lee Hull (Terps WR Coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for “The Terrapins Coaches’ Report”
 • Steve Beck (Military Bowl Executive Director)-who discussed the Maryland-East Carolina matchup with Thyrl Wednesday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”
 • Mike Bauman (MLB.com)-who checked in with Thyrl Wednesday from the MLB winter meetings in Orlando
 • Plenty of audio from 1 Winning Drive Wednesday; including Dickson, Jameel McClain, Le’Ron McClain, Todd Heap, Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin and Kelly Gregg
 • Post-game audio from Maryland’s win over UNC Greensboro last night; including Gary Williams, Jordan Williams, Cliff Tucker and Adrian Bowie

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so make sure you take a few minutes today to check it out. You know you want to.

5. MLB.com’s Kelly Thesier says Orioles, Minnesota Twins could finalize deal for JJ Hardy today

Between this and Mitch Atkins, I’m not sure how the Birds CAN’T win the World Series next year!

If they’re still looking to make a splash before the end of the meetings, I have a suggestion for Andy MacPhail. Consider Alina Vacariu. (Thanks Guyism!)

vacariu

(Edit from GMC: UPDATE-CBSSports.com now says the deal is done. Hooray!)

6. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says O’s agreed to terms with Koji Uehara on one year deal

I don’t know if this has ever happened before, but if I were the Orioles I might go ahead and consider a ticker tape parade BEFORE Spring Training.

The Orioles made other news Wednesday, as they distanced themselves from comments made by Luke Scott in an interview with Yahoo! Sports.

I can’t imagine why…

7. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Adrian Bowie, Cliff Tucker respond to adversity as Maryland crushed UNC Greensboro

The Spartans stink. That being said, even they could beat Penn State.

Gary Williams said after the game he considered making lineup changes following the Terps’ poor offensive output against Temple in the BB&T Classic.

Cliff Tucker said he didn’t know he was starting until earlier in the day Wednesday.

Gary Williams WANTS to stick with Tucker and Bowie all season. Fans want to see Terrell Stoglin and Pe’Shon Howard in the lineup.

What ends up happening will have everything to do with whether or not Tucker and Bowie can play with consistency over the next few weeks.

Maryland opens ACC play Sunday afternoon (4pm on Comcast SportsNet/Fox Sports Net) when they host Boston College at Comcast Center.

8. TowsonTigers.com says Josh Brown and Rashawn Polk scored 18 points each, but Towson couldn’t hold off George Washington in DC

A loss to the Colonials probably won’t impress anyone, but a six point game against GWU at the Smith Center is likely a sign of progress for Pat Kennedy’s team. One major problem from last night? They got just one point from Troy Franklin. I don’t think they’ll win many games that way.

Towson now heads to Catonsville next for a contest with UMBC at RAC Arena Saturday night. The Retrievers had a rough night last night, as they were pounded by Rider 81-39. I’d tell you something about that game, but what the hell is there to say?

9. The AP says Shane Walker & Robert Olson each scored 14, but Loyola lost to George Mason in Fairfax

Tough night for Jimmy Patsos’ Greyhounds last night at the Patriot Center.

In honor of the holiday season, I’m going to try to make some spirits bright here. Here’s a picture of Tehmeena Afzal. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

afzal

10. Washington Post’s Eric Prisbell says Terrapins Offensive Coordinator James Franklin finalist for head coaching gig at Vanderbilt

This COULD end up being helpful for Kevin Anderson and the folks in College Park.

James Franklin did a HELL of a job with Danny O’Brien this season. Should he leave for the Commodores, his leadership would be missed.

But the Terps have a MESS on their hands with this transition. Either they’re going to have to force Ralph Friedgen out and give the job to Franklin (which didn’t seem so unlikely a season ago), or they’re going to have to dish out a million bucks they don’t have.

If Franklin heads to Nashville, Maryland avoids that problem. Either they can extend Friedgen should he have another good season or they can hire whatever available coach they want to hire.

But bear in mind-the leadership at the University of Maryland WANTED James Franklin to be the next head coach. The move wasn’t just made to keep him from going back to Kansas State. They ABSOLUTELY thought Franklin represented what they wanted in a head coach.

It’s just become a much stickier situation than they originally expected.

And finally, I leave you with this.

Time for a few new versions of “The Greatest Song(s) of All Time This Week.”

It’s a Christmas edition this time around.

The retro version of TGSOATTW is “Christmas Song” by Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds. WIN.

The new version is the version of “Last Christmas” they did on GLEE. Please don’t judge me because I like this.

9. Inception“, “Shrek Forever After” and “Boy Meets World Season 4” available in stores (Tuesday)

You know why Season 4 of Boy Meets World was the best one? It was the season that featured the “Sixteen Candles and 400 Pound Men” episode. You know, where Cory Matthews had to help his friend Frankie with his father (Vader)’s match against Jake “The Snake” Roberts while also being there to dance with Topanga Lawrence at her 16th birthday party.

Yeah, I’m a nerd. But this is a great episode. It’s an ode to The Flintstones episode where Fred Flintstone has to be in two places at once. Here’s the end of the episode…

8. Boxing: IBF/WBO Heavyweight Championship-Vladimir Klitschko vs. Dereck Chisora (Saturday 5pm from Mannheim, Germany live on ESPN3.com), Yonnhy Perez vs. Joseph Agbeko, Abner Mares vs. Vic Darchinyan (Saturday 9pm from Tacoma, Washington live on Showtime)

I’ll be forced to admit that I could not have told you who held the IBF, WBO, WBA, HBO, NBA, NWA, OPP, TLC, IWIF, MIAA, NAACP or UNICEF heavyweight titles.

And frankly, I have nothing to offer to a boxing discussion that would be of value. Except that the “Floyd Wetherton” character on Family Guy was an amazing combination of both very sad and very funny…

7. Soccer: MISL-Missouri Comets @ Baltimore Blast (Saturday 7:35pm 1st Mariner Arena); College Soccer: NCAA Championship Game (Sunday 4pm from Santa Barbara, CA live on ESPN2)

Obviously there’s little to no interest in the College Cup now because Maryland lost to Michigan Saturday, eliminating the Terrapins from the NCAA Tournament.

I’d like to give you another reason to watch Friday and Sunday, but I honestly don’t have it.

Instead, I’ll discuss something much more significant in the world of soccer. A recent news story about the breakout soccer star of 2010.

You’ll remember Larissa Riquelme as the Paraguay soccer fan who captivated the attention of the world during this summer’s World Cup. NOW you’ll remember her as the girl who recently wore this dress…

6. NBA: Washington Wizards @ Los Angeles Lakers (Tuesday 10:30pm from LA live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ Sacramento Kings (Wednesday 10pm from Sacramento live on Comcast SportsNet), New York Knicks @ Washington Wizards (Friday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

If you’re a fan of the ‘Zards (I’ve heard a rumor there are a handful of you out there somewhere, but I haven’t actually MET any of you in my life), I suggest you not watch their game with me Tuesday night. I’ll be rooting hard for the Lakers.

Not because I’m some sort of bandwagon Lakers fan, trust me.

I’ll be rooting hard for the Lakers because this guy plays for them…

Steve Blake will always be a hero to me.

5. NHL: Carolina Hurricanes @ Washington Capitals (Thursday 7pm from Verizon Center live on VERSUS & Comcast SportsNet), Colorado Avalanche @ Washington Capitals (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ New York Rangers (Sunday 7pm from New York live on Comcast SportsNet & NHL Network)

You already know I’m not a fan of the Caps, so let’s just move on from that.

I’m not sure if this particular dress…

…is available in a Phoenix Coyotes style, I know what “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” will be getting for Christmas this year. And will be wearing to every function we attend in 2011.

4. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC 124-Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck (Saturday 10pm from Montreal live on Pay-Per-View)

Since the fight is happening in Montreal, I know damn well who I’m picking to win…

youppi

Youppi is awesome. Oh…of course I’m picking GSP to win. He’s fighting Josh Koscheck. Who the hell am I supposed to pick there?

3. College Basketball: UNC-Greensboro @ Maryland (Wednesday 7:30pm from Comcast Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Boston College @ Maryland (Sunday 4pm from Comcast Center live on Fox Sports Net-CSN locally in Charm City); Towson @ UMBC (Saturday 7pm RAC Arena); Towson @ George Washington (Wednesday 7pm Smith Center); Navy @ Coppin State (Tuesday 7:30pm Coppin State Physical Education Complex), West Virginia Tech @ Coppin State (Saturday 4pm Coppin State Physical Education Complex); Loyola @ George Mason (Wednesday 7pm from Patriot Center live on MASN), Mt. St. Mary’s @ Loyola (Saturday 4pm Reitz Arena)

I’m torn here. On one side, I’m very happy to see the start of ACC season. On the other side, the Terps’ loss to Temple in the BB&T Classic leaves me just a bit concerned.

I know this much. If I see ANY of you wearing this shirt this week, I might very well take a swing at you…

2. College Football: Army/Navy Game (Saturday 2:30pm from Philadelphia live on CBS); Heisman Trophy Presentation (Saturday 8pm from New York live on ESPN)

My ABSOLUTE favorite game of the year in any sport.

I doubt they’ll show this video up at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday, but if they did-I’m not sure how the Midshipmen COULDN’T be inspired…

1. NFL: Baltimore Ravens @ Houston Texans (Monday 8:30pm from Houston live on ESPN)

The Monday Night Football trip will be my first to Houston.

For anyone who has made the trip before, can you tell me anything about this place? I’m told I HAVE to hit it while I’m there…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 15 July 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday-

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because Drew and I were discussing our (high school) alma maters this morning; and I found out some interesting things.

You may know that Drew graduated (reportedly) from Glen Burnie High School. What you may NOT know is that there are a number of other significant former Gophers, including former Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Tony Saunders (who was on with Rex Snider yesterday here at AM1570 WNST); Kansas City Chiefs OT Branden Albert and singer Toni Braxton.

I am a proud Perry Hall High School graduate, and if you check our Wikipedia page; we have plenty of notable alumni as well. Former Delegates Alfred Redmer and James Ports; Tonja Walker from “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital”; and CNN’s Reggie Aqui. Oh, and there’s another one…Craig M Horlacher. Not familiar with Craig Horlacher? Let’s see what Wikipedia says about Craig…

“Craig M Horlacher, (GUINESS) Largest weiner size ever recorded

Let’s go Gators!

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Cal Ripken may join Orioles in part time advisory role, then transition to full time position after son Ryan Ripken graduates

This is the first sort of “clarity” we’ve received about what exactly is being considered by the Iron Man, Andy MacPhail and Peter Angelos. This is a logical role, although the question of what exactly Cal would be “advising” still comes to mind.

The easy answer would be “personnel”, as despite Cal’s incredible business accumen, I doubt he’s getting involved with the organization to give his ideas for how MASN can help market Adam Jones.

An organization would Cal Ripken involved for the advice he can offer to baseball players and regarding baseball players. He has value in Sarasota offering advice about fielding and staying healthy (Felix Pie should be the first player he talks to), but he also has value in the Warehouse telling Andy MacPhail “you know, I just don’t think Garrett Atkins fits the bill for what we’re looking for.”

Of course, now we’re entering the potential world of having “too many chefs in the kitchen.” Andy MacPhail is responsible for baseball decisions; but no one REALLY believes Peter Angelos has completely removed himself from that area. The organization is set to hire Buck Showalter as manager, and EVERYONE who knows ANYTHING about Buck Showalter has confirmed that he is going to have to have a hand in baseball and personnel decisions, if not more than that.

Now there’s a chance Cal Ripken joins that group.

Look, I don’t think ANYTHING bad can come from having Cal involved with the organization; and clearly they can use as much help as they can get in the baseball operations department. But this could end up being a combustible situation.

Of course, when you’re 29-59 it’s certainly worth trying.

2. WNST.net’s Jay Trucker says former Birds closer George Sherrill placed on waivers by Los Angeles Dodgers

Jay points out in his column that MacPhail deserves some credit for “selling high” with Sherrill. I had no problem myself with the trade-as it appeared that the team got two reasonable prospects back in Josh Bell and Steve Johnson.

If we’re being completely fair though, Bell and/or Johnson need to produce at the big league level for us to TRULY say this was a good trade. Otherwise, it was a trade that cost the team a closer ahead of an annual tailspin.

As far as those who think the Orioles should try to re-acquire Sherrill for the 2nd half of the season are concerned, well….okay. Sherrill may be well served by returning to a no-pressure role in Charm City (maybe a 7th inning role); but I wouldn’t be in a rush to run out and bring back “Flat Breezy.”

As far as whether or not I thought George Sherrill would ulimately struggle at Chavez Revine?

“Never a doubt George, never a doubt.”

3. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says O’s will spend 2nd half trying to avoid worst record in franchise history

I really don’t want to think about this.

In fact, instead of thinking about this, let’s think about Rosie Jones. (Thanks Guyism!)

rosiejones

4. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Steve Bumbry homered for Delmarva Shorebirds on farm

Before we move on from the Orioles, a couple of things…

-After missing Mike Gonzalez yesterday, we missed Billy Rowell this morning as well. Damn. BUT-if you missed Rich Dubroff from the Carroll County Times or Golf.com/SI’s David Dusek live from the British Open at St. Andrew’s with Drew Forrester this morning-make sure you check it out today in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net.

-I found out this morning Sidney Ponson retired from professional baseball. Is this news? Did we know this before? How did I miss this? So long “Sir Sid”…we’ll always have…the memories???

5. National Football Post’s Joe Fortenbaugh says addition of Anquan Boldin means Ravens ‘have Super Bowl contender written all over them’

Which is about the most common theme I can think of when it comes to this football team.

The Ravens BEFORE acquiring Anquan Boldin were a team that was very good and had a chance to compete to win the AFC North. The Ravens AFTER acquiring Anquan Boldin are a team that has a REAL chance to get to Dallas for the Super Bowl.

Like I keep saying, just because they’re a Super Bowl CONTENDER doesn’t mean they’ll WIN the Super Bowl. The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets are Super Bowl CONTENDERS as well.

This is the part where I’m supposed to say “that’s why they play the games.”

6. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Ravens report fans have suffered injuries in Westminster

Which doesn’t surprise me at ALL. We’ve all seen it. It doesn’t mean the Ravens came up with a perfect policy to fix the problem (Edit from GMC: I think it’s far from it), but fan behavior and unruly crowds HAVE been a problem at McDaniel College. That’s really not arguable.

Now, if Brooke Erickson comes to Training Camp next year, I don’t care what policy is in place. There’s going to be trouble with unruly crowds (Thanks COED Magazine via Busted Coverage!)…

erickson

7. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says John Beck expects ‘battle’ for QB job in Training Camp

Which is something we really haven’t discussed much.

When the Ravens acquired Marc Bulger, it was so widely assumed that Troy Smith would be dealt that we basically just started putting together a 53 man roster without including him.

But with the Philadelphia Eagles apparently likely to hold on to Michael Vick; the one realistic trade scenario that was presented appears to be gone.

The Ravens will NOT just be giving Troy Smith away, no matter how quickly some fans would like to see him go. If he isn’t traded, he and Beck will be set for a battle for the #3 QB job…a battle that Smith would CLEARLY be the favorite to win.

It isn’t popular necessarily, but it’s reality. Troy Smith might not LIKE being the team’s 3rd QB-but he might not have a choice. It might be the only job available.

And Troy Smith might very well be the best option for the Ravens as a 3rd QB.

We’ll have to wait and see what quarterbacks get hurt between now and Week 1. That would clearly impact where Smith could possibly end up.

8. ABC2′s Tia Craddock says Michael Phelps gave Baltimore City summer school students free swim lessons

Like I said yesterday, I think this is a great thing. I have said for some time that Phelps should be more visible with his charity and community involvement here in Baltimore; as he is likely the most recognized Baltimorean worldwide.

But with no offense to Michael-if I had my choice; I’d probably prefer to get my swim lessons from Lisa Angeline (Thanks NextRound.net via Uproxx!)…

lisaa

9. D1scrouse’s Patrick Stevens says Navy QB Ricky Dobbs named to Davey O’Brien Award watch list

Some of my feelings towards Ricky Dobbs are similar to my feelings towards former Morgan State Bears guard Reggie Holmes. I just really enjoy watching some college athletes-and Ricky Dobbs is ABSOLUTELY one of them.

There’s a new @DobbsForHeisman Twitter account that is pretty awesome. Not quite as awesome as getting a response from the Old Spice guy on YouTube, but it’s still pretty good…

And by the way, Patrick and I posted a new D1scast this week discussing his preseason Top 25 Football poll, the new ACC TV deal, and why hitting “Reply All” isn’t always a great idea. Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault to check it out!

10. Washington Post’s Steve Yanda says Maryland, Texas in negotiations for future football series

I understand that the Terps will make a bunch of money from this series-and that’s important. But as I said on Twitter last night (follow us @WNST), it offers NOTHING football-wise. It’s a bit of a no-win; and I’m not sure how many recruits will be overly impressed by watching the Terrapins get pummeled by 35 points by the Longhorns at FedEx Field.

Now, playing a game in Austin (or Dallas, or Houston, or San Antonio) WILL get the next Maryland football coach (be it James Franklin or whoever else) in front of recruits in The Lone Star State. That IS a good thing.

And as I mentioned before, money is a factor. Cue AC/DC….

And finally, I leave you with this.

I get a lot of questions about some of the music that’s played on the show. I figured I’d share a couple of the songs I get a particular number of questions about. One is “French Navy” by Camera Obscura…

Another is “I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep On Dancing” by Mike Doughty. At least the title isn’t too long…

If you want to know about anything else we play on the show, feel free to let me know.

Questions Continue to be Answered During Draft Season

Posted on 02 April 2009 by Glenn Clark

This is part 5 in a series chronicling the players whose names you should probably know before Roger Goodell heads to the podium April 25 at Radio City Music Hall. Here are Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4. Now here’s the list of players I’ve profiled for you….

CB’s Sean Smith (Utah), Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest), D.J. Moore (Vanderbilt), Vontae Davis (Illinois), Darius Butler (UConn), Jairus Byrd (Oregon), Kevin Barnes (Maryland)
WR’s Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland), Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina), Kenny Britt (Rutgers), Percy Harvin (Florida), Derrick Williams (Penn State), Kevin Ogletree (Virginia), Deon Butler (Penn State), Louis Murphy (Florida)
LB’s Clint Sintim (Virginia), Clay Matthews (USC), Larry English (Northern Illinois), James Laurinaitis (Ohio State), Darry Beckwith (LSU)
TE’s Brandon Pettigrew (Oklahoma State), Chase Coffman (Missouri), Travis Beckum (Wisconsin), Jared Cook (South Carolina)
K Graham Gano (Florida State)
DE Aaron Maybin (Penn State), Lawrence Sidbury (Richmond)
OT Eben Britton (Arizona)
C Edwin Williams (Maryland), Alex Mack (Cal)
S Louis Delmas (Western Michigan)
QB’s Brian Hoyer (Michigan State), Pat White (West Virginia)

Certainly there has been some action since last Thursday’s update; including the USC Pro Day and the Ravens’ annual “Liars Luncheon” Wednesday. While we may have not learned too much at the Luncheon; there were some interesting tidbits. Thanks again to the Carroll County Times for information on who the Ravens are interested in; and to NFL Draft Scout for information on the prospects’ numbers at the Combine, etc.

Tony Fiammetta (FB, Syracuse): The Ravens told the Frederick News-Post’s Stan Goldberg earlier this week that they viewed Fiammetta as a “sleeper” in this year’s Draft; but Fiammetta might be much more than that. The Walkersville High product his been solid during “Draft season”, with scouts impressed by his blocking and pass catching at the Senior Bowl. He posted a 4.58 time in the 40 during the Combine; and measured in a 6’0″, 242 pounds at Syracuse’s Pro Day. With Ozzie Newsome less than committal to the idea of bringing Lorenzo Neal back; Fiammetta could very well be an option for the Ravens, likely to go in the 4th or 5th round.

Beanie Wells (RB, Ohio State): The Ravens’ decision to bring in Beanie Wells for a visit this week might have caught some fans off guard, but it hits on a few strategies the Ravens are or could be envoking. One, the Ravens have always maintained that they will take the “best player available” in the Draft. Wells is obviously amongst the most talented players available this year; but there don’t appear to be a whole lot of teams looking for RB’s in Round 1. If Wells is available at 26; it is wholeheartedly conceivable that the Ravens will view him as the best available player. The immediate question fans ask is “where is there room for Wells on the Ravens’ roster?” Here’s a scenario: Should the Ravens choose not to bring back Lorenzo Neal, they will need a starting fullback. Le’Ron McClain could well move into that role again, being a fullback who gets a number of carries. If so, the Ravens would have to either decide to trust Willis McGahee (that seemed unlikely a season ago), give the job to Ray Rice (who REALLY doesn’t appear to have the size of an every down back), or bring in someone new. Wells has the ability to be explosive; he was considered to be the Heisman frontrunner before suffering a toe injury in Week 1. He’s 6’1″, 235, and ran a 4.52 40. The guy could be very special at the next level.

Greg Toler (CB, St. Paul’s): Toler is looking to become the first ever player drafted from St. Paul’s, a small rural school in Virginia. Toler has been compared to 2008 first round pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who came from a small school himself (Tennessee State, which isn’t as small as St. Paul’s-which I can honestly admit I had never heard of until the Ravens reported interest in Toler). Toler is a bit undersized (5’11″, 191); but is lightning fast (4.45 40). He did not garner a Combine invite; but he has worked out privately for the Ravens; as well as the Browns, Jets, Redskins, and Cardinals. He is not a lock to get drafted at all; but could end up working his way into the 2nd day; and could be a sleeper to make a roster.

Dan Gronkowski
(TE, Maryland): Gronkowski was never a major numbers guy at Maryland; but was very consistent and was never afraid to make a hit. In fact, during an interview with Drew Forrester on “The Comcast Morning Show” this week, Gronkowski said he was proud of his blocking abilities, and knew it would help him improve his Draft status. Gronkowski was a rock star during the Combine; finishing 3rd amongst Tight Ends on the bench. His speed (4.79 in the 40) may not be earth shattering; but considering his sizeable frame (6’6″, 255), it’s still pretty impressive. Gronkowski is projected to go somewhere between the 3rd and 5th rounds; and could well be an option for the Ravens, who are believed to be interested in selecting a Tight End at some point during Draft weekend.

Andre Smith (OT, Alabama): Winston Churchill created the famous “It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma” line in 1939, but similar words could easily be used to describe Andre Smith. Smith had a TREMENDOUS season with the Crimson Tide; and was in the running to be the #1 pick in the Draft. But he was suspended for Alabama’s Sugar Bowl loss due to contact with an agent; left Indianapolis altogether during a disastrous weekend at the Combine; and showed up out of shape for his Pro Day putting up poor numbers in the 40 and on the bench. But Smith’s talent is still intriguing, and many still see him as a potential Top 10 pick. The Ravens are meeting with him; and if he falls, coming from Alabama certainly won’t hurt him in Ozzie Newsome’s eyes.

Brian Cushing (LB, USC): With 3 USC linebackers all expected to be selected in the 1st Round (Rey Maualuga and Clay Mattews are the others), there is an almost daily debate as to whom is believed to be the most talented. Cushing moved from DE to OLB last season; collecting 48 tackles, 3 sacks, and an INT. He has played all LB positions (as well as DE) during his career at USC. Cushing posted a 4.68 40 at the Combine; shouldering a 6’3″, 243 pound frame. Cushing has had injury issues during his career; but the biggest negative against him are the steroid rumors that have followed him during his career as a Trojan. While never testing positive; there has been an ongoing belief that Cushing has used illegal substances. In fact, NFL.com reported that an unnamed GM said Cushing has been rumored to have used steroids since high school (the report came out around the time of the Combine). While his talent might have him off the board before the Ravens pick at 26; individual concerns could lead teams to pass on him before the Ravens reach the podium.

Robert Ayers (DE, Tennessee): The Ravens have reportedly worked out Ayers (or are planning to work out Ayers); and there is an obvious connection. Ayers is represented by Eastern Athletic Services; a company based right here in Hunt Valley. Ayers has been a riser during Draft season; a player who was originally thought of as a likely 2nd round pick may now go as high as the Top 15. Ayers’ 2008 numbers are similar to those of Cushing (49 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT); but his size is clearly what scouts are drooling over. He’s 6’3″, 272 pounds; and ran a 4.77 40 at the Combine. Ayers was arrested in 2005 for aggravated assault; but stayed out of trouble after that. It seems more and more likely that he won’t be available when the Ravens pick; but they’re clearly interested, and could very well pounce should he fall.

Andre Brown (RB, NC State): The Ravens’ decision to work out Brown may be nothing more than a decision to give a former Baltimore kid (who spent a year attending Woodlawn High) the chance to hold another workout and get more experience. But it also might well be that the Ravens believe Brown could be a similar player in the 2nd round as Beanie Wells in Round 1. Brown was explosive at times during his career in Raleigh; combining for over 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in ’08 to go with 9 TD’s. He has a history of injuries (including breaking his left foot twice); but scouts love his 4.37 time in the 40. He’s 6’0″, 224 pounds; and has caught 54 passes over the last 2 seasons.

Mike Thomas (WR, Arizona): After putting up explosive numbers during his junior campaign (1,027 yards, 11 TD receptions); Thomas’ senior season was slightly disappointing, although productive nonetheless (826 yards, 4 TD receptions). Scouts are certainly most concerned about his size (Thomas is just 5’8″ and 195 pounds); but they are most excited about his speed (4.30 40). Sources tell me the Ravens haven’t shown as much interest in Thomas as other teams have; which may be a sign that the team is more interest in a big receiver early in the Draft. Thomas is projected to go anywhere from the 2nd to 4th round; and could also make an impact as a return man-which might have been more intriguing to the Ravens before they signed Chris Carr.

Mike Teel (QB, Rutgers): Teel is a reported Ravens visitor; which seems strange considering the team has re-signed Todd Bouman, giving them 3 quarterbacks on their roster. But this team has already looked at 2 quarterbacks (Brian Hoyer and Pat White); and Ozzie Newsome would not rule out the team drafting a QB. There are a few issues here. 1-the Ravens were clearly affected by the lack of depth at the QB position last year in Training Camp; forcing Joe Flacco to play an entire preseason game. If they can acquire a 7th round pick (or if Teel goes undrafted), he could be a prime candidate to help give the team depth in Camp. This could be an especially important advantage with the Ravens already having former teammate Ray Rice, and having the possibility of adding Kenny Britt in Round 1. Having a former teammate join them in Camp could help the growth of the former Scarlet Knights. Another issue that must be considered is how much the Ravens plan to use Troy Smith outside of the natural QB position. If the team intends to expose Smith more; they would be wise to add another quarterback as insurance. Teel is 6’3″, 225 pounds; and bounced back after a very difficult start to his senior season. He finished the year with 25 TD’s and 13 picks; but was also sacked 16 times and isn’t particularly mobile.

The Juice Wasn’t Worth The Squeeze

Posted on 05 December 2008 by Alex Thomas

The Honorable Judge Jackie Glass said it best: “you’ve been locked up in the Clark County Detention Center…because of arrogance or ignorance – or both.”

Buffalo Bills standout running back and Heisman Trophy winner OJ Simpson was sentenced today on charges of kidnapping, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. Simpson will serve a minimum of 15 years with the possibility of parole after 5 years.

Judge Glass also tacked on an additional 3-6 years, which will be served consecutively to the 15 years. This means that even after he is up for parole after 5 years he still must serve the additional time unless the parole board rules otherwise.

All in all, OJ is looking at a minimum of 8-10 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections. I guess the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

During his personal statement, OJ’s voice was quivering and he appeared to have tears in his eyes. Despite how he looked and how many times he said “I’m sorry,” he continued to make excuses for his selfish and violent actions. He continued to perpetuate this ridiculous excuse about how he was trying to get back his own property for the sake of his family.

But instead of going to the police or a lawyer, for some reason, he felt it was necessary to burst into a hotel room waving a gun around to start handing down some vigilante justice. You would think that after all the legal trouble this guy has been in over the past fifteen years he would learn a lesson or two about what’s legal and what’s not.

Fred Goldman and Kim Goldman, the father and sister of Ron Goldman who was murdered along with Nicole Brown-Simpson back in 1994, were in the Nevada courtroom today. Finally, there is some retribution for this family, which was evident by the look of satisfaction on Fred Goldman’s face as Judge Glass handed down the sentence.

This sentencing occurred 13 years too late for the Goldman family.

Better late than never.

Weekend 15-7-0

Posted on 10 November 2008 by Glenn Clark

You know how this works. 15 deserve props, 7 got lucky, and one is a total zero. 15-7-0. And remember; we’ll get to the Ravens on Tuesday.

These deserve to be “propped”……

1-Daniel Murray

I would recommend Daniel Murray never move out of his native Iowa City. Because for the rest of his life; if anyone ever hands him a bar tab or a dinner bill; all he needs to do is pull out the newspaper clipping of what he did Saturday night. The Hawkeyes’ kicker hadn’t made a FG since the opening game of the season; but was called on with just 8 seconds left and Iowa trailing undefeated Penn State 23-21. The freshman Murray was true from 31; giving Iowa their biggest win in over 15 years; and making sure the rest of us wouldn’t have to worry about seeing a Big Ten team play for the national title again.

2-Brent Johnson

Make it 3 straight starts for Johnson; who recorded 28 saves for the Caps in their 3-1 win over the Rangers Saturday night. Mixed into the performance was a VERY impressive penalty shot stop on Chris Drury in the 3rd period to keep the Caps ahead. The Caps have now recorded at least 1 point in every home game this season.

3-Kerry Collins

Maybe inspired by the chants of heard earlier this week in Chicago; the Titans used the same chant when asked if they could figure out a way to beat the Bears at Soldier Field if they weren’t able to run-“Yes We Can”. The veteran Collins was 30/41 for 289 yards and 2 TD’s; and the Titans are now 9-0. How early can they clinch the AFC South?

4-Joe Calzaghe

Forgive me if I’m not gushing over a man who has defeated graybeards Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins this year; but Calzaghe still deserves praise. Saturday night’s fight was a dominant performance, as Calzaghe won every round but the first for a unanimous decision over Jones. If nothing else; hopefully this loss will prevent anyone from feeling the need to spend money on Roy Jones again in the future; although there was a time where he was the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

5-Mike Leech

Graham Harrell threw for over 450 yards, sure. But #2 Texas Tech’s win over #9 Oklahoma State should be credited to Leech. The distractions facing the Raiders were numerous last week, as they had the attention of the national media following their emotional win over Texas last week (the biggest in the history of the program). There were the discussions about where the Raiders belonged in the Top 25 and BCS rankings; the talk of next week’s showdown with Oklahoma, and even rumors swirling about Leech’s own future in Lubbock with the Tennessee job opening. It wouldn’t have been surprising if the Raiders had allowed the Cowboys to jump out to an early lead given the entire situation. But Coach Leech kept his team poised; and they pounced on OK State early an often on their way to a 56-20 victory.

6-The Quarterbacking Matts (Matt Ryan and Matt Cassel)

Ryan continues to make Joe Flacco a non-factor in the race for the NFL Rookie of the Year award, throwing for another 248 yards and TD’s as the Falcons beat the Saints. Cassel was 23-34 for 234 and rushed for a TD as the Patriots also got an important division win over the Bills. Meanwhile Matt Leinart………ummm……..

7-The Running Joneses (Thomas Jones and Maurice Jones-Drew)

MJD was called a “Fantasy Football Hall of Famer” in previous ESPN commercials; and his 2nd quarter was the type of performance that might back that claim up. MJD found the endzone three times in the 2nd quarter as the Jags shook off their loss to the Bengals to beat the Lions 38-14. Thomas Jones added 3 TD’s of his own as the Jets SHACLACKED the Rams 47-3 (it was 40-0 at the half!). Heck, even Julius Jones had 88 yards for the Seahawks, but they were losers in Miami.

8-NBA Big Men: Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler & even Shaquille O’Neal

Bosh tallied 30 points and 15 boards for the Raptors in their 89-79 win over the Bobcats.
Howard had 31 points and 16 boards for the Magic in their 106-81 win over the Wizards.
Chandler had 13 points and 10 boards for the Hornets in their 100-89 win over the Heat.
Shaq had 29 points and 11 boards for the Suns in their 104-96 win over the Bucks.
Even Carlos Boozer had a big game for the Jazz in their first loss. It was a good weekend to be a big man.

9-Zack Kane

He pitched a clean sheet against Parkville last week; and did it again Saturday night to move the Gators into the 4A finals. Kane was masterful with 10 saves in regulation, then followed it up by giving up just one goal in PK’s to hand Perry Hall the win. It was Kane’s 12th shutout of the year; and when you do that at my alma mater; you make the list.

10-Roger Wrenn and the Poly Engineers

DigitalSports.com tells me that City’s Ellis Foster was on the cusp of becoming the first QB in City-Poly history to go 4-0 against their rival, as the Knights held a 13-0 lead over Poly at halftime in the historic 120th meeting between the two schools. But Coach Wrenn and the Engineers rallied in the 2nd half; reeling off 16 points in front of 6,500 fans at M&T Bank Stadium for a 3 point win. In the process, Poly may well have stolen a spot in the playoffs from City.

11-Darren Evans

This is a tough pill for me to swallow; especially when Ralph said after the game that the Terps had worked on defending the run for the 10 days leading up to their showdown with the Hokies. But Evans reeled off a school record 253 yards on the ground to get Virginia Tech back to their winning ways with a 23-13 victory over the Terps. He probably could have run for even more.

12-Jin Soo Kim

I’m still not convinced he’s going to play a major role for the Terps this season; but Jin Soo Kim was fun to watch Saturday afternoon. Kim dropped 18 points in the 2nd half and 20 overall as the Terps beat exhibition foe Northwood 104-60. The Sun’s Don Markus even went as far as to compare Kim’s debut to Joe Smith’s first exhibition tilt. He made only one 3; but he took the ball to the hole and showed a fun nervous energy for a Terps team that might badly need a spark this season.

13-AC/DC’s new single “Rock N Roll Train”

I will admit that I have issues with ANYONE who charges $90 for upper deck seats; but I can only hold so much against AC/DC. This track is just another rocking hit in their lengthy career; and can get clubs, high schools, and Lions Club meetings all tapping their toes. You have to admit, it’s a fun song. If you haven’t heard it, take a listen.

14-Heisman Candidates who DON’T play for Texas Tech: Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford, Javon Ringer, and Tim Tebow

Graham Harrell admittedly has the lead through 12 holes; but there a group of players who were hitting their own eagle putts this weekend as they try to remain in the hunt.
McCoy was 26/37 for 300 yards and 5 TD’s as Texas beat Baylor to get back to 3rd in the BCS standings. Bradford was 22/33 for 320 yards and 4 TD’s as Oklahoma routed Texas A&M in College Station. Stafford was 17/27 for 376 yards and 3 TD’s as Georgia held off Kentucky. Javon Ringer rushed for 121 yards and 2 TD’s as Michigan State beat Purdue. And Tim Tebow had 259 combined yards and 5 combined TD’s as Florida crushed Vanderbilt. At least it will be an interesting race.

15-Anyone who took a date to see Role Models

You probably had to do a little bit of work to convince her to see it (I had to show the girlfriend a trailer AND beat her in Rock, Paper, Scissors to avoid a Madagascar 2 fate); but you knew that Paul Rudd would deliver. You weren’t wrong; as the movie had sex jokes, nudity, funny drug scenes, and even children cussing-the type of stuff that always makes guys laugh. But you looked like a million bucks when the movie turned out to be a bit of a chick flick; and the characters showed a softer side; allowing your date to smile. Nice choice, friend.

The Lucky 7……

1-Brad Childress

Brad Childress had NEVER defeated the Green Bay Packers in his tenure as Vikings Head Coach; and that streak very nearly continued Sunday. But when Mason Crosby was wide on his 52 yard FG attempt in the final minute; the Vikings gave Childress a 28-27 victory over the rival Cheeseheads; and got back into the NFL North division race as well.

2-Nick Saban

It would have been an empty feeling for Nick Saban had he walked out of Baton Rouge with a loss Saturday no matter what the circumstances were. But when Alabama kicker Leigh Tiffin’s line drive FG attempt was tipped away as time expired; the angry mob at LSU had to get the feeling that their Tigers were destined to end the perfect season for their former coach and his Crimson Tide. But Saban’s team came up with an INT and a John Parker Wilson TD to finish LSU in overtime; and Saban escaped the hostile environment with a victory.

3-The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays

Maryland lost. Towson lost. Morgan lost. Navy didn’t play. It was a dark weekend for College Football in the state of Maryland; but the Jays were fortunate enough to hold on for a 26-25 win at Franklin & Marshall to improve to 7-2. Franklin & Marshall trailed 26-19 with 8:55 left; but marched down the field to score a TD with 29 ticks left on the clock. The Diplomats decided to go for 2 and the win; but Hopkins’ A.J. Albert picked off the conversion try. Even after that; the Jays allowed F&M to recover an onsides kick; but were able to prevent the Diplomats from scoring before time expired. Congrats to receiver Tucker Michels, who had 8 catches for 133 yards and 2 TD’s in the win.

4-Those who have the Sports package on Comcast or their preferred TV provider

On Thursday night; many NFL fans sat down to enjoy Brady Quinn’s first NFL start, only to be reminded of the fact that the NFL Network isn’t on the TV service they pay for. That same night; college football fans across the country sat down to watch Utah battle TCU in a Top 25 College Football showdown with BCS implications; only to be reminded of the fact that CBS College Sports isn’t on the TV service they pay for. I don’t know the political aspects of these particular battles, but I do know that sports fans who pay to watch TV deserve the chance to see something better than the Maryland-Virginia Tech game. As a side note; props to NFL.com for streaming games live online; as the cable is out where I am; and I am enjoying the Giants-Eagles on my computer.

5-The Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers

The Dolphins are in the thick of the playoff race in the AFC at 5-4, but this one was a bit of a gift. The Seahawks have made their season on stinkers (2-7 means Arizona can pretty much start pouring the champagne for their first ever division title in the desert); but actually managed to stay in the game on the east coast for a change. But when Seneca Wallace’s 2 point conversion attempt fell incomplete with 2:57 to play, the Dolphins survived. The Chargers also survived a late two point conversion attempt by a bad team; as the Chiefs got a remarkable TD catch in the final minute; but Herm Edwards decided to go for the win instead of the PAT and overtime; but Tyler Thigpen was flushed out and had to lob a pass to the endzone, which was batted down and picked to give San Diego a 20-19 win. Do we have to crown a champion in the AFC West?

6-Peyton Manning

Some people will say today’s game was vintage Peyton Manning, but I will not agree. Manning completed BARELY half of his passes (21/40); and needed the assistance of 3 Ben Roethlisberger interceptions to keep his Colts in the game. The Colts aren’t dead in the AFC playoff race; but they aren’t exactly kicking either. The Ravens might want to thank the Colts for beating the Steelers to leave the Ravens tied for 1st place; but the Colts hold a tiebreaker over the Ravens, meaning the Ravens’ 1 game lead over Indy in the Wild Card race is tedious.

7-Anyone who got a parking spot at their local mall this weekend

I met the girlfriend for lunch Friday afternoon at Towson Town Center. Following 15 minutes of driving through parking lots, I finally found a spot on the 3rd level. It was November 7th. A Friday afternoon. Is the Christmas season REALLY this crazy already? I thought we were in a recession?

Absolute Zero……..

The Tennessee Volunteers

Last week Drew posed the question; “Who laid a bigger egg in DC-the Washington Redskins against the Pittsburgh Steelers; or John McCain in the electoral college?” While both parties are guilty of getting crushed; nothing can compare to the absolutely BOGUS performance given in Knoxville Saturday. Clearly unmoved by the announcement that their head coach Phil Fulmer was out at the end of the season; Tennessee welcomed the 2-6 Wyoming Cowboys to Neyland Stadium and proceeded to allow their underwhelming opponent to beat them 13-7. Maybe this job isn’t as desirable as everyone is making it out to be.

Talk to you in the morning.

Final BCS Projections

Posted on 02 December 2007 by Glenn Clark

I have to get my last one in before we know who’s playing, so here we go….

BCS National Championship Game (Jan 7, New Orleans)
Ohio State vs. LSU

Look, LSU didn’t lose a single game in regulation all season. Frankly, they did what good teams will do sometimes…..lose close games to good teams. The fact that their season included wins over Florida, Auburn, and Virginia Tech will probably be enough to get them in. PLUS, a Coaching nightmare actually could have hurt them in voting-so Les Miles may have done them a serious favor by addressing the problem yesterday.

Now, I’ve been reading up on the BCS selection process, and how LSU-Ohio State affects the selection order of the other Bowls all day. If I understand it fully, and if I know how Bowls still pull under the table deals with each other, here’s how I think everything will shake out…

FedEx Orange Bowl (Jan 3, Miami)
Virginia Tech vs. Missouri

I think Missouri will look better than Kansas, especially thanks to the fact that they beat Kansas last week. I don’t think either team provides a travel bonus, so I’ll stick with the Tigers.

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (Jan 2, Glendale)
Oklahoma vs. Arizona State

I know the Fiesta Bowl doesn’t want them, but how could they convince the Phoenix community that they did the right thing by taking a 3 loss Illinois team instead of a 2 loss ASU team? They won’t be mad if they’re forced to take someone else instead.

Allstate Sugar Bowl (Jan 1, New Orleans)
West Virginia vs. Hawaii

The Sugar Bowl COULD block the Rose Bowl from taking their home conference (SEC)’s 2nd option, but I think the Sugar Bowl would be satisfied with having the Mountaineers back on the Bayou.

Rose Bowl Presented by Citi (Jan 1, Pasadena)
USC vs. Georgia

If the Sugar Bowl blocks the Rose Bowl from taking Georgia, they’ll take Illinois, and Arizona State will be the trickle down loser in the BCS mess. Otherwise, they’ll like the historic matchup they’ll have in Georgia-USC.

Final Heisman Top 5:
Colt Brennan, Hawaii (It’s a shame no one was watching last night, as he completely won this award)
Darren McFadden, Arkansas
Tim Tebow, Florida
Chase Daniel, Missouri
Kevin Smith, Central Florida
