The Reality Check Week 9 NFL Power Rankings

Posted on 30 October 2012 by Glenn Clark

Glenn Clark’s Rankings…

32. Kansas City Chiefs (32)

They’re in primetime this week because no one in the NFL wants to help lift the spirits of hurricane victims.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (31)

They weren’t as bad as we expected them to be in Green Bay, I just don’t think they’re worthy of moving up.

30. Carolina Panthers (29)

I’ll default to PFT’s Darin Gantt for this one…

29. St. Louis Rams (24)

“We welcome the New England Patriots to London, representing the NFL. We also welcome the St. Louis Rams, representing nothing.”

28. San Diego Chargers (22)

Norv Turner has naked pictures of everyone everywhere. He must.

27. Buffalo Bills (25)

Mario Williams is optimistic about his wrist, but not about his team’s chances of winning games.

26. Tennessee Titans (23)

You take it week by week with this crew.

25. Cleveland Browns (30)

I don’t this is a “good” team welcoming Baltimore to town, but I do think they’re somehow “better.” Probably.

24. New York Jets (19)

I’ve had a gut feeling about them all along.

23. Oakland Raiders (28)

I don’t really believe it though. They beat the Jaguars and Chiefs in the last two weeks.

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27)

Well…they looked really good on Thursday night.

21. New Orleans Saints (17)

Joe Vitt’s return made a whole lot of no difference.

20. Cincinnati Bengals (20)

But they just BARELY sneaked past “bye.”

19. Arizona Cardinals (16)

They’ll be in the bottom four by the end of the season.

18. Washington Redskins (15)

Maybe the Shanahans will have Robert Griffin III line up on defense next.

17. Philadelphia Eagles (12)

But I’m sure starting Nick Foles would solve everything.

The Reality Check Week 8 NFL Power Rankings

Posted on 24 October 2012 by Glenn Clark

Glenn Clark’s Rankings…

32. Kansas City Chiefs (32)

Yuck.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (31)

Yuck again.

30. Cleveland Browns (30)

You can almost assume their game against the Ravens next week is going to be close somehow.

29. Carolina Panthers (29)

Maybe we should have seen this coming.

28. Oakland Raiders (28)

Beat a bad team. Barely. At home. After the bad team’s players got hurt.

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26)

I’m all for them staying in creamsicle though.

26. Indianapolis Colts (27)

No one would remember they’re 3-3.

25. Buffalo Bills (22)

Shawne Merriman is back! Shawne Merriman isn’t any good!

24. St. Louis Rams (23)

Lots of teams lose to the Packers.

23. Tennessee Titans (25)

Well if Chris Johnson is going to run like that…

22. San Diego Chargers (17)

Haven’t beaten anyone good, try to cheat.

21. Detroit Lions (16)

Maybe no one told them they still had Calvin Johnson this season.

20. Cincinnati Bengals (18)

Always doing very Cincinnati Bengals-y things.

19. New York Jets (20)

I give them a slight nod for keeping things close in Foxborough, but I still don’t think they’re very good.

18. Miami Dolphins (21)

Surprise, surprise.

17. New Orleans Saints (24)

I’m PROBABLY giving them too much credit, but they have Drew Brees.

The Five Plays That Determined The Game-Ravens/Texans

Posted on 23 October 2012 by Glenn Clark

Following every Baltimore Ravens game this season, Ryan Chell and I will take to the airwaves Tuesdays on “The Reality Check” on AM1570 WNST.net with a segment known as “The Five Plays That Determined The Game.”

It’s a simple concept. We’ll select five plays from each game that determined the outcome. These five plays will best represent why the Ravens won or lost each game.

This will be our final analysis of the previous game before switching gears towards the next game on the schedule.

Here are the five plays that determined the Ravens’ 43-13 loss to the Houston Texans Sunday at Reliant Stadium…

(Note: not all pictures are always of actual play)

Glenn Clark’s Plays…

5. Glover Quin intercepts Joe Flacco after Whitney Mercilus tip (2nd quarter)

4. Whitney Mercilus downs Donnie Jones punt at Ravens’ 3 yard line (1st quarter)

3. Joe Flacco pass intended for Anquan Boldin incomplete on 3rd & 5 (2nd down)

2. Connor Barwin sacks Joe Flacco in endzone for safety (1st quarter)

1. Jonathan Joseph 52 yard TD return of Joe Flacco interception after JJ Watt tip (2nd quarter)

Our Ravens/Texans “Slaps to the Head”

Our Ravens/Texans “Slaps to the Head”

Posted on 21 October 2012 by Glenn Clark

After Baltimore Ravens victories, Ryan Chell and I award players who made positive contributions with “Pats on the Ass” during the “Nasty Purple Postgame Show” on AM1570 WNST.net.

The Ravens fell to the Houston Texans 43-13 Sunday at Reliant Stadium, meaning there were no Pats to be awarded.

So instead of offering “Pats on the Ass”, Ryan and I again offered “Slaps to the Head” postgame. A slap on the side of the head from a coach tends to come along with them saying something along the lines of “you’ve gotta do better than that.”

Same rules as there were with Pats. Two offensive players, two defensive players, and a Wild Card (Special Teams player, coach, or another Offensive or Defensive player). One player gets “two slaps” (or a slap on both sides of the head), it’s the opposite of a “Player of the Game” honor.” Ryan and I select five different players/coaches after each game.

Here are our five Ravens that have “gotta do better than that.”

(NOTE: Not all photos from today, some photos courtesy of Houston Chronicle.)

Glenn Clark’s Slaps…

5. Christian Thompson

4. Terrence Cody

3. Michael Oher

2. Jimmy Smith

Suggs active and will play against Texans

Posted on 21 October 2012 by Luke Jones

After weeks of conflicting reports and sources offering different takes, the Ravens will welcome 2011 Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs back to action as they take on the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.

Considered a game-time decision after he was placed on the 53-man roster Saturday, Suggs went through pre-game workouts and coach John Harbaugh and the Ravens were satisfied with what they saw, meaning the 30-year-old will make his return in just under six months after suffering a partially-torn Achilles tendon in late April. It’s regarded as one of the quickest recoveries ever seen from such a devastating injury to an NFL player.

Suggs is expected to be limited in his level of participation Sunday as the coaching staff wants to see how he responds to contact and going full-speed after only three days of work on the practice field this week.

Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and cornerback Jimmy Smith are active and will start after being limited in practice and being listed as questionable in the final injury report of the week on Friday. However, starting nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu is inactive and will be replaced by Terrence Cody in the starting lineup. He’s been dealing with a knee injury despite declaring himself full-go on Friday following practice.

With Kemoeatu out and Ngata dealing with a sprained MCL, the Ravens have decided to activate Bryan Hall and rookie DeAngelo Tyson for the first time this season to give them extra depth along the defensive line.

For the Texans, top cornerback Johnathan Joseph is active and will start after missing two days of practice this week with a groin injury. The Ravens will definitely want to test Joseph early to see how well the groin holds up.

The 5-1 Ravens will greatly benefit from the five-time Pro Bowl linebacker’s return as they take on the 5-1 Texans in a battle between the only teams in the AFC currently holding a winning record. Baltimore owns a 5-0 all-time record in the regular season against Houston and the Ravens also earned the victory in their only postseason meeting against the Texans last January in the divisional round.

The roof will be closed at Reliant Stadium as the Texans wear their alternate red jerseys. The Ravens will go with their white jerseys and white pants Sunday afternoon.

Here are Sunday’s inactives …

BALTIMORE
CB Asa Jackson
TE Billy Bajema
OL Jah Reid
OL Ramon Harewood
NT Ma’ake Kemoeatu
WR Deonte Thompson
RB Bobby Rainey

HOUSTON
CB Roc Carmichael
SS Quintin Demps
OT Andrew Gardner
G Cody White
DE David Hunter
G Brandon Brooks
LB Barrett Ruud
