Navy LB Peterson picks up FBS Independent weekly honor

FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

BYU running back Jamaal Williams, Navy linebacker Cody Peterson and BYU placekicker Justin Sorensen have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through Saturday, Nov. 16. Williams is recognized on Offense, Peterson is cited on Defense, and Sorensen is honored on Special Teams. Williams is a first-time honoree, while Peterson’s second career honor is his also his second consecutive weekly award; Sorensen is honored for a third time this season and sixth time overall.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU RB Jamaal Williams
A sophomore from Fontana, Calif., Williams ran 13 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns in less than two full quarters of work, helping BYU to a 59-13 home win over Idaho State. Williams’ three rushing scores tied his single-game high, while his 70-yard touchdown run was a career-long effort and BYU’s longest scrimmage run of the season. He added a single reception for nine yards, as the Cougars won their home finale for an eighth straight season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Navy LB Cody Peterson
A senior from Olympia, Wash., Peterson recorded eight tackles–all of them solo stops–including a key tackle for loss, in Navy’s 42-14 home win over South Alabama. Early in the fourth quarter, with the Midshipmen holding a 27-14 lead and South Alabama facing a fourth-and-two from the Navy four-yard line, Peterson stopped the ball carrier for a two-yard loss, giving the ball back to the Mids. Navy then marched down the field and scored to put the game away. Peterson is second in the FBS in solo tackles per game, at 7.4 per contest.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU PK Justin Sorensen
A senior from South Jordan, Utah, Sorensen had a perfect day on his placement kicks, converting his lone field goal attempt (26 yards) and all eight of his PAT tries in wet, sometimes snowy conditions, as BYU defeated Idaho State 59-13 in Provo. He added touchbacks on five of his ten kickoffs. This season, Sorensen is 16-for-19 on FGs and 39-for-39 on PATs, with touchbacks on 34 of 67 kickoffs.

Navy QB Reynolds, LB Peterson pick up weekly Independent honors

Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds, Navy linebacker Cody Peterson and New Mexico State punter Cayle Chapman-Brown have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through Saturday, Nov. 9. Reynolds is cited on Offense, Peterson is recognized on Defense, and Chapman-Brown is honored on Special Teams. Reynolds’ second award this season is the third of his career, while Peterson and Chapman-Brown are first-time honorees.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Navy QB Keenan Reynolds
A sophomore from Antioch, Tenn., Reynolds rushed 28 times for a career-high 226 yards and a career-best four touchdowns, while completing four of his eight passes for 59 yards and a score, in Navy’s 42-28 home-field victory over Hawai’i. Reynolds’ 226 rushing yards are the third most by a Navy quarterback, and the most by a Midshipmen signal-caller since 1997; his four rushing touchdowns are tied for the third-most in school history. With 18 rushing scores on the season, Reynolds ranks second nationally among FBS players, and third on Navy’s all-time single-season tally.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Navy LB Cody Peterson
A senior from Olympia, Wash., Peterson tied his career high with 14 tackles, including eight solo stops, in Navy’s 42-28 win over Hawai’i at Annapolis, Md. Peterson has recorded double-digit tackle totals in six consecutive games, and nine times in his Navy career. He currently ranks second nationally in FBS solo tackles per game, at 7.3 per contest.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

New Mexico State P Cayle Chapman-Brown
A senior from Sydney, Australia, Chapman-Brown punted seven times for a 51.9-yard average, with a long kick of 58 yards, in New Mexico State’s 48-34 home loss to Boston College. Four of Chapman-Brown’s punts were downed inside the BC 20-yard line, with three of his kicks pinning the Eagles inside their 15-yard line.

Navy KR Thomas named Independent Player of the Week

FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

Notre Dame running back Tarean Folston, Notre Dame defensive lineman Kona Schwenke and Navy kick returner Marcus Thomas have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through Saturday, Nov. 2.  Folston is cited on Offense, Schwenke is honored on Defense, and Thomas is recognized on Special Teams.  All three players are first-time honorees.

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Notre Dame RB Tarean Folston

A freshman from Cocoa, Fla., Folston ran for a career-best 140 yards and the game-winning touchdown—the first score of his career—in Notre Dame’s 38-34 home win over Navy.  Folston became the first Irish freshman running back to eclipse 100 yards since Robert Hughes against Stanford in 2007; he rushed for the most yards by an Irish freshman running back since Julius Jones ran for 146 yards v. Navy in 1999.  Folston ended the day just eight yards shy of the Notre Dame freshman rushing record held by Jerome Heavens, who ran for 148 yards against Georgia Tech in 1975.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Notre Dame DL Kona Schwenke

A senior from Hauula, Hawaii, Schwenke filled in for an injured Louis Nix III and collected a career-best 11 tackles, including 10 in the first half, in Notre Dame’s 38-34 victory over Navy.  Schwenke, who ended up having to leave the game with a second half-injury, had recorded a total of 15 tackles over his first 27 career games before emerging against the Midshipmen and their productive option attack.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Navy KR Marcus Thomas

A senior from Baton Rouge, La., Thomas returned five kickoffs for 137 yards (27.4 yard average) in a 38-34 loss at Notre Dame.  Thomas’ last return was a 49-yard run-back to midfield which positioned the Midshipmen for their final drive with 3:47 to play.  Thomas ended the day with 162 all-purpose yards, as he also caught two passes for 25 yards.

Navy K Sloan named FBS Independent Player of the Week

FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

BYU quarterback Taysom Hill, BYU linebacker Uani ‘Unga and Navy placekicker Nick Sloan have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through Saturday, Oct. 26.  Hill is the honoree on Offense, ‘Unga is cited on Defense, and Sloan is the award recipient on Special Teams.  Hill’s honor is his second consecutive, third this season and fourth of his career, while Sloan is recognized for a first time this season and second time overall.  ‘Unga is an honoree for the first time in his career.

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU QB Taysom Hill

A sophomore from Pocatello, Idaho, Hill accounted for 408 yards of total offense in pacing BYU to a 37-20 home win over Boise State—a victory that snapped the Broncos’ 50-game October win streak.  Hill completed 27 of 41 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions; he also carried the ball 18 times for 69 yards and one touchdown.  Hill is currently the only FBS quarterback with 600-plus yards rushing (841) and 2,000-plus yards passing (2,019) on the season.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU LB Uani ‘Unga

A senior from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., ‘Unga recorded a team-high 15 tackles, including five solo stops, in the Cougars’ 37-20 win against Boise State.  His stat line also featured a forced fumble, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. The Boise State game was ‘Unga’s fifth this season with a double-digit tackle tally; he is ranked 15th nationally among FBS players, averaging 10.4 tackles per game.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Navy PK Nick Sloan

A sophomore from San Diego, Calif., Sloan calmly drilled a 30-yard field goal as time expired to give the Midshipmen a 24-21 upset win over Pittsburgh in Annapolis, Md.  Sloan was also 3-for-3 on extra-point attempts. The win was Navy’s 21st over a team representing a BCS conference since 2003, the most in the country by a non-BCS school.

The FBS Independent Players of the Week are selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions’ coverage markets.
