Cano, Jones, Puig, Pujols to participate in All-star Series 2014

Texas Rangers Manager Ron Washington to Lead MLB All-Star Squad; Tickets for Five-Game Series Available on September 13th

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association jointly announced today that MLB All-Stars Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners, Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles, Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Albert Pujols of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will be among the group of accomplished Major Leaguers who will travel to Japan this November to play a five-game series against “Samurai Japan” (Japan’s National Team) in “All-Star Series 2014.” The MLB All-Stars will be led by Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington, who led the Rangers to back-to-back American League pennants in 2010 and 2011.

The 2014 renewal of the event will mark the 11th All-Star Series and the 36th time overall that a team of Major Leaguers has toured Japan for exhibition games, dating back to 1908. The current five-game format was first played in 2006, which was the last time the MLB All-Stars faced off against the Japan All-Stars. MLB’s 2006 roster – which included All-Stars such as Bronson Arroyo, Ryan Howard, John Lackey, Joe Mauer, Joe Nathan, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Chase Utley – went 5-0 in the All-Star Series.

All-Star Series games will be hosted in Osaka (Kyocera Dome), Tokyo (Tokyo Dome) and Sapporo (Sapporo Dome). Two exhibition games will complement the five-game series, with one game in Osaka (Koshien Stadium) and the other in Okinawa (Okinawa Cellular Stadium).

Tickets for All-Star Series 2014 will be available at http://l-tike.com/mlbjp/ beginning at 10:00 a.m. (Japanese time) on Saturday, September 13th.

UMBC lacrosse grabs two wins early in tour of Japan

Posted on 03 June 2013 by WNST Staff

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team is midway through its journey in Japan, and in addition to the reports of the team enjoying a fascinating cultural experience, the squad has demonstrated some outstanding lacrosse in victories over the U-22 Japanese national team and the Japan National Squad.

The team arrived on May 30, and, became fully engaged on June 1, when they put on a clinic for Japanese freshmen players in the morning and then took on a determined U-22 Japanese national team in the afternoon. UMBC jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter, but the hosts used a 5-0 third quarter run to knot the affair at 8-8. But the Retrievers outscored their friendly rivals, 4-2, in the final quarter to prevail, 12-10.

Nine UMBC players scored goals in the game, led by two goals apiece by rising junior Ty Kashur (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson/CCBC-Essex), and rising sophomores Pat Young (Ewing, N.J./Christchurch (Va.) School) and Drew Borsody (Laytonsville, Md./Seneca Valley).

A day later, on June 2, the Retrievers put on an impressive defensive display in a 10-4 triumph over the national squad. UMBC led, 4-1, at halftime and 8-2 after three quarters en route to the victory. Attackman Matt Gregoire (Crofton, Md./South River) scored three goals and was named UMBC’s Most Valuable Player of the Game. Rising sophomore attackman Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) added three goals and rising senior David Campbell (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added a pair of scores.

UMBC will compete against Tokyo, Waseda and Hitotsubeshi Universities on June 4 before returning home on June 7.
