Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 31 October 2008 by Glenn Clark

Here are my picks for this weekend………..Browns 24, Ravens 13

And it wouldn’t surprise me if the Browns actually opened it up a bit. This secondary is in TROUBLE without C-Mac; and we will learn that Sunday. Flacco may have won at Miami; but that might as well have been a home game. This will be a REAL test.

William & Mary 31, Towson 17

If this was a road game; then sadly again I would have to pick a more lopsided score. I’m being favorable to Towson here since the game is at home.

Navy 30, Temple 20

Nice to have the Owls come to town when you’re trying to clinch bowl eligibility.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say……

AFC after 3 pre-season games Fantasy notes

Posted on 27 August 2008 by KZ

After three weeks of the pre-season….AFC Fantasy Football notes:

Buffalo Bills: Edwards beats out Losman! Is this the year the Bills take a step forward? Team still needs to find a TE. Lanston Walker injury could create issues.

Man of the Year: If it’s anyone besides Marshawn Lynch, this team is in a heap of trouble.

Bust of the Year: Josh Reed, the bills drafted James Hardy to finally take some pressure off Lee Evans.

Sleeper: Trent Edwards…teams will try and stop the run, which will give Edwards lots of opportunities to open things up.

Miami Dolphins: New coach…check….new QB…new General Manger…lots of things are new in Miami.

Man of the Year: Chad Pennington has a chance to make a huge difference.

Bust of the Year: Ricky Williams…can’t handle a full load…be careful in drafting him.

Sleeper: Ted Gin Jr…has the speed and moves to be a dynamic WR…but can he handle the pounding on his smallish frame.

New England Patriots: 18 and 1…does that 1 linger or is it a rallying point? Have teams figured out how to slow down Brady and Moss, like was done in the playoffs?

Man of the Year: Laurence Maroney will have to play a larger role in the offense this year.

Bust of the Year: Brady and Moss…both will be top 10 in their respective positions but just do not expect record setting years…I’d guess 35 to 40 TD’s for Brady and 15 TD’s for Moss.

Sleeper: I keep waiting for Ben Watson to have a breakout year…I think this is it.

New York Jets: It was actually a ho-hum camp for the Jets. Nothing really happened…well until a hall of fame to be QB came along and pushed expectations through the roof.

Man of the Year: How many wins is Brett Farve worth? I’d say to the Jets 4…so 8 – 8 would be a true miracle.

Bust of the Year: Brett Farve…yes he is the man also, but this is not Green Bay…28 TD’s would amaze me. He is still the gun slinger, so 24 TD’s and 20 INT’s is a possibility.

Sleeper: Jesse Chatman…with T. Jones now 30 and injury to him would open the door for a pretty decent Chatman.

Denver Broncos: Shanny’s back, back again, Shanny’s back, tell a friend. Everyone’s favorite Fantasy coach is back again to torment us all.

Man of the Year: Jay Cutler will be a top 8 QB this year.

Bust of the year: Selvin Young…3 or 4 RB’s will start for Denver this year…and usually the first guy up is the last guy in total yards.

Sleeper: Andre Hall and Anthony Alridge…they will start at some point this year…worth a flyer.

Kansas City Chiefs: Something tells me this team may be Fantasy friendly this year…Croyle starts at QB, LJ is back and healthy, Gonzo is well Gonzo…what’s not to like? Revamped OLINE! Dwayne Bowe is a legit WR…oh now I see it…Davard Darling is the other WR and Herm Edwards is still the coach.

Man of the year: It does not seem to matter who the QB is Tony Gonzales gets his catches, but will TD’s be a problem this year?

Bust of the Year: With Croyle at QB, LARRY JOHNSON, healthy or not, is going to see a lot of 8 and 9 man fronts.

Sleeper: Jackie Battle…he is a big 6’3, 238 bruising back who can get into the hole quickly…If LJ goes down…keep an eye on him.

Oakland Raiders: This is a young team with a ton of untapped talent on the offensive side of the ball and a defense that is better than people think.

Man of the Year: JaMarcus Russell is essentially a rookie but the Raiders will go as far as he can take them.

Bust of the Year: Darren Mcfadden is not Adrian Peterson, he simply is not.

Sleeper: Ronald Curry could have 70 catches and 8 TD’s this year.

San Diego Chargers: Injured players return to lead the Bolts! Rivers, Gates and LT all back after disappointing end to 2007.

Man of the Year: LT is still the best player in the NFL

Bust of the Year: Vincent Jackson has untapped potential at WR…it remains untapped.

Sleeper: Legedu Naanee I can see him replacing Jackson in the lineup by mid-season.

Baltimore Ravens: A pre-season that leaves the team with more questions than answers. Who is the QB, RB, CB, TE…and so on and so forth.

Man of the Year: JOE FLACCO will be the starter by week 5 at the latest.

Bust of the Year: Willis McGahee…I said early on something worried me about him.

Sleeper: Yamon Figures will have a huge impact in the return game and will be given a shot at WR.

Cincinnati Bengals: Rudi is not ready, Chad is hurting and did I read that Chris Henry was resigned? WOW!

Man of the Year: Carson Palmer is a top 5 QB. He will have to throw a lot with the RB situation unsettled.

Bust of the Year: Chad Johnson is hurting…and it’s not going to get better.

Sleeper: Jerome Simpson WR…with Johnson and TJ banged up Simpson should get a chance this season and I think he is special.

Cleveland Browns: Huge expectations for the Browns this year. Can Anderson duplicate the first 10 games from 2007 for an entire year? Can Jamal continue his revival?

Man of the Year: Braylon Edwards is a top 5 WR and getting better!

Bust of the Year: Derek Anderson is being drafted like a top 6 QB, he will be lucky to be a top 12 guy.

Sleeper: Brady Quinn will start at some point this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Why is this team being overlooked again this year? Best balance of any team in the division.

Man of the Year: Ben Roethlisberger…did you know Big Ben threw 32 TD’s last year? Well, he throws 35 this year.

Bust of the Year: Rashard Mendenhall is going to be a solid if not great NFL RB, but just not this year…Willie Parker is still the man in Pittsburgh.

Sleeper: Limas Sweed..Ben wanted a big receiver and he got a really good one.

Houston Texans: Can they find a RB? Can Andre Johnson stay healthy, can the defense continue to improve.

Man of the Year: Andre Johnson will lead the league in receptions and yards if he plays 16 games this year.

Bust of the Year: Kevin Walter is currently number two on the depth chart, he finishes 4th.

Sleeper: Jacoby Jones for the second year in a row…

Indianapolis Colts: The only question is…Manning’s knee and how healthy will it be. Jeff Saturday the leader of the OLINE may be out a long period of time as well.

Man of the Year: Joseph Addai has to be the man and take pressure of Manning early in the season.

Bust of the Year: Anthony Gonzales has lots of potential but a healthy Marvin Harrison will curtail his production this year.

Sleeper: Roy Hall…if Harrison get hurt this year..Hall will get some time.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Can they finally win the division? They appear to have all the pieces in place.

Man of the Year: David Garrard has to continue to be efficient and effective in 2008.

Bust of the Year: Troy Williamson is simply not that good.

Sleeper: Matt Jones had a great camp…and has earned his chance to play.

Tennessee Titans: Can Vince Young reduce the turnovers? That is the question for this team. They have a solid defense a good running game, but need VY to take care of the ball better…9 -17 TD to INT ratio will not get it done.

Man of the Year: Vince Young…it is his team and he has to be a better on field leader.

Bust of the Year: LenDale White? I think he will have a good year, but all this Chris Johnson talk has me worried a bit.

Sleeper: Justin McCariens has the size and speed to be exactly what VY needs.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 13 August 2008 by Glenn Clark

Brian Cazeneuve has it right. As of this moment, we REALLY have to consider whether or not Michael Phelps is the greatest/most dominant athlete in the world.

I am going to take a pass on questioning the world records; as EVERYONE ELSE in swimming is also breaking records. Former swimmers are saying that there is no reason to be suspect. Every swimmer is competing on a level playing field. I’m not going to question it; I don’t think there is anything to question.

What I WILL question is whether or not Michael Phelps will return to Baltimore and become an ambassador not only for the sport of swimming, but for the city. The story of Phelps receiving an autographed Ravens jersey and having it mean more to him than his gold medal is one that touches all of us; but good feelings aren’t enough. It was Peter Parker’s great uncle Ben who said “With great power comes great responsibility.” Michael Phelps returns to Baltimore as arguably the greatest athlete in the world; and the question now is whether or not he will show the maturity and responsibility necessary to truly represent the title here in Charm City.

Michael Phelps’ focus leading up to an event is incredible. Maybe the IPod is the most significant invention in sports preparation, as Michael seems to be unflappable as he gets ready. I was forced to sit through the women’s gymnastics as I was waiting for his second race; and it was incredible to see the difference in watching the athletes prepare. Michael remains totally unfazed right up until the moment he hits the pool; whereas the gymnasts appear almost as though they are going to faint right up until they reach the moment. It is truly unreal to compare.

I have to admit, I didn’t even realize how much I would be caught up in this. Michael Phelps truly is the most significant athlete in Baltimore. He’s in the argument as the most significant athlete in Baltimore history. We’re all watching. We’re all captivated. We’re all talking about it. If he’s racing against the Ravens game Saturday night; I genuinely might stay home to watch.

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-I have to disagree with Rick Maese regarding Katie Hoff. Without a gold medal, the 2008 Olympics WILL be a disappointment for Katie Hoff; as I know her expectations were to win gold in Beijing. That being said, she still has her chances.

-I REALLY like the Lorenzo Neal acquisition. I think it shows that the Ravens are concerned about their RB’s getting beat up; and they want to do something to address the problem. 37 year old Lorenzo Neal might not be as good as 32 year old Lorenzo Neal; but he MIGHT be as good as 32 year old Sam Gash. That’s better than Justin Green or Le’Ron McClain. It doesn’t make this a 10 win team though.

-Why wait to make the Hayden Penn move? Do you really want to see Dennis Sarfate again?

-Brian Matusz should take whatever the Orioles offer. I actually won’t be that angry if for some reason the Birds don’t get the job done. If his slotted value is $5 million; he should get it. If it isn’t, he should stop making demands.

-Speedy recoveries to Travis Ivey and Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku Enhada.

-Get out to UMBC and root on Crystal Palace in the playoffs tonight.

Crabs and Beer will be off the next two days; as I will be hosting the Comcast Morning Show with Thyrl Nelson. Make sure you tune in! Talk to you then, and talk to you on here Monday!

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 07 August 2008 by Glenn Clark

There are a NUMBER of things I am hoping to see tonight. The most important thing about tonight’s game in my mind is how the secondary will perform. I think the difference between this being a downright TERRIBLE football team and this being a potentially decent football team lies in the secondary. Fabian Washington is the biggest difference. If the Patriots go down and score on their first three drives; I actually do think it will be fair to be concerned. Chris McAlister could miss more games. Samari Rolle really can’t be fairly expected to do anything this season.

This team NEEDS to be able to defend long passes. This team CANNOT make beating them as simple as throwing the ball-as many teams discovered last year. Someone HAS to be able to defend the pass. This IS the type of thing that we can start to determine in the preseason. If they can’t defend the pass; it won’t matter who is playing QB.

I’ll say Patriots 27, Ravens 13. None of the QB’s will look particularly effective.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Don’t panic with Garrett Olson. He’s shown enough to earn the spot. But I really think the next few weeks could be a bit brutal for this Orioles team. Guys could really start showing a lack of interest.

-I was asked yesterday who it was that I wanted to win the Maryland QB competition. I said “Jordan Steffy is GOING to win it; but I would love to see Josh Portis.” Portis brings the most to the table athletically; and would be the most dynamic of the group……IF he knows the offense. What happened yesterday at practice can’t help but excite me.

-Drew’s theory on MAGNA inflating their losses is not unfounded, but we all know there are issues with the horse racing industry in this state. Whether they lost $4.4 million during Preakness or not; we still know there are major problems.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 06 August 2008 by Glenn Clark

In the end, Kyle Boller HAD to be named the starter Thursday. As I’ve said before, he should have been named before now. Had John Harbaugh NOT named Boller the starter; he might as well have eliminated him from the race to be starting QB. Boller is the guy who has been here; and deserves the right to be “first man up.” However, Boller also needs to be okay with the fact that he will NOT start the next game. This IS still very much a QB competition; or as I refer to it…….”The Long Road to Flacco”.

When Drew Forrester says that people in the organization are saying Flacco is still in the picture; I am still not surprised. As I said before all of this started, everyone in the organization has had or will have to look at each other at some point this month and say “You know, Flacco is the one who looks the most like a real QB.” We all know Flacco is going to be the QB this year. It is merely a question of when they pull the trigger.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

HORSE RACING:

The Sun’s Sandra McKee says MTHA won’t fund 6 Fall stakes anymore; closing Pimlico barn

The Sun’s Gadi Dechter says slots revenue could leave state

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Look, other first time starters have impressed for the Orioles before. Chris is not reaching uncharted “Waters”. (I worked on that all night). I DO think he has earned another couple starts at this level, from which they can decide if they want to invite him to big league camp. Hayden Penn should get Dennis Sarfate’s spot.

-The Orioles should NOT bring back Adam Jones if there is even a question moving forward. We saw what we needed to see from him this season. We KNOW he’s going to be special. Hopefully keeping Jay Payton in the lineup might garner some trade value before Aug. 31. Lou Montanez deserves the opportunity at the Major League level as well; as you just never know.

-If the Orioles HAVE made a decision on Dave Trembley’s future, I cannot fathom why they would wait to make the announcement. Hopefully Trembley already knows.

-The news reported by Sandra McKee this morning is staggering. Joan Moag told Drew a few weeks back that he believes horse racing needs to do a better job of presenting the product. Whatever the problem is; it is frightening to imagine how close we are to horse racing being a total afterthought in this state.

-I think what Ralph is seeing in his depth in College Park-from guys like Torrey Smith, Bruce Campbell, and Davin Meggett is a definite example of why this Maryland team will be better than expected.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Ravens Camp 7/30/08

Posted on 30 July 2008 by caseywillett

5:40

John Welbourne has left the Ravens team hotel and his headed home. John was not very happy when he walked out of the team hotel and seemed upset with the Ravens for the whole situation.

So you can scratch him off your list as potential offensive tackles.

4:00

So as the Ravens continue to search for depth on the offensive line, it looks as though they could be close to adding John Welbourne to the mix. John was a drafted in the 199 draft in the 4th round by the Philadelphia Eaglers.

Here is an interesting story from Jay Glazer’s blog back in August of 2007. Scroll down to the Worst place on my trip so far. It is a pretty interesting story and something I am sure will be brought up.

John has been in the lobby for about 3 hours and is reading Scar Tissue by Anthony Keids of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Chad Slaughter is still here at the facility and may be joining the Ravens also.

12:30

Chad Slaughter formerly of the Oakland Raiders was here this afternoon for a workout. More news as it comes out, but here is info on Chad.

12:10

Today was a good day to be over the age of 30 if you play for the Ravens. Today was a day off for the over 30 club, except for a couple of members like Gary Stills, and Matt Stover.

Here are some other notes from the morning session:

-          Coach Harbaugh, Coach Cameron, and other members of the coaching staff all ran down on the kickoff team coverage towards the end of practice this morning

-          Willis McGahee had his left knee wrapped heavily in ice towards the later parts of practice this morning

-          Ray Rice continues to impress with every time he touches the football
-          The quarterback situation still has no clear cut winner in my opinion

-          Dan Cody, Adam Terry, Jared Gaither, Haloti Ngata, and Edgar Jones all missed practice this morning while nursing injuries

-          Coach Harbaugh acknowledged that the team is currently in the process of adding a player or two to the roster. This is likely to be at the tacle position.

-          Coach Harbaugh said that Ed Reed has missed practice due to dealing with a strength issue in his shoulder. Ed has been on the field running and catching passes almost on a daily basis while at camp. He has not taken part in any drills with the team.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 22 July 2008 by Glenn Clark

It felt good to have football back……for one day anyway. Seeing Joe Flacco answer questions right; knowing that the injured vets were reporting and excited to get healthy; listening to John Harbaugh talk; it all made for an exciting Day 1 of football season.

But the next few weeks might not be quite as exciting.

There is a QB controversy; and it’s not for good reason. No one on the roster is a legitimate NFL QB…..yet. We hope they find one.

Terrell Suggs might want to be in Camp; but he won’t be for a while. It’s not a good sign for a player whose future in this town is in question.

Ray Lewis wants a contract that the Ravens shouldn’t even THINK about giving him. The idea of 52 playing as the franchise player next year seems crazy; but it could happen.

This O-Line is a MAJOR question mark. Will Gaither, Yanda, Grubbs, Brown, etc. prove to be the types of talent we were praying they would be?

There isn’t much depth at WR or TE. Someone has to catch passes.

The secondary MIGHT be better. MIGHT.

John Harbaugh has never even been a Coordinator; more or less a Head Coach. Do we REALLY know he’s ready? Rex Ryan expected to be a Head Coach this season; Cam Cameron was a Head Coach just a season ago.

And two of the stalwarts in the Ravens’ greatest era of football-Jonathan Ogden and Brian Billick-won’t be there.

But yesterday WAS exciting. It’s good to have football back.

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Here’s the skinny on Jim Palmer vs. Ray Lewis today. Palmer of course played 20 seasons in Baltimore; winning 3 Cy Young awards and 3 World Series titles. He was a 6 time All-Star and won 4 Gold Glove awards. His number 22 is retired by the Orioles; and he was elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1990. Ray Lewis is entering his 13th season in Baltimore; he has made 9 Pro Bowls and has been a 7 time All-Pro (6 times on the 1st team, once on the 2nd team). He is a 2 time AP Defensive Player of the Year; and he was the MVP of his lone Super Bowl title (XXXV). Three World Series titles mean my vote goes to Palmer.

-Kudos to the Ravens for getting all of the Draft picks signed. It is good to know everyone will be practicing today.

-When I first read Bob Haynie’s statement about Adam Jones; I was taken back. But he’s absolutely right. I might even go a step farther. Adam Jones might also be the most important player in Orioles history.

Take a step back.

Jones is going to be GREAT. He’s going to be absolutely magnificent for years to come. He is the real deal. (As Bob said, barring injury.) More importantly; Adam Jones has the personality to be a marketable figure for the Baltimore Orioles in what we are HOPING will be a great rebuilding process leading to a genuine turnaround. He can be the absolute CENTERPIECE or everything the Orioles do over the next few years. If this rebuilding works; Adam Jones will be the fulcrum. Adam Jones will be the piece that carries it. He will be the star. Markakis might be a better player; but he doesn’t have Jones’ personality. Jones is CRUCIAL to the next 5-10 years of Orioles baseball.

-Voters are right to pick Maryland football 5th in their division. They have no reason to expect anything more…..yet. But if Ralph keeps his guys at least a bit healthier than last year; they have the kind of depth (especially on the O-Line, at LB, and at WR); and the home run talent (DHB, Da’Rel Scott, etc.) to be VERY surprising. But they still have to find a QB.

Talk to you tomorrow.

-G

Pre game notes

Posted on 02 July 2008 by caseywillett

Here are some notes from Dave Trembley:

-          The Orioles have not heard from Dr James Andrews in regards to Matt Albers as of this afternoon. They are expecting to hear from him later today.

-          Kevin Millar is getting the night off so that Jay Payton can get into play. Trembley pointed out that Millar’s 1-24 .042 career average against Meche is not the deciding factor, but is considered when he is making decisions. Millar has only struck out once versus Meche, and his only hit was in his first at bat against Meche back on 8-25-2003. Millar singled to center and was thrown out going into second.

-          Adam Loewen will not be available for the Orioles tonight. Trembley said that Loewen will pitch back to back nights, but not after his first outing out of the bullpen. The original plan was for Adam to stay in the minors till the All –Star break, but he was progressing fast and with Jamie Walker going on the disabled list, there was a need for him.

-          Ramon Hernandez is batting cleanup for the Orioles tonight and the reason is because Trembley says he did not want four left handed hitters batting in a row: Roberts, Markakis, Huff, then Ramon, followed by Scott. In case you were wondering, Ramon is 8-26 lifestime versus Meche.

-          I asked Dave Trembley if he sees any similarities between the Royals and Orioles and what they are doing, and he said yes and added the Pirates in that equation also. Dave said he knows Royals manager Trey Hillman very well and what the Royals are trying to do is similar to what the Orioles are doing here.
