Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 28 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday!

It’s a Happy Monday for me because after a weekend in Ocean City, I spent the evening literally BATHING in aloe vera. I’m not kidding, I think I looked like Justin Bartha in “The Hangover”…

justinbartha

The thing is, it doesn’t hurt until you’re sober.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Miguel Tejada singled home winning run to lift O’s to sweep of Nationals

I didn’t think it was possible.

I especially didn’t think it was possible after Julio Lugo doubled with one out in the 8th and then proceded to get picked off 2nd base by Wil Nieves.

Shows what I know.

I’m well aware that it was the Nats, but it’s still a sweep. Around here, that’s almost as good as winning the World Series.

It’s been particularly nice to see the Birds put together some rallies and come back from early deficits in these games-but it would be nicer to see starting pitchers be a bit more effective. We’ll get back to that.

2. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of sweep

Jeremy Guthrie wasn’t bad yesterday. 6 innings, 3 earned runs on 3 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. He certainly wasn’t GREAT, but he wasn’t bad. Compared to some of the other starting efforts we’ve seen at Camden Yards recently, it was really good.

Only Tejada had two hits amongst Orioles players yesterday, but that’s all that was needed. Maybe these guys are hitting better because Nick Markakis called them out publicly. Maybe they’re hitting better because they know the July 31 trade deadline is coming up and this is their chance to get out of Charm City.

I don’t really care why they’re hitting better. I just want them to keep doing it.

3. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Buck Showalter told ESPN Orioles have ‘some great pieces’

Yeah…like Markakis…and….ummm….Adam Jones for a week?

Clearly having watched the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks win World Series titles AFTER he left has made Showalter badly want another MLB gig. Of course, if he thinks he’s going to reach that level under Peter Angelos, he’ll probably be disappointed.

You know who DOES have some great pieces? Zaira Nara. (Thanks Guyism/Remix Magazine!)

zaira

4. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Andy MacPhail finally cut ties, DFA’ed Garrett Atkins

I’m trying to figure out the right way to say this. Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts were here before MacPhail got here. Adam Jones has been marginally successful. Matt Wieters, Brian Matusz and Jake Arrieta all look like they’re talented but haven’t necessarily shown it yet.

As far as a “face” of the MacPhail era is concerned, umm….Atkins is about as good a choice as any.

This was a failure from Day 1. It represented the fact that the team decided to sign a lesser player instead of going out and actually signing a real impact player. That’s the real impact of the MacPhail era.

Maybe the marketing folks at the Warehouse should put together a “Mt. Rushmore”-type photo of Atkins, Rich Hill, Adam Eaton and Koji Uehara (who returned with the Atkins DFA). Could be a hot seller this Christmas. If I was better at Photoshop, I’d do it for them.

5. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Felix Pie 2-4 with RBI, two runs for Frederick Keys on farm

Me, I’d put Felix Pie on the “Mt. Rushmore”, but someone would try to convince me that his 8 hits earlier this season mean he’s a good player. If Jake Fox was an offseason acquisition, he’d make it for sure. In the meantime, a few more things before we move on from the Orioles…

-Congratulations to our “Apologist of the Morning”, as selected by “The Great Arbitrator” Drew Forrester. “Heath” from Dempsey’s Army is no stranger to the AOTM-but this morning he received the award for citing Fangraphs in opining that Juan Samuel was wrong for trying to have Matt Wieters bunt last week. I don’t often credit Drew for being funny, but labeling a group of people as “Fangraph-sexuals” was pretty damn humorous.

-The Orioles are off today, but return to action tomorrow night opening a 3 game series against the Oakland Athletics at OPACY. Matusz, Kevin Millwood and Arrieta take the hill for the Orioles; Dallas Braden, Ben Sheets and Trevor Cahill go for the A’s.

-Thanks to Joe Sheehan from Baseball Prospectus for joining us this morning on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST to talk some baseball. If you missed it, head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault today to check it out. Other guests this morning were SI’s Jon Wertheim (live from Wimbledon) and UMBC soccer coach Pete Caringi (who went around the World Cup). It’s all up in the Audio Vault.

6. National Football Post’s Matt Bowen says Ravens without Ed Reed would be like Pittsburgh Steelers without Polamalu

As a commenter eloquently scribed after Bowen’s piece (why do all of the good commenters post at NFP?), the Ed Reed situation really IS the “elephant in the room.”

If the Ravens are going to be Super Bowl contenders (and I believe they will be), it is hard to imagine them doing it with Dawan Landry and Ken Hamlin at safety. They need Reed to be some sort of difference maker in the secondary.

My assumption remains that Ed does intend to come back, and will sit out the majority of Training Camp-part for health reasons and part because he probably doesn’t have that much interest in spending his August sweating it out in Westminster.

We know Ed WANTS to return. It SEEMS like he’ll be healthy enough to return. Now we just need to keep our fingers crossed that he IS.

7. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says new LB coaches Dean Pees, Ted Monachino making impact in offseason

Maybe so, but even the Arizona State connection couldn’t help Monachino get Terrell Suggs to Owings Mills this offseason.

You know who’s REALLY made an impact this offseason? Wendy Braga. (Thanks Don Chavez/Busted Coverage!)

wendy

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens has Maryland 68th in offseason college football rankings

Boy.

I have had a bad feeling about this Terrapins club since the end of last season.

I know that luck played a role in 2-10 last season. I know that they lost close games throughout the season, and certainly had a chance to beat the likes of Middle Tennessee State, Rutgers, Virginia, Duke, etc. That being said, they still have a real lack of talent at crucial spots (namely O-Line and D-Line), and Jamarr Robinson is unproven at best under center.

There is talent on this team. A team with as many decent running backs (Da’Rel Scott, Davin Meggett, Caleb Porzel, D.J. Adams, Gary Douglas) and WR’s (Torrey Smith, Emani Lee-Odai, Tony Logan, Quintin McCree, LaQuan Williams, Ronnie Tyler, Adrian Cannon, Kevin Dorsey, Kerry Boykins) as Maryland does, they should really be better offensively.

If this IS Ralph Friedgen’s last season in College Park-it COULD be a long one.

9. Testudo Times’ Ben Broman says Eric Hayes will join Washington Wizards’ Summer League roster, Landon Milbourne joins Atlanta Hawks’ Summer League roster

And as I passed along yesterday via Twitter (follow us @WNST), Morgan State’s Reggie Holmes will join Greivis Vasquez with the Memphis Grizzlies’ Summer League team in Las Vegas. I should also know about Jermaine Dixon (who graduated at Pitt but is from Baltimore and is the younger brother of Juan Dixon) and his NBA future later today.

I will obviously be rooting for all of these guys this summer, but understand it will be a longshot for any of them to end up on a roster (other than Vasquez of course). The one thing that could help Hayes or Holmes is if their respective squads just simply want a player who can come off the bench and provide deadly accuracy from beyond the arc. I don’t know how those guys would do defending NBA guards, but I certainly know they can shoot against anyone.

And geez-the ‘Zards have Quinton Ross and James Singleton on their roster. You mean to tell me Eric Hayes isn’t better than THEM?

10. The AP’s Samuel Petrequin says Michael Phelps received ‘wakeup call’ at Paris Open meet

I’d personally prefer my own wake-up call in France to come from Emanuelle Chriqui from “Entourage” (Thanks Barstool Sports!)…

chriqui

And finally, I leave you with this.

I know that Team USA’s loss to Ghana in South Africa really limits the excitement fans have about soccer; but I’ll pass along these YouTube clips anyway for the 4 or 5 of you who haven’t already seen them.

Here’s the epic “world reaction” to Landon Donovan’s goal against Algeria. ABC used it in the setup for the Ghana match…

Now here’s Andres Cantor calling the Donovan goal…

Is the awesome Andres Cantor GEICO commercial available on YouTube yet? I could really use it.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 April 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because a Washington sports team suffered an unthinkably bad loss last night! Woo hoo!!!

(Edit from GMC: I’ve tried to hold back my disdain for the Washington Capitals for a few weeks. I can’t do it anymore. Screw them, and screw all of the people in DC who root for them. They’re the same people who root for the Redskins. I HATE the Redskins. And those insufferable fans down there, who TRULY believe they are real, authentic sports fans and deserve something from their pathetic, worthless sports franchises.)

There’s nothing that pleases me more than knowing that this old woman is probably crying again this morning…

sadskins

She might want to keep those Kleenex nearby when Donovan McNabb gets hurt in Week 3. (Edit from GMC: I just knocked on wood out of fear that Joe Flacco might get hurt. PLEASE don’t get hurt Joe.)

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Sabathia stymied Orioles in 8-3 Yankees win

Watching CC Sabathia pitch last night, I had a couple of thoughts:

1-Boy would it be nice to be able to root for a guy like this on MY team

2-He looks like a skinny Ray Bachman!

CC gave the Yankees just about what they paid for last night. He’s not always going to be perfect, but he’s going to win a lot more than he’s going to lose. He gave up more hits than I would have expected, but he was effective after he gave up hits. Not perfect, but damn good.

Jeremy Guthrie? Well, I didn’t like the Jeremy Guthrie I saw last night. He’s pitched well for the better part of the season. I hope we see more of that.

I also hope we see more of this…

tracymorgan

As Tracy Morgan is the best thing that’s happened to MASN in like….ever.

2. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of Birds’ loss

At this point, I believe even THIS MAN is having a better month than Adam Jones…

ovie

I’m not suggesting that Adam Jones be benched, but I do think it’s about time ANYONE ELSE leads off.

I mean, I’d even consider Craig Tatum at this point.

3. Fanhouse’s Andrew Johnson says ‘bitterness, cynicism, anger’ have come over Camden Yards fanbase

Which is incorrect.

Bitterness and cynicism happened in 2002. This is just plain indifference.

I can’t believe “Neal S” from The Loss Column somehow didn’t win “Apologist of the Morning” after this small piece of genius…

“I will say this, though: the horrendous start is not further proof of why folks are justified in staying away. Quite the opposite. Now is exactly the time to be there, More so than ever. That more fans don’t think this way is truly sad.”

Yep, people should feel bad because they choose not to pay a day of game service charge and a “premium game” service charge to sit with 20,000 fans from New York and watch a 4-17 team.

Yep, that’s the fans’ fault.

Wow.

4. New York Daily News’ Mark Feinsand says Yanks skipper Girardi not happy about Guthrie plunking Posada

Very obviously Guthrie wasn’t TRYING to plunk Posada. That being said, when a team is forced to go from Jorge Posada to Fransico Cervelli, I can understand the frustration.

There are like 5,100,888 “unwritten” rules in baseball, so I’m guessing AJ Burnett will probably have to plunk…Ty Wigginton?? Wow, has it come to that? Maybe it’ll be Matt Wieters, but someone is getting thrown behind tonight.

And people wonder why other sports have become more popular than baseball.

5. ESPN.com’s Rob Neyer says Chris Tillman threw no-hitter for Norfolk Tides

And this is LEGITIMATELY one of the most significant things that has happened for this organization since Cal Ripken’s retirement.

I’m not kidding either.

Rafael Palmeiro’s 3,000th hit would probably have to be the landmark “moment” since 2001-with maybe the expection of Miguel Tejada winning the All-Star Game MVP honors in 2005.

But this goes in the Top 10, if not the Top 5.

Seriously.

That’s what it’s come to.

As I noted on Twitter last night (feel free to follow us @WNST); Tillman now joins exclusive company in throwing an Orioles minor league no-hitter. Exclusive company like…RADHAMES LIZ!!!

I just hope it’s the last time…EVER…that the two pitchers are compared favorably.

(Note: Liz was a combined no-no with the Frederick Keys; I’m well aware.)

6. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Tim Bascom, Cole McCurry struggled on farm

And before we move on from the Orioles, a reminder that they’re back at it tonight at OPACY-as Brian Matusz faces AJ Burnett at 7:05pm. We’ll be “Orange Crush”-ing at WNST.net.

And congratulations to the MASN staff (we chose Adam Dembeck to accept on their behalf) for being named “Apologist of the Morning.” Nick Markakis was a nominee for Game MVP last night. A game where the Orioles got their asses kicked.

Of course he was.

7. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens cut FB Charles Ali, will try Edgar Jones, Mike McLaughlin at FB

And you would have already known McLaughlin and Edgar Jones were Fullback options had you been listening to our live NFL Draft coverage here on AM1570 over the past weekend.

I’m not really sure that many people in Charm City were even aware there was someone named Charles Ali on the team. Laila Ali would be much more interesting…

Laila Ali

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Johns Hopkins kept NCAA Tournament hopes alive with win over Towson

Sometimes your big brother has to remind you that he’s still your big brother, huh?

Tony Seaman’s Tigers were down 8-0 to the Blue Jays AT HALF.

The Jays will still have to go to Loyola next Saturday and beat the Greyhounds to get into the Tournament, while the Tigers have to beat Hofstra to have a shot at an at-large berth. Towson could still get an automatic bid if they could win the CAA Tournament-and they’ll have the advantage of playing games at Unitas Stadium.

And if you’re a Towson fan who wants to feel better today, I think I can help you. Trust me on this-you’re still a winner. How? Well, let’s take a look at a picture of upcoming Towson grad and current WNST intern Genna to figure out how…

genna

9. WNST.net’s Gary Quill says Endorsement out, Make Music for Me in Kentucky Derby

“Make Music for Me” is a much better name for a horse anyway. Endorsement isn’t a horse, it’s a political event!

I haven’t decided who I think is going to win this thing yet-but I know I’m going to look sharp walking the grounds in Louisville. I’ll be Twitpic-ing and Facebook-ing pictures (Add me as a friend if you’d like, just search “Glenn Clark.” I’ll be the guy labeled as “The Complete Package.”), so you’ll fully understand shortly.

The only way someone could look better is if Lizzy Caplan from True Blood showed up at Churchill Downs. (Thanks Guyism!)

lizzy

10. Daily Racing Form’s Jay Privman says Derby favorite Lookin At Lucky will start at rail

Immediately after the draw, Bob Baffert’s team got a note from jockey Calvin Borel. It read:

“Don’t get comfortable. I’ll be headed there shortly.”

And finally, I leave you with this…

There’s something interesting about Wendy Combattente. I just can’t quite put my pe finger on it (Thanks Busted Coverage!)…

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 22 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

I will repeat what I said about Dave Trembley this morning on The Comcast Morning Show with Drew Forrester.

Should the Orioles bring back Dave Trembley? I don’t know.
Will the Orioles bring back Dave Trembley? I think so.
Could Dave Trembley say to the Orioles “Thanks but no thanks”? Yes, absolutely.

Dave Trembley (or ANY OTHER MANAGER for that matter given the current state of the organization) CANNOT go into a season as a lame duck. If a manager wants this group of rag tag players to respect him, he has to have the respect of Peter Angelos and Andy MacPhail. A manager left with young and/or undesirable players will NOT earn the respect of his group if the players know management is only employing him “until the team gets good.”

If Dave Trembley were to be told “we’re bringing you back, and you have to earn it next season”, I wouldn’t blame him if he responded “thanks, but no thanks.”

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 16 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

Internet issues here at 1550 Hart Rd. (my fault, not anyone’s here) this morning kept me from polishing off Crabs and Beer this morning, so I didn’t get to comment on Lisa Horne’s note on FoxSports.com that Maryland & Virginia would be in a bidding war for the services of Jeff Jagodzinski as head coach.

Insane.

Maryland has a succession plan. James Franklin will be the next head coach. Economically, even a 2-10 season couldn’t change such plans. That’s just where they’re at.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 09 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

I really mean it.

I’m over it.

I understand how hurt everyone is by how wretched the Orioles have been on and off the field for what is not the 12th straight year.

But I’m over it.

I’ve replaced them.

I still LOVE the Orioles; but they’re just not important enough for me to pay attention to anymore. I can’t justify getting so involved with the Orioles when they aren’t important enough.

Hey, I love the Baltimore Blast too. And they actually are both A-a model franchise and B-constant winners.

But I couldn’t justify investing my entire sports fandom in the Blast either.

The Orioles are…..irrelevant. And they continue to prove that they don’t want to change. They’ll be hundreds of fans at Camden Yards next week, and they don’t care. They’re not concerned about getting more people there.

And you know what? I don’t care either.

I’m over it.

Baseball has been replaced for me. UFC Fights, U.S. Open Tennis, The NFL Draft, College Lacrosse, UEFA Champions League, The Gold Cup, World Cup Qualifying, Michael Phelps in Rome, The Triple Crown, the rare occasions when Tiger Woods makes golf semi-interesting, Training Camp, Fantasy Drafts, Spring Football, the Nathan’s 4th of July Hot Dog Contest, even a Kings of Leon concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion last night.

They’ve all replaced the emotion I used to invest in Baseball.

And it’s okay.

Will I be back if things change for the Orioles?

Sure.

But it won’t be the same.

To Drew, Bob, Nestor; and everyone else who still lives and dies over it; I’m sorry.

12 straight losing seasons is unacceptable. An organization that continues to embarrass itself by denying the chance to have hundreds, maybe THOUSANDS of extra fans at a September game against the Rays is unacceptable.

But emotionally, I’m checked out. I used to be angry.

But I’m over it.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 03 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

What happened during Dave Trembley’s press conference last night on MASN really is unacceptable, and DT had every right to act accordingly. Some member of the Orioles’ Public Relations staff should have gone to the hallway in an attempt to quiet the people standing there.

It’s a frustrating season for Dave. Would the Orioles be better with a different manager? Probably not MUCH better….they’re just a bad baseball team. But I understand Dave’s frustration.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 01 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

You know you’re an Orioles fan if…..

….An opposing pitcher is throwing a perfect game, and you’re completely unmoved

….You’ve braved hostile crowds, name calling, battery throwing, and obscenity chanting from opposing fans……..to enjoy a game at Camden Yards

….You used to enjoy a drink while watching a game, but now the drinks have become a necessity to stomach the game

….At least 15 times a year there’s someone in your team’s starting lineup that you can honestly admit you’ve never heard of

….Your child’s Little League team regularly makes more significant offseason additions than your favorite Major League baseball team

….you’ve looked at the TV, the other had more than 225 runs, and you thought “Yeah, that’s about right.”

….Every Spring Training, “if” becomes your new favorite word (CB in Northeast)

….Your car’s MPG is lower than your favorite pitcher’s ERA (Christopher Edwards)

….You’ve ever paid money to go to a Major League Baseball game and your Designated Hitter bunted (John in Towson)

….“Cash for Clunkers” represents your team’s offseason free agent acquisitions (Tim in Overlea)

….Your favorite team’s colors are black, orange, and shame (Alex Thomas)

….When you hear that “no lead is safe”, you understand that TRULY, no lead is safe (Erienne)

….You miss Aubrey Huff (texter “5750”)

….You still respect Rick Dempsey (Mark in Nottingham)

….when “Orioles Magic” is still something that happens….but only to your wallet (Brandon in Abingdon)

….a 4th place finish sounds fantastic (Ken Phillips)

….you’re not sure if you should be proud or embarrassed when your favorite team adds “Baltimore” to the front of their away uniforms (Intern Jack)
