Young receivers pressing for playing time in Towson camp

Posted on 10 August 2013 by WNST Staff

TOWSON, Md. – A 40-minute thunderstorm interrupted the Tigers’ practice schedule on Friday as the team completed its second two-a-day session of the week.

The Tigers ran through a complete practice during the morning before the afternoon practice was stopped due to a 40-minute thunderstorm. At 4:55 p.m., the Tigers returned to the practice field to finish off their final workout before Saturday’s scrimmage.

During the first 10 practices of the pre-season, the Tiger wide receivers have had many opportunities to shine. The Tigers lost four seniors to graduation, leaving plenty of playing time available.

According to Receivers Coach Dassin Blackwell, many of the newcomers have been staking their claims to playing time.

While senior Leon Kinnard, junior Spencer Wilkins and junior Derrick Joseph are the Tigers’ most experienced wide receivers, they are being challenged by a strong group of newcomers.

“Everyone is making progress,” says Blackwell. “But the freshmen have been so impressive. They are fast and talented and they are making progress as they become indoctrinated to college football.”

In addition to red-shirt freshman Willie Ponder, first-year freshmen like Andre Dessenberg, DeAngelo Stephenson, Justin Kulscar, James Harrell and Brian Matthews have done very well. It is very possible that some of them could be on the field when the Tigers open the season at Connecticut on August 29.

Saturday will be Fan Day and gets underway at 2:00 p.m. The Tigers’ first scrimmage will take place immediately after Fan Day.
