Towson football to be featured on “60 Minutes” this weekend

TIGER FOOTBALL TO BE FEATURED ON “60 MINUTES”
CBS News Magazine Accompanied Tiger Football Team On Trip To LSU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Towson University football program will be featured as part of a report on college football, scheduled to air on the November 18 edition of the CBS-TV program, “60 Minutes.”

The most successful news program in television history, “60 Minutes” airs on CBS-TV on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. (EDT).

When the Towson football team travelled to Louisiana State University in late September, CBS reporter Armen Keteyian and his crew accompanied the team. They conducted numerous interviews as part of their story on college football.

Before and after the game against LSU, Keteyian interviewed Coach Rob Ambrose, Director of Athletics Mike Waddell and several players.

Facing one of the top major college football teams in the nation, Towson was a decided underdog when the teams met on Sept. 29.

However, Towson gained national notoriety with its gutty performance against LSU. Towson actually took a 9-7 lead in the second quarter before eventually dropping a 38-22 decision.

Towson’s 22 points scored are the most allowed by LSU this season. LSU currently has an 8-2 record and is ranked eighth in the nation.

According to the story preview, there is no recession when it comes to big-time college football, where hundreds of millions are spent to renovate stadiums, stealth fighters are hired to entertain fans and head coaches can make several million dollars a year.  That’s because football programs have become critical tools in a race to raise revenues, bolster images and ultimately, win bowl games and championships that will attract more students and better players next year.

The University of Michigan Wolverines play in a 112,000-seat stadium, the biggest in the country and recently renovated to the tune of $226 million. The school is a perennial power, but Michigan’s Athletic Director Dave Brandon tells Keteyian you can never sit still in what many call an arms race. “If you don’t keep pace, if you don’t stay competitive, you’re going to have a problem.”

With the revenue from the football program paying for 75 percent of all the other sports programs under him at the 40,000-student public university, Brandon has a huge responsibility. “We’re going to have excited fans, we’re going to fill stadiums, we’re going to be on TV. We’re going to accomplish all the goals that we need to accomplish to keep this department moving ahead,” says Brandon, who once hired a stealth fighter to fly over Michigan’s stadium to fire up the crowd.

Brandon’s work paid off in spades recently.   His team was picked by ESPN to play a televised, season debut game against the Alabama Crimson Tide a few months ago.  Alabama has the ideal football program and one of the country’s highest-paid coaches in Nick Saban, who makes more than $5 million per year.

Is he worth it asks Keteyian?

“Probably not,” says Saban with a laugh. “But I think the other side of that is you almost have to look at what return has there been on that investment.” Alabama has won two national championships in three years and profits have nearly tripled since he took the job in 2007.
The Alabama-Michigan game was viewed on television by millions. It stoked interest in the coming seasons of both teams, selling tickets and merchandise. It burnished images of big, successful universities potential students could be proud to attend.  It’s the kind of reality that’s only a dream for other schools, but still an essential goal for many of them, like Towson University in Maryland.

Towson is about half the size of schools like Michigan and Alabama and plays in a subdivision of Division I in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  It’s good football, but not in a league with Alabama, Michigan or another powerhouse, Louisiana State University. But when the Towson Tigers were asked to play LSU in a televised match, a certain loss, the team saw a win-win situation.

Not only did the game mean a guaranteed $500,000 from LSU – money  to seed scholarships for future players and to improve facilities, among other things to pump its program up – but a chance at national and historic exposure.

“They’ll be more people watching this game tonight than perhaps have ever watched anything to do with Towson University in our history, going back 146 years,” says its Athletic Director Mike Waddell.    Watch a clip.

The Tigers kept it close until the second half and lost 38-22 in what could be considered a very respectable showing and a single step up the ladder towards elite, big-time status someday.  Says Waddell, “You couldn’t buy this type of an advertisement nationally.”

A Towson graduate, Bill Owens, ’88, is the executive producer of “60 Minutes.”

On Election Day eve, no one is “undecided” about the 15-7-0

Posted on 05 November 2012 by Glenn Clark

As always, this week’s 15-7-0 is brought to you by Roofing By Elite. Visit them at roofingbyelite.com. We make 15 observations about football that are ELITE, 7 that are “not so ELITE” and one “zero” who deserves to sleep on the roof from outside of football.

(As a reminder, we don’t do Baltimore Ravens game analysis here. We do PLENTY of that elsewhere. This is about the rest of the world of football.)

Here we go.

“The ELITE 15″…

1. There’s college football…and then there’s Alabama.

I guess things didn’t work out for this guy…

The team may have lost, but this was AWESOME…

Also feeling stupid? LSU QB Zach Metten-Rae-Jepsen…

Let’s check in on a man who is the second best coach in his own division…

Wanna see Kirk Herbstreit play with Lee Corso’s trunk? Of course you do…

Next up for Alabama? Johnny Football…

Elsewhere in the SEC, this.

2. How did I spend my Sunday night? Oh, just watching this postgame video of Chuck Pagano and crying.

Oh man.

Also, these types of throws are making people wil’ out about Andrew Luck. I get it. A quick reminder that Andrew Luck plays indoors. That’s all.

In defeat, Reggie Bush tallied a TD on a play that reminded of a guy who used to play for USC a few years back…

3. The Pittsburgh Steelers just refuse to make things easy on the Ravens…again.

And say whatever you want…this was an incomplete pass.

Also, this shouldn’t have been a flag on Ryan Clark either. I’m not trying to apologize for the Steelers (in fact, I was glad both calls went against them). Had they lost, they would have lost and I would have said they deserved to lose. That’s the way it works in the NFL.

Also-are you a Ravens fan considering voting for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan? This is the man you’d be voting for…

4. Despite what the computers might say, I think we all know Oregon is the 2nd best team in the country.

We’ll get to Collin Klein in a second, but Kenjon Barner PROBABLY moved to second on the Heisman Trophy list (ahead of Manti Te’o) in the Ducks’ win at USC…

The Trojans lost their third game of the season, but it’s hard to blame their quarterback. Unless you’re former USC RB Marc Tyler…

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, UCLA blew out Arizona a week after Arizona ran over USC. But UCLA’s win came with their assistants looking like this…

5. And I think we all know Kansas State is the 3rd best team in the country.

They looked really good against Oklahoma State Saturday night…

Also, here’s this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfmFwIGUEb8

Elsewhere in the Big 12, did this final 2 point conversion in West Virginia-TCU actually happen?

(Since I don’t like WVU…I don’t care if it did or didn’t. I’m just glad they said it did.)

Go see the Ravyns because Rob Fahey is the freaking greatest.

I had no idea Unwritten Law was still a thing. I’m so freaking in.

JD McPherson has a throwback sound that pleases me greatly.

I think there’s a significant chance Lauryn Hill is crazy. I don’t care. She’s so freaking ridiculously talented. I still can’t believe what a jerk her mom was to her in Sister Act 2 though.

This isn’t the most impressive list I’ve ever seen if I’m telling you the truth.

Umm…I’m KINDA excited for Wreck-It Ralph. I’d probably go see “Flight” if someone asked nice enough.

Otherwise…here’s a guy with a horse head mask running through Hurricane Sandy on a local DC news cast…

And here’s a picture Kate Upton Tweeted recently…

Yep, we upgraded there.

The 15-7-0 is worth falling 24 miles for

Posted on 15 October 2012 by Glenn Clark

As always, this week’s 15-7-0 is brought to you by Roofing By Elite. Visit them at roofingbyelite.com. We make 15 observations about football ELITE, 7 about football “not so ELITE” and one “zero” who deserves to sleep on the roof from outside of football.

(As a reminder, we don’t do Baltimore Ravens game analysis here. We do PLENTY of that elsewhere. This is about the rest of the world of football.)

“The ELITE 15″…

1. Sometimes a single player can be a real program changer. For Maryland, Stefon Diggs might well be that player.

He at least does a hell of a Jacoby Jones impression…

Maryland improved to 4-2 (2-0 ACC) with a 27-20 win over Virginia despite Perry Hills being their leading rusher with SEVEN FLIPPING YARDS.

Also, Pe’Shon Howard looked pretty good in the new Terps’ hoops uniforms…

2. I hate saying it, but it’s awfully fun to watch Robert Griffin III play football.

It’s sorta not fair. The Minnesota Vikings were playing real football while the Skins’ QB was playing Madden from the year Michael Vick was on the cover…

Ugh. Now we have to hear DC fans running their mouths all week. Well, maybe all of them except this guy.

Also-I hope the Vikings enjoyed their taste of people thinking they were good for a week. The Cardinals waive hello, but we’ll get back to them.

3. ALERT! ALERT! Shonn Greene still plays in the NFL.

161 yards and 3TD’s for the New York Jets RB in a blowout loss over the Indianapolis Colts. But no, I’m GLAD I picked up Vick Ballard before getting trounced in Fantasy Football.

Also, tt was so totally worth putting Tim Tebow in for punt protection so you could one day be able to do this in a blowout win!

And…

4. The reports of LSU’s demise were greatly exaggerated.

I mean, just ask these guys!

Steve Spurrier isn’t really sure if he’s mad about his Gamecocks’ performance…

The East-West SEC showdown actually split a few households…

So now we wait for LSU-Alabama III…or IV…or who the eff knows why don’t we just play this game a hundred times to determine a national champ every year?

5. For Orioles fans who haven’t been paying as much attention to college football this season, Kansas State QB Collin Klein is in the “name to know” category.

It wasn’t an overwhelming performance for the Heisman Trophy candidate in Kansas State’s narrow win over Iowa State, but his three rushing TD’s looked better in a week where Geno Smith didn’t particularly shine…

K-State and WVU tangle next week. It had a chance to mean even more, but it still looks like kind of a big deal.

6. The Atlanta Falcons only needed 40 seconds on the clock to come back and beat the Raiders.

Matt Ryan was FAR from brilliant, but Matt Bryant bailed him out at the end to keep the Falcons perfect.

Do you feel like LOL-ing today? Here’s Carson Palmer trying to make a tackle…

Also part of the reason the Falcons are the only undefeated team left in the NFL? Harry Douglas’ concentration…

7. You like that Russell Wilson gets to actually enjoy a last second miracle win this time.

Because this time it really WAS a catch!

Let’s enjoy this grab from Doug Baldwin…

Wes Welker would tell you what he thought of the game, but it would probably come out sounding like “BROWNAHHHHH”…

I think it’s appropriate to wrap up this one with the most Tom Brady thing EVER…

Oh I almost forgot. Richard Sherman Tweeted something funny postgame…

Constitution Hall); Raveonettes (Saturday 9pm Black Cat); Muse “The 2nd Law” and Van Morrison “Born to Sing: No Plan B” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday)

I mean, I hope Jack White doesn’t walk off stage a few songs into his set Saturday at MPP like he did this weekend in New York. Although in fairness, this is hilarious…

This song kicks ass…

Also, Alabama Shakes…

And if I’m not in Columbia Saturday night (or at ALDS Game 1), I hope to be at RHL…

You may have heard me play the new Muse track a couple of times on the show. Listener Bobby described it as “hot fire”, but I thought that was reserved for Dylan Dilinjah…

9. Maryland Renaissance Festival (Saturday & Sunday Revel Grove); Jim Florentine (Thursday-Saturday Magooby’s Joke House), Tom Papa (Thursday-Saturday DC Improv); “Taken 2″ out in theaters (Friday)

You’re thinking “why would someone take another member of Liam Neeson’s family”, but then again…

Also, here’s a preview of the film…

The 15-7-0 offers a hearty “RIP Defense” to the game of football

Posted on 01 October 2012 by Glenn Clark

As always, this week’s 15-7-0 is brought to you by Roofing By Elite. Visit them at roofingbyelite.com. We make 15 observations about football ELITE, 7 about football “not so ELITE” and one “zero” who deserves to sleep on the roof from outside of football.

(As a reminder, we don’t do Baltimore Ravens game analysis here. We do PLENTY of that elsewhere. This is about the rest of the world of football.)

“The ELITE 15″…

1. The performance Towson authored in defeat at LSU is still very much worthy of the term “elite”.

On more than one occasion during the first three quarters in Baton Rouge I found myself saying “oh my God oh my God oh my God”. It was an amazing effort from the Tigers in Death Valley…

No matter what, it doesn’t mean this didn’t happen…

I remember taking a picture of the screen when Morgan State lead West Virginia 10-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Things went SIGNIFICANTLY better for Towson after their moment than they did for MSU.

2. Hey! Remember last week when the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons were the best team in their respective conferences? Like Sonny & Cher said, “the beat goes on”.

Want to see Danieal Manning make an interception return TD look like a kick return TD? Of course you do.

It’s probably worth taking a closer look at the block Jonathan Joseph laid on Nate Washington during the return…

Oh my. Houston stomped Tennessee, but you knew that was going to happen. Tennessee also lost quarterback Jake Locker for what looks like could be “several weeks” according to CBS. So they’ve got that going for them.

The Falcons-Panthers game was significantly more interesting. Carolina had a chance to pull the upset at the Georgia Dome but (first) Cam Newton fumbled the ball after what would have been a late 3rd down conversion (then) Ron Rivera decided not to go for it on 4th and short but instead give the ball back to Matt Ryan (and) Ryan did this from the shadow of his own endzone…

The Falcons would get a game winner from Matt Bryant to stay undefeated, the Panthers fell to 1-3. Matt Ryan’s thoughts are NSFW if you’re a lip-reader…

Earlier in the game, Cam Newton did THIS…

And I guess spending time in Atlanta has helped Dunta Robinson perfect his Tomahawk Chop…

3. Also from the “don’t forget we’re really good” category, I give you the New England Patriots.

The Pats were in a bit of trouble in the first half of this one, but then they remembered they were the Patriots and scored like 600 unanswered points. Was it 600? I think it was 600. Let’s ask Tom Brady.

By the way-I’m terrible at lip-reading. If you told me he was asking about whether or not Looper was any good, I would believe you.

Now Ryan Fitzpatrick’s reaction…

Maybe he just found out the new stadium is going up in Los Angeles and is getting excited about buying a home in Burbank.

Vince Wilfork nearly killed a man in this one…

And Rob Gronkowski made sure he didn’t miss another spike…

4. Since you started reading this week’s 15-7-0, West Virginia scored three more touchdowns.

WVU QB Geno Smith threw more touchdowns (8) than incomplete passes (6) Saturday against Baylor. He also threw for 656 yards and no picks. Try to keep up…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqDruveDZD0

How about that last catch from JD Woods to seal it? Geesh. You might not have seen it because your head was still spinning from the 133 points scored in the game.

Smith is your Heisman Trophy frontrunner and the Mountaineers are a sexy “dark hose” pick to make a run at the BCS Championship. The folks in Morgantown might want to make sure they have room for a third digit on the scoreboard.

5. Is it safe declare that the Urban Meyer experiment at Ohio State is already working?

First, we start with the fact that ESPN’s College Gameday was in East Lansing this week. It’s noteworthy. Here’s the singular best sign…

That’s just…so…exceptional. Mom and dad are proud of the education they’re paying for you to get at MSU!

The Buckeyes are 5-0 but can’t win anything. This will be an awkward storyline if the season continues this way…

And since the Big Ten stinks, I kinda have to assume it will. Oh and also, the Spartans coaches were complaining postgame that the game film they received from Ohio State wasn’t up to standards. It sounds like whiny bitching from sore losers, but I’ll let you be the judge…

I don’t really understand the issue. Of course, if they had sent the right video, the Spartans probably would have been able to figure out what the Buckeyes’ hand signals were all about…

6. And some weeks Peyton Manning really still IS Peyton Manning.

Remember what everyone said about the Raiders defense? They probably didn’t say enough. The guy most thankful for the asskicking? Demaryius Thomas. Otherwise this would have been REALLY embarrassing…

And for fellow Peyton Manning fantasy owners, this one is worth watching again…

7. The Chargers defense would have been an awfully good start in fantasy football this week.

Well, other than this Jamaal Charles run…

But the six turnovers, they were helpful. And since we’re talking about baked goods, thanks to whoever brought the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding (I’m sorry I forgot who you are!) to Maritime Magic Friday night (an event to benefit Living Classrooms Foundation). Holy hell I’ve never had anything greater.

Top pick Gausman hoping to build off previous Oriole guidance

Top pick Gausman hoping to build off previous Oriole guidance

Posted on 08 June 2012 by Ryan Chell

Even before getting drafted fourth-overall Monday by the Orioles in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft, Kevin Gausman already had a taste of Baltimore during his two years at LSU.

Gausman, an All-American for the Tigers this season after going 11-1 with a 2.72 ERA with 128 strikeouts in 115 innings of work, was helped along in his development as a pitcher by two former Orioles-one in particular who Gausman can relate to having to live up to the expectation of being a high MLB draft pick.

Those mentors were LSU P coach Alan Dunn-who spent 2007-2011 as a bullpen coach and pitching coordinator for Baltimore-and former Orioles pitcher Ben McDonald, the 1989 Golden Spikes Award Winner and the first overall pick pick that same year by the team out of Gausman’school of LSU.

Gausman joined Glenn Clark on “The Reality Check” this week and said he has been in constant contact with the two over the last year and that he owes his selection Monday to their direction and guidance.

“Alan Dunn came in here and taught me so much about pitching,” Gausman said. “When he talks, everyone on the pitching staff just kind of hangs on every word that he says.”

Now armed with major league expertise, he is ready to take that and hopefully return the favor to Dunn’s old employers.

“It’s an exciting time of the year for me,” Gausman said. “Obviously, yesterday was a happy day and a fun day for me and my family.”

And while he was honored to get the call, Gasman-currently still playing with LSU in NCAA Super Regionals with the chance to go to the College World Series in Omaha-says he knows that the Orioles are going to expect him to grow more and more as a thrower in order to keep the Orioles in contention.

“I guess I’m just trying to get better every day and learn from my mistakes-and trying to key in on those mistakes,” Gausman told Clark. “I’m really just trying to go out there every day knowing what I need to work on.”

And Ben McDonald-who also had the pressure of living up to being an Orioles top draft picks-has also been there bringing the insight as a major league pitcher to help Gausman detect those problems and correct them.

Gausman told Clark that he’s always been comfortable and open toward approaching McDonald with advice since the day they met.

“Now that I know him, I feel like I can call him and ask him any questions,” he said.

But Gausman did admit that Alan Dunn’s impact could be seen in his growth between his rocky freshman year and his 2012 sophomore campaign.

In Gausman’s freshman season in 2011, he admitted he had some struggles being consistent. He also wanted to be able to have an number of pitches at his disposal to keep the opposing hitters off-balance.

Dunn arrived in 2012, and the young Tiger credited the former Oriole with perfecting his repertoire pitch-by-pitch and spending that much time with him.

“I had an average slider last year, and it wasn’t very good. We started throwing a true curve-ball. We focused on that the entire fall and going into the season, and then…we focused on the slider again.”

Kevin Gausman

“He came in here and developed me into who I am,” Gausman said. “He’s been great to me. He came in here and we hit the ground running.”

Gausman said Dunn helped him match his pitches to his attitude on the mound as an aggressive hurler.

“I’m more of a power pitcher, and he thought I needed a power slider,” Gausman said. “We started working on that and now I feel like I have a pretty good arsenal.”

McDonald noticed the changes personally.

“What jumps out at you is the big fastball that he has. He’s going to sit at 94-95 mph and better than that, he’s got great movement on his fastball,” McDonald noted. “His 2-seam fastball really has some nice downward sink to it, which is going to be great for Camden Yards because we all know it’s a pretty good hitter’s ballpark.”

And for now, he’s hoping to finish his journey at LSU so that he can hopefully move on to the next stage of his baseball career-hopefully suiting up for Buck Showalter in the orange and black.

“I’m really honored about the situation that I’m in right now. These months coming up will be crunch time, and we’ll see what happens.

McDonald said he expects that time to be sooner than what you think.

“He’s very mature for his age, he’s got good stuff, and I think he’s going to be a kid that’s going to move quickly through the Oriole organization,”he said. “I’d be surprised if two years from now we’re not hearing his name in the big leagues.”

WNST thanks Kevin Gausman and hopes to see him in an Oriole uniform! Hear from Kevin Gausman in the BuyaToyota.com Audio Vault at WNST.net, as well as Ben McDonald and Alan Dunn!

Orioles select LSU pitcher Kevin Gausman with fourth overall pick of 2012 draft

After taking high school players with their first-round selection in each of the last three amateur drafts, the Orioles selected right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman from LSU with the fourth overall pick of the 2012 amateur draft.

Gausman was the first pitcher selected after Stanford’s Mark Appel — the consensus top pick by most draft experts — slid down the draft board due to signability concerns. However, the Orioles were impressed with the 21-year-old’s tall stature at 6-feet-4 and high ceiling with an outstanding fastball consistently reaching the mid to upper-90s.

“Kevin Gausman is one of the premier power pitchers in all of college baseball,” scouting director Gary Rajsich told reporters in a conference call. “He’s a power arm with a power arsenal that he commands, and we’re happy to have him as part of the Orioles organization.

Having worked with former Orioles bullpen coach Alan Dunn at Louisiana State, Gausman possesses a good changeup and also throws a solid two-seamer, but his breaking stuff is underdeveloped at this point. He is expected to be on a fast track to the major leagues with scouts projecting him to be a middle-of-the-rotation starter with top-end potential if he can develop more consistency with a breaking pitch.

Gausman weighs only 185 pounds, meaning he could potentially add a little more to his fastball as he gets stronger over the next couple years.

A sixth-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2010 draft, Gausman did not sign and elected to play baseball for the Tigers, where he thrived against top-notch competition in the SEC. He was 11-1 with a 2.72 earned run average and 128 strikeouts in 115 2/3 innings (16 starts) this season as a draft-eligible sophomore. Gausman was 5-6 with a 3.51 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings in his freshman season in 2011.

Nicknamed “Goose” and possessing a colorful personality, Gausman said in an MLB Network profile he eats four powdered mini-donuts between innings during his starts. The right-hander tries to model his game after Phillies ace Roy Halladay.

While Appel was not expected to be available when the Orioles picked with the fourth selection, San Francisco pitcher Kyle Zimmer and high school southpaw Max Fried had also been mentioned as candidates Baltimore was considering in the first round.

The Orioles last chose a college pitcher in the first round in 2008 when they selected left-hander Brian Matusz from San Diego. Gausman is the third LSU player to be drafted by the Orioles in the first round, joining 1989 first overall pick Ben McDonald and the 19th pick of the 2001 draft Mike Fontenot.
