Terps RB Brown suspended indefinitely after police assault

Posted on 05 July 2013 by WNST Staff

The University of Maryland football team isn’t even close to taking the field yet for 2013, and already there might be a hole in their backfield.

Sophomore Wes Brown, one of Coach Randy Edsall’s four-star recruits out Good Counsel in 2012-along with star receiver Stefon Diggs, was suspended by the Maryland football program after being arrested Wednesday night for reportedly assaulting a police officer.

Brown, who finished second on the team in rushing in 2012 with 382 carries on 90 carries and two touchdowns, was arrested late Wednesday night after an incident with an officer in College Park.

Brown reportedly fought with the officer attempting to question him by taking a swing at him, pushing himself away and fleeing the scene.

He left behind a cell phone after his escape, which not only had an audio recording of the conversation he had with the officer, but it was found to not be Brown’s.

The Baltimore Police Department reportedly assisted in locating and arresting Brown, and he was taken in late that night.

He was charged with second degree assault, wiretapping, fleeing the scene, and theft under $1,000 for the cell phone.

A hearing is scheduled for July 31st, and he was assigned a 7,500 bail corresponding with the assault charge. The wiretapping and theft charges are expected to be dropped.

He is still in jail according to the Washington Post, but is expected to be released soon.

The University of Maryland released a statement, but little is being said of the incident with an investigation in the works.

“We are extremely concerned that one of our student-athletes, Wes Brown, was arrested Wednesday evening,” the statement said. “This is a matter that we take very seriously. We have been in contact with the local authorities and will continue to cooperate throughout the entire process.

“The University of Maryland has suspended Brown, and he is not permitted to participate in any athletic-related activities.”

Albert Reid and Brandon Ross will continue on as tailbacks for Edsall should Brown’s suspension continue.

Terps G Allen likely done for season with broken hand

Posted on 25 March 2013 by WNST Staff

With the Terps playing well in the NIT Tournament as they attempt to earn a championship appearance, things got harder for the University of Maryland.

Head coach Mark Turgeon announced Monday in his media session that freshman point guard Seth Allen, who averaged 7.8 PPG in his first season in College Park.

Turgeon said that Allen will not play Tuesday in their NIT quarterfinal match against Alabama Tuesday night on ESPN, and likely will be done for the season.

Allen, who had struggles with turnovers earlier in the season, had played well in the final stretch of the season leading into the ACC Tournament and NIT playoffs.

He finished in double figures in four of his last fives games, including 13 points in their second round game against Denver.

A combination of Pe’Shon Howard and Nick Faust will likely see action at point guard.
