Morgan’s Chiles, Black recognized by MEAC

Du’Vaughn Maxwell of Hampton was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Lawrence Cooks, also of Hampton, earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Morgan State’s Ian Chiles was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Maxwell (F, 6-7, 215, Sr., Manhattan, N.Y.) recorded a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds as he led the Pirates to a 101-95 double overtime victory over Winthrop.  Maxwell also recorded five blocks, one steal and one assist, while playing 44 minutes, in the victory.

Cooks (G, 6-1, 175, r-Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) scored 12 points with three rebounds and one steal in 24 minutes of play in the Pirates victory over Winthrop.

Chiles (C, 7-2, 260, r-Sr., Cliffside Park, N.J.) grabbed eight boards, blocked three shots and registered one steal against Cal State Northridge.  He also added 19 points and one assist offensively.

Other Top Performances

Justin Black (MSU) recorded 24 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals against Cal State Northridge.

Coppin’s Cole, Murray honored by MEAC

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State freshman Patrick Cole was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, while junior teammate Michael Murray was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week the league announced on Monday.

Cole earned his second MEAC Rookie of the Week honor after scoring 21 points in the Eagles 98-78 victory over Cheyney on Saturday. He was 6-of-10 from the floor, which included making 2-of-3 three-point attempts, and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. He also added three assists and a steal.

Murray earned his first Defensive Player of the Week award after posting 14 points and grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds against Cheyney. He also had two assists and a steal and reached double figures in rebounding for the fourth consecutive game.

Adrien Coleman of Bethune-Cookman was named the MEAC Player of the Week.

Coppin State returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Loyola at 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
