Morgan’s Chiles, Black recognized by MEAC

Du’Vaughn Maxwell of Hampton was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Lawrence Cooks, also of Hampton, earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Morgan State’s Ian Chiles was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Maxwell (F, 6-7, 215, Sr., Manhattan, N.Y.) recorded a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds as he led the Pirates to a 101-95 double overtime victory over Winthrop.  Maxwell also recorded five blocks, one steal and one assist, while playing 44 minutes, in the victory.

Cooks (G, 6-1, 175, r-Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) scored 12 points with three rebounds and one steal in 24 minutes of play in the Pirates victory over Winthrop.

Chiles (C, 7-2, 260, r-Sr., Cliffside Park, N.J.) grabbed eight boards, blocked three shots and registered one steal against Cal State Northridge.  He also added 19 points and one assist offensively.

Other Top Performances

Justin Black (MSU) recorded 24 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals against Cal State Northridge.

Coppin forward Murray named MEAC Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Michael Murray of Coppin State was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Hakeem Baxter, of Maryland Eastern Shore, earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Norfolk State’s Brandon Goode was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Murray (F, 6-5, 220, Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 28 points to lead Coppin State to a 73-54 win over Delaware State.  Murray nailed his first six shots of the game en route to a 75-percent (11-of-15) shooting performance from the field, including 3-of-5 from long range.  He also grabbed seven boards, dished out two assists and stole one pass in 34 minutes of play.

Baxter (G, 6-2, 170, Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded a career-high 28 points, connecting on 9-of-10 baskets from the charity stripe, with three rebounds, one assist and one steal against University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Goode (C, 7-0, 235, Sr., Bronx, N.Y.) totaled 17 rebounds, seven blocks and two steals in two conference wins over Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M last week.  He tallied nine rebounds with a game-high five blocks against B-CU.  Offensively, he added 20 total points, connecting on 53.8-percent (7-of-13) from the field.

Jamie Adams (FAMU) registered 24 points, one rebound and two assists against Norfolk State.

Tyshawn Bell (DSU) scored a career-high 19 points, with five rebounds, two assists and one steal against Baptist Bible.

Justin Black (MSU) scored 17 points, with six rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block against Howard.

Marcel Boyd (Howard) posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds against American.

Ian Chiles (MSU) recorded a game-high nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks in a win over Howard. 

Kendall Gray (DSU) finished with a total nine points, 17 rebounds and eight blocked shots in three games last week.

Malcolm Hawkins (NSU) averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steal in a pair of conference wins over Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.

Alfonzo Houston (NCCU) averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals to help the Eagles finish 1-1 last week, including a non-conference victory over Old Dominion.

Trey Kellum (FAMU) recorded a combined 13 points, 17 boards, two assists and two steals against Norfolk State and Hampton last week.

Du’Vaughn Maxwell (Hampton) tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks against Florida A&M.

Prince Okoroh (Howard) finished with 25 points, three rebounds and one steal against Morgan State.

Deron Powers (Hampton) scored 22 points, with three rebounds, four assists and two steals against Florida A&M.

Troy Snyder (UMES) hauled down 12 rebounds, along with eight points, one assist and one steal against UMBC.

Coppin G Smith picks up weekly MEAC honor

Sterling Smith of Coppin State was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  James Daniel of Howard earned Rookie of the Week honors while Du’Vaughn Maxell, of Hampton, was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Smith (G, 6-4, 200, So., Chico, Calif.) led the Eagles to a 1-1 mark last week, including a 78-73 victory over Oregon State.  Smith scored a career-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field, with four rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the Eagles’ first-ever win against a Pac-12 opponent.  He also scored 16 points with seven rebounds and two steals against California.  For the week, he averaged 18.5 points, shooting 63-percent from the field (14-of-22), with 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 2.5 steals.

Daniel (G/F, 5-11, 165, Fr., Hampton, Va.) averaged 22.0 points, shooting 9-of-17 from 3-point range (.529), with 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in a pair of wins against Washington College and Gwynedd-Mercy  last week.  He recorded 28 points, connecting on 60-percent of his baskets from long-range (6-of-10), with six boards and three steals against Washington College.

Muhammad Abdul-Aleem (FAMU) finished with 16 points, hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point range, with two rebounds against Rutgers.

Hakeem Baxter (UMES) scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds against Columbia.

Ian Chiles (MSU) registered 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal against Ohio State.

Brian Darden (Hampton) scored 18 points, connecting on 4-of-5 baskets (.800) from long range, with five rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 77-69 win over William & Mary.

Mrdjan Gasevic (DSU) recorded 10 points, hitting 5-of-6 from the field, with four rebounds against Cairn.

Kendall Gray (DSU) posted 11 points and seven rebounds with three assists and two blocks against Cairn.

Bradon Goode (NSU) recorded 10 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks against Texas Southern.

Malcolm Hawkins (NSU) hit a career high 31 points with six rebounds, two assists and one steal against Texas Southern.

Jeremy Ingram (NCCU) scored a game-high 27 points, including 19 in the second half, with two blocks against Cincinnati.

Ricky Johnson (B-CU) recorded 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal against Trinity Baptist College.

KyRee Jones (UMES) posted 17 points, hitting 5-of-5 from 3-point range, against Columbia.

Trey Kellum (FAMU) recorded a combined 21 points and 10 rebounds with two steals and one assist two non-conference games last week.

Jordan Lawson (DSU) tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in a 107-48 win over Cairn.

 Prince Okoroh (Howard) averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds 2.5 blocks and 4.0 steals in wins over Washington College and Gwynedd-Mercy.

Clemmye Owens (B-CU) recorded 12 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist against Trinity Baptist.

Coppin Guard Murray honored by MEAC

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State’s Michael Murray has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week the league announced on Monday.

Murray averaged 15.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in games against UMBC and Wagner. The junior scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Eagles victory at UMBC and added 11 points and 10 rebounds against Wagner.

He shot 63.2 percent from the floor, including 60.0 percent from the three-point line, in the two games. He also added three assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Murray leads the Eagles averaging 13.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game and has seven double-doubles for the year.

Rashid Gaston of Norfolk State was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week and Austin Witter of North Carolina A&T took home the Defensive Player of the Week honors.
