January 26, 2013 –  – Senior swingman DeWayne Jackson and redshirt-junior center Ian Chiles led Morgan State to a hard fought 55-52 victory over North Carolina A&T at Corbett Sports Center. Jackson finished with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Ian Chiles posted 14 points and 10 boards. Chiles was 7 for 8 from the field as the Bears post play continued to keep the Bears close, despite a poor perimeter shooting night. Anthony Hubbard, who chipped in 10 points, also scored on a fastbreak layup with 34 seconds left to give Morgan State a 53-52 advantage. The Bears held A&T scoreless in the final moments to improve its record to 6-10 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
The Aggies welcomed back nine veterans, including four starters, from a squad that posted a 12-20 overall record, finished 7th in the MEAC with a 7-9 ledger. Lamont Middleton leads the Aggies averaging 12.2 points and is shooting 37 percent from the field. Adrian Powell is also posting double-figures for A&T by averaging 12.2 points and shooting 34 percent from 3-point range. Austin Witter, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, is the team’s leading rebounder by averaging 7.2 rpg to go along with 6.2 ppg. Head coach Cy Alexander (Catawba ’75) enters his first season as the Aggies head coach and he currently holds a 362-324 record in his 24th year of coaching.

March 11, 2011 – Kevin Thompson came off the bench to put on a dominating performance, scoring a game-high 22 points to help Morgan State defeat Bethune-Cookman, 61-48 in the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s tournament at the Joel Coliseum.  The Wildcats (21-12), the Number 1 seed and regular season champion, were led CJ Reed, the MEAC Player of the Year, with seven points. The Bears (17-13) were the Number 4 seed and advanced to the championship where they fell to No. 2 seed Hampton 60-55.

• The Bears’ first 10 games of the 2012-13 season were on the road where they finished 3-7.

LAST TIME VS. SAVANNAH STATE
January 15, 2013 — Morgan State lost a fierce battle, 78-70, in double overtime.  After an early deficit for MSU, the game was close until the very end, with 11 ties and 15 lead changes. SSU needed a pair of three-pointers by standout guard Preston Blackmon in the last 26 seconds to help send the ballgame into the second OT. Blackmon scored 15 of his game-high 41 points after regulation, setting a SSU school record for points in a Division I game.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
The Tigers welcome back 14 veterans, including five starters, from a squad that posted a 21-12 overall record, finished as the MEAC regular season champions with a 14-2 ledger. SSU had a total new look with nine players on this year’s roster consisting of five junior college transfers, four freshmen, and four walk-ons. All-MEAC forward Rashad Hassan leads the Tigers averaging 12.8 points and is shooting 54 percent from the field. All-MEAC guard Preston Blackmon (12.0 ppg) is also averaging double-figures. Head coach Horace Broadnax (Georgetown ’86) enters his 9th season as the Tigers head coach and he currently holds a 104-126 (.452) record.

Senior guard DeWayne Jackson and junior Justin Black of Morgan State University’s men’s basketball team were named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Conference Team. It was the second consecutive season Jackson was selected to the first-team, and it was Black’s first time on the team as a third team selection.

MSU senior DeWayne Jackson enters his final MEAC Tournament in the Orange & Blue. The 6-foot-8 swingman has been a major contributor at Morgan State where he has won a MEAC Championship, played in the NCAA Tournament and has received a number of postseason honors, including MEAC Rookie of the Year. Jackson is the only player in school history to have the combination of over 1,500 points (1,549 – No. 7), 500 rebounds (543 – No. 9), 150 steals (169 – No. 2) and 150 assists (178).

EXCEPTIONALLY EFFICIENT
Ian Chiles is another Bear that finished the regular season with a top-10 MEAC ranking as the redshirt-junior center is No. 9 in the conference with his .534 field-goal percentage and is No. 9 in blocks averaging 1.6 per game.

THE SETUP ARTIST
Justin Black ranked No. 10 in assists at 3.0 per game and No. 7 with his 1.0 assist-to-turnover ratio amongst all MEAC players.

Todd Bozeman, now in his seventh season as head coach of the Bears, has an overall win percentage of .558 (125-99) after 223 games at Morgan State. That winning mean is the second highest among 15 head coaches in the history of the Morgan State men’s basketball program. Nathaniel Frazier’s winning percentage of .578 (166-121) is the highest percentage in Morgan State history.

PAINT PLAY
One area where the Bears have been consistent is under the basket. Morgan State ranked No. 4 in the league in total rebounding at 35.9 per game, No. 2 in offensive rebounds at 37.1, No. 2 in field goal percentage at 44.6 and No. 2 in blocked shots (5.2).

NORFOLK, Va. – Anthony Hubbard came off the bench to score 16 points and Morgan State pulled away in the second half to defeat South Carolina State 61-52 Monday night in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

Hubbard scored 11 points in a span of just under 7 minutes midway through the first half to rally the fifth-seeded Bears (15-14), who will play Savannah State in a Thursday night quarterfinal.

South Carolina State (6-24) went cold after scoring the game’s first 10 points and leading 32-29 at halftime. The 12th-seeded Bulldogs shot 25.7 percent (8 of 31) in the second half, including 1 of 13 from 3-point range after making 4 of 6 first-half 3-pointers.

DeWayne Jackson scored 12 points for Morgan State to move into fifth place on the Bears’ career scoring list with 1,549 points.

Matthew Hezekiah paced South Carolina State with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

January 12, 2013 — Morgan State entered tonight’s ballgame attempting to snap a five-game losing streak by recording its first victory of the New Year. It was a long time between victories for head coach Todd Bozeman‘s team. In fact, they last won a game beating VMI way back on December 1st.  But tonight, they can put that all behind them. Junior guard Justin Black led the Bears with 17 points as Morgan State (4-8, 1-0) claimed their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory on Saturday. The win improved the Bears to 8-0 record in conference openers under Bozeman.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs welcomed back three veterans from a squad that posted a 5-26 overall record, finished last in the MEAC with a 0-16 ledger. SCSU had a total new look with nine players on this year’s roster consisting of five junior college transfers, four freshmen, and four walk-ons. Junior 6-foot-11 forward Matthew Hezekiah leads the Bulldogs averaging 12.8 points and is shooting 56 percent from the field. Senior guard and team captain Khalif Toombs is also averaging double-figures (12.3 ppg) and leads the league dishing out 5.4 assists per game. Head coach Tim Carter (Kansas ’79) enters his 6th season as the Bulldogs head coach and he currently holds a 69-117 (.370) record.

TOURNAMENT FLASHBACK vs. S.C. STATE
Morgan State pulled off a 68-61 victory against No. 3 seed South Carolina State in the 2010 MEAC Tournament Championship. League player of the year Reggie Holmes added 17 points for the top-seeded Bears (27-9). They shot 53 percent to overcome 20 turnovers and avenged their only regular-season conference loss by becoming the first repeat MEAC champion since Hampton in 2001 and ’02.

One area where the Bears have been consistent is under the basket. Morgan State ranks No. 4 in the league in total rebounding at 35.9 per game, No. 2 in offensive rebounds at 37.1, No. 2 in field goal percentage at 44.6 and No. 2 in blocked shots (5.2).

WASHINGTON, DC – The Washington Wizards will conduct pre-draft workouts on Wednesday, June 13th at Verizon Center.

Thompson was one of the premiere big men in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference over the last four seasons. He helped lead the Bears to two MEAC Tournament championships and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. His MSU teams reached the MEAC Championship Game three times in his four seasons.

As a senior Thompson averaged 10.8 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. As a junior he averaged 13.1 points and 9.1 rebounds. As a sophomore he averaged a double double, 12.7 points and 11.8 rebounds. Even as a freshman Thompson averaged a respectable 8.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Thompson’s former Morgan teammate Reggie Holmes was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies after the 2010 NBA Draft and played for the team in the NBA Summer League.

THE PATH TO THE FINALS
•   Should Morgan State win Tuesday’s First Round contest, it would advance to a Quarterfinals matchup against No. 1 seed Savannah State set for Wednesday, March 7 at 6 p.m.

•   With a win, the Bears would advance to the Semifinals set for Friday, March 9 at 6 p.m.

•   With a victory in the Semifinals the Bears would advance to its fifth straight Championship Final.

•   The Final is set for Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. and will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

•   No. 9 Morgan will enter the MEAC Tournament next week as one of the hottest teams in the league having won four of its last five games, including its last two.

•   At 9-19, the Bears finished with its fewest wins since recording a 4-26 record during the 2005-06 season under head coach Alfred “Butch” Beard.

• Morgan State had four players score in double-figures and Justin Black converted 4 of 4 free throws in the final 24 seconds to help the Bears beat Florida A&M 74-68 on Thursday night. Aric Brooks led the Bears with 15 points, while Justin Black had 12, and DeWayne Jackson and Shaquille Duncan added 10 apiece.

• At Florida A&M, Morgan State shot 68 percent (17-25) from the field in the first half and finished the game by making 23-of-43 (53 percent), and was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

• MSU’s 91 points against the Eagles were the most points the Bears have scored this season, and also the most points scored by the Bears since defeating Florida A&M 94-68 on Feb. 7, 2010.

THE SERIES VS. THE PIRATES
• Tuesday morning’s game will be the 33rd meeting between Morgan State and Hampton in men’s basketball. The Pirates hold a 21-11 all-time record against the Bears.

•  The Bears have won four of the last six meetings against the Pirates, with one of the losses coming against Hampton during the 2011 MEAC championship game.

•  MSU’s Last Outing vs. Hampton – Christopher Tolson hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute to help seal a 68-63 win in an ESPNU televised matchup at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 30. Tolson scored 19 points to lead the Pirates, who took control of the game late in the second half and withstood last second baskets by MSU’s Larry Bastfield. The Bears led for most of the game and held a 31-28 halftime advantage despite sporadic play by both teams.

NOTE ON THE PIRATES
•  Hampton’s last game in the MEAC Tournament was against the Bears in the Finals. The Pirates got some timely baskets from Darrion Pellum to help Hampton beat the Bears 60-55 in the MEAC Tournament Championship game at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Darrion Pellum was named to the Most Valuable Player of the tournament

•  Hampton has lost five of its last six games, including a loss on Saturday against Coppin State.

•  Senior All-MEAC guard Darrion Pellum continues to be one of the top scorers in the league. The senior led the MEAC in the season by averaging 18.1 points and is shooting 36.1 percent from the field and 29.7 percent from 3-point territory. The Hampton, Va. native is also averaging 4.2 rebounds per game and 1.7 assists.

•  Hampton completed the regular season ranked No. 7 in the MEAC averaging 38.2 rebounds per game, and ranked No. 3 in the league in offensive rebounds (36.9/g).

Morgan State finished the regular season ranked No. 4 in the MEAC in blocked shots by averaging 4.5 blocks per game.

BROOKS RISING
Senior swingman Aric Brooks has been the Bears’ leading scorer over the course of the last several games. The Baltimore product has averaged 13.1 ppg on 52 percent shooting during a seven-game stretch and has scored in double-figures in 6 of the last 7 games, including a career-high 19-point performance at Coppin State on Feb. 22. Brooks is currently averaging 7.9 ppg.

CLOSE CALLS
Morgan State has definitely had its share of close losses this season. Of MSU’s 19 losses, nine have come by four points or less and five have been decided by one point. The average margin of defeat in those games is 2 points. The only win they recorded in a game decided by four points or less was when they defeated Delaware State 73-72 in Dover on Feb. 27. Heading into the MEAC Tournament on Tuesday the Bears are forgetting the frustration and focusing on the confidence that came from those games.

JACKSON RETURNS TO THEFTY WAYS
Nearly all of DeWayne Jackson’s numbers improved this season from last season, with one notable: Steals. Through his first 26 games, Jackson is averaging 1.7 steals per game (No. 4 in the MEAC), up from 1.4 during the 2010-11. He has recorded 118 thefts in his career and collected a career-high 5 steals in the Bears win against Liberty in a Sears Bracketbusters matchup.

•  The Rattlers are 5-7 at home games so far this season, their last home win was against North Carolina A&T on February 6, 2012 dropping 87-77.

•  Junior forward Amin Stevens leads the Rattlers in scoring by averaging 16 point per game. The 6-foot-6 forward also leads the team in shooting percentage (.476) and rebounding rebounding (10.5 rpg).

•  The Rattlers’ scoring offense ranks 6th in the MEAC by averaging 66.3 points per game, conversely they rank No. 11 in scoring defense, limiting teams to 74 points per game.
