No. 5 seed Morgan State (17-14) posted an 82-71 win against No. 8 seed Bethune-Cookman and will face No. 7 seed N.C. A&T on Saturday, March 16 at 5 p.m. in Norfolk Scope Arena in the Finals. The Bears have had unprecedented success in the MEAC Tournament under head coach Todd Bozeman. The Bears have won two titles and appeared in four and have improved its MEAC Tournament record to 14-4 under Bozeman.

January 26, 2013 –  – Senior swingman DeWayne Jackson and redshirt-junior center Ian Chiles led Morgan State to a hard fought 55-52 victory over North Carolina A&T at Corbett Sports Center. Jackson finished with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Ian Chiles posted 14 points and 10 boards. Chiles was 7 for 8 from the field as the Bears post play continued to keep the Bears close, despite a poor perimeter shooting night. Anthony Hubbard, who chipped in 10 points, also scored on a fastbreak layup with 34 seconds left to give Morgan State a 53-52 advantage. The Bears held A&T scoreless in the final moments to improve its record to 6-10 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
The Aggies welcomed back nine veterans, including four starters, from a squad that posted a 12-20 overall record, finished 7th in the MEAC with a 7-9 ledger. Lamont Middleton leads the Aggies averaging 12.2 points and is shooting 37 percent from the field. Adrian Powell is also posting double-figures for A&T by averaging 12.2 points and shooting 34 percent from 3-point range. Austin Witter, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, is the team’s leading rebounder by averaging 7.2 rpg to go along with 6.2 ppg. Head coach Cy Alexander (Catawba ’75) enters his first season as the Aggies head coach and he currently holds a 362-324 record in his 24th year of coaching.

The 6-foot-8 swingman has been a major contributor at Morgan State where he has won a MEAC Championship, played in the NCAA Tournament and has received a number of postseason honors, including MEAC Rookie of the Year. Jackson is the only player in school history to have the combination of over 1,500 points (1,576 – No. 5), 500 rebounds (555 – No. 8), 150 steals (169 – No. 2) and 150 assists (185).

LAST TIME VS. SAVANNAH STATE
January 15, 2013 — Morgan State lost a fierce battle, 78-70, in double overtime.  After an early deficit for MSU, the game was close until the very end, with 11 ties and 15 lead changes. SSU needed a pair of three-pointers by standout guard Preston Blackmon in the last 26 seconds to help send the ballgame into the second OT. Blackmon scored 15 of his game-high 41 points after regulation, setting a SSU school record for points in a Division I game.

The Tigers welcome back 14 veterans, including five starters, from a squad that posted a 21-12 overall record, finished as the MEAC regular season champions with a 14-2 ledger. SSU had a total new look with nine players on this year’s roster consisting of five junior college transfers, four freshmen, and four walk-ons. All-MEAC forward Rashad Hassan leads the Tigers averaging 12.8 points and is shooting 54 percent from the field. All-MEAC guard Preston Blackmon (12.0 ppg) is also averaging double-figures. Head coach Horace Broadnax (Georgetown ’86) enters his 9th season as the Tigers head coach and he currently holds a 104-126 (.452) record.

NORFOLK, Va. – Anthony Hubbard came off the bench to score 16 points and Morgan State pulled away in the second half to defeat South Carolina State 61-52 Monday night in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

Hubbard scored 11 points in a span of just under 7 minutes midway through the first half to rally the fifth-seeded Bears (15-14), who will play Savannah State in a Thursday night quarterfinal.

South Carolina State (6-24) went cold after scoring the game’s first 10 points and leading 32-29 at halftime. The 12th-seeded Bulldogs shot 25.7 percent (8 of 31) in the second half, including 1 of 13 from 3-point range after making 4 of 6 first-half 3-pointers.

DeWayne Jackson scored 12 points for Morgan State to move into fifth place on the Bears’ career scoring list with 1,549 points.

Matthew Hezekiah paced South Carolina State with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior DeWayne Jackson and junior Justin Black of Morgan State University’s men’s basketball team were named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Conference Team.

It was the second time Jackson has been selected to the All-MEAC First-Team, while  Black, who was an All-Rookie member in 2011, was selected to the All-MEAC third team.

Selected and voted on by member coaches of the MEAC and the league’s Sports Information Directors, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players in the MEAC.

Jackson completed the regular season averaging 13.6 points and led the Bears in the theft department by averaging 1.8 steals per game. His 1,537 career points ranks No. 6 in school history and he ranks No. 2 with 167 career steals.

Jackson enters his final MEAC Tournament in the Orange & Blue. The 6-foot-8 senior has been a major contributor at Morgan State where he has won a MEAC Championship, played in the NCAA Tournament and has received a number of postseason honors, including MEAC Rookie of the Year.

Jackson is the only player in school history to have the combination of over 1,500 points (1,537 – No. 7), 500 rebounds (539 – No. 9), 150 steals (167 – No. 2) and 150 assists (175).

Black completed the regular season as one of the top scorers in the conference and led the Bears by averaging 14.3 points per game. The Washington, D.C. native also led the team in assists (3.0 apg) and has 4) and has scored double figures in 22 of 28 games, including 16 of the last 18 contests.

Black, a product of Dunbar HS, has scored 20 or more points seven times this season, including a career-high 23 points at Coppin State on Feb. 9, 2013.

Morgan State enters the MEAC Tournament with the No. 5 overall seed and will face No. 12 seed South Carolina State in the Opening Round on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

NORFOLK, Va. — Coppin State freshman Patrick Cole was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team as selected by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors and announced by the conference on Sunday.

Cole, who earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors three times this season, was third on the Eagles averaging 10.3 points per game. He was second on the team in assists with 67 and tied for second on the team in steals with 36.

He had an explosive start to his Coppin State career as he poured in 25 points in the season-opener against USC, and had 85 points in his first five games in a CSU uniform.

He scored a season-high 29 points in the Eagles overtime victory at Hampton on Jan. 21.

Deron Powers of Hampton was honored as the MEAC Rookie of the Year. Rashid Gaston of Norfolk State, Bruce Beckford of North Carolina A&T and Darryl Palmer of South Carolina State joined Cole and Powers on the MEAC All-Rookie Team.

Coppin State will open play in the MEAC Tournament on Tuesday (March 12) at 4 p.m. against Bethune-Cookman in the Norfolk Scope Arena.

January 12, 2013 — Morgan State entered tonight’s ballgame attempting to snap a five-game losing streak by recording its first victory of the New Year. It was a long time between victories for head coach Todd Bozeman‘s team. In fact, they last won a game beating VMI way back on December 1st.  But tonight, they can put that all behind them. Junior guard Justin Black led the Bears with 17 points as Morgan State (4-8, 1-0) claimed their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory on Saturday. The win improved the Bears to 8-0 record in conference openers under Bozeman.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs welcomed back three veterans from a squad that posted a 5-26 overall record, finished last in the MEAC with a 0-16 ledger. SCSU had a total new look with nine players on this year’s roster consisting of five junior college transfers, four freshmen, and four walk-ons. Junior 6-foot-11 forward Matthew Hezekiah leads the Bulldogs averaging 12.8 points and is shooting 56 percent from the field. Senior guard and team captain Khalif Toombs is also averaging double-figures (12.3 ppg) and leads the league dishing out 5.4 assists per game. Head coach Tim Carter (Kansas ’79) enters his 6th season as the Bulldogs head coach and he currently holds a 69-117 (.370) record.

TOURNAMENT FLASHBACK vs. S.C. STATE
Morgan State pulled off a 68-61 victory against No. 3 seed South Carolina State in the 2010 MEAC Tournament Championship. League player of the year Reggie Holmes added 17 points for the top-seeded Bears (27-9). They shot 53 percent to overcome 20 turnovers and avenged their only regular-season conference loss by becoming the first repeat MEAC champion since Hampton in 2001 and ’02.

Morgan State shot 68 percent (17-25) from the field and hit 3-of-3 3-pointers to help build a 48-35 halftime lead.

The Morgan State Bears have won six of its last seven games and cannot afford to have a let down during the final two games of the season. The Bears dropped UMES 58-45 on Saturday and will put its three-game winning streak on the line when they take on a tough Delaware State squad on Monday night. LAST TIME VS. DSU
February, 18, 2013 — The Morgan State Bears came out early with blazing hot shooting and led by as many as 16-points before Delaware State came from behind to hand MSU a 52-50 loss in Dover. After shooting 12 of 24 from the field in the first half, the Bears were a less than impressive 25 percent (6-24) from the floor. The Hornets also got back in the ballgame by scoring 17 points off of MSU turnovers.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
The Hornets welcome back nine veterans, including four starters, from a squad that posted a 15-14 overall record, finished 3rd in the MEAC with a 12-4 ledger. Tahj Tate leads the Hornets in scoring and assists by averaging 12.7 points and 2.3 assists per game. Marques Oliver (8.6 ppg) leads DSU on the glass averaging 6.7 rpg. While the Hornets absolutely struggles on the offensive end (59.9 ppg) with just one player who’s barely averaging double-figures, they have one of the best defenses in MEAC – limiting opponents to 63 points per game.
Head coach Gregory Jackson (St. Paul’s ’80) enters his 13th season as the Hornets’ head coach and he currently holds a 192-197 (.494) record.

February, 16, 2013 – Justin Black scored 18 points, DeWayne Jackson had 17 points and Morgan State easily handled Maryland-Eastern Shore in an 87-55 rout on Saturday. It was the most points scored by the Bears since posting 91 points against Coppin State on February 22, 2012. MSU also posted their largest margin of victory since handing Coppin State a 29-point loss last week. Ian Chiles finished with 12 points and a career-high six blocked shots for the Bears. Anthony Hubbard had 11 points and Donte Pretlow added 10 points.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
The Hawks welcome back five veterans, including two starters, from a squad that posted a 7-23 overall record, finished 12th in the MEAC with a 4-12 ledger. Kevin Mays leads the Hawks in scoring and rebounding by averaging 14.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Troy Snyder (11.6 ppg) is the only other player averaging double-figures for the Hawks.
