Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 08 October 2009 by Glenn Clark

This e-mail I got from a listener this morning was worth passing along….

“Do you think that with Dez Bryant ineligible now there’s a chance he could slip in the Draft and be available for the Ravens?”

-I talked to some important advisors within Sheila Dixon’s office yesterday; and I think the one important thing I took away from my conversations about the possibility of an MLS team here in Charm City is what it could mean for Baltimore’s potential inclusion in the 2018 U.S. World Cup bid. Having World Cup matches here in Baltimore could mean somewhere in the range of a BILLION dollars, and a soccer stadium/MLS team could go a long way towards proving Baltimore as a viable soccer market.

Talk to you from Owings Mills.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

From everything I’ve gathered, the Jordan Williams situation is not a big deal for the Terps. Certainly it is embarrassing, but it doesn’t appear to be anything that will affect Jordan Williams moving forward on the court. In fact, the charges can possibly be dismissed if Jordan agrees to participate in an anger management program.

I do not know the details of the arrest (nor does anyone else), but from what I could gather in speaking to people yesterday who know about law enforcement, these are usually the types of charges that come from minor incidents where a fight was involved. It shouldn’t reflect on Jordan Williams being some sort of violent character.

With all of that being said, it is NOT okay for a Division 1 athlete to put himself in those types of situations. Jordan Williams is an important part of what is expected to be a renaissance for Gary Williams’ program. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan was suspended for the exhibition game this season (similar to how Greivis Vasquez was last season), but I would find any further punishment unlikely.

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-I hear Drew talking about how the Orioles should be a 70+ win next season, and I can only think to myself “with what players?” Having Chris Tillman and Brian Matusz take a step forward would only solve PART of this organization’s problem.

-Tom Kelly? I guess. Certainly he’s a guy who knows a thing or two about winning, but I think if the Orioles are really committed to winning, they need to go with a younger guy who can grow with the players but already knows about winning. I said before that Bob Melvin would be my guy, and I still think he should be.

-The Ravens WILL have interest in bringing back Prescott Burgess, but I doubt he ends up back in Baltimore. Burgess was let go because the team just didn’t have room for him on the roster anymore. They don’t suddenly have any.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 22 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

I will repeat what I said about Dave Trembley this morning on The Comcast Morning Show with Drew Forrester.

Should the Orioles bring back Dave Trembley? I don’t know.
Will the Orioles bring back Dave Trembley? I think so.
Could Dave Trembley say to the Orioles “Thanks but no thanks”? Yes, absolutely.

Dave Trembley (or ANY OTHER MANAGER for that matter given the current state of the organization) CANNOT go into a season as a lame duck. If a manager wants this group of rag tag players to respect him, he has to have the respect of Peter Angelos and Andy MacPhail. A manager left with young and/or undesirable players will NOT earn the respect of his group if the players know management is only employing him “until the team gets good.”

If Dave Trembley were to be told “we’re bringing you back, and you have to earn it next season”, I wouldn’t blame him if he responded “thanks, but no thanks.”

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 16 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

Internet issues here at 1550 Hart Rd. (my fault, not anyone’s here) this morning kept me from polishing off Crabs and Beer this morning, so I didn’t get to comment on Lisa Horne’s note on FoxSports.com that Maryland & Virginia would be in a bidding war for the services of Jeff Jagodzinski as head coach.

Insane.

Maryland has a succession plan. James Franklin will be the next head coach. Economically, even a 2-10 season couldn’t change such plans. That’s just where they’re at.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 03 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

What happened during Dave Trembley’s press conference last night on MASN really is unacceptable, and DT had every right to act accordingly. Some member of the Orioles’ Public Relations staff should have gone to the hallway in an attempt to quiet the people standing there.

It’s a frustrating season for Dave. Would the Orioles be better with a different manager? Probably not MUCH better….they’re just a bad baseball team. But I understand Dave’s frustration.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 01 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

You know you’re an Orioles fan if…..

….An opposing pitcher is throwing a perfect game, and you’re completely unmoved

….You’ve braved hostile crowds, name calling, battery throwing, and obscenity chanting from opposing fans……..to enjoy a game at Camden Yards

….You used to enjoy a drink while watching a game, but now the drinks have become a necessity to stomach the game

….At least 15 times a year there’s someone in your team’s starting lineup that you can honestly admit you’ve never heard of

….Your child’s Little League team regularly makes more significant offseason additions than your favorite Major League baseball team

….you’ve looked at the TV, the other had more than 225 runs, and you thought “Yeah, that’s about right.”

….Every Spring Training, “if” becomes your new favorite word (CB in Northeast)

….Your car’s MPG is lower than your favorite pitcher’s ERA (Christopher Edwards)

….You’ve ever paid money to go to a Major League Baseball game and your Designated Hitter bunted (John in Towson)

….“Cash for Clunkers” represents your team’s offseason free agent acquisitions (Tim in Overlea)

….Your favorite team’s colors are black, orange, and shame (Alex Thomas)

….When you hear that “no lead is safe”, you understand that TRULY, no lead is safe (Erienne)

….You miss Aubrey Huff (texter “5750”)

….You still respect Rick Dempsey (Mark in Nottingham)

….when “Orioles Magic” is still something that happens….but only to your wallet (Brandon in Abingdon)

….a 4th place finish sounds fantastic (Ken Phillips)

….you’re not sure if you should be proud or embarrassed when your favorite team adds “Baltimore” to the front of their away uniforms (Intern Jack)

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 27 August 2009 by Glenn Clark

At this point, I’d say Terrell Suggs’ injury is a concern. The guys aren’t at Training Camp anymore; they’re back in their own beds and at the castle in Westminster, so there’s no reason for Sizzle to be trying to get out of practice at this point.

I’d be concerned. And “monitoring.”

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 26 August 2009 by Glenn Clark

The “Matt Stover factor” is overrated. The Ravens are committed to having one of these guys kick against the Chiefs on September 13.

Matt Stover might well end up kicking again later this season. But it will come only if the Hauschka-Gano winner (likely Hauschka at this point) gets hurt or proves incapable of kicking.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 25 August 2009 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: WNBA-Washington Mystics vs. Minnesota Lynx (Sunday 4pm Verizon Center), CONCACAF Champions League: DC United vs. Toluca (Wednesday 8pm from RFK Stadium live on Fox Soccer Channel), Boxing: Juan Urango vs. Randall Bailey (Friday 9pm from Hollywood, FL live on ESPN2)

10-Black Crowes (Sunday 7pm Rams Head Live), The Killers (Monday 6pm Merriweather Post Pavilion), Kenny Chesney (Saturday 7pm Nissan Pavilion)

Frankly, there might not be a better time than Kenny Chesney Saturday night. I say that because despite the fact that Nissan is somewhere between DC and FREAKING IRAQ; there will be 15,000 screaming girls in the house. I think I could stomach sitting in the parking lot for those odds. Plus, many of them will probably be dressed like this…..

cowgirl

BUT, the better SHOW will almost certainly be one of the other two. I submit Subject A from a previous Black Crowes show at Rams Head:

And Subject B would be Mr. Brandon Flowers’ opus:

9-Maryland State Fair Opens (Friday Timonium State Fairgrounds)

I plan on eating ALL of these before Labor Day…….

turkeylegs

Oh, and about 12-14 of these……

8-WWE: Rise and Fall of WCW DVD in stores (Tuesday), Wrestlemania 25 Network premiere (Saturday 9pm NBC)

Do you understand how difficult it was for me during my childhood to deal with the fact that Hulk Hogan went to the dark side???

nwo

Vince McMahon has done a hell of a job of trying to make us forget about the few good things WCW and ECW did; but I will NEVER forget the day I learned about the evils of the nWo.

(Editor’s note: This DVD should actually be pretty good. The “Monday Night Wars” DVD was really good, and the “Rise and Fall of ECW” DVD was good too. They can’t screw everything up.)

7-NASCAR Pep Boys Auto 500 (Sunday 7pm from Atlanta live on ESPN), IRL Peak Antifreeze & Motor Oil Indy 300 (Saturday 9pm from Chicago live on VERSUS)

Apparently Tony Stewart is leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points race. I’d offer some sort of analysis here; but that’s pretty much all I’ve got.

I wonder if Stewart’s fans chant the same thing my roommate always did freshman year of college….

“LET’S GO SMOKE! LET’S GO SMOKE! LET’S GO SMOKE!”

6-Maryland Football Scrimmage (Thursday 5:25pm Byrd Stadium)

Glenn-do you have any video of a handsome, well-respected journalist talking to a Terrapins defensive lineman about how he spent his summer vacation?

Also, I feel as though I am going to need to start some sort of Caleb Porzel campaign-you know, like the “Matt Wieters Facts” or “Strasburg is Good” campaigns we’ve seen recently. Maybe “Porzel > Tomlinson” or “Porzel > Kobe” or something like that.

5-Horse Racing: Shadwell Travers Stakes (Saturday 4:30pm from Saratoga live on ESPN)

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is scheduled to be back in action Saturday; which means somewhere right now Calvin Borel is probably yelling.

Or course, Calvin Borel regularly is yelling no matter what horse is in action where; so I guess that’s not really a relevant statement to make.

For absolutely no reason at all, here’s a video of small children yelling. I didn’t say it was an interesting video, or a funny video, or even a video that has some level of significance somehow. I just said it was a video. I have lived up to my end of the bargain…

4-Golf: FedEx Cup Playoffs-The Barclays (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 3pm live on CBS. All “playoff” action live from Jersey City, NJ), LPGA Safeway Classic (Friday 4pm & Saturday 5pm live on ESPN2; Sunday 4pm live on ESPN. All action from North Plains, OR), Champions Tour Boeing Classic (Friday & Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from Snoqualmie, WA live on Golf Channel)

The golf playoffs are exactly like the playoffs in every other sport. Expect for the fact that some people care about the playoffs in every other sport.

And with the Champions Tour headed to Snoqualmie; I felt inspired to find a list of The Worst City Names in the world. Thanks to blog site “The Best Things in Life“….

I was trying to think about how to come up with a punch line that involved me hanging out in Brooklyn during the Open to stalk Andy Roddick-and then talk about Andy Roddick hanging out in Brooklyn, but then referencing his wife Brooklyn Decker.

I was thinking about it for like 20 minutes, but then I remembered that all you guys really wanted was for me to post a picture of Brooklyn Decker. Sometimes I think too much.

2-Ravens @ Panthers (Saturday 8pm from Charlotte live on WBAL11 & MASN)

For some reason, I don’t get to make the trip to North Carolina for this game. I wouldn’t be that angry about missing a preseason NFL game regularly; but……..most trips aren’t to places in the country that feature Bojangles…..

bojangles

And just in case you forgot, here’s a BoBerry biscuit….

So have fun in NC, rest of the media covering the Ravens. I’d rather be having strawberry jelly and crunchy peanut butter sandwiches anyway!

1-UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira (Saturday 10pm from Portland live on Pay-Per-View)

After Randy Couture kicks Minotauro’s ass Saturday night, it is NOT my opinion that he should get another shot at Brock Lesnar. Instead, I believe he should face someone a little closer to his age. At UFC 109, I believe it is time for us to see the ultimate showdown: Couture vs……….ROURKE……
