Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 30 March 2009 by Glenn Clark

I’m okay with the idea that Baltimore fans should be “over” the Colts moving to Indianapolis. We have a team (a GREAT team), a new stadium (a GREAT stadium), and a new history to continue for years to come. I really am okay with the idea that those factors should lead Maryland fans to have gotten “over” the Colts leaving. Kind of.can’t believe 25 years have passed since Colts left town

First of all; there is NO getting over the feelings that happened 25 years ago for Colts fans. The empty feeling will never be forgotten; and those emotions have to be respected. If someone says, “I can’t forgive the Colts”; that should be understood. Frankly, I don’t think I’ll ever feel good for the Colts; nor do I want them to have any level of success. I know they won a Super Bowl; but I hope they never do again.

And if getting “over” the Colts’ departure means being okay with the fact that the history and records of the Colts are now part of Indianapolis folklore; I will then NEVER be “over” the Colts. Forget it. It is an embarrassment that John Unitas is part of Indianapolis Colts history; and is almost unforgiveable.

But that being said; I am not seething today thinking about yesterday’s 25th anniversary of the Colts’ departure. Then again; I was barely alive when they left. But my childhood was certainly loaded with the venom of my friends and family discussing their love for the Colts and their sadness for the move.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 12 March 2009 by Glenn Clark

Maryland 70, NC State 63

There is no doubt in my mind that after the heartbreak of the last 10 days, the Terps could absolutely fall apart tonight. But unless NC State really takes it to the Terps on the boards; I just don’t see it. Then again, maybe I shouldn’t make picks with this team.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 11 March 2009 by Glenn Clark

Two Orioles-related notes I’ve been reading about in recent days….

1- I wanted the Orioles to go get pitching; and Pedro Martinez can possibly pitch. At this point; guys like Rich Hill and Mark Hendrickson might not be in the rotation anyway; so maybe the Birds are just as well going with a combination of Albers, Pauley, and Penn at the end of their rotation. But if Pedro comes here and pitches for a while; the Orioles could be able to move him. I wouldn’t have a problem with them adding him at a reasonable to semi-risk cost.

2-Dumping veterans is ALWAYS a good idea for this team; so if the Yankees would be interested enough if Melvin Mora to make a true offer; they’d have to entertain it. But I LOVE Melvin Mora; and I’m not completely sold on Scott Moore just yet. Maybe keeping Moore up here is a good idea and trying to move Mora in July would be more prudent.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 March 2009 by Glenn Clark

I understand why the Ravens are wary of giving a 35 year old receiver any sort of extension; I really do. But in the case of Derrick Mason, I think they’d do the right thing by adding an extra year to his contract. The Ravens have an issue at wide receiver right now; and they don’t have even as much as ONE wide receiver under contract past this season. I can’t see signing Derrick Mason as the type of thing that breaks the bank; and I don’t think Ozzie has anything to prove by ignoring him.

It really isn’t uncommon for a player going into the final year of his contract to want some more security. Even at 35, it isn’t unreasonable for the player who I believe was this team’s most valuable a season ago to not want to go into the final year of his deal.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 09 March 2009 by Glenn Clark

Thank God for Brenda Frese and her team.

For as upset and downtrodden as we get about the heartbreaks on the men’s side; Brenda’s team continues to give us memories and dazzling performances.

Yesterday’s ACC Championship was as good a basketball game-men or women-as I’ve seen this season. It was hard fought on both ends, with neither team giving up; and both teams doing amazing things to try to will themselves to a title. It was sparkling, it was fun.

Thank God for Brenda and those girls. Hearing the fight song after the Championship game yesterday was emotional again. Maybe not the SAME emotion as when Maryland beat Duke in 2004 on the men’s side; but pretty damn close.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 25 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

Duke 94, Maryland 86

Can lightning strike the same place twice? I don’t think so. If Duke is shooting, there’s nothing Maryland (or anyone else) can do to beat them. Same goes for Carolina, but Carolina wasn’t shooting the other day. I DON’T think Maryland will be blown out again at home; but I don’t think that Duke will be as cold from outside as Carolina was.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

-I get the feeling that ONE of the Ravens’ free agents will sign before Thursday’s deadline. Most likely Bart Scott. They have SO much work to do; I don’t think they’re comfortable going to Friday with all 3 hitting the market. I think they’ll get Bart locked up to breathe a bit easier.

-Delaware 77, Towson 64. I just don’t get the feeling the Tigers are even capable of winning games anymore.

Talk to you tonight with a Maryland-Duke live blog from Comcast Center.

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 23 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

On one side; I agree with Drew. I think it is very likely that Ray Lewis said something to DeMarcus Ware along the lines of “I don’t know what’s gonna happen with all of this; but I might want to be a Cowboy.” DeMarcus Ware might have decided to run with that.

Or maybe Ray Lewis actually told him that he REALLY wanted to be a Cowboy, no matter what.

There are a couple of things to be pointed out…..

1-It is Ray’s fault and ONLY Ray’s fault that he is even in this position. Ray should have come out from Day 1 and said “I want to be in Baltimore; and I hope they want me here.” Had he said that; Ravens fans wouldn’t be NEARLY as up in arms or willing to say “good riddance” to the star linebacker; and might be more apt to defend Ray when hearing stories like DeMarcus Ware’s.

2-I would not be the LEAST bit surprised if the story was true, however. As I said when talking to Ross Tucker of Sports Illustrated last week; I think Ray is MUCH more concerned about being a football icon than he is about being a Baltimore Raven. Ray might very well want to wear the same jersey as he’s seen Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, Terrell Owens, etc. wear. I don’t doubt that for a second.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

-In talking to a few people, I really believe that any combination that gets Maryland to 8-8 in the ACC at this point will probably be enough to get them in. With two wins over top 5 teams (so far); and with the lack of depth in conferences across the country; the Terps would be in very good position to get a bid.

-Morgan State 75, Hampton 65. I just don’t see a stumble between now and the NCAA Tournament for Todd Bozeman’s Bears.
-Coppin State 67, Howard 61. I just don’t see a stumble between now and the MEAC Championship for Fang Mitchell’s Eagles.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 13 February 2009 by Glenn Clark

Virginia Tech 74, Maryland 67

I have a bad feeling this will be another one where the Terps jump out to a 14 point lead but struggle in the 2nd half. They just don’t shoot well enough to finish the games off against better teams.

Drexel 70, Towson 58

Bruiser Flint’s Dragons are just a MUCH better team; amongst the best in the CAA.

UMBC 68, Hartford 60

On the flip side, Randy Monroe’s Retrievers are just a MUCH better team than the Hawks.

Morgan State 78, Florida A&M 65

Once again (is this redundant?), Todd Bozeman’s Bears are just a better team than the Rattlers

Coppin State 64, Bethune-Cookman 57

The Eagles are peaking. Tywain McKee is no longer the only option.

Iona 67, Loyola 62

Midweek Musings

Posted on 04 February 2009 by Mark Suchy

Random thoughts from the local sports scene that are bouncing around the cranium this week…

*  I don’t know about you, but this current Maryland men’s basketball team is probably the most forgettable group ever assembled during Gary Williams’ tenure in College Park.  No inside presence, very little depth, a repeated inability to play cohesive team defense and a lack of a true “go-to” player all add up to the debacles like last night’s in Chapel Hill and the embarrassment in Durham two weekends ago.  For a guard-dominated team, there sure aren’t many good ones on this roster.  In my opinion, Adrian Bowie has to play 30 minutes a game at point guard and settle that position once and for all.  That would allow more freedom off the ball for Greivis Vasquez to come off of screens and play a little closer to the rim (because, Lord knows, he’s just not very good from way outside).  More Sean Mosely can’t hurt either.  But unless and until Braxton Dupree and Dino Gregory contribute much more significantly, this Terps team is doomed to finish with a maximum of 6 ACC wins.  Just look at the remaining schedule and tell me how they can finish the second half of conference play at 6-2 (which is what it will taje to go 9-7 and be a legitmate “bubble” team come NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday).  Wake, Duke, UNC, Clemson and Virginia Tech are all significantly better than Maryland and will assure the Terps another NIT trip.

As for the status of Gary Williams, it appears he will at least get another year to straighten out the current problems in the program.  At least as it regards recruiting, this is a positive development.  Any appearance of internal conflict could easily chase away potential Terps, no matter how highly or lowly regarded they may be.  And right now, this program needs all the talent it can possibly unearth.

*  So Ty Wigginton is a Baltimore Oriole?  I guess I’ll upgrade from that 13 game plan to a 29 game plan now.  I mean really.  How much more of this type of mediocrity are all lifelong Oriole fans supposed to swallow?  I understand that every major league team needs depth and versatility for the rigors of a six month season, but exactly how does having Wigginton fit in?  Is this a preliminary move that clears the way later this year to trade Melvin Mora (assuming he waives his no-trade clause, which I would imagine he’d be happy to do by mid-July when they’re 22 games out) or even, perhaps, Brian Roberts?  There simply appears to be an overabundance of utility players on this current roster.  Wigginton, Chris Gomez, Ryan Freel.  Awfully inspiring.

*  Speaking of the Orioles, I brought this up on-air the other day while filling in for Nestor.  Why wouldn’t the team have any interest in Manny Ramirez?  I know the answer already ($$$$), but why wouldn’t you at least explore something along the lines of two years?  He could be the everyday DH, hit a ton in Camden Yards, stick it to Boston and New York 38 times a year, and show some of the younger players how to be a complete major league hitter.  And don’t give me the argument about Manny taking away at-bats from Felix Pie or Luke Scott.  Really, who cares?  If you’re telling me that people wouldn’t be much more inclined to go see the Orioles on a Tuesday night in June against Seattle because Manny’s in the lineup, I’d tell you you’re lying.  The guy is the best right-handed hitter available, a certain Hall of Famer and a draw.  Oh, right, I forgot, who cares about selling tickets when MASN is lining the hallways of the Warehouse with cash.  Silly me.

*  Money, money, money.  We’ll be hearing plenty of talk about it over the next month as the Ravens map out their future with the pending free agents.  My guess is that Ray Lewis has played his final game as a Raven; he will simply take the highest offer, and the Ravens will choose not to match.  The two most critical pieces to retain are Terrell Suggs and Jason Brown.  After that, it will be “right player, right price” as the team rebuilds for ’09.  And every one of us that cares about the team should not go insane about any of the moves this front office makes until the season is played.  As I recall, there was an awful lot of yammering and Ozzie bashing last April, May, etc. about his draft manueverings and picks, free agents, trades, etc.  Be patient, everyone, and give this entire front office a little credit as the off-season plays out.  More often than not, the moves work.  Which is the most critical reason behind the franchise’s success over the past decade.

*  Early Final Four hunch: Duke, Marquette, UConn, Michigan State

Wigginton’s signing is a good one for the O’s

Posted on 03 February 2009 by Drew Forrester

It might have jammed up the team’s “utility-man-infrastracture” but today’s signing of Ty Wigginton is a good addition by the Orioles.

He’s better than Kevin Millar.  He’s better than Chris Gomez. And, he’s better than Ryan Freel.

Personally, I think, he’ll be the O’s everyday third baseman in lieu of Melvin Mora by July 4th.

Look, he’s not A-Rod.  Ty Wigginton is a journeyman.  But he’s a good journeyman.

That’s been my debate about their pitching additions this off-season.  They passed on GOOD pitchers like Jon Garland, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe and, likely, Ben Sheets, who is still out there for the taking but evidently not better than, say, Rich Hill, Mark Hendrickson or a Japanese pitcher who has the same major league ERA as I do.

However, as unnecessary as the Hendrickson signing was, the Wigginton signing is beneficial.

He’s a GOOD journeyman.  You need one or two of those along the way to patch up the holes and give you some consistency in the dog days of August when, in the O’s case, you’re 25 games out of first place and the games don’t matter anymore.  ”Someone” has to play in those games.

The Wigginton addition also potentially paves the way for a spring training trade of either Brian Roberts, Luke Scott, or both.  They’ve tried to sign Roberts over the winter but he’s heard “the story” one too many times from the O’s – “we’re gettin’ better, hang in there with us” – and is begging for a transfer, as Private Santiago did in “A Few Good Men”.  Scott is a decent-enough-hitter but not a gold glove candidate…and with Pie’s arrival from Chicago – and Freel and Wigginton both able to play left field – the O’s could also part company with Luuuukkkke if they could pull off a reasonable deal.

On the whole, It’s been an off-season filled with low-budget, “take a chance on me” type of player signings and acquisitions and Wigginton probably fits that criteria…but he’s a career .270 hitter and a capable defensive player and he’s only 31.  He can still play.  His history shows that.  He’s not a gamble, unlike a Rich Hill, Brad Hennessey or David Pauley.  Best of all, he’s actually coming to the O’s on the heels of a decent season in Houston, unlike some of their other off-season reaches like Hill, who, for example, pitched in 5 games a year ago before he was shut-down by the Cubs.

It does create a possible logjam in the part-time player category, as Freel, Gomez and Wigginton are nearly identical images of each other.  Freel plays more outfield than the other two.  Gomez is the only one who can play shortstop – or has in the past – and Wigginton’s best position is probably third base.  But, in general, all three are fill-in types and that might be one more part-timer than the O’s really need.  Make no mistake about it, though, if you’re ranking the three, Wigginton is the best of the trio.

I like this signing.

It feels good to say (write) that.

I must be getting soft.
