Winners in five of its last six games played to climb above .500 in conference play, Morgan State will host Md-Eastern Shore in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Bears, one of the hottest teams in the MEAC, will enter the contest coming off an 86-68 home win against Coppin State. Sophomore guard Blake Bozeman led the way with a career-high 16 points and eight assists. UMES suffered a 49-45 loss at Howard, dropping its ninth game in 10 outings. Dominique Cowell and Louis Bell paced the Hawks with 14 points apiece.

LAST TIME VS. UMES
February, 16, 2013 – Justin Black scored 18 points, DeWayne Jackson had 17 points and Morgan State easily handled Maryland-Eastern Shore in an 87-55 rout on Saturday. It was the most points scored by the Bears since posting 91 points against Coppin State on February 22, 2012. MSU also posted their largest margin of victory since handing Coppin State a 29-point loss last week. Ian Chiles finished with 12 points and a career-high six blocked shots for the Bears. Anthony Hubbard had 11 points and Donte Pretlow added 10 points.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
The Hawks welcome back five veterans, including two starters, from a squad that posted a 7-23 overall record, finished 12th in the MEAC with a 4-12 ledger. Kevin Mays leads the Hawks in scoring and rebounding by averaging 14.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Troy Snyder (11.6 ppg) is the only other player averaging double-figures for the Hawks. Head coach Frankie Allen (Roanoke College ’71) enters his fifth season as the Hawks’ head coach and he currently holds a 34-95 (.269) record.

Jackson is one of three Bears on MSU’s all-time scoring list who have been coached by Todd Bozeman. Kevin Thompson(2009-12) ranks No. 9 (1,487 points) and Reggie Holmes (2007-10) is the school’s all-time scoring leader with 2,051 points.

February, 9, 2013 — Junior guard Justin Black had a career-high 23 points with six assists to help lift the Bears to 80-51 win at the Physical Education Complex.  The victory snapped the Bears’ 3-game losing streak, and handed Coppin State its fifth consecutive loss. Morgan State held a 14-9 lead (14:39) before stepping on the accelerator.  The Bears took complete control of the game by outscoring the Eagles 30-7, punctuated by a three-pointer by Black at the buzzer to give the Bears a 46-18 halftime lead.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season title may be out of reach for Morgan State, but despite being out of the race Coach Todd Bozeman‘s team appears to be improving and gaining momentum. The Bears have won 4 of its last five games and will finish the regular season with four games against teams with a combined record of 27-76 (.262).  With top teams like Norfolk State, N.C. Central and Savannah State drawing the majority of the attention, it’s easy to see how the Bears can be lost under the radar with a record of 10-14. Morgan State will certainly be a team to watch as we draw closer to the 2013 MEAC Tournament.

The Bears extended to a three-game winning streak following an 87-55 drubbing of the Md.-Eastern Shore Hawks Saturday night at the Hytche Athletic Center. Justin Black led MSU with with 18 points and DeWayne Jackson added 17. Delaware State defeated Coppin State 57-43 at Memorial Hall on Saturday. Tahj Tate paced the Hornets with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. The meeting with Delaware State  will be the 89th all-time between the schools, with the Bears leading the head-to-head series, 49-39.

February, 28, 2012 – Ian Chiles broke a 70-70 tie from the free throw line where he made 1 of 2 with 21 seconds left to go. But on the ensuing inbounds, Hornets point guard Jay Threat raced the length of the court, missed a contested layup, only to have it followed up by a dunk by Tahj Tate as fans and his teammates ran on to the court in jubilation. However, 1.1 seconds remained on the clock and in the confusion the officials huddled and decided to access a technical against Delaware State for delay of game. Aric Brooks, Morgan State’s best free throw shooter (.787 pct.), toed the line and hit both free throws as fans stood questioning what had just occurred. The Bears left Memorial Hall with a 73-72 victory.

February, 25, 2012 – Justin Black grabbed a long rebound and raced coast to coast for a layup and was fouled by Mark Robertson with 11.7 seconds left. Black’s free throw gave the Bears a 57-56 lead.  On the ensuing possession, Woods penetrated the lane and was fouled with 8.9 second remaining. Woods stepped up and hit both free throws to help seal a 58-57 win. MSU’s last shot attempt by Black ended up rimming out as UMES fans flooded the floor in excitement. It was the first time since the 2001-02 season the Bears have been swept by MD-Eastern Shore.  Mark Robertson scored a career-high 22 points, including 7 of 13 3-pointers, to lead the Hawks.

The Hawks welcome back five veterans, including two starters, from a squad that posted a 7-23 overall record, finished 12th in the MEAC with a 4-12 ledger. Morgan State mounted a furious second-half late rally, but it came up just short in a 73-71 setback to Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. The Bears fell to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while the Spartans won for the fifth-straight game to improve to 11-10 and a 6-0 mark in league play.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans welcome back 11 veterans, including one starter, from a squad that posted a 26-10 overall record, finished 2nd in the MEAC with a 13-3 ledger and were the MEAC Tournament Champs. The Spartans made a historic run in the Big Dance before falling to the Florida Gators in Third Round of the Tournament. Pendarvis Williams leads the Spartans averaging 13.7 points and is shooting 36 percent from 3-point territory. JACKSON DOING A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING 
Senior DeWayne Jackson is filling the stat sheet this season, averaging 14.8 points (ranked No. 5), 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals (ranked No. 2) per game. Jackson has also registered 12 blocks. He has recorded 15 double-digit scoring games, including a season-high 32-point effort at Virginia (Dec. 19).

CONTROLLING THE GLASS
The Bears have only out-rebounded 6 of their first 16 opponents so far this season. In fact, the Bears have gone 5-1 in the games in which they’ve won the battle on the boards. MSU’s best rebounding performance was during its season-opening win against UTSA where they held a 52-26 advantage on the glass.

Morgan State (5-10, 2-2) will travel south for a MEAC matchup against the North Carolina A&T Aggies in Greensboro, N.C. The Bears will enter the game coming off of a 73-71 loss at Norfolk State. Justin Black led the Bears with 16 points and eight rebounds. North Carolina A&T (9-10, 2-2) picked up their second straight win on Jan. 19th, beating Howard 61-37 at Corbett Sports Center. Adrian Powell led A&T with 23 points and seven rebounds. The Aggies will host Morgan State following a week of rest. The meeting with N.C. A&T will be the 82nd all-time between the schools, with the Aggies leading the head-to-head series, 48-33.

• DeWayne Jackson is ranked among the top theft artists in school history. Jackson has collected 151 steals with the Bears and currently ranks No. 5 (T-No. 15 in the nation). The school record for career steals is held by Terrence Wright (1992-96) with 186 career steals … Jackson is 41 steals away from becoming the school’s new leader.

• Shaquille Duncan leads the Bears in blocked shots. The sophomore ranks No. 4 (36) in the MEAC by averaging 2.4 blocks per game.

• The combination of DeWayne Jackson, Anthony Hubbard and Justin Black have provided almost 60 percent of the scoring for the Bears so far this season.

• The Bears’ first 10 games of the 2012-13 season were on the road where they finished 3-7.

LAST TIME OUT VS. NORTH CAROLINA A&T
January 21, 2012 –  Adrian Powell made a layup with 15 seconds left and North Carolina A&T held on to beat the Bears 62-61 at Hill Field House. Morgan State (4-12, 2-3) then missed two potential game-winners in the final 14 seconds as Blake Bozeman came up short on a layup and Ian Chiles on a jumper with 2 seconds remaining The Aggies forced 19 turnovers by the Bears, who had their head coach on the sidelines for the first time in four games.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
The Aggies welcome back nine veterans, including four starters, from a squad that posted a 12-20 overall record, finished 7th in the MEAC with a 7-9 ledger. Lamont Middleton leads the Aggies averaging 13.1 points and is shooting 40 percent from the field. Adrian Powell (12.7 ppg) and Jean Louisme (10.4 ppg) are also posting double-figures for A&T. Austin Witter is the team’s leading rebounder by averaging 6.6 rpg to go along with 6.2 ppg. Head coach Cy Alexander (Catawba ’75) enters his first season as the Aggies head coach and he currently holds a 353-319 (.525) record in his 24th year of coaching.

MORGAN STATE TABBED THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL
Morgan State was picked to finish third in the 2012-13 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball preseason poll behind Savannah State and Delaware State.

UNFAMILIAR FOES
Morgan State will face six teams this season that the program has never met in its basketball history. The first time opponents are: UTSA, Old Dominion, Holy Cross, South Carolina, Illinois State and San Diego. The Bears do not see a familiar foe until the Nov. 29 matchup at Liberty (MSU leads, 1-0), their fifth game of the season. The other five opponents MSU previously has played are University of Virginia (trails, 0-1), Loyola Marymount (leads, 2-0), and Saint Joseph’s (trails, 0-1).

JACKSON SET TO LEAD
DeWayne Jackson is the lone returning senior who saw action for Morgan State last year. There are seven (7) juniors, four (4) sophomores and two (2) freshmen on the Bears roster.

RECOVERING THE SWAG
The Bears will look to rebound from last year’s dismal season in which the Bears recorded a 9-20 finish. It marked Todd Bozeman‘s worst season as a head coach, and it was Morgan State’s worst season since going 4-26 in 2005-06.

DeWayne Jackson (1,378, 460 rebs., 150 asts) needs 13 points to surpass Lee Cornish (1,390 points – 1963-66) to become the school’s No. 11 all-time leading scorer. Jackson is one of three Bears on MSU’s all-time scoring list who have been coached by Todd Bozeman. Kevin Thompson(2009-12) ranks No. 9 (1,487 points) and Reggie Holmes (2007-10) is the school’s all-time scoring leader with 2,051 points.

HOME GROWN
Morgan State has eight players from the Metropolitan-D.C. area, including one from Baltimore. Senior DeWayne Jackson (Bowie High) and sophomore Blake Bozeman (Solebury Prep) are both from Bowie. Transfer guard Daryl Traynham is from Melwood (Wise High), walk-on Daon Riley is from Severn (Old Mill High), and Cedric Blossom is from Columbia (Montrose Christian). Anthony Hubbard is a product of Woodbridge (Va.), while junior Justin Black attended DeMatha High and Donte Pretlow was a standout at Dunbar High in Baltimore.

BOZEMAN WIN PERCENTAGE AT MSU
Todd Bozeman, now in his seventh season as head coach of the Bears, has an overall win percentage of .550 (116-95) after 211 games at Morgan State. That winning mean is the second highest among 15 head coaches in the history of the Morgan State men’s basketball program. Nathaniel Frazier’s winning percentage of .578 (166-121) is the highest percentage in Morgan State history.
