No band has greater benefitted from car rentals than Rusted Root. (If you don’t already get it, you will.)

Dropkick Murphys are coming. Let this be a reminder that we’re only days from St. Patrick’s Day.

Recently Scott Weiland was fired by Stone Temple Pilots. It was uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as the meeting his solo project Scott Weiland had the same day where the need to fire Scott Weiland was also discussed…

9. Tom Arnold (Friday & Saturday Baltimore Comedy Factory); Wreck-It Ralph” available on Blu-Ray/DVD (Tuesday); “Oz The Great And Powerful” out in theaters (Friday); Baltimore St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Sunday 2pm Downtown Baltimore)

With all due respect to Tom Arnold, I’d rather be seeing Chris Farley AS Tom Arnold…

And I like this pre-St. Patty’s Day St. Patty’s Day. So here’s this.

Hopkins eyes bounce back Tuesday against Mt. St. Mary’s

Posted on 04 March 2013 by WNST Staff

The Game: Johns Hopkins plays its only midweek game of the 2013 season as the Blue Jays (3-1) welcome Mount St. Mary’s (2-3) to Homewood Field for the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams.

A Look Back: Johns Hopkins suffered its first loss of the 2013 season last Friday night at home as 12th-ranked Princeton left Homewood with an 11-8 win to its credit. Mount St. Mary’s dropped its second straight last Saturday night as the Mount fell to Towson, 13-5.

Series History: Johns Hopkins and Mount St. Mary’s are meeting for the fifth time in a series that dates to a 19-6 Johns Hopkins win in 2006. The Blue Jays have won all four meetings, including a 12-5 victory in the most recent matchup in 2009.

These are the Facts: Johns Hopkins enters this week’s game against Mount St. Mary’s with an all-time record of 927-299-15 (.753). The Blue Jays own nine NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 44 national championships.

State Rivalries: Without question the Blue Jays play one of the most difficult schedules in the nation and a big part of the schedule are the in-state rivalries the Blue Jays have. Including the win earlier this season against Towson, JHU is 57-7 (.891) against teams from Maryland under head coach Dave Pietramala. Below is a breakdown of JHU’s record against teams from the state of Maryland under Pietramala.

Loyola (12-0)
Maryland (8-5)
Mount St. Mary’s (4-0)
Navy (11-2)
Towson (14-0)
UMBC (8-0)

That’s 101 Games Over .500: Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala picked up his 164th career win with the recent win over Michigan and he now stands at 164-63 overall. Included in that mark is a 141-46 record at JHU and a 23-17 record in three seasons as the head coach at Cornell.
Pietramala ranks second all-time in school history in career coaching victories as only Hall of Fame coach Bob Scott (158 wins from 1955-74) has more victories than Pietramala while patrolling the sidelines at Homewood.

Quick Starts: Johns Hopkins has been especially strong in the first and third quarter of its four games this season. The Blue Jays have outscored the opposition 18-5 in the first quarter and 14-6 in the third. By contrast, JHU holds a slim scoring margin in the fourth quarter (11-10) and has been outscored 9-8 in the second quarter.

Balancing Act: Johns Hopkins counts seven players with four or more goals and nine players with four or more points through four games. In all, 13 different players have found the back of the net for JHU and 17 players have at least one point.

Among the Leaders: The NCAA issued its second national statistical report this week and Johns Hopkins is well represented among the national leaders. JHU ranks in the top 15 in the nation in eight different team categories and eight individual categories.
Below is a look at JHU’s top-15 statistical national rankings

Team Categories:
Faceoff Win Percentage (1st • .734)
Assists Per/Game (4th • 8.5)
Scoring Margin (5th • +5.25)
Points Per/Game (7th • 21.5)
Scoring Offense (8th • 13.0)
Scoring Defense (11th • 7.75)
Winning Percentage (12th • .750)
Extra-Man Offense (12th • .471)

Poppleton Strong at the X: Senior Mike Poppleton enjoyed one of the great individual games by a Johns Hopkins faceoff specialist in the recent win over Michigan.
Poppleton won all 14 faceoffs he took in the first half and finished with a 17-of-18 (.944) showing to go along with 12 ground balls. The 17 wins are the second-highest total of his career.
Including a 15-of-22 showing against Princeton, Poppleton has won 55-of-72 (.764) faceoffs through four games and has a team-high 31 ground balls to his credit. He currently first the nation in faceoff winning percentage and 10th in ground balls per game (7.75).

Benn Notches Fourth Straight Hat Trick: Junior Brandon Benn scored a game-high four goals against Princeton to run his season totals to 14 goals and one assist for 15 points. He leads the team in goals and points through four games.
Benn has notched at least three goals in all four games this season and ranks fifth in the nation in goals per game (3.5). He is the first Johns Hopkins player to record four straight hat tricks since 2004, when Conor Fordhad five in a row late in the season.

What Brown Does For Us: Freshman Ryan Brown has stepped in and made an immediate impact for the Blue Jays. Brown has four goals and two assists through four games and leads the team with three extra-man goals. He scored two goals and added an assist in the win last week against Michigan and scored in the first three games before being shutout against Princeton.

Sanders Breaks Through: Junior midfielder Rex Sanders entered the 2013 season with one career goal to his credit. He has already surpassed that total as he has scored five goals through four games. Sanders is tied for second on the team in goals (5) and ranks seventh in points (5).

Bassett Solid Through Four: Senior Pierce Bassett hails from Arizona, but the chill of the early season in Baltimore hasn’t slowed him as he currently boasts a .594 save percentage and a 7.61 goals against average. He ranks 12th in the nation in goals against average and 10th in save percentage. He enters this week just four saves shy of 400 for his career. Only nine Johns Hopkins goalies in school history have amassed 400 or more saves.

Durkin Fuels Defense: Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala has the luxury of returning the nation’s top defensive player in senior co-captain Tucker Durkin, who has picked up right where he left off a year ago.
Durkin currently ranks third on the team in ground balls (11) and leads the team with eight caused turnovers. Durkin counts more than one-third of JHU’s total caused turnovers (22) to his credit and is the anchor of a Johns Hopkins defense that ranks 11th nationally in scoring defense (7.75).

Scoring Droughts Abound: Despite the new rules in place this season that aim to quicken the pace (and thus increasing scoring), the Johns Hopkins defense has been able to hold the opposition scoreless for long stretches.
Siena, Towson and Michigan each drew blanks of at least 15 minutes and all three had two droughts that lasted at least 13 minutes. Princeton was more productive in its win against JHU, but did have one scoring drought that covered more than 11 minutes.

Opponent Scoring Droughts in 2013
Siena (14:43 • 17:03)
Towson (16:40 • 26:59)
Michigan (15:22 • 13:03)
Princeton (11:11)

I’m Honored: The Blue Jays return four players who earned All-America honors last season in seniors Tucker Durkin, Pierce Bassett and John Ranagan and junior Rob Guida. Durkin earned First Team All-America honors on defense, while Ranagan and Guida grabbed second team honors at midfield. Bassett earned honorable mention honors in goal and he, Durkin and Ranagan are two-time All-America selections for the Blue Jays.

Odd, But True: Years ending in “3” have been kind, and unkind, to the Blue Jays. Since the formation of the NCAA Tournament in 1971, Johns Hopkins has advanced to the NCAA Championship game three times (1973, 1983, 2003) and the NCAA Semifinals once (1993) in the years ending in three. JHU fell in each of those three title games with the three loses coming by a total of four goals. In each of those instances the Blue Jays subsequently won a national championship within two years.

Did You Know That …
… Pierce Bassett ranks 10th in school history with 396 saves and sports a 28-8 record in his last 36 starts?

… Brandon Benn has scored at least one goal in 19 of 20 games since the start of the 2012 season and has 12 multi-goal games to his credit during that time? In addition, his four straight hat tricks are the most consecutive by a JHU player since 2004, when Conor Ford had five in a row.

… Tucker Durkin became the first JHU junior to win the William C. Schmeisser Award as the nation’s top defenseman since Dave Pietramala in 1988.

… Zach Palmer totaled 27 goals and 26 assists last season to become just the eighth JHU player since 1980 with 25 goals and assists in the same season.

… Rex Sanders scored twice in the win over Siena, once against Towson and twice more against Michigan. Prior to this, Sanders had scored one goal in six career games played.

Representing the Stars and Stripes – Part I: Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala will serve as an assistant coach for the United States at at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships in Denver Colorado. Pietramala will serve under Richie Meade, the head coach at Navy from 1995-2011.

Representing the Stars and Stripes – Part II: Johns Hopkins sophomore defender Rob Enright was a member of the United States Team that won the 2012 FIL U-19 World Championship in Turku, Finland. Enright is the 17th Johns Hopkins player to represent the United States at the U-19 Championships since the formation of the event in 1988.

Working Overtime: The Blue Jays have won their last three overtime games dating back to the 2011 season and are 19-9 all-time in overtime under head coach Dave Pietramala.

Streaking: In case you didn’t notice, Johns Hopkins is 23-6 in its last 29 games and 28-8 since the start of the 2011 season.

Poll Position: The Blue Jays are ranked sixth in this week’s USILA Coaches Poll and sixth in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll as well. The Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications Office uses the USILA Poll to represent JHU’s official ranking at the time of a game. Prior to falling out of the top 20 of the USILA Poll on April 26 and May 3, 2010 (JHU was receiving votes in both polls), the Blue Jays had been ranked in the top 20 in 367 consecutive polls dating back to the first poll in 1973.

More Poll Position: Including this week’s USILA Poll, there have been 400 weekly polls since the inception of the poll in 1973. Amazingly, JHU has been ranked in the top 20 in 398 of those 400 polls. The Blue Jays have been in the top 10 in 377 of the 400 and the top five in 298 of those 400. Johns Hopkins has been ranked number one 104 times since the poll debuted in 1973.

Palmer in Rare Company: Senior attackman Zach Palmer led Johns Hopkins in scoring with 27 goals and 26 assists for 53 points last season. With that effort, Palmer became the first player at Johns Hopkins with 25 goals and 25 assists in the same season since 2007, when Paul Rabil totaled 27 goals and 26 assists. The 25-25 feat is rare at Johns Hopkins as Palmer is just the eighth Blue Jay to reach this mark since 1980 (the eight have turned the trick a combined 13 times). Palmer Among Career Active Assists Leaders: Senior attackman Zach Palmer notched two assists against Princeton to run his career assist total to 65. He is currently tied for eighth among all active Division I players in career assists.

There was a time when I didn’t know if new Civil Wars music was coming. This is one of the better Tuesdays of my life.

Can’t think of a bigger no-brainer than Mumford & Sons’ “Babel” having won Album of the Year at the Grammys. In fact it was such a no-brainer I was certain it would be messed up…

The name Tim Reynolds doesn’t jump out at you? Maybe this will help.

I honestly dig Little Big Town a lot. But nothing they’ve done has ever topped their debut…

The virginmarys were the last really cool band I heard in 2012. I will need this record.

As you know, my Valentine’s Day plans don’t change much from year to year, even if I’m now celebrating as a soon-to-be married man. I put on a little D’Angelo, grab some massage oil and then head DIRECTLY to this…

It’s called “romance”, kids. Get in on it.

Faust Restores Swagger, Makes Key Contribution in Maryland Win

Faust Restores Swagger, Makes Key Contribution in Maryland Win

Posted on 07 December 2011 by Glenn Clark

COLLEGE PARK — After Maryland’s November 29 loss to Illinois in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon expressed concern about freshman guard Nick Faust (City College).

“He’s lost his confidence” Turgeon said. “Nick needs to get his swagger back.”

After a three point, three turnover, zero assist performance days later in the Terrapins’ 78-71 BB&T Classic win over Notre Dame, concerns lingered about the team’s prize recruit out of Baltimore. A wing in high school, Faust was struggling mightily with a switch to point guard before the start of the season.

The concerns were significant enough that Turgeon felt the need to meet with Faust Tuesday, one day before the Terps would meet Mt. St. Mary’s at Comcast Center.

“I talked to him and told him his offense can’t affect the rest of his game” Turgeon said Wednesday night. “He has to rebound and make guys around him better.”

The result of the conversation? A 13 point, six rebound, five assist performance (and two key blocks down the stretch) as Maryland (5-3) hung on for a 77-74 win over Mt. St. Mary’s (1-7).

Like Kanye West in his hit song (with Jay-Z) “Otis”, I guess it’s safe to say Faust has his “swagger back.”

“Truth.”

Faust helped hold Maryland together after blowing what was once a 16 point lead against the Mountaineers. As The Mount felt more and more confident in the second half, the Terrapins clearly needed contributions from players other than guard Terrell Stoglin. Stoglin was fantastic again, scoring 23 points and making shot after shot late, but Faust offered help. He canned a three from the corner with 6:41 to play after MSM had taken a 63-61 advantage, then came up with two blocks in the final four minutes of the game. His block of Julian Norfleet with 20 seconds to play came at a time when the Terps were clinging to a one point lead.

It was by far Faust’s best performance since the team’s 78-71 win over Colorado November 18th in the 5-hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

“He went to the rim and got to the foul line” Turgeon added. “He made a three because of his confidence. He still took some bad shots but hopefully he grows out of that. I thought he played with great effort. He didn’t give up on the last play (his block), and a lot of kids would have. That lay up would have given them a one point lead. I was pleased with him tonight.”

“It definitely was a confidence booster for me” Faust said after the victory. “I wasn’t starting off so well this year. (I’m) just starting to play basketball, let things come to me.”

Turgeon said his meeting with Faust was about changing the way he played the game.

“Kids get so caught up in scoring and their shot. They see their numbers and what people are saying and it affects him. We tried to simplify the game for him. Defend, rebound, get the foul line and get shots for Terrell (Stoglin) and (G/F) Sean (Mosley). He did that tonight, he had five assists. We told him if he is going to score get to the rim. His first two free throws bounced in rather than out, that is huge for him.”

Faust said the meeting lead to him playing his most “relaxed” game of his young career.

“He told me to stop pressuring about scoring because he knows I’m a scorer. Just let the offense come to me, try to get my teammates open, kind of let things come to me through defense. I tried to do a great job on defense and rebounding. That’s one of the keys.”

The possible return of G Pe’Shon Howard should help take pressure off of Faust in the backcourt, but in the meantime he’ll have to continue to shoulder a heavy load. Wednesday night was the fifth game where the freshman played 30 or more minutes (37) already. Stoglin has handled the bulk of the scoring for the Terrapins, but they must continue to get help on both ends from other guards.

Faust will ultimately look to develop as a more consistent scorer, but his all-around ability to contribute can be very key for a team that won’t be described as “deep” for some time.

Maryland should have played better (especially defensively) than they did in their close win over an ‘Eers team that had scored more than 63  points just once this season. They shouldn’t have been forced to hang on for dear life against a team that had just dismissed senior guard Lamar Trice earlier in the day.

Maryland should have been better in a number of ways. But Faust WAS better, even in a nailbiter of a win.

In a season where progress might not always be evident, it was a positive step.

I mean, is there ANY possible better way to celebrate than a trip Fells Point for some Captain Crunch French Toast???

On and since we’re here, The Hangover Part II wasn’t great. But it did spur Mike Tyson’s singing career, and I think the whole world can say thank you for that…

I could post songs from four different acts coming to town next week-but in all fairness, only one of them is Elton John.

Therefore, here are four Elton John songs. I’m sure you understand.

9. Roller Derby: Charm City Roller Girls (Saturday 5:30pm Du Burns Arena)

Does anyone remember the “Roller Jam” show that used to be on TNN a few years back???

Holy hell. How did that show not last? That’s Jerry Springer-quality awesome. “Awesome sauce” in fact.

(If you’re a “Parks & Recreation” fan and that last line meant something to you, you’re a hero to me.)

8. Golf: PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational (Thursday & Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday & Sunday 2:30pm live on NBC. All golf from Orlando); LPGA Tour Kia Classic (Thursday-Saturday 3:30pm, Sunday 4pm live on Golf Channel)

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are going to play in Orlando…which means that if you so choose to, you can watch two bad golfers on television this weekend.

I enjoy the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but in my neighborhood we always called it the “Half & Half” Invitational.

Anyone?

Also-why can’t I post the Family Guy “Old People Agree With Arnold Palmer” clip here? It’s nowhere to be found on YouTube…or anywhere else. It’s pretty funny. And pretty honest. I think I’m starting to feel more and more like Arnold Palmer at age 27.

7. NHL: Washington Capitals @ Philadelphia Flyers (Tuesday 7:30pm from Philly live on VERSUS), Washington Capitals @ Ottawa Senators (Friday 7:30pm from Ottawa live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Washington Capitals @ Montreal Canadiens (Saturday 7pm from Montreal live on Comcast SportsNet & NHL Network)

With the Caps playing in the City of Brotherly Love this week, I get the chance to rag on Drew Forrester-sharing memories of Bobby Clarke, Ron Hextall, Ken Linseman and Joffrey Lupul.

In fact, here’s a small gift for my “Morning Reaction” cohort…

Oh wait…I guess we’re supposed to be pretending like that fight never happened…

5. Women’s College Basketball: Georgetown @ Maryland (Tuesday 7pm from Comcast Center live on ESPN2 & ESPN3.com); other games Tuesday, Saturday-Monday on ESPN2 & ESPN3.com

Thus far we’ve seen a lot of YouTube videos, but absolutely no pictures of attractive women.

Does it make me sexist that I waited until the “Women’s College Basketball” section to consider attractive women? At least I said “attractive women” instead of “sexy broads”, right?

The below picture is of former Playboy model Tiffany Taylor, a University of Maryland graduate. So, you know, once again…Terrapins > Hoyas.

4. College Basketball: NCAA Tournament Sweet 16-San Diego State vs. UConn (Thursday 7:15pm from Anaheim live on CBS), Florida vs. BYU (Thursday 7:27pm from New Orleans live on TBS), Duke vs. Arizona (Thursday 9:45pm from Anaheim live on CBS), Wisconsin vs. Butler (Thursday 9:57pm from New Orleans live on TBS), North Carolina vs. Marquette (Friday 7:15pm from Newark live on CBS), Kansas vs. Richmond (Friday 7:27pm from San Antonio live on TBS), Ohio State vs. Kentucky (Friday 9:45pm from Newark live on CBS), Florida State vs. VCU (Friday 9:57pm from San Antonio live on TBS); Elite 8 games Saturday & Sunday live on CBS

The good news? With Jimmer Fridette and the Cougars still very much alive, CBS & Turner intelligently decided to send “Mr. March Madness” Gus Johnson to the Big Easy.

That leads us to the fantastic video of Johnson calling the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Hail Mary victory over the Houston Texans this season, courtesy of “imaU2fan” on Twitter. This is pretty good…

Both the Cavaliers and Tar Heels are coming to town this weekend. Conveniently, I can’t stand the Cavaliers or the Tar Heels.

Not all of the memories between the Terps and UNC are positive, but here’s one I like…

2. Soccer: MISL Championship-Milwaukee Wave @ Baltimore Blast (Friday 1st Mariner Arena); Argentina @ Team USA (Saturday 7pm from East Rutherford, NJ live on ESPN2); MLS-DC United @ New England Revolution (Saturday 4:30pm from Foxborough, MA live on Comcast SportsNet)

Attention people of Wisconsin: I appreciate what your Green Bay Packers did in the Super Bowl. In fact, I’ll always be grateful.

But on Friday night, I hope you lose. Terribly. Preferably something along the lines of 400,000 to zero.

But I’ll still be grateful that you beat the Steelers. And I’ll be grateful that “That 70′s Show” was set there. I always thought “Mila Kunis or Laura Prepon” should have been the “Ginger or Maryann” of my generation…

1. Boxing: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Jorge Solis (Saturday 9:45pm from Atlantic City live on HBO)

You’re thinking to yourself: “Who the hell are these guys?”

The response: “who cares?”

The reason why this fight is #1 on the list is that Ravens S Tom Zbikowski is scheduled to fight on the undercard.

As I told Tom two weeks ago, I’m a Notre Dame hater in general. But I pull for him…even if I pull for Georgia Tech when I’m watching “Rudy.”

Feel better Fighting Irish lovers. You know I still cry during this scene…

Loyola, Towson, Stevenson get wins; Hopkins, Maryland, UMBC suffer setbacks on third Saturday of College lacrosse season

Posted on 05 March 2011 by WNST Staff

Here are the official recaps of this weekend’s local college lacrosse action, thanks to each school’s Sports Information office…

10th-Ranked Princeton Too Much for 8th-Ranked Johns Hopkins, 8-3

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins scored on its first shot of the game in each of its first three games this season and parlayed those quick starts in victories. On Saturday at Homewood Field, it was visiting Princeton that struck the first blow with a Tyler Moni goal just 58 second into the Tigers’ much-anticipated game against the eighth-ranked Blue Jays and Princeton never looked back in an 8-3 victory before a crowd of 3,936. The win is Princeton’s third straight against JHU and second straight at Homewood Field as the Tigers won their last game here in 2006.

Princeton, which had dropped its opener to Hofstra a week earlier, jumped to a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the game as Forest Sonnenfeldt struck for an unassisted goal with a flag down and freshman Tom Schreiber added an extra-man tally 54 seconds later to dig the Blue Jays into their biggest hole of the young season.

Princeton wouldn’t beat JHU goalie Pierce Basset for more than 20 minutes after Schreiber’s goal, but Hopkins managed only a Kyle Wharton goal just over three minutes into the second quarter during that time and a late flurry by the Tigers just before halftime pushed the two-goal margin to 6-1 at the half.

Schreiber notched his second of the game with 3:41 remaining in the opening half as he went high-to-low on a pass from behind the goal from Chris McBride to make it 4-1 and Mike Grossman worked inside his defender and beat Bassett from in tight with 68 seconds remaining in the period. When Schreiber blew home an extra-man goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first half, the Tigers had a five-goal lead that Hopkins never seriously threatened in the second half.

While the Blue Jays never sliced into the deficit, which swelled to six early in the third quarter when Jeff Froccaro scored less than 90 seconds into the period, it certainly wasn’t for lack of chances. The Blue Jays had eight third-quarter possessions, but generated just one shot against seven turnovers against a suffocating Princeton defense and the Tigers closed the door for good when Schreiber polished off his four-goal, five-point showing with an unassisted goal 69 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Seniors Chris Boland and Kyle Wharton added markers for the Blue Jays in the final 10 minutes, but Princeton goalie Tyler Fiorito came up with three big saves down the stretch, including stops from in tight on Boland and John Greeley, to preserve the win.

Fiorito anchored the Princeton defense with a nine-save effort, while Schreiber’s four goals and five points paced a Tiger offense that generated 32 shots and maintained possession for long periods of time. Princeton’s time of possession advantage came in large part to a dominant performance on ground balls, where they held a 38-21 advantage.

Sawyer Scores Five As Loyola Runs Past Bellarmine
BALTIMORE - Mike Sawyer scored three of his career-high five goals during a 16-minute, 3-second stretch in the second half as Loyola University Maryland went on a 6-1 run to take control of a 9-6 victory over Bellarmine University on Saturday in the ECAC Lacrosse League opener at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Tied 3-3 at the half, Sawyer took a pass from Davis Butts and gave Loyola the lead just 45 seconds into the third quarter. The Knights, however, won the ensuing face-off and scored just six ticks later, as Will Cary fed Liam Kelly to knot the game at 4-4.

Loyola would go ahead, 5-4, with 9:26 left in the third when D.J. Comer rolled around the left side of the cage and ripped a hard shot past Bellarmine’s Dillon Ward for his third goal of the season. The score started a 5-0 Greyhounds’ run that would extend into the fourth quarter.

Two Bellarmine penalties over the next two-plus minutes would then contribute to a pair of Greyhounds’ goals.

Patrick Fanshaw found an open Sawyer near the top of the crease with 8:20 to play in the third, and Sawyer scored his fourth goal of the afternoon, and after another Knights’ penalty, Stephen Murray came down the left alley, caught a Matt Langan pass and scored with 6:34 on the third-quarter clock, giving the Greyhounds a 7-4 advantage.

Loyola’s John Schiavone won the next face-off, and 40 seconds after Murray’s goal, Langan sent another pass from behind the cage, finding Fanshaw for his second goal of the game.

Langan matched his career-high with four assists.”Matt Langan is our quarterback, and he did a great job of finding people who were open for good shots today,” Head Coach Charley Toomey said. “We think that anytime Mike Sawyer gets his hands free, he is going to have a good chance to score. For us, it’s a matter of putting our shots on goal because we have guys that are very good shooters when they do.”

The Greyhounds outshot Bellarmine, 42-26, putting 23 shots on frame.

Fanshaw’s goal gave Loyola an 8-4 lead going into the fourth quarter that Sawyer extended to 9-4 with 13:12 remaining in the game off a Comer assist.

Mitch McLaren and Kelly scored after that for Bellarmine, but Loyola ran out the clock on the Knights.

Loyola’s defense was stout for the third game in a row this season, holding Bellarmine to 26 shots. Goalkeeper Jake Hagelin made a season-high 11 saves, and the Greyhounds’ defense had a season-best 13 caused turnovers.

“We had a team that was dodging at us today, and that allowed us to get on their hands and create some turnovers,” sophomore defender Reid Acton said.

Acton led the team with a career-best four caused turnovers, while Steve Dircks and Scott Ratliff each had two.

Despite having just a 19-17 advantage in the first half, Loyola picked up 42 ground balls to Bellarmine’s 30.

Josh Hawkins led the way, grabbing seven ground balls for the second game in a row. Dircks and Schiavone each had five, while Hagelin and Chris Basler both picked up four.

Loyola took a 1-0 lead just 61 seconds into the game as Langan fed Fanshaw for the contest’s first goal. Billy Wersel tied things up for Bellarmine with 12:26 left in the first quarter before Langan found Sawyer free for a shot and goal with 6:24 on the clock.

Karsen Leung dodged and shot from 10 yards in front of the crease to pull the Knights even 1:36 into the second quarter, but Sawyer found the net again, this time unassisted, with 11:40 left in the first half.

Bellarmine’s Lance Robinson took a Leung pass and scored 34 ticks later to tie things up at 3-3, a score that would hold until Sawyer’s first goal in the third quarter.

Loyola steps back out of conference action on Friday when it travels to Durham, N.C., to take on the defending national champions, Duke, at 7 p.m.

#3 Terps Fall in OT at #19 Duke, 9-8

DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 3 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team engaged in a back-and-forth battle at No. 19 Duke, but in the end it was the Blue Devils taking the victory, 9-8 in overtime, at Koskinen Stadium.

The Terps (2-1) drew first blood with just over three minutes into the game. Junior Joe Cummings scored unassisted with a stick-side high rocket from the left alley.

The lead was upped to 2-0 at the 10:31 mark when sophomore Landon Carr scored off of a nice feed from senior Grant Catalino. The Blue Devil defense used an early slide on Catalino, trying not to let the Terps’ leading scorer get off a shot, but that left Carr wide open in the right alley.

The Blue Devils (2-2) made it all even at 2-2 with back-to-back unassisted goals by Jordan Wolf and David Lawson.

Maryland regained the lead with a man-up goal at the 2:49 mark, capitalizing on a slash by Duke’s Luke Dupree. Senior Travis Reed made a great pass to Cummings on the crease and Cummings finished the play with ease.

Duke drew first blood at the start of the second to even things up at three goals apiece. Zach Howell scored on an unsettled situation at the 12:46 mark.

The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game on a Jake Tripucka goal with 7:08 left in the second, but the Terps knotted things back up at 4-4 with 2:48 remaining on an unassisted goal by John Haus.

The game appeared to be headed into halftime with the scored tied, but Tripucka struck again for the Blue Devils, giving them a 5-4 lead with just three seconds left in the half.

Duke extended its lead to 7-4 early in the third when Justin Turri and Wolf scored back-to-back goals.

Redshirt freshman Niko Amato kept the Terps within striking distance with eight saves in the third quarter. He finished the game with a career high 19 stops.

The Terps got back on the board early in the fourth thanks to an exceptional individual effort by Carr. He stripped his man in the Maryland defensive zone with a great check. Carr then picked up the groundball, outran two Blue Devils and scored on a bounce shot from 10 yards out to make cut the Blue Devil lead to 7-5 with 11:55 remaining.

Maryland’s short sticks continued to be an offensive force as junior Michael Shakespeare scored an unassisted goal at the 11:07 mark to trim it to a one-goal deficit.

The midfield struck again less than three minutes later when Haus dodged down the left alley and beat Duke goalie Dan Wigrizer far side to tie the game at 7-7.

Maryland retook the lead with 3:48 to go on Haus’ third goal of the game. He dodged down the right alley and beat Wigrizer low for the 8-7 Terrapin lead.

The Terps seemed to have the game won when Carr stripped the ball from a Blue Devil, but the officials ruled a hold on the play giving the ball back to Duke and Howell made it count tying the game with his second goal of the game with just three seconds left in the fourth, sending the game into overtime.

That set the stage for Wolf to score the game winner with 1:01 gone in the overtime period.

Maryland has a short turnaround with a game vs. Bellarmine on tap for Monday, March 7 at 3 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

Game Notes:
• With today’s 9-8 loss Maryland is now 56-18 all-time vs. Duke.
• Maryland is now 18-20-3 all-time in overtime games.
• With two points on two goals, junior Joe Cummings now has 15 multi-point and nine multi-goal games for his career.
• Sophomore John Haus tied his career high with three goals and now has two hat tricks, six multi-point games and four multi-goal games for his career.
• Sophomore Landon Carr set a career high with two goals for his first career multi-point and multi-goal game.
• Senior defender Brett Schmidt set a career best with six groundballs.
• The Terps held Duke scoreless for 23:30 from 8:33 of the third quarter to 0:03 of the fourth, marking the third time this season that Maryland has held an opponent scoreless for 20 or more minutes.

Tigers Erupt For 11-3 Win Over The Mount
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sophomore Matt Hughes scored two of his career high three goals in the first 8:05 of the game as the Tigers (1-2) erupted for four early goals en route to a dominating 11-3 victory over Mount St. Mary’s (0-2) at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers, who were held to eight goals in their first two games of the season, were never seriously threatened after grabbing the early 4-0 lead. The Tigers owned a 6-2 lead at halftime and shut out the Mountaineers for the first 26:21 of the second half.

By the time sophomore Andrew Scalley ended the Mountaineers’ 29:57 scoring drought, the Tigers owned a comfortable 10-2 lead.

“We moved the ball very well and we put our shots on the goal,” said Coach Tony Seaman. “After the way we struggled on offense the last two weeks, it was such a relief to get that 4-0 lead. You could see it on the field. The kids relaxed and we played with much more confidence.”

While the Tigers scored 11 goals on 46 shots, their defense did a great job shutting down the Mountaineers. Led by junior Michael Landy and senior Marc Ingerman, the Tiger defense held The Mount to 31 shots and forced 13 turnovers. The Tigers also harassed the Mountaineers into five failed clears.

“Our defense has been playing well all season,” said Coach Seaman. “They have so much confidence in our goalkeeper (Travis Love) and they force the other team to take shots that our goalie can save.”

After scoring only two goals in a 3-2 loss to Loyola last week, the Tigers came out firing against The Mount. With 13:09 left in the first quarter, Hughes scored an unassisted goal to give Towson a quick 1-0 advantage. Less than a minute later, freshman Andrew Hodgson scored his first career goal off a pass from Hughes. Senior Peter Mezzanotte set up the goal by forcing a turnover.

With 9:16 left in the first quarter, junior Stephen Norris scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Hodgson to put the Tigers up, 3-0. With 6:55 remaining in the opening period, Hughes upped the lead to 4-0 when he scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Carl Iacona.

After being shut out for the first 14 minutes, the Mountaineers scored their first goal of the game when sophomore Andrew Scalley tallied an unassisted goal with 49 seconds left in the first quarter.

Although The Mount outshot Towson in the opening quarter by a 10-9 margin, the Mountaineers trailed by 4-1 as Love made five saves in the first period.

In the second quarter, the Tigers continued to dominate play. With 13:40 remaining in the second quarter, freshman Thomas DeNapoli tallied the first goal of his career to give Towson a 5-1 lead.

Hughes scored his third goal of the game off a pass from Pat Britton with 6:45 left in the half to put the Tigers up by 6-1. Junior midfielder Bryant Schmidt’s goal on a 15-yard shot with 3:36 remaining in the half cut The Mount’s deficit to 6-2.

In the second half, the Tigers extended their lead by adding two goals in the third period. DeNapoli’s second goal of the game made it a 7-2 lead with only 1:20 elapsed. With 4:06 remaining in the third quarter, junior Michael Brashears scored the Tigers’ first extra man goal of the season off a pass from Mezzanotte to put Towson ahead, 8-2.

In the third quarter, the held the Mountaineers to eight shots and Love made saves on five of them.

With 11:58 left in the game, junior Matt Lamon scored his second goal of the season on a fast break as he took a pass from Mezzanotte to give the Tigers a 9-2 lead. With 5:52 remaining, Hodgson scored an extra man goal off a pass from senior Tim Stratton to give the Tigers a 10-2 advantage.

The Mountaineers spent most of the fourth period killing off penalties as they were called for four slashing penalties in the final 6:48 of the game.

With his team trailing by 10-2, Scalley scored his second goal of the game on a behind-the-back shot off a pass from Brendan Harrison to cut the deficit to 10-3. That goal ended a scoreless streak of 29:57.

With 34 seconds left in the game, Norris scored his second goal of the game, another extra man goal, to put the game away. Brashears assisted on the goal.

“Winning sure helps everything,” said Coach Seaman, who earned his 97th victory as the Tigers’ coach. “When I saw those 11 goals on the scoreboard, I wanted to take a picture of it. I’m not sure anyone back in Towson would believe it.”

Hughes led the Tigers with three goals and one assist as he tied his career high with four points. Hodgson and DeNapoli each enjoyed the first two-goal games of their young careers. Norris also scored a pair of goals.

Love made 11 saves for the Tigers before giving way to sophomore Andrew Wascavage, who made two saves in the final minutes.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday when they host Maryland at 12 noon at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.

UMBC Rallies, But No. 11 North Carolina Prevails, 13-9; Grimm Posts Five-Point Game

Chapel Hill, N.C.—Junior attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) tied a career-high with five points, but a Retriever comeback fell short, as No. 11 North Carolina (3-1) defeated UMBC (1-2),13-9,at Fetzer Field.

Grimm scored three goals and added a pair of assists, while freshman midfielder Zach Linkous (Jarrettsville, Md./St. Paul’s) and sophomore midfielder Scott Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) added two goals apiece.

North Carolina was paced by attackman Nicky Galasso who scored a pair of goals and added three assists, while midfielder Marcus Holman scored four goals.

Trailing 9-2 at the 9:47 mark of the third quarter, UMBC rallied furiously and closed the gap to 11-8 on a man-up goal by Linkous with 7:09 to play in the game. After killing off a penalty, UMBC had two opportunities to close with a pair of goals, but a Linkous’ shot attempt was blocked and Grimm’s effort was stopped by Tar Heel netminder Chris Madalon.

Carolina’ Will Campbell would restore the three-goal lead on an unassisted goal with 3:07 left, but Grimm netted his third goal with 1:22 remaining to maintain UMBC’s hopes. But the Tar Heels won the ensuing draw and Billy Bitter closed the scoring at the 1:06 mark to seal the win for the hosts.

UNC struck for the game’s first two goals in the first 5:25 of action, but Linkous and freshman attackman Matt Gregoire (Crofton, Md./South River) responded with scores to tie the game at 2-2 with 1:20 to play in the first quarter. But UNC controlled the ensuing face-off and Galasso netted his first goal of the game seven seconds later and the Tar Heels led, 3-2, after 15 minutes.

For the second consecutive game, UMBC was blanked in the second quarter as North Carolina built the lead to 6-2 at intermission. The Tar Heels outshot UMBC, 24-10, in the first half and extended the lead to 9-2 before UMBC made its spirited rally.

UMBC junior goalkeeper Brian McCullough (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) made a career-high 14 saves, while Madalon stopped 13 in the Tar Heel net. North Carolina outshot UMBC, 48-30, and captured 17 of 26 draws.
