If you listen to “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST (and why the hell wouldn’t you?), you know Drew Forrester and I are ALL IN when it comes to Ra Ra Riot. They’re strong.

Good Charlotte may be from Waldorf, but they’re huge Baltimore Orioles fans. Benji Madden and Joel Madden in fact BOTH have O’s tattoos if I remember right. Either way, Festival Song will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart…

I only know one song the Get Up Kids have ever done, and it was a cover of The Cure. But damn was it good…

9. Tennis-Davis Cup: Team USA vs. Chile (Friday 9am & 12pm, Saturday 10am, Sunday 9am & 12pm from Santiago, Chile live on Tennis Channel)

I’d be much more excited about the Davis Cup if:

1-It were on a real TV channel. No offense Tennis Channel, but I’m the biggest tennis fan on the planet and even I don’t have the Tennis Channel.

2-The great American hope wasn’t Andy Roddick. I’ll enjoy the eye candy, but winning in Memphis two weeks ago doesn’t exactly make me suddenly hopeful he’s due for a career turnaround.

Of course, if A-Rod’s flu symptoms were to keep him out, we’d be left with John Isner.

ISN’T ANYONE IN THIS COUNTRY A GOOD TENNIS PLAYER?!?!?!?!?

8. Auto Racing: NASCAR Kobalt Tools 400 (Sunday 3pm from Las Vegas live on FOX)

I can think of a few things I’d rather do in Vegas than watch Jeff Gordon drive a car.

A-Piss away money on Freemont Street while watching bad cover bands.

B-Drink alcohol out of a football…

football

C-Almost anything involving Holly Madison…

holly

7. Women’s College Basketball: ACC  Tournament-Maryland vs. Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech winner (Friday 11am from Greensboro, NC live on Fox Sports Net nationally, Comcast SportsNet locally)

Well Terps fans…if you want to be excited about March Madness…I’d suggest you learn the names of the players on Brenda Frese’s team.

First name to learn? Diana Tchatchouang.

tchatch

What is Tchatchouang French for, you ask? Actually, Tchatchouang is French for “HUH?!?!”

6. NBA: Golden State Warriors @ Washington Wizards (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Minnesota Timberwolves @ Washington Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ Detroit Pistons (Sunday 6pm from Auburn Hills, MI live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS)

Baltimore Terps fans-you don’t think things could be worse? You COULD root for the ‘Zards!

I don’t know how to polish this. The Wizards are unbelievably awful. It’s almost impossible. Making it worse this week, the teams playing the Wizards are awful too.

Why should you watch one of these games? Ummm….maybe their mascot G-Man will do something cool???

5. High School Basketball: Baltimore Catholic League Championship Game-John Carroll vs. St. Frances (Tuesday 7pm Reitz Arena)

I LIKE the fact that the Patriots and the Panthers are getting together for their fourth showdown of the season.

I LOVE any sentence that includes the words “Catholic” and “school”…

(Note-Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson unlikely to be at BCL title game Tuesday.)

4. NHL: New York Islanders @ Washington Capitals (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), St. Louis Blues @ Washington Capitals (Thursday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ Florida Panthers (Sunday 5pm from Sunrise, FL live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ Tampa Bay Lightning (Monday 7pm from Tampa live on VERSUS)

The trade deadline in the National Hockey League was Monday, and I was as surprised as anyone to see that the Caps dealt Sidney Ponson to the San Francisco Cows for Darin Blood.

(I think I just combined the Ponson and Joe Carter deals into one. God it sucks being an Orioles fan.)

All of those trades and they didn’t come up with Kenny Wu? I’m reminded of why I don’t root for the damn team…

3. College Lacrosse: Bellarmine @ Loyola (Saturday 1pm from Ridley Athletic Complex live on AM1570 WNST); Towson @ Mt. St. Mary’s (Saturday 1pm Waldron Family Stadium)http://wnst.net/wordpress/glennclark/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=10574; Princeton @ Johns Hopkins (Saturday 1pm from Homewood Field live on ESPNU); Bellarmine @ Maryland (Monday 3pm Byrd Stadium); Hood @ Stevenson (Wednesday 3pm Caves Athletic Complex)

With the Tigers and Blue Jays on the same field Saturday, there’s probably someone who can discover the cure for the common cold.

It’s too highfalutin for me. I’d rather look at picture of Kayla Love from Busted Coverage. Oh look…

kaylalove

2. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC on VERSUS-Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann (Thursday 9pm from Louisville live on VERSUS), Strikeforce Columbus: Dan Henderson vs. Rafael “Feijao” Calvacante (Saturday 10pm from Columbus live on Showtime)

Boy, I miss the days when it was a big deal when “Hendo” faught. Probably won’t be the case on Saturday night.

Martin Kampmann will join Thyrl Nelson and John Rallo on “The MMA Report” Tuesday at 1:30pm on AM1570 WNST. Then he’ll fight a guy who craps in the woods…honestly…

1. College Basketball: Maryland @ Miami (Wednesday 7pm from Coral Gables, FL live on ESPNU), Virginia @ Maryland (Saturday 2pm from Comcast Center live on ACC Network-WNUV 54 in Charm City); Morgan State @ Coppin State (Thursday 7:30pm Coppin State Physical Education Complex); MAAC Tournament-Loyola vs. St. Peter’s (Saturday 2pm from Bridgeport, Conn. live on MSG Network); America East Tournament-UMBC vs. Binghamton (Thursday 8:15pm from Hartford, Conn. streamed live at AmericaEast.com); CAA Tournament-Towson vs. Drexel (Friday 2:30pm from Richmond, streamed live at CAASports.com)

It’s march and I’m mad!

That’s mostly because the Terrapins have absolutely no shot at going to the NCAA Tournament.

Oh well. UVa still sucks. Except for Dave Matthews Band…

Loyola, Johns Hopkins Get Big Wins On First Full Weekend of College Lacrosse Season

Posted on 19 February 2011 by Glenn Clark

Here is a rundown of Saturday’s action, highlighted by Loyola’s come from behind win over Navy (as heard on AM1570 WNST) and Johns Hopkins’ 2nd half pull away win over Towson at Unitas Stadium.

Rundowns were taken from official school releases.

No. 14 Loyola Comes Back For 9-8 Win Over Navy

BALTIMORE – With winds wipping through Ridley Athletic Complex at over 40 mile per hour gusts, the 14th-ranked Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse team made a major second-half rally to overcome a five-goal deficit and defeat the United States Naval Academy, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon in the Greyhounds’ season opener.

Loyola, which trailed 7-2 after Navy’s Cade Norris scored with 5:53 to play before halftime, held the Midshipmen scoreless for 28 minutes, 5 seconds, covering both halves.

Patrick Fanshaw tied the game at 7-7 with three ticks left on the third-quarter clock, and he then scored the game-winner with 1:08 left in regulation, taking a Chris Basler pass from the right side of the crease and tallying his second goal of the game.

“We preach family, and today we showed that,” senior co-captain Matt Langan said. “We had contributions from everyone, from freshmen to fifth-year seniors. At halftime (Assistant Coach Dan) Chemotti said that there are no four-point goals, no two-point goals. We had to go out there and battle back one goal at a time, and that’s what we did.”

Possession was the key to Loyola’s comeback in the second half. Faceoff specialist John Schiavone won 14-of-21 restarts during the game, all five attempted in the third quarter and 3-of-4 in the fourth.

The Greyhounds picked up 21 second-half ground balls to Navy’s three and doubled up the Midshipmen, 32-16, in the game.

“Anytime you win 21 of 24 ground balls (in the second half), you are likely to win,” Head Coach Charley Toomey said. “We played with a lot of hustle in the last 30 minutes, and I thought that we stepped up for each other.”

Josh Hawkins led all players with seven ground balls, Schiavone had five, and Scott Ratliff and Mike Sawyer each had four.”I am lucky to have `Hawk’ and Ratliff on my team,” Schiavone said. “I think I only had two or three ground balls in the second half. The rest were them.”

Loyola only allowed one Navy shot in the third quarter while taking 16 of its own. The Greyhounds outshot the Midshipmen, 35-24, in the game.

Trailing 7-2 after Norris’ second-quarter goal, Hawkins picked up the ground ball for Loyola on the ensuing faceoff, but Loyola turned the ball over before taking a shot.

Navy had two shots on its offensive end, the latter saved by Jake Hagelin, and Dylan Grimm stripped Andy Warner of possession, and Ratliff got to the loose ball for the Greyhounds.

A good offensive possession by Loyola was culminated when Langan fired a pass from X to D.J. Comer who was waiting in front of the goal. Comer’s hard shot found the net for his second of the game, pulling Loyola within four, 34 seconds before halftime.

Neither the Greyhounds, nor Navy scored in the first eight minutes of the second dhalf, but Mike Sawyer found a crease and ripped a shot past Navy’s R.J. Wickham with 6:46 to play in the frame.

Hawkins again won the ground ball on the restart, and after a Navy penalty on Tucker Hall for offsides, Stephen Murray took a Langan pass and scored Loyola’s second man-up goal of the game.

Loyola forced another Navy turnover after one of its own following Murray’s goal, and Davis Butts ran down the right alley, scoring his first goal of the season with 2:51 left in the third, cutting the Midshipmen’s advantage to 7-6.

A Midshipmen timeout could not stop Loyola, as Hawkins picked up the ground ball on the face-off, his third in a row. His shot in an unsettled possession bounced wide left, and Navy forced a Loyola turnover moments later.

Loyola, however, forced a Midshipmen turnover, and after setting Sawyer missed wide right, the Greyhounds set up for the final shot of the quarter. Langan started the play from X and fed Fanshaw who ripped a goal with three seconds left in the third quarter, making it a tie game going into the fourth.

After Ratliff picked up the ground ball on Schiavone’s fourth-quarter opening face-off win, Michael Hirsch caused a turnover for Navy, and Brian Striffler had two shots for the Midshipmen. The first went right and Hagelin made a save on the second with 11:53 remaining in regulation.

Sawyer then tallied his game-high third goal 20 seconds later, giving Loyola its first lead of the game, 8-7.

Navy did not back down, however, as Jay Mann took a Sam Jones pass and tied the game with 7:48 to play.

The Midshipmen won the ensuing face-off, their only win of the second half, but Hagelin saved a Jones shot, and Loyola cleared the ball to its offensive end.

Wickham made two saves, and another went wide before Basler found Fanshaw for the game-winner with 1:08 left on the clock.

Loyola earned the next possession, but a turnover gave it back to Navy with just over 30 seconds left. Striffler had a shot sail wide left, and Navy called timeout with 5.2 seconds remaining.

Andy Warner took the ball in his stick and went left around a pick, but Hagelin stopped his shot with a second left, securing the win.

Loyola’s victory was reminiscent of last season’s 8-7 win to open the season at Navy when Cooper MacDonnell scored the game-winner in overtime.

The Greyhounds are back in action next Saturday, February 26, when they take on Towson at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ABC-2 in the Baltimore area, ESPN3.com nationally, and it can be heard in Baltimore on WNST-AM 1570.

JHU Grabs 900th All-Time Win With 10-6 Victory at Towson

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins attackmen Zach Palmer, Kyle Wharton and Chris Boland combined for seven goals and four assists and the Blue Jay defense held host Towson scoreless for a stretch of 35:22 midway through the game as 11th-ranked JHU opened the 2011 season with a 10-6 victory before 3,226 fans at wind-blown Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win is JHU’s 16th straight against the Tigers and the 900th all-time in school history. Johns Hopkins is the first men’s lacrosse program in the nation to reach the 900-win mark.

After Towson’s Carl Iacona gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead with an unassisted goal at the 10:30 mark of the second quarter, the Blue Jay defense clamped down and didn’t allow another goal until senior midfielder Pat Britton finally broke the ice with an unassisted goal of his own with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.

It was all Johns Hopkins between those goals as the Blue Jays reeled off six unanswered goals during that time, including five by the starting attack.

A Lee Coppersmith goal on a simple ally dodge less than 90 seconds after Iacona’s goal drew the Blue Jays even at 4-4 and the teams went to the half with no further scoring.

Towson had two golden chances to take a 5-4 lead, but Johns Hopkins goalie Pierce Bassett made saves on back-to-back Towson extra-man chances in the first five minutes of the third quarter and the Blue Jays capitalized with back-to-back goals in a 78-second span midway through the period to take the lead for good.

Wharton’s second goal of the game off a nifty no-look pass from sophomore John Greeley made it 5-4 and Palmer’s extra-man goal a short time later made it 6-4. Freshman Brandon Benn assisted on Palmer’s goal as he found him cutting down the ally from the side of the goal and Palmer quick-sticked it home.

Wharton notched his third goal of the game three minutes later as a Bassett save led to a transition goal with freshman Phil Castronova getting the helper as Wharton notched his 10th career hat trick.

Boland netted consecutive goals of his own – the first with 3:09 left in the third quarter and the second with just 5:55 remaining in the fourth quarter – to extend the lead to 9-4 before Britton sandwiched a pair of goals around Benn’s first career tally to account for the 10-6 final.

The Blue Jays led 3-1 after less than eight minutes of the first quarter as Wharton, Palmer and freshman Eric Ruhl all scored early with only a Matt Thomas goal mixed in for the Tigers in the minutes.

Towson responded with a three-goal run that was capped by Iacona’s goal early in the second quarter, but Coppersmith’s goal a short time later ignited the game-turning 6-0 for the Blue Jays.

Palmer tied his career high with five points and posted a personal-best three assists to lead the way offensively for the Blue Jays, held advantages in shots (35-29), ground balls (36-23) and faceoffs (11-10). Senior Matt Dolente won 8-of-14 faceoffs and grabbed four ground balls for Johns Hopkins, which improved to 9-2 under head coach Dave Pietramala in season openers.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Tuesday, February 22 when the Blue Jays travel to Delaware for a 6 pm game against the Blue Hens. Delaware improved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-7 win against Marist on Saturday.

UMBC Lacrosse Opens 2011 Campaign With 16-10 Win at Presbyterian

Clinton, S.C.—UMBC sophomore midfielder Dave Brown scored four goals and added three assists as the Retrievers opened the 2011 season with a 16-10 victory at Presbyterian (0-2).

Brown was part of a potent UMBC starting midfield unit which accounted for 11 goals. Sophomore midfielder Scott Jones contributed four goals and one helper, while classmate Scott Hopmann (Annapolis, Md. /St. Mary’s) tallied three times.

Retriever junior attackman Rob Grimm had a goal and a career-high four assists.

The Blue Hose scored just 39 seconds into their home opener, but Jones got the equalizer 45 seconds later, converting a Grimm feed. Then Hopmann scored back-to-back goals at the 9:38 and 6:20 marks to give the Retrievers the lead for good. Grimm assisted on UMBC’s first three scores.

The Retrievers would lead, 5-2, after one quarter and built the advantage to 10-5 at halftime. UMBC closed the half with three straight goals, including one man-up and one even strength goal by Brown and the first collegiate goal for red-shirt freshman Matt Gregoire (Crofton, Md./South River).

The two teams exchanged scores to start the second half, but Presbyterian went on a 4-0 run to get within 11-10 on an Andrew Athens’ goal at the 11:01 mark of the fourth quarter. But Brown scored at 10:02 to start a game-ending 5-0 Retriever run, capped by Jones’ fourth goal of the game with 4:57 remaining.

UMBC outshot the Blue Hose, 49-25, and PC netminder Jon Athens was credited with 21 saves. Retrievers junior netminder Brian McCullough made six saves to get the victory for the visitors.

The Retrievers also controlled 25 of 29 draws, as senior J.D. Harkey captured 13 of 15 and sophomore Joseph Impallaria (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) won 12 of 14.

UMBC opens the home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 26 when they host Rutgers at UMBC Stadium. The opening face-off takes place at 1:00 p.m.

#4 Terps Open Season With 16-4 Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It was not the smoothest start to a season, but the No. 3 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team got four points from four different Terps to give head coach John Tillman a 16-4 victory over Detroit Mercy in his first game at the helm of the Terrapin program.

The Titans (0-4) capitalized on two non-releasable Terrapin penalties to take a 2-0 lead with just under six minutes left in the first quarter, but from that point on it was all Maryland as the Terps (1-0) ripped off 10 unanswered goals from the final minutes of the first quarter to midway through the third.

Junior Joe Cummings, who was one of two Terps to tally hat tricks on the day, got things going for Maryland with a slick turn-and-shoot goal just outside the crease off of a nice feed by sophomore John Haus.

Senior Ryan Young took over the game at the start of the second quarter, scoring three straight to give the Terps a 4-2 lead. The first of Young’s goals came on an extra-man opportunity when he finished a nice pass from senior Grant Catalino. He scored his second a minute later, one-timing a cross-crease pass from senior Travis Reed. Young completed the natural hat trick with another easy goal thanks to a terrific skip pass by Haus.

Next up it was Reed’s turn to net a pair of goals for the Terps to make it a 6-2 game with just under four minutes to go in the second. Reed’s first came on a lefty rocket from the right wing off an assist from Young.

Reed’s second score came via Maryland’s dangerous transition game. Senior defender Brett Schmidt caused a turnover and got the groundball on the left side of the field near the midfield stripe. He quickly fed a pass to senior defender Max Schmidt, who was racing down the middle of the field. Max Schmidt then quickly moved the ball on to Reed who beat Titan goalie A.J. Levell with a quick shot.

With less than three minutes to go in the half Reed was on the giving end of the next Maryland goal. He found junior Jake Bernhardt running free into the restraining box and Bernhardt ripped a shot from 12 yards out to give the Terps a 7-2 advantage.

That lead grew to 8-2 just before halftime thanks to Catalino’s first goal of the afternoon. Haus picked up his third helper of the day by skipping the pass through to Catalino on the left goal line extended and Catalino had enough time to give Levell a good ball fake before finishing the play low.

Maryland’s scoring run continued after the break with Cummings scoring his second of the day just 46 seconds into the third quarter. Cummings’ dodging goal from down the left alley was the Terps’ first unassisted goal of the game.

Catalino finished the 10-0 run at the 8:59 mark, lacing a low-to-low shot from the left alley off a nice feed from Jake Bernhardt.

Detroit Mercy’s Shayne Adams ended the Titans’ scoreless streak at 32:13 with his sixth goal of the season at the 6:52 mark. But that only gave the Terps the chance to begin another scoring run.

Junior Drew Snider started this five-goal run for the Terps with a nice shot into the upper right corner from the left wing. Haus picked up his career-best fourth assist on the goal.

The Terps’ transition game worked to perfection again to close out scoring for the third quarter. Sophomore Jesse Bernhardt caused a turnover that junior Michael Shakespeare advanced into the offensive zone. Sophomore Landon Carr made a great run down the middle of the field and finished the play with his first career goal to make it a 12-3 Terrapin lead.

The run continued less than two minutes into the fourth quarter on Snider’s second goal of the game.

Senior Fran Gormley scored his first of the season at the 12:19 mark on a terrific shot from 10 yards out to make it a 14-3 Terrapin lead.

Sophomore Owne Blye finished the five-goal run with his first goal at the 7:59 mark. Freshman Sean McGuire picked up his first collegiate point by feeding Blye the ball after Blye made a good cut toward the crease.

Matt Gregson closed out the scoring for the Titans with an unassisted goal with 6:28 left in the game.

Cummings finished things up for the Terps with a goal from the right alley with 3:55 remaining.

The Terps were terrific when the ball was on the ground, winning the groundball battle 49-23. A big reason for that was the play of sophomore Curtis Holmes on face-offs. Holmes won 17 of 21 face-offs and had a game-high five groundballs.

Redshirt freshman Niko Amato made his first collegiate start a solid one, making three saves and allowing just four goals in 52:01. Amato also chipped in with four groundballs and a caused turnover.

Maryland’s defense limited the Titans to just 17 shots for the game. At close defense, seniors Ryder Bohlander, Shane Hall, Brett Schmidt and Max Schmidt combined for nine groundballs and five caused turnovers.

The Terps’ long pole trio of Jesse Bernhardt, Michael White and David Miller combined for seven groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Maryland returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 26, when it hosts No. 15 Georgetown at 3 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 06 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Women’s College Basketball-Maryland @ Loyola (Tuesday 7pm Reitz Arena), UMBC @ Maryland (Friday 7pm Comcast Center); Golf: PGA Tour Shark Shootout (Friday 3pm live on Golf Channel, Saturday 4pm Sunday 3pm live on NBC. All golf from Naples, FL); High School Basketball: Edmondson @ Perry Hall (Wednesday 6:30pm), Perry Hall @ Dulaney (Friday 7pm)

10. Matisyahu (Tuesday 7pm Rams Head Live), Hinder/Saving Abel/My Darkest Days/Default (Wednesday 7pm Rams Head Live); Old 97′s (Tuesday 7pm Recher Theatre), Nonpoint (Thursday 7pm Recher Theatre); Usher (Wednesday 8pm 1st Mariner Arena); Better Than Ezra (Wednesday 7pm 9:30 Club), G. Love & Special Sauce (Monday 8pm 9:30 Club); National Tree Lighting Ceremony feat. B.B. King, Maroon 5, Sara Bareilles (Thursday 5pm President’s Park); Mint Condition (Thursday & Friday 7:30pm Birchmere); T.I. “No Mercy” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday); Mid-Atlantic Holiday Beer Tasting (Saturday 12pm The Brewer’s Art)

With this being Hanukkah, I will mention that I LOVE Matisyahu…

Haven’t heard of Old 97′s? Maybe it’s time to take a minute…

Maybe Nonpoint should invite Ray Lewis over to Recher Theatre for their Phil Collins cover…

Better Than Ezra is the type of band that has had a much bigger impact on my life than I might really recognize. Between Empire Records and THIS classic, I’m really grateful for the boys from New Orleans…

9. Inception“, “Shrek Forever After” and “Boy Meets World Season 4” available in stores (Tuesday)

You know why Season 4 of Boy Meets World was the best one? It was the season that featured the “Sixteen Candles and 400 Pound Men” episode. You know, where Cory Matthews had to help his friend Frankie with his father (Vader)’s match against Jake “The Snake” Roberts while also being there to dance with Topanga Lawrence at her 16th birthday party.

Yeah, I’m a nerd. But this is a great episode. It’s an ode to The Flintstones episode where Fred Flintstone has to be in two places at once. Here’s the end of the episode…

8. Boxing: IBF/WBO Heavyweight Championship-Vladimir Klitschko vs. Dereck Chisora (Saturday 5pm from Mannheim, Germany live on ESPN3.com), Yonnhy Perez vs. Joseph Agbeko, Abner Mares vs. Vic Darchinyan (Saturday 9pm from Tacoma, Washington live on Showtime)

I’ll be forced to admit that I could not have told you who held the IBF, WBO, WBA, HBO, NBA, NWA, OPP, TLC, IWIF, MIAA, NAACP or UNICEF heavyweight titles.

And frankly, I have nothing to offer to a boxing discussion that would be of value. Except that the “Floyd Wetherton” character on Family Guy was an amazing combination of both very sad and very funny…

7. Soccer: MISL-Missouri Comets @ Baltimore Blast (Saturday 7:35pm 1st Mariner Arena); College Soccer: NCAA Championship Game (Sunday 4pm from Santa Barbara, CA live on ESPN2)

Obviously there’s little to no interest in the College Cup now because Maryland lost to Michigan Saturday, eliminating the Terrapins from the NCAA Tournament.

I’d like to give you another reason to watch Friday and Sunday, but I honestly don’t have it.

Instead, I’ll discuss something much more significant in the world of soccer. A recent news story about the breakout soccer star of 2010.

You’ll remember Larissa Riquelme as the Paraguay soccer fan who captivated the attention of the world during this summer’s World Cup. NOW you’ll remember her as the girl who recently wore this dress…

riquelme

6. NBA: Washington Wizards @ Los Angeles Lakers (Tuesday 10:30pm from LA live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ Sacramento Kings (Wednesday 10pm from Sacramento live on Comcast SportsNet), New York Knicks @ Washington Wizards (Friday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

If you’re a fan of the ‘Zards (I’ve heard a rumor there are a handful of you out there somewhere, but I haven’t actually MET any of you in my life), I suggest you not watch their game with me Tuesday night. I’ll be rooting hard for the Lakers.

Not because I’m some sort of bandwagon Lakers fan, trust me.

I’ll be rooting hard for the Lakers because this guy plays for them…

Steve Blake will always be a hero to me.

5. NHL: Carolina Hurricanes @ Washington Capitals (Thursday 7pm from Verizon Center live on VERSUS & Comcast SportsNet), Colorado Avalanche @ Washington Capitals (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ New York Rangers (Sunday 7pm from New York live on Comcast SportsNet & NHL Network)

You already know I’m not a fan of the Caps, so let’s just move on from that.

I’m not sure if this particular dress…

rangersdress

…is available in a Phoenix Coyotes style, I know what “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” will be getting for Christmas this year. And will be wearing to every function we attend in 2011.

4. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC 124-Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck (Saturday 10pm from Montreal live on Pay-Per-View)

Since the fight is happening in Montreal, I know damn well who I’m picking to win…

youppi

Youppi is awesome. Oh…of course I’m picking GSP to win. He’s fighting Josh Koscheck. Who the hell am I supposed to pick there?

3. College Basketball: UNC-Greensboro @ Maryland (Wednesday 7:30pm from Comcast Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Boston College @ Maryland (Sunday 4pm from Comcast Center live on Fox Sports Net-CSN locally in Charm City); Towson @ UMBC (Saturday 7pm RAC Arena); Towson @ George Washington (Wednesday 7pm Smith Center); Navy @ Coppin State (Tuesday 7:30pm Coppin State Physical Education Complex), West Virginia Tech @ Coppin State (Saturday 4pm Coppin State Physical Education Complex); Loyola @ George Mason (Wednesday 7pm from Patriot Center live on MASN), Mt. St. Mary’s @ Loyola (Saturday 4pm Reitz Arena)

I’m torn here. On one side, I’m very happy to see the start of ACC season. On the other side, the Terps’ loss to Temple in the BB&T Classic leaves me just a bit concerned.

I know this much. If I see ANY of you wearing this shirt this week, I might very well take a swing at you…

superfan

2. College Football: Army/Navy Game (Saturday 2:30pm from Philadelphia live on CBS); Heisman Trophy Presentation (Saturday 8pm from New York live on ESPN)

My ABSOLUTE favorite game of the year in any sport.

I doubt they’ll show this video up at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday, but if they did-I’m not sure how the Midshipmen COULDN’T be inspired…

1. NFL: Baltimore Ravens @ Houston Texans (Monday 8:30pm from Houston live on ESPN)

The Monday Night Football trip will be my first to Houston.

For anyone who has made the trip before, can you tell me anything about this place? I’m told I HAVE to hit it while I’m there…

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 14 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Friday!

It’s a Happy Friday for me…of course…because it’s Preakness weekend. I’ll eat more crabcakes and drink more Black-Eyed Susans over the next 3 days then anyone else would ever want to. In fact, I’m not even sure WHY I’ll do it, just for the hell of it I guess. What the hell else would I do this weekend? Go to Dover for the NASCAR race? No thanks…

The point of all of this is that I may be running a bit slow come Monday morning’s show. In fact, there’s a chance I’ll be running even slower than Bengie Molina (Thanks Deadspin!)…

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Luke Scott crushed grand slam to lift Orioles to late win over Mariners

In celebration of the win, a group of people stood outside the Maryland Science Center to express their joy…

smiley

It’s actually pretty impressive.

As ballpark reporter here at WNST, Glenn Clark is now 1-0. If you want to raise some funds to make sure I head out to OPACY more often, I’ll be more than willing to accept your money.

It was a LOT of fun yesterday-at least the last half hour of the game. Being more than fair to the staff of the O’s, “Field Trip Day” is a great idea. There was some actual energy in the building thanks to the 8,000 or so kids that were brought in to fill the upper deck, and when Luke Scott crushed the grand slam, the building was rocking.

I’ll just go ahead and assume that Dave Trembley already sent Don Wakamatsu a bottle of champagne today as a Thank You gesture for pulling Felix Hernandez, leaving Brandon League in after giving up a home run and loading the bases; and then watching 3rd base coach Mike Brumley send Josh Wilson when Corey Patterson was basically playing “deep short” in the 9th inning.

You take them however you can get them, folks. Especially when you’re sitting on 11.

2. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of win

Since Dave Trembley, Tom Davis and Dave Johnson were all ready to apologize for Kevin Millwood yesterday, I’ll be the one to say the truth.

He was BRUTAL yesterday. He gave up 5ER on 7 hits over 6 2/3 innings; including THREE HOME RUNS.

Mike Sweeney can’t hit ANYTHING and he hit a home run yesterday. Ichiro (who is AMAZING by the way) hit his first home run of the YEAR yesterday. Michael Saunders hasn’t even heard of Michael Saunders and he hit a home run yesterday.

It’s unacceptable for ANY pitcher to have given up a MLB-leading 10 home runs this season, but it’s especially unacceptable for the guy who is supposed to be the team’s #1 pitcher. Pitching well for 3 innings isn’t enough.

That was POOR yesterday.

Of course, over on 105.7 Tom Davis and Dave Johnson were busy dismissing the fact that Millwood has been taking over the Jeremy Guthrie role of giving up home runs this season.

And thanks to that, Tom and Dave were the winners of today’s “Apologist of the Morning” award, as selected by “The Great Arbitrator” (and defending winner) Drew Forrester today on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570.

3. Carroll County Times’ Josh Land says Dave Trembley not considering removing David Hernandez from rotation

Hopefully we can end that statement with…”for now.”

I think most of us assume that David Hernandez is best suited for some sort of long relief role; but apparently Trembley (and I’m assuming Andy MacPhail as well) want to see a bit more from him.

I know the masses in Baltimore are clamoring to see Chris Tillman and/or Jake Arrieta at the big league level. I probably think it’s about time for one of them to come up as well. BUT, I’d be willing to give it another start or two from Hernandez before I call for his head.

Does that qualify me for Apologist of the Morning?

4. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Jim Johnson to miss 8-10 weeks with elbow tear

Nothing good EVER comes from a visit to Dr. James Andrews.

Has ANYONE ever gone to Birmingham for a visit and came back saying “nope, it turns out it was just a sprain”?

My guess? Jimmie Johnson will win more NASCAR races the rest of the season than Jim Johnson will make appearances before September.

5. The Sun’s Dean Dones Jr. says Brandon Erbe had big night, Matt Hobgood struggled on farm

Before we move on from the Birds; a reminder that they open a series with the Cleveland Indians tonight at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Jeremy Guthrie faces Justin Masterson, first pitch on MASN is at 7:05pm.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s shameful that the Orioles are in town on Preakness weekend. But I’ll save that for another line of thought. Apparently Luke Jones is in Atlantic City this weekend (he does know tomorrow is Preakness, right?), but we’ll be chatting on Twitter and “Orange Crush”-ing it up as well.

6. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says Ray Lewis hosting “Ray’s Summer Days” event this weekend

I will admit that I also find the timing of this event strange, but there’s still a chance I’ll give Chuck in Bel Air a call this afternoon after the BES and stop by Perry Hall Lanes to hang out with the gang.

I’m expecting Chuck to handle John Turturro’s role tonight…

7. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland added Harcum College PF Berend Weijs to class of ’10

Ummm….yay?!?!?

Weijs averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game for the Bears last season. He doesn’t jump at me as someone who is going to really get any minutes and make any impact for Gary Williams’ team, but hey-how many teams can say they have a 6’10″ center from The Netherlands on their roster?!?!?

Do you think he knows Esha Janssen?

http://www.magxone.com/uploads/2010/05/Berber-Esha-Janssen-FHM-2.jpg

8. CSNWashington.com says Landon Milbourne worked out with Wizards yesterday

I think NBA scouts will probably see about the same thing in Landon Milbourne that we saw from him as Terrapins fans over the last few years. He really looks like he can play, but what exactly is his position?!?!?!

Milbourne might be able to play the 3 at the next level, but he’ll have to move quicker. With some more muscle he MIGHT be able to play the 4, but I’m skeptical at best.

There’s little to no chance he gets picked in the NBA Draft, but I certainly think he has a chance to go to Las Vegas and get on a Summer League roster, or end up in Training Camp with a NBA team. Sometimes all you need is a foot in the door. Ending up in Washington wouldn’t surprise me at all, as a number of former Terps (Steve Blake and Juan Dixon being the most prominent) have ended up there in the past.

9. The Sun’s Matt Bracken says Calvert Hall’s Jonathan Graham commit to Penn State

I think the fact that Jonathan is Ernie Graham’s son will leave a lot of folks asking “why isn’t he headed to College Park?”

The thing is, no one really wanted him. So…of course…he went where all of the other undesirables went. Western Pennsylvania.

LOL.

I’ll be (somewhat) pulling for Jonathan. I can’t POSSIBLY root for anything related to Happy Valley, but I’ll be happy myself if he scores 20 points in a Maryland win next November at the Bryce Jordan Center.

For the record, I’m rooting for Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper) more than I’m rooting for Jonathan Graham. Thanks Busted Coverage!

winniecooper

10. Lacrosse Magazine’s Joel Censer says Terps’ Will Yeatman can be difference maker in NCAA Tournament

AND I PRAY TO GOD HE IS!!!

I don’t think Dave Cottle’s squad will have much difficulty with Hofstra this weekend, but I do think playing Princeton AT Princeton could be trouble, and obviously Syracuse and Virginia are also looming should the Terps reach the Final Four at M&T Bank Stadium.

They’ll need a difference maker on attack. Yeatman can be that difference maker.

Here are my quick picks for the weekend…

Maryland 13, Hofstra 10
Cornell 9, Loyola 7
Duke 12, Johns Hopkins 11
Virginia 16, Mt. St. Mary’s 6

11. WNST.net’s Gary Quill says Black-Eyed Susan Stakes highlights Friday at Pimlico

I’ll be out there today. Apparently we’re supposed to wear pink.

Hopefully this young lady will be there…

pink

12. Daily Racing Form’s Jay Privman says Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver not getting overwhelming support heading into Preakness

I’ll be putting my money on Lookin At Lucky tomorrow, with Super Saver and Paddy O’Prado behind. Yep, I’m REALLY going off the board, aren’t I?

If you missed First Dude jockey Mike Smith with Drew Forrester this morning (or Governor Martin O’Malley discussing Preakness); click the Audio Tab above and head on over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault to check it out.

And finally, I leave you with this.

Jerry DePizzo from O.A.R. will be on with Rex Snider and Ray Bachman this afternoon to talk about their InfieldFest gig.

I love me some O.A.R….

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 11 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s a Happy Tuesday for me because I finally got around to seeing the video of Will Ferrell pitching for the AAA team in Round Rock, Texas. I completely forgot to post it earlier. MY BAD! I’m sure someone else in the world hasn’t seen it, so here goes…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP/STATS preview Orioles’ series opener tonight against Mariners

Here we go.

Cliff Lee faces David Hernandez (who is still looking for victory #1 this season) tonight, first pitch at Oriole Park at Camden Yards is at 7:05pm and the game can be seen on MASN2. I hope you’ll follow us on Twitter (@WNST) during the game for humorous comment; with our own Luke Jones live at OPACY.

Cliff Lee is worth going out to see pitch, and the Orioles are the home team. Plus, they’re giving away Brian Matusz t-shirts tonight.

And seriously, what the hell else are you going to do tonight? Watch Glee???

Okay…I might.

2. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Free The Birds about trying to get Birds to ‘fix’ problems

Which is really the crux of the issue here.

Would I have organized an event for this Monday night when the Orioles play the Kansas City Royals? I doubt it. Do I really want to pay money to go watch two miserable teams meet up downtown in a game that is more likely to be dubbed “unwatchable” than “ESPN Instant Classic”? Of course not.

But when it comes down to “right or wrong”, and whether or not I support a showing of fans who all stand under the umbrella of “there is still something wrong, and we NEED to fix it”-the answer is YES.

Something is STILL wrong. The fact that the minor leagues have improved under Andy MacPhail is NOT enough for me to say “okay, everything’s fine.” The team is still TERRIBLE. I do not have confidence that the leadership will do what is necessary to compete in the AL East in the immediate future. There is still a MAJOR disconnect between the organization and the fanbase, and the stadium still sits mostly empty almost every night.

There are problems. I want them fixed. I’m standing up to say something about them.

This isn’t an “anti-Peter Angelos” or “anti-Andy MacPhail” or “anti-Dave Trembley” statement for me.

This is nothing more than a “fix the problems” message from me.

When it comes to RIGHT or WRONG, I’m going to do what I feel is right. And what I feel is right is to not sit idly by and dismiss the problems of the organization; although plenty of others will.

I hope you’ll join us.

3. Fanhouse’s Steve Phillips says Orioles ‘need to give fans hope’, which can be done through managerial change

Firing the manager wouldn’t give Orioles fans hope. Matt Wieters gave Orioles fans hope. Hiring a REAL manager would give fans hope.

With all due respect to Steve Phillips, firing the manager in New York probably did give the fanbase in New York hope when he was GM of the Mets-as it represented a chance to give someone new a shot to win.

Firing Dave Trembley wouldn’t give Brad Komminsk (or whoever the Orioles brought in) a chance to win. He’s still inherit the same terrible team that has been just good enough to win 9 games thus far this season.

However, firing the manager MIGHT at least make a statement that “losing isn’t okay.”

It would be nice to see that statement made. But I certainly don’t expect it to be.

4. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Corey Patterson, Miguel Abreu had big nights for O’s on farm

Ugh…there’s an argument that even Corey Patterson represents hope when it comes to this bunch here in Charm City. Of course, Lou Montanez remains on the roster.

A couple of quick things before we move on from the Orioles:

A-Congratulations to our “Apologist of the Morning”-as Peter Schmuck was selected by “The Great Arbitrator” this morning on AM1570 WNST. Peter started to make excuses about why the Orioles might struggle against Seattle this week-pointing out that the M’s were sending both Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez to the hill.

BUT-he stopped himself-saying “I’m not making excuses for them in advance. They need to make some hay against the Mariners, Indians and Royals over the next eight days.

Of course, he couldn’t help himself…

“It’s fair to point out that they’ve probably opened the season against the toughest collection of pitching that any team has faced this year.”

It’s fair, and it’s still apologetic. That’s why we love you Pete. (Edit from GMC: We REALLY do.)

B-Hearing that Jim Johnson is going to see Dr. James Andrews is NEVER good news. I’d rather hear that he’s going to see The Undertaker. (Edit from GMC: I mean The Undertaker that has never lost at WrestleMania, not the other Undertaker. That’s never good.)

(Oh, And speaking of the WWE, I LOVE The Miz, but I’d probably fly THROUGH THE ROOF if they let Bret Hart beat him next week somehow. I know they won’t, but I would seriously FREAK OUT.)

5. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Troy Smith ‘loves it’ in Baltimore, thinks Ravens can do ‘special things’

Well, wouldn’t you know…one of those “special things” happened this morning. I added Troy to the list in our “A Month of Jerks” segment on the show. You can hear my explanation in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault right here at WNST.net.

As far as Troy the quarterback goes-this was going to happen all along. He had a 5th round tender. If another NFL team wanted him, they had their shot at him.

They didn’t.

He’s going to have to suck it up this season-knowing there’s at least a chance that Joe Flacco could get hurt and he might have to play.

(Edit from GMC: I’ve knocked on everything in this room that has wood. PLEASE dont’ let Joe Flacco get hurt!)

6. BaltimoreRavens.com says Michael Oher to appear on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”

When I heard Oher was going on ABC, I was REALLY hoping it was “Dancing With The Stars.” Not because I think the Big Man would move any better than, say, Jonathan Ogden in those GEICO commercials; but more because it would give me an excuse to see some more of Nicole Scherzinger…

nicoles

7. Thoroughred Times’ Jeff Lowe says Lookin At Lucky will run in Preakness, Martin Garcia will ride

As we talked about on the show this morning; I really feel that if the weather is nice Saturday, Lookin’ At Lucky is the horse to beat. If it’s raining and sloppy, I’ll go with Calvin Borel and Super Saver again.

If you missed Bob Baffert (or Dale Romans-trainer of Paddy O’Prado and First Dude) this morning with Drew Forrester, check out the Audio Vault. Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas is scheduled to join Drew tomorrow morning at 8:05.

8. BloodHorse says Mission Impazible will skip Preakness

And yes, this was announced via Mission Impazible’s Facebook page. The horse said…

“NEW UPDATE! My connections have decided to pass on the Preakness and target the GI-Haskell or GII-Jim Dandy this summer. I will be moving up to Belmont to train for a prep race to be determined at a later date that will set me up for the August 1st weekend. Have no worries! The name MISSION IMPAZIBLE will make headlines this summer!

Facebook is a funny place. I mean, who knew horses had Facebook pages? The only thing I used Facebook for before now was to find more pictures of Intern Genna doing questionable things…

genna

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Loyola trying for first 10 win season since 2001

As I said yesterday, the trip to Cornell will be a VERY difficult task for the Greyhounds; especially given how they played in their games against Denver and Johns Hopkins to close the season.

More difficult task? Getting me to stop looking at bikini pics of Audrina Patridge over at Guyism…

audrina

10. Inside Lacrosse’s Terry Foy says no timeline for Tony Seaman decision at Towson

Hear, I’ll make this easy for Mike Hermann.

Bring him back.

There, that wasn’t so hard-now was it?

There’s a chance that another coach (Paul Cantabene comes to mind) could have success with the Tigers, but I am by no means convinced of it. The CAA is a tough league, and having to recruit against the likes of Hopkins, Maryland, Loyola and UMBC in state ALONE makes the gig even tougher.

Seaman took Towson to a Final Four.

I’d stick with him.

11. Frederick News-Post’s Greg Swatek says Robert Burke introduced as new hoops coach at Mt. St. Mary’s

History says being the man (Milan Brown) to replace THE MAN (Jim Phelan) is EXTREMELY difficult. Of course, Brown actually had some success replacing Jim Phelan in Emmittsburg, which should help Burke make the transition as Mountaineers head coach. His background includes stops as an assistant at American and Georgetown.

You know what’s more difficult than replacing “The Man”?

Convincing me that I should be doing ANYTHING besides looking at pictures of Jason Kidd WAG Hope Dworaczyk that I guess are from Playboy and were posted by Busted Coverage…

hope

And finally, I leave you with this.

The Cincinnati Cyclones and Reading Royals got into a fight. I approve.

10. Swimming: Charlotte UltraSwim (Friday-Sunday 6pm from Charlotte live on Universal Sports)

Do I have a “Michael Phelps is headed back to the pool so I should make a pot joke” joke prepared? I do not.

Instead, I pass this along. I don’t know who Chloe Sutton is (you know, other than the fact that she’s a swimmer participating in this Charlotte event), but I think I like her…

sutton

…you know, she seems nice.

9. Pro Wrestling: TNA Sacrifice (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View)

Reasons to watch a TNA Pay-Per-View:

A. Rob Van Dam is AWESOME.

B. Jeff Hardy is also AWESOME.

C. The chicks are hot.

D. WOOOO!!!!!

flair

8. Auto Racing: NASCAR Autism Speaks 400 (Sunday 1pm from Dover live on FOX)

If you’re piling on the Rex Snider bus and headed up to The Monster Mile this weekend, please say hello to this guy for me while you’re there…

Oh, and then ask Dad to try to remember to wear pants on Mother’s Day next year…geez.

7. NHL Playoffs: Blackhawks/Canucks (Game 6 Tuesday 9:30pm from Vancouver live on VERSUS, Game 7 if necessary Thursday 8pm from Chicago live on VERSUS); Canadiens/Penguins (Game 7 Wednesday 7pm from Pittsburgh live on VERSUS); Bruins/Flyers (Game 6 Wednesday 8pm from Philadelphia live on VERSUS, Game 7 if necessary Friday 7pm from Boston live on VERSUS)

You mean to tell me the Habs have a chance to make BOTH the fans in the Steel City AND the fans in Washington completely miserable in the same postseason?!?!?

I have never supported anything from Canada they way I now support the Canadiens. Like my pal Sam Angell said via Facebook, do it for Youppi!!!

youppi

6. NBA Playoffs: Cavaliers/Celtics (Game 5 Tuesday 8pm from Cleveland live on TNT, Game 6 Thursday 8pm from Boston live on ESPN, Game 7 if necessary Sunday 3:30pm from Cleveland live on ABC)

Boy, the 2nd round of the NBA Playoffs have sure been…uhh…dreadful???

I was gonna root for the Atlanta Hawks because Joe Smith is down there-but…apparently no one informed them that they beat the Bucks and actually ADVANCED to the next round. You would have thought a courtesy call would have at least been nice.

5. MMA-Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery (Saturday 10pm from St. Louis live on Showtime), Bellator Fighting Championships XVIII (Thursday 8pm from Monroe, LA live on Fox Sports Net); Boxing-Amir Khan vs. Paulie Malignaggi (Saturday 9:45pm from New York live on HBO)

Look, I’m well aware that he lost to Fedor, but let’s be honest here…he DIDN’T lose my heart. I LOVE “The Grim.”

4. NCAA Lacrosse Tournament: Hofstra @ Maryland (Saturday 12pm from Byrd Stadium live on ESPNU), Johns Hopkins @ Duke (Saturday 12pm from Durham live on ESPN), Loyola @ Cornell (Saturday 2:30pm from Ithica, NY live on ESPNU), Mt. St. Mary’s @ Virginia (Saturday 7:30pm from Charlottesville live on ESPNU); D3 Tournament: Cabrini/Denison winner @ Stevenson (Saturday 1pm Caves Athletic Complex)

I don’t mind that the Terps got Hofstra in Round 1 at all. Folks on Long Island are fairly easy to dislike, so I’ve got that under control. But…Hopkins playing Duke? Is there any way BOTH teams can lose???

(Edit from GMC: Of COURSE I’d prefer the Blue Devils lost, I just have to keep up appearances as a Blue Jays-hating fan of the Terrapins. It’s how things work.)

So with that in mind…you’re going down, Duke!!!

3. Preakness Week Events: Pee Wee Preakness (Tuesday 11am Federal Hill), Preakness Frog Hop (Wednesday 12pm Patterson Park), Preakness Alibi Breakfast (Thursday 9:30am Pimlico), Preakness Crab Derby (Thursday 12pm Lexington Market), Hot Air Balloon Festival (Thursday & Friday 3pm Turf Valley), Preakness Parade (Friday 8:30pm Inner Harbor)

This is what I know…I’ll be enjoying about 3-4,765 of THESE this week…

And while we don’t have a WHOLE lot of things going on better than the Kentucky Derby; I do know this much…

EVERYTHING to like on this list…

First of all, the Maryland Jockey Club couldn’t have done better than O.A.R. EVER for Saturday…

Plus, Zac Brown Band is pretty good too…

And Mr. Greengenes can even DO O.A.R……

And as far as Sister Hazel is concerned…I mean…come on…

1. Preakness (Saturday 6pm from Pimlico live on NBC), Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (Friday 5pm from Pimlico live on HRTV), Preakness Post Position Draw (Wednesday 5pm Turfside Terrace live on HRTV)

I’ll save you my “I’m picking Sarah Jessica Parker this year” comments. I mean, I AM…but it’s completely irrelevant.

The only real question left for me is whether or not to wear the same attire to Pimlico Saturday that I wore to Churchill Downs. Your call…

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 May 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday!

It’s a Happy Monday for me because I checked out Carolina Liar last night at Recher Theatre, and they were quite good. I will admit to having only known “I’m Not Over” and “Show Me What I’m Looking For” before the show, but I was really sleeping on them. They’re REALLY good. It’s a shame only about 30-40 others of you decided to come to the show.

Check out “Beautiful World.” It’s pretty good…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP says Orioles got nothing going against Nick Blackburn in 6-0 loss to Twins

Ugh. Nick Blackburn? He didn’t even throw a strikeout!

What do I do here? Do I lament another Orioles loss? Do I yell and scream and try to figure out why the team is so freaking dreadful offensively, or do I say something along the lines of “another stellar effort from the Orioles?”

I’m not sure I have the energy today.

The Birds took 2 of 4 at Target Field, which wouldn’t seem so bad if it weren’t for the fact that they really only mustered any offense in ONE of the 4 games (which stunningly came against Francisco Liriano). Of course, Luke Scott DID hit a home run Saturday night that landed somewhere in Fargo, which was just one more example of MASN’s awesome timing in their “I Want to Be Luke Scott’s Bat!” campaign.

Ugh.

2. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of loss

I told my mom we couldn’t go out for lunch yesterday; but we instead needed to celebrate Mother’s Day at my house, so that I could keep the Orioles game on in the background.

Mom had a couple of reactions. First she said “Why? The Orioles are terrible.”

Moms really DO know everything, don’t they?

Her second response was “Why is this game so important in particular?”

“Well mom, Brian Matusz is pitching. He’s the next Tom Glavine!”

Being the baseball fan she is, mom understood that she couldn’t miss the chance to see a pitcher like that. About halfway through a piece of BBQ chicken she looked back at me and said “THIS IS THE PITCHER YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT?!?!?!?”

Sorry mom.

It was a tough day for Brian yesterday-but things will get better. (Edit from GMC: Things WILL get better, right?) He’s much too good for me to be too worked up yesterday.

Besides, I spent the better part of the day yesterday recovering from a Betty White hangover anyway. The “Thank You For Being a Friend” bit was FAR from the best thing they did, it was just the only clip available on YouTube…

3. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Adam Jones, Orioles have hit ‘brick wall’

I brought this up with Drew Forrester this morning on AM1570 WNST, but I think it’s worth repeating.

It’s time for him to take the trip to Norfolk.

I understand that he’s the face of the future for this team, and I understand that his athleticism is unquestionable.

But he’s jaded, and he isn’t trying right now.

It’s not JUST that he isn’t hitting. It’s not JUST that he’s figured out ways to misplay balls into triples. It’s the laziness he’s shown on fly balls with runners on 3rd base that says to me he just doesn’t really want to give it that much of an effort.

A run-in with Dave Trembley early in the season is well circulated, and not surprising. It’s partially the team’s fault for having a lame-duck manager. It’s more the team’s fault for not putting a team together that would actually inspire players to want to win.

But it is STILL Adam Jones’ fault for not trying. It’s shameful. And there should be a price to pay for it. I understand that the team “isn’t trying to win anyway”, and that some fans think they should just stick it out with Adam until he gets it turned around.

But I will NEVER sign off on a move that is made because a team “isn’t trying to win anyway.”

4. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Birds could make roster moves now that road trip is over

The most obvious move to be made would be to send Lou Montanez back to the Tides and bring up Corey Patterson. YAY! COREY PATTERSON!!!

For the record, I’d be in complete support of that move. It’s just a little frightening to think about this team improving by having Corey Patterson on the roster.

Luke Scott should be a candidate to be jettisoned, but I assume he won’t be. Garrett Atkins got a few hits last week, but I’m pretty sure I’d still prefer Garrett Gomez to him.

But if the Orioles REALLY wanted to make a statement, I think they should add Collien Fernandes (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

collien

5. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Chris Tillman excelled, Zach Britton struggled for O’s on farm

Before we move on from the Orioles, a couple more things to mention…

-Congratulations to our Apologist of the Morning-as selected by The Great Arbitrator this morning on “The Morning Reaction.” The winner was “Heath” from Dempsey’s Army, who despite being too gutless to put a last name on what he writes-took the time to declare that “Free The Birds” was nothing more than a marketing/publicity stunt from Nestor Aparicio.

Keep believing that crap instead of holding an organization’s feet to the fire for becoming a civic embarrassment over the last 13 years. Keep that up. It makes plenty of sense. The 1,500+ people who have already joined the Facebook group probably support the theory too. You’re “on watch.”

-The Orioles are off tonight before opening a 3 game set with the Seattle Mariners tomorrow night at Camden Yards. A reminder that we’re just a week away from “Free The Birds”, which goes down Monday night when the Orioles host the Kansas City Royals. If Chris Stoner makes it out, the first beer is on me.

6. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says John Harbaugh (at least sorta) believes Jared Gaither battling toe/foot injury, not skipping practice out of protest

What an ordeal this has become.

“The Bills are interested.”

“Ozzie Newsome says he hasn’t gotten any offers.”

“Maybe Marshal Yanda could play Right Tackle.”

“The team can’t make a deal now that Ramon Harewood is hurt.”

“This is all Drew Rosenhaus’ doing.”

“Maybe Gaither really is hurt. I mean, he does have an injury history.”

“The Ravens probably should have just left Michael Oher at RT for the season and tried to win the Super Bowl.”

“Why don’t they just sign Flozell Adams?”

My head is SPINNING. My guess is that Jared Gaither IS dealing with something foot-related, but probably COULD have practiced through it out in Owings Mills this weekend if he had wanted to.

My other guess is that Jared Gaither WILL still be on this team come September 13 against the New York Jets. I just don’t see another NFL team (be it Buffalo, Washington, Oakland, Denver or anyone else) stepping up and making an offer that the Ravens would deem worthwhile to trade away a bookend tackle from a team that expects to compete for the AFC North title this season.

Of course, a first round pick could change ALL of that.

7. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ngata tore pec in Pro Bowl, will miss another month and a half to two months

Of course, there was quite a bit of hullaballoo when The Sun (and then linked to PFT) misquoted Ngata as saying it happened when he was “trying to hurt someone” in Miami. Ngata had actually said he was trying to NOT hurt anyone.

You can hear from Ngata in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault right here at WNST.net. You can also hear from John Harbaugh, Anquan Boldin, Jim Zorn, Cam Cameron, Greg Mattison, Ray Lewis, Joe Flacco, Terrell Suggs and others this weekend from Ravens mini-camp.

OR….OR….you can look at this picture of Madison Welch that I found over at Guyism. I think either would be an acceptable use of your time…

madison

8. ProFootballTalk/NBC Sports’ Mike Florio says part of North Ave. to be renamed “Ray Lewis Way”

Spare me the North Ave. related jokes, PLEASE. I get it. There IS humor there, I understand it.

This won’t be the last honor Ray Lewis receives in the city of Baltimore. He’ll end up in the Ring of Honor, and he’ll get a statue out near Johnny Unitas, etc. etc. etc.

Plus…you know…he’ll always be in our hearts. For whatever that’s worth.

9. The Sun’s Edward Lee says Maryland will face Hofstra, Hopkins will face Duke, Loyola will face Cornell, Mt. St. Mary’s will face Virginia in Round 1 of Men’s lacrosse NCAA Tournament

Couple of things:

-Despite the emotions surrounding the Cavaliers lacrosse program, MSM won’t have any chance of pulling off the Round 1 stunner. In fact, UVa has a pretty easy run to the Final Four, so you can expect to see them at M&T Bank Stadium. There will be plenty of scrutiny surrounding their program, but their overwhelming talent will outweigh those outside factors-at least until they get to the semifinals.

-Dave Cottle and Maryland will (rightly) gripe about getting the #3 seed instead of the 2-which went to Syracuse. In fairness to Cottle, the Terps face a VERY tough Hofstra team in Round 1, then have a likely showdown with Princeton AT Princeton in Round 2. That will be BRUTAL.

-If Pierce Bassett continues to play well and Johns Hopkins builds on what they did in wins over Towson and Loyola to end the season-they’ll have a shot to beat Duke. I’m not saying they will, but they’ll have a shot. That grouping (Duke/Hopkins and Carolina/Delaware) is much more open than most lax fans will give it credit for being. It’s easy to presume Duke or North Carolina ends up in the Final Four-and they probably will-but the Blue Jays and Hens have just enough talent (I got to see the Hens’ Curtis Dickson live for the first time this weekend-WOW) to make things interesting.

-Loyola will have a hard time grinding out a win at Cornell, especially if they play like they played down the stretch against Denver and JHU. They have the offensive talent, but they cannot take the ridiculous shots I saw them take at Ridley Athletic Complex Saturday.

10. Inside Lacrosse’s Tommy Kehoe says Stevenson #2 seed, Salisbury #1 seed in D3 Tournament

I’ll say it so that Paul Cantabene doesn’t have to.

This is ridiculous.

The Mustangs are the #1 team in the country and a #2 seed in their region. I understand that the seeding probably has more to do with geography than lacrosse, but the ‘Stangs and Sea Gulls shouldn’t be forced to face each other until the NCAA Championship Game.

Instead, for the Stangs to have a shot at playing for the national title, they’ll likely have to try to win a second game AT Salisbury en route.

Not cool.

These are the best teams in the country. They should be able to play for the national title.

Not much else to say about it.

11. LaxPower.com says Maryland will face Marist, Navy will face North Carolina and Towson will face Virginia in Round 1 of women’s lacrosse NCAA Tournament

You have to feel for the Tigers, as THE ENTIRE COUNTRY will be rooting against them when they face the ‘Hoos in the first game since Yeardley Love’s tragic death.

Maryland goes into the Tournament as the favorite, and it would be nice to see the Terrapins claim the title for the first time since 2001.

Hell-it would be nice to see ANYONE besides Northwestern win the thing. What the hell do they know about lacrosse in Chicago anyway???

12. Maryland Jockey Club says Mission Impazible took to Facebook to declare himself a possible Preakness starter

Holy crap a horse has a Facebook page? PLEASE DON’T LET MY GIRLFRIEND (You know her, “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet”) FIND OUT ABOUT THIS!!!!

I was going to check out Mission Impazible’s page, but I was too busy looking at Seanna Mitchell’s page (Thanks Barstool Sports!)…

seanna

And finally, I leave you with this.

Here’s the Golf Channel explaining why Tiger Woods “pulled out” (love it) of The Players’ Championship yesterday. If you haven’t seen the clip yesterday-it was SUPPOSED to be “bulging disc.” It eventually was…

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 13 April 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s a Happy Tuesday for me because after the Orioles’ most recent debacle last night, I flipped over to Food Network just in time to see Guy Fieri head over to Fells Point and check out BOP Brick Oven Pizza. Someone told me the episode was 2 years old…as if I’d care. After watching, I’d like to MOVE IN…

pizza

I remember being in Fells Point one night to celebrate my friend Jewlz Shaffer’s birthday once during a time when I had sworn off things like pizza, and the girl I was “dating” shoved a slice of BOP Pizza in my face (I don’t think it was the kind with the french fries on top, but it was GOOD), and I changed my mind about my entire plans re: pizza. I was back off the wagon FAST.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Matt Garza outdueled Jeremy Guthrie has Rays beat Birds again

Would it be LESS painful to watch Matt Garza outduel Jeremy Guthrie if Garza DIDN’T have that awful thing on his chin?

The shame of what Garza has done to the Birds over these two starts is that Guthrie has actually looked more like the 2007-2008 version of himself. You remember that version, right? The version that posted a 3.70 ERA in ’07 and 3.63 ERA in ’08 but yet managed just a 17-17 record for the 2 seasons?

This is the ultimate issue with Guthrie. Even when he HAS shown himself to be a particularly capable MLB pitcher (and his 4.05 ERA thus far this season is a sign of just that), he’s never shown himself as a pitcher who knows how to WIN.

It’s one thing for a pitcher to have a respectable ERA and to gut out innings. It’s another thing to be able to rise to an occassion and match your opponent when he’s on his game. The Rays weren’t hitting the cover off the ball last night, and the Orioles really COULD have used a start where their pitcher gave them 7 scoreless innings.

It might take a 1-0 win at some point to get things turned around.

The point is that for those who say things like “what more can you ask for from the guy?”, the answer is “winning.”

Like Mike Gundy said, “this isn’t intermurals.” This is “Division 1 football.”

Or “the AL East” in this case.

And as if the team NEEDED more good news-Brian Roberts WAS officially placed on the DL yesterday as expected, so…yay!

2. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of another loss

The number that sticks out from last night? I’d say the combined 0-8 with 2 strikeouts and 6 LOB that we saw from Miguel Tejada and Garrett Atkins probably sticks out a bit.

“We’re gonna grow the arms and buy the bats” said Andy MacPhail at Orioles Fanfest back in 2008.

There are your bats.

Would be nice to see a cleanup hitter in this lineup.

I couldn’t help but notice that there were a lot of people on Facebook (just search “Glenn Clark” and feel free to add me as a friend) and Twitter (follow us @WNST) who were calling for Dave Trembley’s job last night…as if Dave Trembley put together this puzzle of pieces that just don’t fit.

For some reason (presumably because he has a “plan”), Orioles fans appear all to ready to give Andy MacPhail a pass for this.

HE put the team together. HE was responsible for not addressing the need for better RBI bats. HE was responsible for not addressing the need for a TRUE number 1 starter who could win a 1-0 game when the bats were in a slump.

And HE was responsible for allowing the manager of this team to go into a season as a lame duck.

Should the Orioles fire Dave Trembley? Why bother now?

If they wanted to improve, they wouldn’t have let the manager go into the season as a lame duck. They wouldn’t have put him in a place where he CAN’T try to light a fire under the asses of guys like Adam Jones and Nick Markakis-who have been giving half efforts early on.

If you’re angry about this team, this year; be willing to place blame on the shoulders of Andy MacPhail. If you don’t think Dave Trembley is much of a manager-you’re probably right; but don’t blame him for THIS team, THIS season.

3. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says record low crowd took in Orioles’ loss at OPACY

Luke offered visual evidence of the crowd with this photo…

opacy

Look, I can’t blame Orioles fans for not going to the ballpark. There were PLENTY of other things going on last night. For example…

1-
2-
3-

Well look…maybe everyone knew that these two gals were going to be facing each other in a “Leather & Lace Match” on TNA iMPACT! last night on SpikeTV…

velvetsky
angelinalove

And if that’s the case, I get it!

(Edit from GMC: I KNOW why Orioles fans aren’t showing up, trust me. But it’s more fun this way.)

4. Fanhouse’s Paul Bourdett thinks Mike Gonzalez will be ‘just fine’

Which means Paul Bourdett joins our pal Chris Stoner, who claimed his 2nd “Apologist of the Morning” award today from Drew Forrester on AM1570 WNST for his quip via Facebook…

When you see (Felix) Pie today, do you think back to early 2009 and all those that vocally knocked him? Does it make you laugh, when those same people are commenting in 2010 about (Mike) Gonzalez?

Well Chris, in a word, no.

The reason people “vocally knocked” Felix Pie is because Felix Pie hasn’t BEEN ANY GOOD since coming to Baltimore. A couple months of decent play when the season was out of hand does not mean he isn’t a .270 hitter with ONE stolen base and a walk to strikeout ratio of 25:61 during his tenure in Charm City.

If Mike Gonzalez is going to “bounce back” and be as effective as Felix Pie, he’ll be gone in June.

I’m personally PRAYING that he’s much better than that. But nothing about his track record leads me to EXPECT that.

5. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Brandon Erbe loser, Tim Bascom winner for O’s on farm

And before we move on from the Orioles, we’ll remind everyone that they’ll send Brian Matusz to the bump tonight (he’s the only pitcher to have won a game this season) to face Jeff Niemann. First pitch is at 7:05, and the game is on MASN.

Plus, they’re giving away Matt Wieters t-shirts, so who knows-maybe there will be 12,000 of you there?!?

Also, check out THIS STORY from the Orlando Sentinel about former Orioles teammates helping to raise money for Mike Cuellar’s funeral. It is a sad story, but it is wonderful to hear about the help former teammates of given him. Hopefully the organization has done or will do something similar.

6. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says John Beck, Billy Cundiff signed 1 year tenders as RFA’s

“ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!?!?!?!”

Look-I get it, there’s nothing exciting about Billy Cundiff signing his 1 year tender. It DOESN’T mean the Ravens aren’t still interested in a kicker. It’s nothing more than part of the RFA process. But it did happen, so there’s that.

You know what IS exciting? The picture of Elsa Benitez that Busted Coverage dug up from GQ Mexico…

elsabenitez

(Edit from GMC: Clearly I should have paid more attention in Spanish class.)

7. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Oregon TE Ed Dickson, Iowa TE Tony Moeaki, Florida C Maurkice Pouncey amongst NFL Draft prospects who have visited/will visit 1 Winning Drive

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but the Ravens are in the market for a TE.

I wonder if this one is available…

gonzalez

For the record, if they’re a TE prospect in the Draft this year, I’m taking their name seriously. Whether it’s Michael Hoomanawanui from Illinois, Anthony McCoy from USC, Dennis Pitta from BYU, Dorin Dickerson from Pitt, Jimmy Graham from Miami, Jermain Gresham from Oklahoma or WHOEVER IT IS.

If they’re a draft prospect and they play TE, they might be headed towards Owings Mills shortly.

8. SI’s Peter King says Ravens should trade Jared Gaither to Cowboys

Peter King’s point is valid. The Ravens are in a tough place where they have to determine whether or not they should just go ahead and take something a bit less than what they might want (Dallas would be giving them a low 2nd round pick); knowing that it is particularly unlikely they will be able to hold onto Gaither considering they’re grooming Oher as their future LT.

All of it makes sense.

But Gaither could still help this team win a Super Bowl this season.

That’s the catch, and it isn’t changing any time soon. Short of being bowled over by someone, Ozzie Newsome IS going to be faced with a very difficult decision in this process.

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens has Loyola, Maryland, Hopkins, Mt. St. Mary’s all IN NCAA Tournament

The surprise here (sorta) is that Johns Hopkins is back in the picture-but Patrick (and others) are presumably figuring that Hopkins will have some success down the stretch with their in-state schedule (Navy, Loyola and Towson are still on the schedule after they face Maryland at M&T Bank Stadium Saturday night); and I think that’s a pretty fair assumption to make.

Of course, I’ve been wrong about assumptions before. Like when I assumed that there was no way the pictures of Jennifer Anniston at Guyism.com yesterday would be hot.

aniston

10. Inside Lacrosse’s Quint Kessenich has Terps 4th, Greyhounds 8th, JHU 14th, Towson 20th in power rankings

Tony Seaman’s crew has REALLY responded thanks to goalie Travis Love. And with no offense to him or any other Tigers…I myself prefer the great Dude Love…

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 12 April 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday!

It’s a Happy Monday for me because Tina Fey hosted Saturday Night Live. And when they weren’t bust trying to shove Justin Beiber or Kristen Wiig down my throat (Wiig is TERRIBLE by the way), the show was actually very funny. Especially this…

…if she runs for President, they have to bring her back as a permanent cast member, right???

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Blue Jays got to Kevin Millwood late to finish off weekend sweep

So…how was YOUR weekend?

To call a weekend sweep at the hands of Cito Gaston and the Jays “frustrating” wouldn’t do justice. To call it “unthinkable” would be much more appropriate.

I don’t know how else to say this. When you don’t REALLY try to put together a winning team, you’re not going to get a winning team. They don’t just come together by accident. When you decide that instead of going out and getting a REAL third baseman to replace Melvin Mora-you’ll just go get a stop gap to fill time until Josh Bell is ready, you get a converted SS who gobbles one up every now and then.

Should Miguel Tejada have made that play in the 8th inning? Probably. But it was a very hard hit ball and left him in a tough spot. It is forgiveable if it happens in the 2nd inning-but in that spot, it turned the entire game.

Not that Chone Figgins would make the Orioles winners (or even that he would have been a good signing for this team), but would he have been able to make that play there? Probably. Would other third basemen have been able to make that play there? Probably.

But when you just sign SOMEONE and assume they can play the position, or hit at a certain spot in the lineup, or fill a certain role in the bullpen or rotation-this is what you get.

“Woefully incomplete.”

Just knowing that Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Brian Matusz are pretty good is good enough for some people. I want a team that is WINNING, or is trying damn hard to do just that.

2. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of loss

Alex Gonzalez hit 2 home runs yesterday.

Alex FREAKING Gonzalez hit 2 home runs yesterday.

On in other words, as many as this guy hit in his CAREER…

quiroz

(Edit from GMC: You’re thinking to yourself, “that’s a strange Guillermo Quiroz reference”…and it is! But I literally thought to myself “what former O’s might only have 2 career home runs?”, and my 1st guess was Guillermo Quiroz. Unbelievably, I was right. Do I get some sort of medal for that?)

3. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Birds continuing to lose ‘game of inches’

You know what else is a game of inches?

hungry hippos

It means a lot to a lot of people that the Orioles have been fairly close in some of these games. As if “near misses” might somehow count as half of a win, or a third of a win. It’s as if by losing 4 or 5 close games early in the season, they actually get credit for an extra win or 2.

I mean seriously, what kind of lame; 2nd rate sport would give a team credit for LOSING, just because it was a close game and maybe tied late?

nhl

Oh. Right.

4. Fanhouse’s Andrew Johnson says Brian Roberts likely headed to DL, Justin Turner to come up from Norfolk

What’s that quote again? The rich just keep getting richer?

Julio Lugo was asked for his thoughts on the Roberts injury, and he was rumored to have said “this is the best news that has ever happened.”

(Edit from GMC: He may or may not have actually said that. But you KNOW he was thinking it.)

Look, NO ONE is crying for ol’ B-Rob; considering THIS is what he’ll be doing for the next 15 days…

videogames

You thought I was going to post a picture of his wife in some form of undress. I love to keep you on your toes.

5. The Sun’s Kevin Cowherd says Dave Trembley shouldn’t be blamed for Orioles’ problems

But he’s going to be. If 1-5 balloons to 9-23 through this brutal stretch to start the season, you better believe that Andy MacPhail will have to think about walking into Dave Trembley’s office and saying “sorry skip, we just have to do something to shake things up.”

Look, I don’t REALLY think Dave Trembley is much of a manager. I think he was the guy that would work for a cheap and be a good soldier while the team sold this “2011 plan” to fans. I don’t know how ANY player in the clubhouse can really take him seriously, considering the ORGANIZATION doesn’t take him seriously enough to commit to him and extend him moving forward.

If he tried lighting a fire under one of these guys asses, there’s no reason for that player to not start chuckling. “Really, skip? I’m Adam Jones. I’ll blow gum if I want to. Haven’t you seen my t-shirt?”

Before I move on from the Orioles, a reminder that they’re back in action tonight (mostly because they have to) at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. First pitch against the Rays is at 7:05pm, and the game can be seen on MASN2. Jeremy Guthrie faces Matt Garza, meaning we’ll get to see more of that strange growth on Garza’s chin…

And congratulations to Damon Yaffe from The Fan for winning today’s “Apologist of the Morning” award. Damon said Sunday that despite the 1-5 start, he “can’t divert (his) attention from some of the positives.” Noble. Those positives you ask?

-”Camden Yards is still a gem”

Okay, sure…

-”Orioles fans are still passionate and hungry”

Right…

-”Matt Wieters”

Now we’re talking…

-”The Young Arms”

Would like to see some more…

-”MASN really taking flight”

And NOW is where I spit out my Vitamin Water.

“MASN really taking flight?” We’re talking about a network that spends a better part of their day simulcasting ANOTHER network that I already have on my Comcast or Xfinity or whatever the hell it’s called these days.

“MASN really taking flight?” This is a network that is so dreadful, a simulcast of Scott Garceau’s radio show is considered the best programming they have to offer!

As I was saying to Drew Forrester this morning on AM1570 WNST, I was watching the “East Carolina Basketball Show” and then a lacrosse game between Denver and Quinnipiac over the weekend on MASN and thinking to myself, “you know, this network is really starting to take flight.”

Christ.

6. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says California (Pennsylvania) CB Terrence Johnson visited 1 Winning Drive

The Ravens have also looked into Indiana (Pennsylvania) CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah; so if you’re a Cornerback playing at Kentucky (Pennsylvania), Kansas (Pennsylvania) or Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania), be ready for a call from Ozzie Newsome. Corners from California, Indiana, Kentucky or Kansas need not apply.

Being serious, Johnson is a 5’9″ CB who most NFL Draft analysts don’t believe will hear his name called. Just because the Ravens have hosted a player, it doesn’t mean they’re going to take him. And on the flip side, just because the Ravens haven’t shown too much interest in a player, it doesn’t mean they won’t pick him (Lardarius Webb says hello).

The biggest thing Terrence Johnson has going for him is that he was teammates with former Maryland QB Josh Portis at California PA. If anything about Portis rubbed off on him, he’ll be REALLY GOOD in every game that doesn’t count.

7. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Steelers helped Ravens by trading Santonio Holmes to Jets

The “Santoniowastradedfor _____” hastag thread on Twitter last night (follow us @WNST) was HILARIOUS. Before I saw the thread had started, I wondered why the Ravens hadn’t offered Frank Walker for Holmes.

(Edit from GMC: I KNOW Walker isn’t under contract. This is shtick. Please work with me people.)

After seeing that the thread HAD started, my suggestion was…”#santoniowastradedfor Mike Gonzalez.”

It would have been worth about as much to Pittsburgh as a 5th round pick, right?

I’m not sure why the Rooneys just decided to give up on Holmes-who is a HELL of a talent. I know he’s a bit of an ass-clown, but, um…..have they seen their quarterback or their kicker???

8. Waterbury Republican American’s Kevin Litten says those who knew Jordan Williams in Connecticut didn’t all expect his success in College Park

In a (semi) related story, I heard there were new pictures of Heidi Montag in a bikini linked in over at Busted Coverage, and I thought “you know, she’s probably not that good looking…”

Sometimes, we’re all wrong about certain things.

To be serious, this is a great read. It includes stories about racist threats Williams’ family received during his high school career in Torrington, and how the community has sort of rallied around him now that he’s had success with the Terrapins. Definitely worth the read.

9. Inside Lacrosse has Terps 4th, Loyola 9th, Hopkins 16th in Nike/IL Top 20 poll

Here’s a look at my “OldLineLax7 Poll”, since I feel as though everything I do is more important than everything everyone else does.

1-Maryland
2-Loyola
3-Johns Hopkins
4-Towson
5-Navy
6-Mt. St. Mary’s (I get it. They’re 6-3 and 2-0 in the MAAC. But do I REALLY think they’re better than Towson or Navy???)
7-UMBC

This all builds up to Loyola-Geogetown, Army-Navy and Maryland-Hopkins Saturday. I’ll be wandering around Charm City with Patrick Stevens (@D1scourse) watching the games. This is fun to us, people.

10. The Sun says Baltimore Mariners improved to 5-0 with win over New Jersey Revolution

It’s not that I’m NOT interested in this. It’s just that I’d be MORE interested if it involved “J-Woww” from “Jersey Shore.”

jwoww

And finally, I leave you with this…

“The Greatest Song of All Time This Week” for this week? Probably not a popular choice, but “Bumpin’ Fresh” by Virginia Coalition. It’s a WIN.
