Clark Honored For Leading Tigers To Win Over Richmond

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.  – Senior linebacker Telvion Clark (Granby H.S./Norfolk, Va.) of Towson University has been named as the FCS National Defensive Player of the Week, it has been announced by The Sports Network.

Clark is the first Tiger football player ever to be named as the FCS National Defensive Player of the Week

Honored as the co-winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week award, Clark led the No. 7 Tigers to a 48-32 victory at the University of Richmond on Saturday. It was the Tigers’ ninth consecutive road victory, a streak that started with a 49-35 win at Villanova on Oct. 27, 2012.

Named as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, Clark led the Tigers with a career-high 16 tackles in their win at Richmond.

In addition, he made one of the biggest plays of the game when he sacked Richmond quarterback Michael Strauss,forced a fumble, recovered the fumble and ran 32 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a commanding 41-18 lead with 12:19 remaining in the game.

In the win over Richmond, Clark also recovered another fumble and had two tackles for lost yardage.

With 88 tackles in nine games, Clark is second in the CAA in tackles. He also has four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Clark is tied for the CAA lead in both categories. He also ranks 13th in the CAA with eight tackles for lost yardage.

The Tigers, who are 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the CAA, will return to action on Saturday night when they host No. 21 Delaware at 7:00 p.m.

Maryland CB Hendy earns national defensive award

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of Maryland junior defensive back A.J. Hendy has been named The Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week as announced by The Walter Camp Football Foundation on Sunday.

On Saturday against West Virginia, Hendy recovered two fumbles and returned an interception 26 yards for Maryland’s second touchdown of the game as the Terps defeated the Mountaineers, 37-0. The interception is Hendy’s second of his career. Both of his interceptions have been returned for touchdowns. Against NC State on Nov. 26, 2011, Hendy intercepted his first career pass and returned it 32 yards for a score.

Hendy and the Maryland defense forced six West Virginia turnovers on Sunday and held the Mountaineers to 175 yards of total offense. It is the first shutout for the Terps since blanking Wake Forest on Oct. 18, 2008 (26-0), and its first shutout of West Virginia since defeating the Mountaineers 33-0 on Sept. 18, 1999.

Hendy is the first Maryland player to win Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors.

Maryland travels to Tallahassee to face No. 8 Florida State on Oct. 5 in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
