What happened during Dave Trembley’s press conference last night on MASN really is unacceptable, and DT had every right to act accordingly. Some member of the Orioles’ Public Relations staff should have gone to the hallway in an attempt to quiet the people standing there.

It’s a frustrating season for Dave. Would the Orioles be better with a different manager? Probably not MUCH better….they’re just a bad baseball team. But I understand Dave’s frustration.

Did Derrick Mason retire yesterday? Yes. Will Derrick Mason remain retired? I’d lean to no. Not because I know anything, that’s just an emotion I have.

But I know this much. The Ravens needed to address the WR position BEFORE Derrick Mason announced his retirement. They have nothing under contract beyond this season, and I didn’t think the group was a Super Bowl-caliber group BEFORE Mason’s retirement.

I’ve tossed Plaxico Burress’ name around a lot recently because I have talked to a NUMBER of people who have played and worked with Plaxico in the past; and they’ve all basically told me the same thing….

“He’s not the smartest guy in the world, but he’s not an a**hole.”

The basic vibe I get from those in the NFL world is that Burress is a guy who people like having on their team. He’s not a cancer, he’s not divisive, and he’s not going to tear your locker room apart.

But Burress is clearly a question mark based around the fact that his ability to actually see the field is up in the air. Should Plaxico be suspended for the first 8 games of the NFL season (that’s just a number, no fact to it whatsoever), would the Ravens benefit from hoping the guy can just slide in and put up numbers in the 2nd half of the season?

I think there’s an argument that the Ravens truly believe Joe Flacco has improved to the point where he can make the players around him better. That’s not insane. Miles Austin wasn’t a guy you’d pencil in as a reliable WR, but the Cowboys trusted Tony Romo could make him better. That move certainly appears to be working. Can we just assume that Flacco will make Demetrius Williams or Marcus Smith better?

I’m not going to go out on that limb just yet.

Remember how everyone spent the week talking about how LeBron James was a better player than Kobe Bryant? Can I remind you of a couple things???

LeBron James might go down as one of the greatest players in NBA History. But Kobe Bryant already has a Hall of Fame resume. Maybe getting ahead of ourselves isn’t the best idea in the world.

David Hernandez collected 14 strikeouts Friday night. Chris Ray has 15 on the season.

You know what what, maybe I’m piling on Chris Ray unfairly. Brad Bergesen has made 7 starts this season and only has 18 strikeouts. But I paid money to go to a baseball game Sunday, and I liked what I saw from Brad Bergesen. I didn’t like what I saw from Chris Ray.

You know how good the basketball playoffs are right now? The hockey playoffs are equally as bad. Like-you couldn’t pay me enough bad. I know everyone likes to tell me about how great the NHL regular season is, but the postseason has been about as exciting as this week’s PGA golf Tournament (which Rory Sabbatini apparently won-but I knew better than to think you cared).

So…..the lacrosse Final Four happened. Of course, since it happened in Boston and no teams from Maryland were involved, I didn’t care. Apparently no one else did, as attendance was down some 10,000 fans. Organizers said the drop in attendance was likely based on the decision to ban alcohol from the infield the economy. Spare me the thing about the Orioles shouldn’t have signed him because he strikes out a lot. He wins games…..like the one I was watching today. The following hitters are all amongst the top 25 strikeout kings in baseball…..

4. Meredith Frank, Katrina Dowd and the Northwestern Wildcats

I hate saying this: but women’s lacrosse is just awful. I mean, really painful to watch. Thankfully for me; Northwestern and Penn found a way to make this particular game slightly less unbearable to watch. The Quakers scored 4 goals in the final minute of regulation; and then scored a goal with 11 seconds left in overtime. But since women’s lacrosse DOESN’T have a golden goal rule for some reason; the game went on, and Dowd poked home a goal with less than a second left. Frank scored the golden goal in a later overtime, then Northwestern topped North Carolina for the championship Sunday. The entire weekend at Unitas Stadium included maybe 3 hits. And they came when I was punching Maryland media relations star Sam Angell for letting me watch a women’s lacrosse game. But he did bring Berger Cookies to RFK Stadium for out “Battle of the Beltways” tailgate. And he doesn’t root for two teams. Because he’s not a comunist.

This is a depressing weekend for me. This will be the first time since August I will not be including my “weekend picks”, as no local college teams are playing football, basketball, or lacrosse.

I could pick the Orioles’ games; but that’s just depressing.

However, I do have a question. Is anyone going down to Nationals Park this weekend that might not have gone to a game had the series been at OPACY? I fall into that category myself, as I will be headed down Sunday, and admittedly wouldn’t go this weekend if the Birds were at home. But the chance to go down at yell at some Redskins fans DOES appeal to me.

-Congratulations to Ralph Friedgen, who I hadn’t seen until his appearance on First Take yesterday on ESPN2. He looked really good; and I think it’s very cool that he had dedicated himself to his health this offseason.

First, Comcast SportsNet sent out a pair of press releases today. Their first press release stated that they had an exclusive interview Thursday night with Greivis Vasquez regarding his future plans with the University of Maryland. An hour later, they said the interview was no longer on; but they would instead have further information regarding Greivis’ status tonight on their “SportsNite” show.

My best guess is that Greivis told Chick Hernandez he was going to attend some Pre-Draft Camps before making a final decision on whether or not he would return to school. As the school has never released anything OFFICIAL regarding Greivis’ future, this may have been viewed as news. However, seeing as how Greivis had already made those plans clear while the Terps were in Kansas City; someone at CSN might have quickly let someone in their PR department know that the interview didn’t technically contain any real “news.”

This is pure speculation on my part, and they might well let us know tonight that Greivis has decided to hire an agent and will be leaving school. But I don’t count on that. Also, it is almost completely inconceivable that Greivis has decided already to return to school, as he would lost the opportunity to participate in Draft camps. Greivis doesn’t have to make a final decision until June; and I doubt he will until then.

(UPDATE: Chick Hernandez says the announcement was that Vasquez will file his paperwork tomorrow morning, and will participate in the NBA Draft process. He will NOT hire an agent, and says he does not want to play professionally in Europe. In other news, the world is reportedly flat.)

Second, the schedule for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge has been released, and Maryland will visit Indiana as part of the event. No time/TV announcements yet; but here are the dates and games:

Maryland has traditionally done very well in the event at home, but has struggled on the road.

Third, if you are on the WNST Text Service, you received a text saying Braxton Dupree (Calvert Hall) had been granted his release from the school. Nothing surprising here, as this move has been speculated since Braxton was benched early in the season. He will likely move to a mid-major school in hopes to build confidence against lower competition. He has the size that should lend to him being good, but it just has not clicked against ACC opposition.

All of this news in the same week that Gary has reportedly worked back into the Lance Stephenson picture, the Terps have gotten involved with former Florida big man commit DeShawn Painter, and St. Frances star Terrell Vinson chose UMass instead of the Terps.
